And as was the case with the first run, the actors see no lines, the kill-rate is surprisingly high and comedians are frequently forced to be spontaneously funny while on horseback. The Hulu original series, "Quick Draw," is a half-hour procedural comedy set in the Old West. It has, however, something of a modern sensibility to it. In this exclusive clip from Monday's upcoming episode, we see that sensibility in a video for a "whiskey support group for not drinking whiskey."
Part of episode 5 -- available on Hulu starting on Monday (Aug. 26) -- the clip shows what happens when the good citizens of Great Bend, Kansas gather together for what they thought was a group for drinking whiskey. To (incorrectly) paraphrase LL Cool J, don’t call it a network. The idea of TV is definitely shifting, especially given Netflix’s 14 Emmy nominations this year, and Hulu is helping push that concept even further, to the point that it doesn’t relate to the traditional network model.
“We’re not really a network, we’re not really a studio,” Hulu acting CEO Andy Forssell told reporters during the Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday. “We’re a distributor at heart.” Forssell says Hulu goes out “looking for voices,” as opposed to networks that try to find shows that fit their point of view.

One of the first things Seth Meyers and Michael Shoemaker realized they had in common when they met at Saturday Night Live in 2001 was a love of comic books. Syfy released a lot of news yesterday and probably the biggest revelation is that it ordered a fourth season of Being Human.
The channel also ordered a bunch of series and pilots. That included a pilot of High Moon from "television icon" (I'm going to use that title in the future, I sound too much like a fanboy when I call him a "god of teleplays") Bryan Fuller, and developing seven other dramas set in space. Every so often I'll see a complaint about how Syfy doesn't have any shows set in space (a big part of science fiction, admittedly), clearly they're trying to address that.
Syfy also ordered a few series including a horror anthology series from Jamie Foxx to air as part of Syfy's Halloween programming.

Just as Mitch Hurwitz, Jim Vallely, and Dean Lorey begin writing the new 10-episode season of the once-cancelled-and-recently-internet-greenlit Fox television show Arrested Development (scheduled to air on Netflix sometime in 2013), Crackle greenlights another entrant into the Long-Form-Content-of-Television-Quality-but-Distributed-Online fray. Sons of Anarchy producer Chris Collins and the Co-Head of Fox Writers Studio Steve Tzirlin are on board to executive produce. The Unkown will be in the vein of The X-Files, Creepshow, and/or Twilight Zone and is scheduled scheduled to go into production in March for a 2012 release. Royal Wedding Mania is back on TV tonight so I guess the last couple of days all the networks had to pack up, fly to London and establish their wedding headquarters before sending all the PAs out to find the wackiest wedding memorabilia to be had so they can hold it up on TV and feign surprise that Anyone would want to purchase a commemorative tea cozy or whatever. What are we up to in terms of tacky wedding memorabilia? There's always that threshold that hovers somewhere just past creepy (William and Kate pillows) and heads straight on into offensive (say, a commemorative plate featuring an angelic picture of Diana smiling down on William and Kate) and it's always interesting to see when that event horizon is breached. In a "sad for humanity" kind of way, anyway. Here's your Wednesday night TV:

Crackle Web series "Jailbait" takes a grab the ankles humorous look at life behind bars. This new improvised original comedy web series premiered on April 1, 2011 and will include 10 episodes of about 3-6 minutes long each. John Lehr (TBS' 10 Items or Less) stars as Oswald "Ozzie" O'Connor, as his character inadvertently is busted in a sting operation and is now facing the big house. The humor is not family-friendly stuff, intended for mature audiences as Ozzie is banging behind bars with hardened gang members and murderers. Hilarity ensues as one would imagine. All the imagined joys of prison life are spoofed, with cavity search segments and the like.

This April Fool's Sony's Crackle is debuting Jailbait, an improvised comedy web series starring John Lehr (Cavemen, Ten Items or Less). In this fish-out-of-water story, Lehr plays Ozzie, a naive perpetual optimist who is serving nine months in prison after accidentally buying drugs in a sting operation. Jailbait also stars Bob Clendenin (Cougar Town), Tim Bagley ($#*! My Day Says), Kirk Ward, Evie Peck, Sandra Vergara and Michael Bailey Smith, and was created, written, and executive produced by John Lehr and Nancy Hower (the team behind TBS’ Ten Items or Less) and co-executive produced by Keith Raskin. "Jailbait is another unrestrained, hysterical comedy from Crackle that goes to places most television networks won’t,” said Eric Berger, Senior Vice President, Digital Networks for Sony Pictures Television. “John and Nancy’s no holds barred approach to comedy is sure to resonate with our viewers.” From Crackle's press release: The show chronicles Ozzie...

The Black List started in 2005 when Franklin Leonard was working for Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company. Leonard was getting drowned in sub-par spec scripts, so he sent an e-mail out to his industry contacts looking for the best unproduced scripts out there. The 2005 Black List and the 2006 Black List were undeniably important in getting a fresh batch of writers on the Hollywood scene. Since then, too many people know about the party and the studio system has learned that people are paying attention. That means that increasingly, scripts have been lobbied into the Black List. [Note: I have no actual evidence I would be able to share, disclose or show you that proves this, so file that assertion under: "Things Dave thinks and gets to write because he's squatted on that soapbox long enough to get squatter's rights."]This year: the majority of the Black List Top Ten has already been sold or optioned. I'm not sure how helpful it is to make a list of good In Production scripts. Certainly less helpful to writer's churning out material that keeps getting passed over (or people who have Not starred in Prison Break...

Lisa Soltau was living in Seattle when her friend Bonnie Gillespie sent her a book she had written called "Casting Qs," a compilation of interviews with casting directors. "I read it and I absolutely loved all the aspects of the job," says Soltau. "I loved the entertainment industry and movies and television. The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. "I picked L.A. because I had lived there once for about three years and I thought it would be easier to acclimate there," Soltau says. "Plus I wanted to work on 'Six Feet Under,' which was airing at the time.

In an unprepossessing brick block, in an equally nondescript industrial estate on the West of London lies the factory and headquarters of Brompton Bicycles. It's tucked behind a Mercedes-Benz van depot, and I only know I'm in the right place because there are about five pretzel-shaped hunks of metal parked outside the door. Oh, and a bunch of twentysomething testers in slogan tees, bouncing around doing bunny hops and the like on recently finished Bromptons. It's like E.T., but without the alien.
A rangy guy in desert shorts and steel toe-capped work boots approaches. "Nice bike," he says over his shoulder as he walks through the front door. Later on, I learn that he says this to everyone--even the engineers working on the line. I wonder if the joke has worn a little thin. He is Will Butler-Adams, the CEO of Brompton, and the guy who has taken...

Law-abiding Citizen arrives on Blu-ray tomorrow, April 12, in a special Director's Cut with extended, more graphic scenes of action and brutality.
Momentum Pictures will also release the original theatrical cut on DVD on the same day.
From director F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job, A Man Apart, Be Cool) and writer Kurt Wimmer (The Recruit, Street Kings, Equilibrium), this certificate-18 action thriller stars Gerard Butler (300, RocknRolla, Gamer) and Jamie Foxx (Collateral, The Kingdom, Miami Vice).
Clyde Shelton (Butler) is a family man whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered. When the killers are caught, Nick Rice (Foxx) - a hotshot young Philadelphia prosecutor - is assigned to the case. Against his will, Rice is forced to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice.
Ten years later, the man who got away with murder is found dead and Shelton coolly admits his guilt.

Chicago – 2009 was a very bad year for Gerard Butler. He has the potential to be one of the most appealing actors in Hollywood, but like Hugh Jackman, he’s usually cast in roles that sap him of all his inherent charisma, such as the obnoxious misogynist in “The Ugly Truth” or the tormented prisoner in “Gamer.” Yet while both of those films were tortuously awful, “Law Abiding Citizen” at least has the germ of a good idea.
It starts like any standard vigilante drama, with a photogenic everyman falling victim to a home invasion that kills off his family. The devastated man, Clyde Shelton (Butler), becomes enraged when prosecutor Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) fails to bring both of the killers to justice. A plea bargain sends one to death row, and the other back onto the streets. Ten years later, Clyde decides to take the law into his own hands.

I normally hate the idea of blogs posting about movie posters. Few adequately critique or celebrate the design work, which is the primary reason to spotlight such marketing materials. And generally they're just written about, sometimes "exclusively," to assist in the promotion of the movie, which can appear a tad shameful.
But I am a veteran movie poster enthusiast, partly due to the fact my father worked on the occasional one-sheet back in the day, and anytime he'd take us to the movies we'd start off by touring the theater's "coming soon" displays. The main game was to be be the first to find Drew Struzan's name at the bottom of a poster (he seemed to have a new one every week in the '80s). So, I can't help but be interested in the way poster design has progressed -- or regressed, as it were -- since I was a kid.

Gerard Butler stars in a grisly revenge drama. By Peter Bradshaw
Gerard Butler's big old grumpy face has loomed large on the sides of buses this week, advertising Law Abiding Citizen, his violent new thriller about revenge. He really is as cross as two sticks. As my mother would say: Mr Butler has the look of a man who has found a penny and lost sixpence – and on rising from the pavement with that dull and disappointing copper coin in his hand, noticed his wife and child being brutally slain by scumbag criminals who will, in all probability, be cosseted by a politically correct legal system that cares more about statistics than justice. This is a different face from the one he uses for romcoms such as Ps I Love You: the dishy and warmly gruntled expression of a dreamboat hunk. In this film, in which he spends much of his time banged up,...

Law Abiding Citizen blasts into UK cinemas this Friday and to celebrate, we’ve been sent an audio interview with leading man Gerard Butler, otherwise known as that guy who blows shit up.
Talking to film correspondent James Kleinmann, Butler talked about his passion for the film and his reasons behind taking on the explosive project. Check the full interview out below:
Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is an honest, upstanding family man. Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) is an ambitious young prosecutor working for a safer Philadelphia.
When Clyde’s wife and young daughter are brutally murdered, Nick is assigned to the case. On the verge of sentencing, Nick sensationally cuts a deal with one of the killers, sparing him from death row.
Ten years later, the man who got away with murder is found dead. Clyde Shelton coolly admits his guilt before issuing a warning to Nick; either fix the...

The American justice system is broken. Innocent people, jailed twenty to thirty years ago, are now being freed based on forensic evidence re-assessed using modern techniques. People are being imprisoned for petty indiscretions like queue jumping and littering whilst violent criminals are allowed to go free due to technicalities, or a lack of ‘the right kind of evidence’. There are more and more cases of violence among youths, with the authorities powerless to doing anything about it. The judges are inept, the lawyers corrupt. The legal system is in dire need of a complete overhaul.
An extreme view, to be sure, but one that many law abiding citizens share across the country. One also that is explored in Gary F Gray’s latest movie. Gray has explored similar themes before. My high school reunion wound up being not at all traumatic, so I'm not certainly not going to let the week's movies get me down.
This week marks the long-awaited premiere of Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, adapted (by Jonze and novelist Dave Eggers) from the beloved children's book by gay author and illustrator Maurice Sendak. I can imagine audiences being widely divided over this movie — after all, even the book has had its detractors over the years — and I can say that I definitely liked it without ever really loving it.
Max Records stars as Max, the wolf-suited boy who misbehaves and runs off to an island inhabited by monsters who make him their king. The movie offers delightful visuals, a sweetly plaintive score by Karen O (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Carter Burwell, and terrific performances by Records and Catherine Keener, along with the voices of James Gandolfini,...

Law Abiding Citizen is a well-directed, entertaining movie that suffers from one unfortunate affliction: It makes absolutely no sense. There’s a certain amount of suspension of disbelief required by any sort of big budget urban thriller with lots of explosions, stern bureaucrats, macho posturing and self-righteous vengeance. Anybody who’s seen the Death Wish series or any other B (or lower) grade revenge pictures knows what I’m talking about. But this film, from director F. Gary Gray and screenwriter Kurt Wimmer, asks for far, far too much of it. It stars Jamie Foxx as Nick Rice, a self-serious Philadelphia district attorney who consents to a plea bargain with the murderers of Clyde Shelton’s (Gerard Butler) wife and daughter because of insufficient evidence for a criminal trial. Big freaking mistake. Ten years later, the murderers suffer heinous graphic deaths, the last of which involves a gruesome dismemberment carried out on one of the multiple industrial...

In the networks' fervor to find new reality shows to put on the air, concepts are frequently "borrowed" from the UK airwaves. Imports like American Idol and Dancing With The Stars have become very popular here in the states and NBC execs are hoping that they'll get lucky.

Chicago – The largely improvised “10 Items or Less” returns for a third trip to the grocery store on Tuesday, January 6th, 2009 on TBS with what looks like another hit-and-miss season of occasionally inspired humor surrounded by generally boring characters in an overall mediocre show.
More “Sorta Funny” than the one-time TBS slogan of “Very Funny,” “10 Items or Less” is a reasonable diversion, a series that has more chuckles than some of the lackluster comedies on television this season but never delivers on the potential displayed by its talented star, John Lehr. Like an improvisational troupe with only one real star, every time that Lehr leaves the screen, the show falls apart.
Even without his favorite turkey, Leslie still continues bowling

John Lehr would like to thank you and make sure you come again. The creator and star of “10 Items or Less,” the TBS sitcom about a local grocery store, is beginning the second season of the show. The comedy is almost all improv with no character dialogue written beforehand. Lehr has a history of TV -- and film and stage, for that matter -- and spent time in Chicago, attending Northwestern and performing improv. His wife, author Jennifer Lehr of “Ill-equipped for a Life of Sex: A Memoir,” is pregnant with their second child, and though he loves parenthood, Lehr vows his resolution this year “is to not have any more children. I’m getting it cut. Whatever it takes, I’m done.”...
