I don’t know if you remember, but I was not the biggest advocate for the reboot of RoboCop. I did, however, promise that I would give it a shot, and I have to say that I am happy I did. I walked in determined to hate the movie and walked out pleasantly surprised.
Director José Padilha took on the daunting task of rebooting a cult classic, and I feel that he hit the mark. A lot of people seated around me were RoboCop superfans, and you could tell that they were expecting a word for word remake with updated graphics. If that is what you are looking for, that is not what you are going to get. For you superfans out there, Padilha did not make a movie that totally ignores the original. There is plenty that I would like to say about this, but I will let you...

RoboCop (2014) is a straight-up reboot and retelling of the original RoboCop (1987). Once again, a Detroit-based cop is murdered and used for an experiment in modern policing by the shadowy corporation OmniCorp, to promote their own interests rather than to truly protect the public it supposedly serves. The hero is Alex Murphy/RoboCop (Joel Kinnaman). He is a good cop and family man. Murphy patrols the streets of Detroit with his partner, Jack Lewis (Michael K. Smith), in the year 2028. When Jack is wounded early in the film, Murphy starts to investigate since he is not the sort to let that kind of thing go unpunished. The responsible parties know this and set out to get Murphy before he can do the same.
This leaves us with a critically wounded police officer and a wife with many awful decisions to make. Clara Murphy (Abbie Cornish) is faced with a horrifically damaged...

No black humor. No satire. No point. But hey, check out the 1987 catchphrases dropped in at random! I’m “biast” (pro): love the original…
I’m “biast” (con): …but saw little point in remaking it
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I was not feeling optimistic about any reboot or remake of Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop, which is still brutally relevant 27 years on. Could anyone find a good reason to update this flick when the original still has the power to shock us today? And then this new RoboCop opens in “sunny Tehran,” where “random patrols” by Ed-209s, unmanned walking tactical tanks, and Em-208s, android soldiers, keep the peace as part of the U.S.’s “Operation Freedom Tehran,” which makes the good people of the city feel safe and secure, we’re informed by a blowhard conservative TV host gleefully sharing this...

Michael K. Williams plays Officer Jack Lewis in the movie, but Oldman's role is that of the doctor who "resurrects" Alex Murphy as Robocop, so what he is doing in the police vest I have no idea. I guess either he's just posing with it for the pic, or it has something to do with the plot - finds himself in a situation that requires some police protection perhaps? The Killing's Joel Kinnaman is locked and loaded to play the lead role in José Padilha‘s Robocop reboot. Now there's some pretty big names rumored to be circling the project as well, and they're pretty surprising. The actors mentioned include Edward Norton, Gael García Bernal, Rebecca Hall and even Sean Penn is in the mix.
It's hard to imagine Penn and Norton being in this movie, but it's Hollywood and anything's possible. Here are the details from The Tracking Board report on who they would be playing in the film,
Edward Norton is circling to, fittingly enough, play the role of Norton, the brilliant mastermind behind bringing Robocop to life...Also circling are Gael Garcia Bernal and Rebecca Hall in strong supporting roles. Bernal would look to be cast as Jack Lewis, Alex’s dashingly handsome police partner who eventually begins a relationship with Hall’s character, Clara,...

The "RoboCop" reboot has already found its lead cyborg (Joel Kinnaman from TV's "The Killing"), so it's with some regret that we hear Edward Norton might be joining -- not as the half-man, half-machine hero -- but as the man behind the futuristic crime fighter. The Tracking Board posted the rumor that the Oscar-nominated actor would "fittingly enough, play the role of Norton, the brilliant mastermind behind bringing RoboCop to life." Gael Garcia Bernal is reportedly in talks to play Jack Lewis, the "dashingly handsome police partner" to Alex Murphy (the future RoboCop), while Rebecca Hall ("The Town") might play Clara, Murphy's widow who begins a relationship with his ex-partner. (In the original film, Murphy's partner was played by Nancy Allen.) Sean Penn, an actor who's well-known for his liberal activism, is supposedly being courted to play "a right-wing news reporter who sticks to his guns when it comes to his political views.

With the recent casting of Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as Alex Murphy/RoboCop in the forthcoming RoboCop, there has been plenty of speculation about who would round out the rest of the cast for director Jose Padilha’s remake.
It seems the plan may be to surround Kinnaman with major Hollywood talent, a proven strategy for over 30 years now when it comes to box office appeal. According to Tracking-Board, Edward Norton, Gael Garcia Bernal (Babel), Rebecca Hall (The Town) and Sean Penn are in talks to join the cast.
If cast, Norton will play a character also named “Norton”, a brilliant mastermind behind bringing RoboCop to life.
Bernal would likely play Jack Lewis, Alex Murphy’s handsome police partner who eventually begins a relationship with Murphy’s former wife, to be played by Hall.
Meanwhile, Sean Penn may end up in the role of Novack, a right-wing news reporter.

Easily the biggest bit of rumored news today finds a slew of actors circling the upcoming Robocop remake. Joel Kinnaman has already been locked down to play the title role and now MGM is looking to fill out the rest of the cast. According to The Tracking Board, Edward Norton is circling to play the brilliant mastermind who brings Robocop to life, Norton. I’ll just go ahead and put this under the “wishful thinking” pile right now, but The Tracking Board reports that Rebecca Hall, Sean Penn, Edward Norton, and Gael García Bernal are either circling or being pursued for José Padilha‘s RoboCop. If you never thought Academy Award nominees would be starring in a Paul Verhoeven remake — well, time to pony up on that bet.
Should everything come together as planned (again, “wishful thinking”), Hall would be seen as Clara, wife of Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) before his human death and robotic resurrection; Penn, who’s merely of interest right now, is wanted to play “Novack, a right-wing news reporter who sticks to his guns when it comes to his political views”; Norton is looking at the part of… Norton, creator of RoboCop; and Bernal could end up playing Jack Lewis, the “dashingly handsome” police partner to Murphy who, upon his death,...

Philadelphia — A federal appeals court on Wednesday upheld its finding that the Federal Communications Commissions acted improperly in fining CBS over the fleeting exposure of Janet Jackson's breast during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.
A three-judge panel from 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia ruled that the FCC improperly assessed a $550,000 fine against the network for the so-called "wardrobe malfunction" that lasted just over half a second.
During the Super Bowl performance in Houston, Justin Timberlake ripped off Jackson's bustier, briefly exposing her breast and a silver sunburst "shield" covering her nipple. In arguments last year, the FCC argued that CBS should have been aware the performers might add shock value to the act.
"CBS had a duty to investigate," FCC lawyer Jack Lewis argued.
The network countered that regulators were now trying to apply different standards to words and images despite previously excusing fleeting instances of both.

Sky1 has commissioned a new documentary series called Naked Britain. The three-part show, fronted by psychologists Jack Lewis and Anjula Mutanda, will dissect the UK's attitudes to nudity and find out if the country deserves its prudish reputation.
