The Costume Designers Guild has announced nominations for the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, with “Maestro,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things” and “Oppenheimer” among those landing nominations.

The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

For those hoping to become costume designers, some of the industry’s top craftspeople have some advice to pass along.
“There isn’t one singular path to finding your way through this industry, I think if you probably asked every one of us we would come to it from a different background – my degree is in architecture,” costume designer Leah Katznelson, an Emmy nominee this year for “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” tells Gold Derby during an exclusive video interview for our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel. “I would probably say bring what your interests are, don’t shy away from it, because it might not be what you studied. If you have an interest in art, literature, history, language, anthropology, sociology, or any of those fields, you can draw on those resources all the time when developing character, so bring everything in and jump in, and it’s not too late to start.

Costume designer Sharon Long won an Emmy Award last year for her work on the Hulu series “The Great.” But it was easy for her to not rest on any laurels heading into the show’s third season due to the story itself.
“We had the advantage in the change was Catherine [Elle Fanning] wasn’t pregnant. So there was already a sort of built-in change there. Which I think is really helpful,” Long, an Emmy nominee this year as well, tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel. Long and her team gets scripts in a block, two at a time, and the workflow allows her to take the costumes in the moment of the story. For Emmy nominee Sharon Long, each costume is approached like it’s going to be photographed for a poster. “You have to put in as much effort as if it’s going to be seen 12 times,” says Long. In the case of this dress designed for Elizabeth (Belinda Bromilow), the aunt of Nicholas Hoult’s Peter III, she wanted to display the character’s worldliness and the era’s East Asia-inspired design. “There was always a hope that Aunt Elizabeth would wear it again, but there was never actually an opportunity. It was too much of a statement to work in any other place.”
1. Long likes to sit with her textiles before sketching. “I drape them, I look at them, I think about them, and then I do the drawings,” she muses. It was while studying the material used for the jacket that she discovered “gold pagodas and little red flecks” in the fabric.

From Lily James in shimmering Atelier Versace to Zendaya in Maison Valentino and Elle Fanning in a strapless black and pink silk gown meant to evoke thoughts of golden-age Hollywood (by her The Great costume designer Sharon Long), leading ladies indeed were in the mood to channel glamour on Monday evening.
Many of Hollywood’s most stylish men likewise opted for elevated suiting that prove the male-peacock trend shows no signs of slowing. White suits were an early trend on the Emmys red carpet, including Andrew Garfield in Zegna and Succession‘s Nicholas Braun in a double-breasted design by Dior Men.

Nicholas Hoult had some interesting insight to share about the evolution of Emperor Peter III, his character on Hulu’s “The Great.” Hoult shared his thoughts with Variety senior culture and events editor Marc Malkin during Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv.
“He’s now a doting father, which is the transition for most sex slaves, I think,” Hoult said during the red carpet interview. “It’s an examination of Catherine and his relationship, and Elle [Fanning] is such a wonderful actress, we have a lot of fun.”
Hoult referred to the long-spanning relationship between the show’s two main characters, which has evolved drastically over the course of the show’s two-season run. Both Hoult and Fanning are nominated for their performances at Monday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, for lead actor and actress in a comedy series, respectively.
At the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which took place on Sept.

Elle Fanning is taking a note from old Hollywood for the 2022 Emmys. The actress shared the inspiration behind her retro look with Live From E!'s Laverne Cox Sept. 12, revealing that she called on The Great costume designer Sharon Long and seamstress Catherine Shaw to craft her red carpet ensemble. (See all the red carpet looks here and find out all the Emmys winners here.) "I've always been inspired by the glamour of the '50s, specifically when costume designers would design actresses gowns," Elle shared while speaking to Laverne at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Calif. Emmy voting has closed, but for those who just can’t get enough, many costumes from Emmy-nominated shows have taken over the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Fidm) Museum in downtown Los Angeles.
The exhibition showcases costumes from over 22 programs, 13 of which are Emmy-nominated in the three different award genres: period, contemporary, and fantasy/sci-fi. The series will run through Nov. 5.
Costumes on display include the iconic red swimsuit from Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy,” the regal gowns from “Bridgerton” and outfits worn by Jean Smart in “Hacks.”
Nick Verreos, Fidm chair of fashion design, highlighted some of his favorite outfits. Verreos tells Variety, “Of course, all of the costumes are highlights, but the Emmy nominees are the real stars of the show.”
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” costumes by Donna Zakowska.
“These costumes from ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ‘ are from Season Four, when the series transitions into the 1960s.

When we think about period drama, the image we hold in our minds is always wrapped up in a show’s setting. The setting is an interesting moment in historical or imagined time, separate from our own, but the setting is also the stuff in it; it’s how different everyone looks. Sometimes that stuff means swords and armor and dragons, and the martial, fantastical nature of a “Game of Thrones” is what makes it visually distinct.
But even when chainmail isn’t involved, it’s the look of the costumes that bring us closer to characters in the past or make them seem all the more imposing and distant. It’s the one place where maximalism and lavishness are always acceptable – “Bridgerton” isn’t a show with costumes; the costumes are in many respects the show.

For the six Emmy contenders on our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel, there is no one set starting point in their creative processes. “It definitely depends on the project,” “Euphoria” costume designer Heidi Bivens says during our group discussion with Sharon Long (“The Great”), Donna Zakowska (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Zaldy (“RuPaul’s Drag Race“), Christine Bieselin Clark (“Star Trek: Picard”) and Laura Montgomery (“What We Do in the Shadows”). “If it’s contemporary, I like to do a lot of people-watching and definitely get ideas from real-life characters. It’s just so specific to the project.”
When she joined “Euphoria,” Bivens did a lot of people-watching outside high schools, waiting for when school would get out to see what kids were wearing. She also turned to where kids really live these days: social media. “I can do a deep dive and go down that wormhole of social media, so...

Designing maternity wear for a fake pregnancy is one thing, but it’s a whole different story when said fake pregnancy takes place in 18th-century Russia. That was the challenge costume designer Sharon Long was presented with for Season 2 of “The Great,” in which Catherine (Elle Fanning) is pregnant for eight of the 10 episodes.
“What we did was we we started off with the pregnancy corsets, so we decided to do her realistically,” Long tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “So women at the time would have carried on wearing a corset, and there’s sort of a lace-sided corset so that you can extend them as as as the woman gets more and more pregnant. But the because Elle’s pregnancy wasn’t real, it meant that she was wearing a kind of prosthetic bump. And the only...

If it wasn’t enough for The Great to be Emmy-nominated for its costumes, costume designer Sharon Long earned praise from her stars too. Corsets were an essential undergarment for Victorian women, which lifted and supported the bosom, created a flat front and provided women a form-fitted figure. But they were notoriously restrictive. As essential as corsets are to the 18th century, they are equally as important to period costume design in the 21st century.
However, as period-era dramas filled the air, costume designers of many Emmy-contending shows followed up to dress their cast members in corsets — but with the modern twist of added comfort.
Carrie Coon, who plays wealthy socialite Bertha Russell in HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” is no stranger to wearing corsets. Her theatrical background meant she wore them on stage under heavy, upholstered fabrics that had to withstand all kinds of weather. During a costume fitting for the show’s second season, Coon tells Variety: “Every job is different. No matter what the period and so they’re built differently.

“Cruella” (Disney),” “Dune” (Warner Bros.), and “Coming 2 America” (Amazon Prime) were the big film winners Wednesday night at the 24th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. “Cruella” designer and two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beavan won for period; Denis Villeneuve’s epic “Dune” took sci-fi honors for costume designers Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan; and Oscar winner Ruth Carter (“Black Panther”) earned the contemporary prize for “Coming 2 America.”
Held at the The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, the annual awards celebrated the best in film, TV, and short-form costume design in eight categories that spanned fantasy, contemporary, and period works. Show hosts were actors Andrew Rannells (“The Prom”) and Casey Wilson (“The Shrink Next Door”).

“Dune”, “Coming 2 America” and “Cruella” were the film winners at the 2022 Costume Designers Guild Awards on Wednesday night.
Back in person after the pandemic, the awards recognized excellence in film, TV and short-form costume design and were hosted by Andrew Rannells and Casey Wilson.
Costume Designers Guild president Salvador Perez discussed the role the awards and the guild played in the pandemic, saying, “As a community, we have survived a life-changing pandemic industry and been on the brink of work stoppage.”
Perez also called for “pay equity now.” This has been an ongoing plea from Perez and the costume designers who fight for pay equity. He said, costume designers, are “historically underpaid for too long. It’s about costume designers in the costume department being valued as a major asset to the industry and compensated accordingly.”

Just one month after debuting its sophomore season to rave reviews, Hulu’s “The Great” has shared with Gold Derby the names of the 12 cast members who are eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Last year’s SAG nominated star Nicholas Hoult returns for the second season as Russian Emperor Peter, who begins this second installment in the midst of a coup attempt by his wife, Empress Catherine (Elle Fanning). See the alphabetical list below.
“The Great” is looking for its second consecutive nomination for comedy ensemble at the SAG Awards after earning a bid at the last ceremony for its freshman season. Star Hoult is also looking to score back-to-back bids in the Comedy Actor category. Gold Derby expects the series will not only match its previous nominations haul, but add a third citation for Fanning. According to our current combined odds, “The Great” is in fourth in ensemble,...

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Hulu, for this edition we look at how composer Nathan Barr, costume designer Sharon Long, and production designer Francesca Di Mottola created a foundation to hold up the singular tone of “The Great.”
The second season of “The Great” starts at a crossroads. The Hulu series, loosely based on the real life of Russian Empress Catherine the Great, ended its first season with a pregnant Catherine (Elle Fanning) staging a coup against her husband Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). In real life, Peter was dead less than a month later. But “The Great” bills itself as only “occasionally true,” and so Hoult’s cheerful psychopath sticks around, a perfect embodiment of the show’s twin axes of humor and darkness, which can shift...

A year and a half after its huzzah-filled first season, Hulu’s history-spoofing, Russian royalty satire “The Great” has returned for its sophomore run. Elle Fanning stars at the title’s Catherine the Great, who at the end of the first season has initiated a coup against her misogynistic and vulgar husband Peter, played by Nicholas Hoult. Her success is complicated by her pregnancy with their child, though, and the second season finds them navigating their new power imbalance. All 10 episodes of the second season of “The Great” began streaming on Nov. 19.
After earning a pair of Emmy nominations for its first season, including one for series creator and writer Tony McNamara, “The Great” returns to, well, great reviews from critics. It currently has a Metacritic score of 84, which indicates “universal acclaim.” On Rotten Tomatoes, “The Great” season 2 reviews are raves and it merits a 100% fresh score.

Our reaction to the fashion and makeup on season two of The Great? Huzzah! The sophomore season of the Hulu series is even more lavish and over-the-top as Elle Fanning's pregnant Catherine takes over Russia and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) gets ready to step into the role of stay-at-home dad to their unborn son, Paul. To reflect the characters' changing dynamics, costume designer Sharon Long and hair-and-makeup artist Louise Coles made some changes to almost all the characters' appearances. For Catherine, Long decided to do away with the docile and dainty look of season one, replacing it with "powerful, stronger" patterns and adding a "little bit...

When Sharon Long was brought in to work on the hit Hulu show “The Great” for Season 2, she was immediately faced with a huge challenge: crafting 18th-century Russian costumes for the main character, who was pregnant throughout the series.
“It was almost just over nine months and she was pregnant the whole time,” Long tells Gold Derby during our “Meet the Experts” costume designers panel. “We shot it in blocks so she didn’t go backward and forward in different sizes. But it was quite complex. The 18th-century woman’s shape is a tiny waist and a big skirt. What we had was a diminishing waist. Catherine’s waistline was disappearing and moving up higher.”
