Lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya, who has shaped the contours of film music with his pen in addition to legends like Gulzar, Javed Akhtar and Sahir Ludhianvi, has shared an interesting anecdote about his journey into becoming a lyricist.
Bhattacharya came to Mumbai in the late 1990s to become a singer. However, destiny had other plans for him. While he didn’t find much success as a singer, he changed the tides of film music with his lyrics. But he was initially quite reluctant to step into writing the lyrics of the songs.
The lyricist recently appeared on The Music Podcast and shared that it was music composer Amit Trivedi, who persuaded him to give his real name for the credit of lyricist in the cult-classic album ‘Dev.D’.
Amitabh Bhattacharya said on ‘The Music Podcast’, “It was Amit Trivedi, who acted as the catalyst to my journey as a lyricist. I had written scratch songs for ‘Dev.

New Delhi, Aug 30 (Ians) Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi, is the time of joyous celebrations where sisters cherish their bond by tying rakhi around the wrist of their brothers, a symbol of mutual trust, friendship and love.

Romantics are gushing through the ears and the trigger is Dharmendra crooning – अभी न जाओ छोड़कर – to Shabana Azmi which culminates in an impromptu kiss in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’. The original song from Dev Anand’s Hum Dono still is a swan song for the lovers especially when the lady in question is planning to leave, while the boy has the innate desire that she stays, and this yearn is not relegated to teenagers. It continues to reverberate through the ages ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ has amplified it.

Yesterday in the morning was watching the song from Pyaasa – Ye mehlon ye takhto ye taajon ki duniya, suddenly the news flashed on the screen, ace Design Director, Nitin Desai has committed suicide. Suicide? Nitin Desai the man who brought opulence into the world of Hindi cinema with a sense of reality was no more? I checked the Instagram post, and found Rasul Pookutty in a state of distraught announcing the demise of Nitin Chandrakant Desai.
By the evening the news had spelt like wild fire in the industry, but was there some kind of a mourning for the departed soul? The soul that gave legendary films like 1942-A Love Story, Lagaan, Jodha Akbar and Kbc the realism of location at his studio in Karjat which he had specifically designed to aid the filmmakers shoot films within the vicinity of Mumbai with as diverse and myriad sets that they could imagine.

In Urdu poetry, this ‘shair’ can be credited for not only using more simple — and natural — language to broaden his art’s appeal but also went on to initiate its enduring tryst with Hindi films.
‘Arzoo Lakhnavi’ was, if not the first, among the leading mainstream poets to begin writing lyrics for the fledgling film industry — beginning with Calcutta’s New Theatres in the 1930s before shifting to Bombay in 1942 — recognising how this association would preserve — and extend — the reach of Urdu poetry beyond its organic followership.
Much before Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi, or Shakeel Badayuni became known, he was crafting lyrics for Indian cinema’s first superstars — K.L. Saigal and Kanan Devi as well as for emerging stars like Madhubala, and more.
An outstanding standard-bearer of ‘Dabistan-e-Lakhnau’ or the Lucknow School of Urdu poetry, Syed Anwar Hussain ‘Arzoo Lakhnavi’ seemed destined to be a poet.

Introduction: The year was 2013. I got an invite to attend a programme in the Sahir Ludhianvi auditorium in Govt. College Ludhiana. It was a pleasant surprise. I found the auditorium full of fans of Sahir Ludhianvi who created such a visible memoir for this son of soil, that four hours just slipped like a blip and there was no hurry to conclude it! I had then decided to write about this legendary poet and lyricist and the brain gave a gentle nudge to write about him as a part of the series celebrating 75 years of Independence through cinema. The occasion served when his death anniversary was celebrated on 24 October 2022.
After having returned from Pakistan good, he came to Mumbai to try his luck as a lyricist. Though he made his debut as a lyricist in 1948 with Azadi Kee Rah Mein. 1950 was the year when he announced his arrival with a...

Unlike Hollywood, where musicals are a separate genre, no Hindi film is complete without a full suite of songs – and they are what keeps a film alive in the minds of the people long after it has met its fate at the box office. Amitabh Bachchan fans may not recall the plots of his old landmark films, but the songs still strike a chord.
On the Big B’s 80th birthday, let us revisit some of his musical hits from his first decade of super and megastardom, where the songs were not just romantic interludes with his lady love of the moment, but also served various other purposes.
These helped him to express a range of moods, reveal his innermost yearnings, his philosophy of life, advancing the plot as action takes place in the background or surreptitiously, or evoke humour to lighten the mood.

Known for originality in his stories and story telling, for presenting unexplored themes in a commercial format, ‘Chup’ is filmmaker R Balki’s most ambitious film till date. Ambition not in big budget terms but in scale of thought. Releasing on 23rd September, 2022, it’s a romantic psychopath thriller, a thought he had after ‘Cheeni Kum’ and decided to write it much later. The poster revealing the release date released today.
Speaking of the same R Balki said, “Chup is special for more than one reason. For me the biggest reason is it marks the official debut of Amitabh Bachchan as a music composer. Amitji saw Chup and played an instinctive original melody on his piano as he relived the film. It was his way of expressing his feelings for the film, paying a tribute. This composition, his gift to the film, will be the end title track of Chup.

Gangubai Kathiawadi
Music and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali
A very young very pained girl face is being painted, prepared for something not very pleasant. She is grimacing and to add to her pain a firm hand holds her face, stuffs her mouth with a cloth and pierces her nose with something as sharp as the dialogues of this film. As she bleeds the blood mingles with her cheap makeup.
This opening sequence is like a piercing scream in the dark that sets the mood for a film that defies analysis. How do we describe what Sanjay Leela Bhansali has done with his Gangubai? And where are the words to reify the illimitable pain that Alia Bhatt’s eyes convey? She smiles, she laughs, she dances, she bullies her enemies and berates her friends… But her eyes remain ceaselessly swathed in sorrow.

Today I woke up with the info of the 97-year-old legend Chandrashekhar aka Chandrashekharji urf Chandrashekhar sahab breathing his last at his residence. He died peacefully in his sleep. A series of flashbacks started haunting me since I know Chandrashekharji personally as my father’s dear friend. As I am writing this memorial, people from the film industry and media fraternity will be offering respects and by the time you all will read this our dear Chandrashekharji’s last rites will be in process or done but memories which I hold as a person and as a film journalist will remain forever.
This is perhaps the most personal memorial for me of a person who I admired immensely as an individual / human more than anything else.
Born in Hyderabad on 7 July 1923, Chandrashekhar dropped out of college and moved to Mumbai with a diploma in western dancing from the UK. On recommendation from singer Shamshad Begum,...

Now in his 80s & retired, Vakil, a former executive producer at Yash Raj Films (Yrf) worked with the late film-making legend Yash Chopra in some of the banner's most unforgettable films between 1993 and the early 2000s.
The name Mahen Vakil may not automatically ring a bell in the minds of the most ardent Bollywood buffs, but if we told you he was a vital cog in the production of such films as Darr (1993), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Mohabbatein (2000), you would surely do a double take.
Mahen Vakil became the first employee of Yrf when Chopra started his production house, which is currently celebrating its golden jubilee year.
He recalls Chopra's passion as a creative artiste. "He never compromised on his work! When he would explain a scene to an artiste, he would get so involved that you would wish Yash ji would rather perform the scene!

It is agreed by all that Bollywood is lights, colour and music. It’s a little overacting, a little or sometimes a lot of dramatics, but most of all it sets itself apart by the power, emotionality and beauty conveyed in its music. For those who live for Bollywood’s songs, it is a privilege to have it in our lives: to know that any feeling can be expressed with just the right formation of tune, singers and lyrics. The tune is formulated by a composer, the singers perform based on instruction and style but it all wraps around the lyrics. A lyricist is a poet and in Bollywood he/she is given great powers to make even the most club beat song into a heartbreaker. And with the current state of the world, we have a chance to pause and look back on some of Bollywood’s greatest masters of this art,...

The final track of Begum Jaan, the soulful Woh Subaah Hum Hi Se Aayegi has been released. Penned by the popular Indian Poet Sahir Ludhianvi, the song has been sung by the versatile Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal who have always known to give us songs to remember.
Here’s something cool: the track has a very interesting story behind it. Based on the partition era, Bharat Bhagyo Bhidata of Rajkahini (Bengali version of Begum Jaan), garnered great acclaim. During the making of Begum Jaan, Srijit Mukerji was left to ponder about how the final track should be. Giving us the backstory, Srijit said, “We were contemplating translating the four lesser known stanzas of the poem (only the first one was declared the National Anthem). We were hoping to get Gulzaar Saab on board but it dawned on us that a Supreme Court ruling forbids us to add new lyrics...

The very versatile Irrfan Khan is preparing to plunge into the part of poet par excellence Sahir Ludhianvi in new director Jasmeet Reen's bio-pic. In fact Irrfan has been in preparation for the role for nearly two years now, catching up with Sahir's lyrics on his I-Pod and reading up as much as he could about the man, the poet and the lover. For a while it was rumoured that Farhan Akhtar may take over the part. "Why go by rumours? It was even rumoured that Arjun Kapoor was to play Sahir Ludhianvi! It was always Irrfan. His sensitivities and his personality suit the part," says someone close to the project. Sanjay Leela Bhansali who co-produces the Sahir bio-pic with Arshi Dua also approves of Irrfan as Sahir. "In fact Bhansali wanted Irrfan to do the voiceover for Bajirao Mastani. Irrfan immediately agreed and asked for the technical team to...

Dubai, Dec. 11: Asha Bhosle has said that claimed that the music industry has lost the soul in its music.
The 80-year-old singer said that till the 80s film music was good before slowly waning because the lyricists such as Sahir Ludhianvi Sahab, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Shakeel Badayuni, and H.S. Bihari were no longer there, Gulf News reported.
Bhosle said now anything and everything sells because if one keeps eating rubbish, ultimately, they will get used to it, thinking that it's good.
She added similarly, if one keeps listening to cheap songs, they will start enjoying them and that's how the public works, as they will take anything as long as it's free.
Bhosle cited examples of songs having lyrics like.

It is going to be quite a coming together of talent. Filmmaker-singer-actor Farhan Akhtar will star as writer-poet Sahir Ludhianvi in a bio-pic that new director Jasmeet Reen would direct.
Ashi Dua who produced Bombay Talkies, that very effective and sincere 4-story homage to 100 years of Indian cinema on behalf of Viacom 18, would be producing the project chronicling the life of Sahir Ludhianvi.
While other details are still to be worked out we did get some vital details on the project from someone very close to the project who said, "The film would focus on the poetry and the love between Sahir Ludhianvi and author Amrita Pritam. They shared a stormy relationship that lasted for decades. Farhan is the natural choice for the role since his father is a poet and Farhan himself writes poetry."
We also hear Farhan would be singing some of Sahir's immortal lines.

Among the few silent films that remain are three Indo-German co-productions that predate the arrival of the German technicians and directors who worked in the Bombay Talkies studio in the 1930s. The Light of Asia was shot in India but edited and processed in Germany and intertitled in English. The script was adapted from Sir Edwin Arnold's epic poem The Light of Asia (1861) while the opening credits proclaim it was "Shown by Royal Command at Windsor Castle, April 27 1926" and that it benefited greatly from help offered by the Maharaja of Jaipur. The film shows westerners touring India (Mumbai, Delhi, Varanasi) who come to Bodh Gaya, the site of Gautam Buddha's Enlightenment.

But thespian Tom Alter - often called a "firang" for his western looks but who insists he is an Indian - desires to enact the roles of two stalwarts of partition, Jawaharlal Nehru and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
"Jinnah is a very controversial figure to play. But I personally feel there is something to learn from him. Why he became a fanatic, no one knows. If we can find that out, I am sure there must be something to learn from it," Alter.
