Believe it or not, the iconic Superman: The Animated Series (Stas) might have never happened! Creator Bruce Timm, fresh off the success of Batman: The Animated Series (Btas), was primed for another superhero project.

In the 1990s, as Kids’ WB! Since the boom of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its impact on Hollywood, many major film auteurs have spoken critically of the genre that has been dominating the medium for years. Among them included the blockbuster pioneer Steven Spielberg, often considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, and it’s hard to argue otherwise.
But while Spielberg once predicted that superhero films are doomed to meet the same end as Westerns, the filmmaker is not new to the genre, as he did helm a superhero parody in the ’90s.
Steven Spielberg’s Lone Superhero Project Was a Result of Batman: The Animated Series

The early ’80s and ’90s were a great time to be a fan of the Caped Crusader until Joel Schumacher dropped the ball with Batman & Robin, which led to the property being put on ice for eight years.

Bruce Timm’s Batman Beyond is one of the most timeless animated series that showcases a strong storyline, which has broken all the typical Batman myths with its unique animation style. The series is set in a futuristic Gotham City, showcasing Terry McGinnis under the mantle, under the guidance of an old Bruce Wayne.
Terry McGinnis as Batman in Batman Beyond
The series had taken a bold departure from a traditional narrative, allowing room for exploration of new themes and characters that will retain the character’s popularity. However, the show was a result of an impossible demand that could not be met by Bruce Timm and his team members. None of them wanted to work on a new show, as they were already busy with other important DC projects. Hence, they came up with a great solution, creating one of the greatest Batman shows.

Developed by Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett, Superman: The Animated Series originally aired in 1996 on Kids’ WB. It was the second series in the DC Animated Universe after Batman: The Animated Series. The animated series based on Superman comics by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster received critical acclaim for its writing, voice-overs, modernization of Superman’s comic book mythos, and maturity.
Superman: The Animated Series pays tribute to both old and modern-day Superman which has been appreciated by the audience and the critics. The animated series adapted many villains from the comics, including Lex Luthor, Brainiac, and Darkseid. Bruce Timm remembers working on the series that debuted twenty-five years ago.

Bruce Timm’s iconic Superman series, Superman: The Animated Series, is one of the rare few projects to have done the character justice. The 1996 series was one of the first to make the character seem realistic, rather than boring or too self-righteous. So much so that many would call him the most accurate version of the character.
Bruce Timm’s Superman: The Animated Series
There is absolutely no doubt that Timm’s contributions helped considerably in making the show what it is today. Being excellent as both an animator and producer, the projects that he has been involved with have become some of the best in DC’s animated universe. This is why it is interesting to find out that he created the Superman series out of spite towards one of the most respected filmmakers of all time.

When a pair of "Tiny Toon Adventures" animators tried their hand at reinventing Batman for the small screen back in 1992, they created the definitive version of the Dark Knight for many a '90s kid. Led by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, "Batman: The Animated Series" was a big hit for Fox Kids for the three years of its airing. The show re-envisioned Batman for a new generation, picking up where Tim Burton left off with 1989's "Batman" and reintroducing the dark tone that had been so central to the character's inception.
With a Superman film in the works, Warner Bros. Animation president Jean MacCurdy asked Timm if he wanted to cartoons with the DC superhero (via Comicology). Timm and Alan Burnett ("Batman: Mask of the Phantasm") partnered up to work their magic with Superman. "Superman: The Animated Series" occupies a curious middle ground in the DC Animated Universe, the continuity built by artists including Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. It never earned the rapturous critical reception of "Batman: The Animated Series," which to this day generates oral histories extolling its greatness. It also lacked the epic scope of "Justice League," which told multi-part stories featuring a huge cast of characters across time and space. But "Superman" should not be underestimated. At its best, the show's staff reinvented and condensed comics canon as elegantly as "Batman" did. Crossover episodes united Superman with Batman, Lobo and even Green Lantern, paving the way for the widescreen action of "Justice League." Best of all, "Superman: The Animated Series" introduced characters from Jack Kirby's Fourth World, including the nefarious Darkseid.
The DC Animated Universe ended in the early 2000s, but continues to influence contemporary animated series based on the characters to this day.

"Batman: The Animated Series" is not only one of the greatest cartoons of all time, but is also considered by many to be the definitive version of the Dark Knight. Batman lost his voice recently, with the heartbreaking death of Kevin Conroy, who has become synonymous with the Caped Crusader since first voicing him for the show in 1992, which led to countless other appearances. He has been immortalized by his unparalleled performance and will always be Batman to multiple generations.
"Batman: The Animated Series" was created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, neither of whom had experience running a show prior to landing the job. Both had worked on "Tiny Toons," but they didn't really know one another before becoming the dynamic duo behind the beloved Batman show. Based on Timm's talent for character design and Radomski's excellent backgrounds, the pair were asked by Warner Bros. Animation to come up with a two-minute Batman presentation.

The second wave of Batmania was ignited in 1989 when Tim Burton finally got a big screen adaptation of the comic book hero into theaters. It was such a wild success in terms of merchandising that Warner Bros wanted more and quickly. Since features take two to three years, they needed something sooner and the success of their Tiny Tunes and Animaniacs encouraged them to bring the Dark Knight back to television.
Thankfully, the project was placed in the hands of Alan Burnett, Bruce Timm, and Paul Dini who were not only fans of the character but the earliest cartoon fare. Taking a visual cue from Burton and a stylistic one from the Fleischer Brothers Studio, they produced a Batman cartoon unlike anything from the 1960s or 1970s. Batman the Animated Series was sampled on prime time in September 1992 before launching on Fox Kids and for three seasons, there was nothing quite like it.

Animated fare was very slow to integrate, largely because there was a paucity of useful source material to mine from. In the 1990s, that began to change, largely thanks to Milestone Media, a multicultural operation that had a line of comics distributed through DC Comics.
Milestone’s best known character is Static, a young urban teen with a definite modern-day Peter Parker vibe to him. Virgil Hawkins just wanted live his life when he was accidentally exposed to mutagen gas, giving him electromagnetic powers. The show arrived in 2000 with a bang and became a cause because it not only featured a positive image of a black male, but closely resembled the source material thanks to Milestone co-creators Dwayne McDuffie and Denys Cowan being heavily involved in the show.
