When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 3, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.
Anything that was deemed paranormal, supernatural or unexplainable was called an “X-File” — the cases that no one else in the agency wanted to touch.
In the show’s 11 seasons, they dealt with more than just aliens and shadowy government conspiracies. Their cases involved demons, ghosts, serial killers, sea monsters and even vampires. In celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary, here are the episodes with the scariest villains and killer creatures.

In its most infamous monster-of-the-week episode, "Home," Fox's "The X-Files" took the idea of small-town American isolationism to the furthest extreme network TV would allow. First broadcast in October 1996 — two months before the TV Parental Guidelines system went into effect — "Home" juxtaposes Norman Rockwell images with hidden horrors that could be triggering even now for some viewers. In the span of one hour, the episode toggles between blue skies, baseball, a cornfield and Cadillac, '50s pop, references to "The Andy Griffith Show," and much uglier subject matter like infanticide, birth defects, home invasion, violence against Black people, and an incestuous mutant family.
To say it delved into taboos would be an understatement. This wouldn't be your average rerun: Fox withheld airing "Home" again for a full three years until October 1999, by which time the episode would be carrying the show's first and last TV-ma rating. "Only on Halloween ... would...

Building on a “beloved international treasure” like The CW’s “Supernatural,” which ran for 15 years and amassed an envious number of devotees, is not an easy feat, but “The Winchesters” showrunner and executive producer Robbie Thompson finds the daunting task as thrilling as it is challenging. Thompson, who was involved as a producer on the “mothership” for five seasons, was deliberate in crafting a world that paid homage to yet stood apart from “Supernatural,” crediting the creative team behind Chaos Machine Productions for its 1970s take on the preexisting universe.

There has been no shortage of tears on Supernatural over the past 15 seasons, but perhaps no moment was more filled with waterworks than the heartbreaking ending of Season 2’s “Heart.”
With tears streaming down his face, Sam reluctantly prepared to shoot Madison (guest star Emmanuelle Vaugier), a woman with whom he’d formed a romantic connection — and who was also a werewolf with an uncontrollable killing streak. The emotional scene captured the sometimes devastating personal toll of the job on the Winchesters, while emphasizing that Supernatural was a series that was not afraid to embrace the more sensitive feelings of its two male characters.

Twelve years ago, Supernatural introduced an angel into the Winchesters’ world when Misha Collins made his debut as Castiel in the Season 4 premiere — and literal sparks exploded onscreen as viewers exclaimed, “Omg!”
Cas’ first scene — one of TVLine’s Most Memorable Character Entrances — was striking on multiple levels: The reveal that angels existed and God had sent Castiel to resurrect Dean because he had work for the hunter was hugely significant for the mythology. The moment is also iconic for its distinctive dialogue (“I’m the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition”) and the indelible visual...

Nearly 15 years after the Winchester brothers hit the screen in 2005, the stars and team behind Supernatural bid farewell to the long-running show. Series creator Eric Kripke, stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and the rest of the Supernatural family shared their gratitude on social media as filming came to an end on Thursday.
“This was the first #Supernatural scene we shot. This month marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most iconic “The X-Files” episodes of all time, “Humbug.” Written by Darin Morgan and directed by the late Kim Manners, this episode about a series of murders in a circus town originally aired March 31, 1995 on Fox. It was the first hour that perfectly blended horror with comedy, a combination fans later saw in such Morgan-penned episodes as “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose,” “War of the Coprophages” and “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space.” (See all Darin Morgan episodes below in our photo gallery.)

When “The X-Files” debuted Sept. 10, 1993, it broke a lot of rules about television series. So at a press gathering, the creative group was asked what the show was aiming for. David Duchovny deadpanned, “Syndication.”
The series has surpassed even his expectations, running nine seasons (with an added two-season revival) and is still airing worldwide after 25 years.
On the day that the show debuted, Variety reviewer Tony Scott raved about the “ingenious script” by creator-exec producer Chris Carter. Scott continued, “The artful presentation gives TV sci-fi a boost … the series kicks off with drive and imagination.”
The show earned respectable ratings for Fox Broadcasting, in its first year of seven-nights-a-week programming. Soon there was a growing community of “X-Philes,” who used the new internet (aka “information superhighway”) to exchange ideas with other fans about the actions of FBI agents Mulder and Scully. “Stranger Things” star David Harbour was a struggling twentysomething actor in New York in the late 1990s when he came across what would become his favorite TV episode of all time: “The X-Files” Season 6 installment “Field Trip.”
It’s an unconventional choice: One of the show’s classic “Monster of the Week” stories, this one was a bit different. Mulder and Scully are investigating the mysterious death of a couple, but it turns out the culprit was a giant fungal growth that causes hallucinations and ingests its victims. The two of them are soon trapped themselves, and experiencing their own weird hallucinations.
“So you’re being digested by the earth and you’re hallucinating your life,” Harbour said. “When I watched it I was in my 20s, I was really into that concept. We’re all being digested by the earth and we’re all just dreaming a life that...

“It’s a reminder that no matter how overwhelming our anxieties might be, they will soon be resolved when we are dead and buried for all eternity.”
Thus does the preposterously Teutonic psychiatrist prescribe a walk in the graveyard as a cure for life’s angst. Even life’s most terrifying and mysterious questions, he asserts, have answers. That answer is that nonsense reigns and the grave is inevitable. In ‘Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster,’ the show takes a hard right into the cornfield to spend an hour dissecting Mulder’s lifelong quest not to find the truth but to believe, to experience faith, to place value not just in the unknown but in the pursuit thereof. Silly, dreamlike, and almost certainly non-canon, the episode cuts closer to what makes The X-Files special and worthwhile than either of Season 10′s previous entries. If last week’s ‘Founder’s Mutation...

When The X-Files returned to Fox, it brought more than just Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) back with it. Eagle-eyed fans can tell you this. In "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster," not only did the show bring back stoner characters played by Tyler Labine and Nicole Parker, but it also cast Alex Diakun in a new role, featured Mulder in red briefs (never forget) and had callbacks to Scully being immortal, her dog and the 1970s series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. And that's not all. Two familiar names were featured on tombstones in the graveyard: Kim Manners and Jack Hardy. Manners directed more than 50 episodes of The X-Files and Hardy served as the first Ad on Millennium and The X-Files: I...

A review of tonight's The X-Files coming up just as soon as the internet isn't good for me... "It's silly." -Mulder "Life's hopeless. A few fleeting moments of happiness surrounded by crushing loss and grief. Why bother?" -Guy Mann From the moment I learned that Darin Morgan would be writing a new script(*) for this X-Files revival, my attitude was, "Even if the rest of it's terrible... dayenu." I hated the premiere and had mixed feelings about last week's episode, but Morgan's "Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster" lived up to every wish and hope I had for it. (*) New-ish, anyway. This was actually a modified version of "The M Word," an unproduced episode Morgan wrote for Frank Spotnitz's short-lived Night Stalker remake (and note that Guy Mann's wardrobe resembles what Kolchak wore on the original series). You can read "The M Word" script here, if you're curious...

From The Twilight Zone to Penny Dreadful, Doctor Who and more, Den Of Geek’s writers revisit the TV episodes that truly terrify them…
It’s Halloween! Icicles are glistening from window sills. Chestnuts are roasting on open fires. North Pole elves are… hang on, no. None of that nice, fluffy stuff is happening. At Halloween, demonic creatures hunt for flesh, monsters creep out of their graves, and TV does its level best to freak us all the hell out.
In the spirit of all that, we asked our writers to select and share the TV episodes, horror or otherwise, that have made them whimper with fear. Here they all are, 31 of them, because, well, at Halloween, we like things to add up to 31.
Note that this isn’t a Top 10, or a Best Of, nor is it listed in order of scariness. It’s a collection of the particular...

The road so far …
It wasn’t exactly easy for genre television in 2005. Well, it’s really never been easy for genre television ever in the history of television, but in 2005, a deluge of genre shows premiered and almost all of them had fallen prey to the swift axe of the television gods by the next year. Start by thinking about television now. It’s a fruitful time for horror and science fiction and fantasy. There are a multitude of genre shows, running the gamut from The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, to True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. They’re all massive hits.
Now, think of all of the shows that premiered around that time in 2005. There was Surface, and that was cancelled after ten episodes by NBC. Invasion, a well-regarded show written by Shaun Cassidy (who created one of my favorite shows, American Gothic) and that was cancelled...

Well here we are. One of the worst episodes, not just of this season, but of the entire series. It doesn’t really even feel like an X-Files episode to be honest, it tries though…I think.
The story is one of the classic coming of age monster stories that The X-Files has done before, and much better at that. After a teenage daredevil dies during a stunt attempt on a Jack-ass rip off show, Doggett and Reyes bring Scully on board to investigate why flies would want to eat out the inside of his head. If that somehow sounds interesting to you…trust me it isn’t. The story doesn’t offer up anything new or compelling at all.
It’s fairly soon we realize that one of the teenagers, Dylan, is the source of the insect related troubles and he’s doing it all to protect his childhood friend Natalie.

Few people have as much insight into the rise and run of "The X-Files" as Frank Spotnitz.
Spotnitz joined the show as a writer in its second season and worked as a writer/producer until the Fox drama ended its nine-season run. He rose to the level of executive producer, directed episodes of the show and worked on the "X-Files" movies that were released during and after the show's run.
None of it was easy.
Part of the reason an obscure show that aired on Friday nights rose to such heights of popularity and influence was because Chris Carter, the show's creator and executive producer, was a demanding boss.
"He was really uncompromising," Spotnitz said in an interview about his time on "The X-Files." "He didn’t care if you didn't like him because he was being so difficult, but he just insisted that you do your best."

The X-Files, a television juggernaut of the nineties that brought paranormal enjoyment to millions of us on a weekly basis for nine seasons and a twisting, patient storyline that kept most hooked to the end.
Week in, week out the dynamic duo of FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully fought monsters both metaphorical and actual in their consuming quest for answers. The truth was out there, but would it ever be unravelled from the web of conspiracy and cover-up surrounding it? On top of all this, would brilliant believer Mulder and studiously sexy Scully ever get together?
It spawned 202 episodes, two feature films and two spin-off shows, and behind all this were a creative team of writers and producers such as Chris Carter, Vince Gilligan, Frank Spotnitz, Kim Manners, and James Wong to name a few.

Growing up I was a massive fan of The X-Files. And I don't mean that in a "Oh, cool show, I'll watch" kind of way. I went to conventions. I collected memorabilia. I dreamt of the day Mulder and Scully finally consummated their mutual love in a wild display of passion that would make their alien observers blush. As a result of all these inappropriate emotions, I also put way too much thought into Gillian Anderson's real life relationship with David Duchovny.
Video Rewind - David Directs an X-Files Ep
Tabloids were littered with stories about the two of them hating one another by the time The X-Files wrapped up its run, while trustworthy people on set constantly recounted stories that made my heart sigh. Like director Kim Manners, who recounted the aftermath of a particularly emotional scene. He said, "We got the shot, and we cut it and printed it; the nurse came and took...

Supernatural 7.20 Recap: The Great Winchester Caper...With Bonus Felicia Day
There are all sorts of different Supernatural episodes that appeal to me. I love the big, dramatic mythology episodes where Dean cries because something happened (likely someone dying). I love the hilarious episodes where everything is just so silly. And I love episodes like this week’s episode that was just a fun hour of television with a great guest star that also moved the story forward.
Charlie, From It
Over at Dick Roman’s company, we met Charlie (guest star Felicia Day), an adorable It employee and part-time hacker who caught Roman’s eye. Since he finally got his hands on Frank Deveraux’s hard drive, he wants Charlie to get through the encryption. She started working on it immediately until she ran into a few road blocks...like a War Games simulator Frank had built into the drive based on the 1980s movie.

I'm going to start with a claim; one that I'm sure will be accredited by fans, and dismissed by opposition. Supernatural has - as it continues to prove, season after season, episode after episode - one of the best writing teams in the business. And I'm not just on about the horror genre - oh no, I mean of all genres to date.
It's their ability to keep the show original that is most refreshing. When stripped to its core, Supernatural is just another show about monsters, and the subsequent hunting of said monsters. However, what makes Supernatural unique, what really makes it worthy of such accolade and praise is the ingenuity of both its writers and, most importantly, its executive producers. Eric Kripke, Robert Singer, McG, David Nutter, Kim Manners (who tragically passed away during filming of the fourth season), Sera Gamble - each brings their own chimeric outlook...

We would argue that the scare factor on "Supernatural" has decreased over the years, mostly due to the fact that by now, we as an audience are harder to surprise. When we caught up with series star Jared Padalecki at San Diego Comic-Con, however, he suggested that Season 7 may be the scariest yet -- at least inside Sam Winchester's head.
"I got chills on my arm. I don't think I've ever gotten that," he says. "There were parts where reading the script I was almost watching the show." He gives a full-body shudder for effect. "We've seen these guys bear their burdens and wear their fear with courage and with stoicism, and just flash through it, and that's honorable, that's how people get through their day, hopefully, but here we see Sam scared. Truly terrified. For somebody who's seen what he's seen to really be losing it, it kind of gives me chills.

Season 6 of "Supernatural" has devoted lots of time to rounding out the character of Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) as we learn more not only about his daily life, but about his past.
In the most recent episode, "...And Then There Were None," we learned that once upon a time, Rufus (Steven Williams) and Bobby were hunting partners, similar to the way Sam and Dean are now.
Just as we were getting some insight into their time on the road together, Rufus was killed by the monster (or the herpe, as Dean would say) possessing Bobby. Zap2it caught up with Beaver at PaleyFest's "Supernatural" event on Sunday to see whether the death would have a lasting emotional impact on Bobby.
Beaver assures us that Bobby didn't walk away from Rufus' grave unscathed, which we'll see in the upcoming episode "My Heart Will Go On." He says, "That deals a little...

Here at Zap2it, we interact with tons of TV fans, and it's always refreshing to see when fans turn their mutual admiration for a show or actor into a way to give back to the community. "Supernatural" fans are a passionate bunch, and they've always been highly active in using their power for good.
One great example of that is SupportSupernatural.com, which has raised over $50,000 in two years for actor Jared Padalecki's favorite cause, A Dog's Life Rescue animal shelter in Los Angeles, a volunteer-run organization. The fundraiser, run by "Supernatural" fans Lindsay Warren and Heather Vitas, has set another lofty goal for 2011: they want to raise $30,000.
Over the course of ten months, the organization will be giving away 10 prize packs donated by Creation Entertainment -- they're the ones who run the highly successful "Supernatural" conventions. In order to be eligible to win a prize pack,...

Fair Warning #1 - If you know me, you know I hate meta episodes. Don't get me wrong. I love meta. Changing Channels was awesome and little winks like in Caged Heat when Crowley said, "Castiel, haven't seen you all season" make my day. I just can't stand meta for meta's sake and the refuse it makes canon in its wake. To me, only The Monster at the End of the Book and The Real Ghostbusters were meta episodes, both of which make my Top 10 Worst Episodes list. I've dreaded this episode. However, Unforgiven and Mannequin 3 were both subpar episodes to me, equally boring and equally filler. So, tired of writing negatively about Supernatural for 2 weeks, I decided not to recap this one. Until I saw it. Unlike many, it is not my favorite episode of season 6, not even close. But, it would land squarely in the middle for me. Some...

It's no secret that "Supernatural" has been heavily inspired by "The X-Files," but the influence has never been quite so literal as it is in this brand new clip from Friday's episode, "Clap Your Hands if You Believe."
The episode begins with a classic cold open and leads into a title sequence that we expect geeks across the land to completely freak out over.
"When we decided to do an alien abduction as the teaser, and we immediately thought to do the title sequence," executive producer Sera Gamble tells AOL.
The cast and crew still mourn the loss of Kim Manners, the beloved producer who passed away in January of 2009. Manners was best known for his extensive work on "The X-Files," and he brought the same sensibility and standard of quality to "Supernatural."
"It would be hard to find someone working on the show who isn't an 'X-Files' fan," Gamble says.

Those still pining for the loss of Buffy, Angel and the glory days of The X-Files could do a lot worse than embracing this stylish horror saga to satiate their cravings. Playing like a straight-laced Buffy, Supernatural tells the tragic story of the Winchester family, a father and his two sons dedicated to tracking and hunting the forces of darkness that killed their mother. Trained as skilled warriors, Sam and Dean track their missing father and slay all manner of ghosts and goblins along the way.
While the idea of two good looking young brothers dissecting their fractured relationship and familial guilt while driving cross country in search of an unseen father figure might seem a little bit teen soap opera here, some industry veterans, notably X-Files’ Kim Manners, ensure that this is some decently adult fare. Though there is nothing particularly groundbreaking here – sparks of ironic humor that could be from the Whedonverse,...

It's rather remarkable how Jensen Ackles can stay in such high spirits. As Dean Winchester, he's been in nearly every scene of every episode of Supernatural for five years, but at the 100th episode party, he was still as excited as a little kid.
100 Funniest Supernatural Quotes>>
When I talked to him, Jensen fondly reminisced about five seasons and 100 episodes, looking back at the moment he first new the show was special (it happened a lot sooner than you might think), how he's managed to cope with the long hours and his favorite prank on the set that involved the late Kim Manners.

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

Salvaged from the unpublished Starlog #375. Posted here for the record. The science fiction universe sadly salutes these fantastic talents who died earlier this year.

Charles H. Schneer (January) The veteran producer who shepherded all of Ray Harryhausen’s movies from It Came From Beneath The Sea (1955) to Clash Of The Titans (1981). Those classic genre films included Earth Vs. Supernatural and the entire television community suffered a great loss last year when director and producer Kim Manners passed away. His work on shows like Supernatural and The X-Files was fantastic and he certainly earned the respect of fans and his peers.
However, some fans were shocked and disappointed during Sunday's Emmy Award telecast when, for some reason, Manners was left out of the "In Memoriam" segment honoring members of the television industry who passed away over the previous year.

Those of you who are of a certain age no doubt remember the phrase "Must See TV" and its application to NBC's Thursday night lineup of shows during the 1990's. It's been a while since any other network could make that same claim, but starting this Thursday, September 10th, it's possible horror fans will have their own "Must See TV" night on The CW thanks to the pairing of The Vampire Diaries with Supernatural.
We have new previews from each below. First up, at 8:00 pm Et/7:00 pm Ct is the freshman season of The Vampire Diaries:
Four months after the tragic car accident that killed their parents, 17-year-old Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev, "DeGrassi: The Next Generation") and her 15-year-old brother, Jeremy (Steven R. A clip is released for the April 23 episode of "Supernatural". Adam, a 19-year-old boy who calls Dean and Sam to look for John Winchester, is at a diner with the brothers, recalling his childhood experience with John. Dean is suspicious of him but soon draws the gun underneath the table.
Adam, who is played by Jake Abel, claims that he is the son of John with a nurse. Dean and Sam agree to meet him with the assumption that he is a demon trying to lure them into a trap. When they found out that Adam is really part of their family, Dean is infuriated by the fact that Adam was raised "normally".
The episode is called "Jump the Shark" and reportedly, there will be a tribute to the late Kim Manners which can only be spotted by an eagle-eye viewer.
