A musical inspired by the life of Alicia Keys and a play that loosely draws on the story of Fleetwood Mac — Hell’s Kitchen and Stereophonic, respectively — cleaned up at the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. Both received 13 nominations, more than any other show this year.
Hell’s Kitchen was nominated for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (for Kristoffer Diaz), Best Direction (Michael Greif), and Best Choreography (Camille A. Brown), while its stars Maleah Joi Moon, Shoshana Bean, and Kecia Lewis all picked up acting nods. But despite its impressive haul,...

One of the most expensive Hong Kong movies ever made (Hk$350 million or 41 million euros), “The Goldfinger” also brings together Felix Chong, Tony Leung and Andy Lau after “Infernal Affairs”, where the first co-wrote. Set in the 80s, the script is based on the story of Carrian Group, a Hong Kong corporation which rose rapidly before collapsing shortly afterwards due to a corruption scandal.

The movie actually starts with Henry Ching's arrest, who is based on Carrian Group founder George Tan, Lau Kai-yuen, principal investigator of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac). A bit later, the timeline changes to the mid-70s, with Henry Ching arriving in Hong Kong and trying to get a job as an engineer. Considering the place is filled with people of the particular profession, he has no luck. Although so it seems, since he is eventually employed by K.

Filipino writer-producer-director Ramona S Diaz is unafraid of a fight.
She plans to release her politically controversial feature documentary And So It Begins in the Philippines herself later this year, galvanised by the rection to her 2003 film Imelda. The film premiered at Sundance in January and had its European premiere in the international competition of the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival last week.
Imelda was about the life of former Filipino First Lady Imelda Marcos. Marcos unsuccessfully took Diaz to court in an attempt to stop the documentary being shown in the Philippines.

Here Lies Love, the costly David Byrne-Fatboy Slim immersive musical that required an extensive renovation of the Broadway Theatre for its dance club setting, will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, November 26.
When it closes, Here Lies Love will have played 33 previews and 150 regular performances at the Broadway Theatre.
At an estimated cost of $22 million, Here Lies Love, which uses a dance club setting to tell the story of the rise and fall of Imelda Marcos, will now be among Broadway’s priciest flops in recent years.
A long-gestating production, the musical had its world premiere Off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2013, returning to the venue in 2014-2015. A West End production debuted at London’s Royal National Theatre in 2014, and a production opened at Seattle Repertory Theatre in 2017.

‘Here Lies Love’ Teams With Gold House, The Asian American Foundation for Broadway Ticket Initiative
Broadway’s Here Lies Love, the disco-pop musical from David Byrne and Fatboy Slim about the infamous former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos, is launching a new ticket initiative tied to Filipino American Heritage Month.
In an effort to increase access to the historic musical, which features Broadway’s first all-Filipino cast, Here Lies Love‘s producers have partnered with Gold House and The Asian American Foundation (Taaf) on “Democracy in Action.” The initiative aims to raise $1 million in tax-deductible donations, which will go to subsidizing 33 percent of tickets to the show in October, a cultural heritage month for Filipino Americans.
“We are extremely proud of this initiative and grateful to our colleagues at Gold House and Taaf for recognizing the unique opportunity Here Lies Love creates to broaden the demographics of Broadway audiences,” said the show’s producers Jose Antonio Vargas, Patrick Catullo, Diana Dimenna, Clint Ramos,...

Thursday night’s audience at Broadway’s Here Lies Love got a surprise bonus performance when DJ Fatboy Slim, who co-wrote the musical with David Byrne, took to the stage and spun a one-night-only set following the show.
Among those audience members: Byrne, who hugged and did a brief dance with Slim (aka Norman Cook) when the DJ jumped from his stage booth to the dance floor of the heavily renovated Broadway Theatre. The DJ’s 90-minute set was his first New York City show in more than 10 years.
During the set, Slim spun such records as Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” and John Paul Young’s “Love Is in the Air,” not to mention Byrne’s own “Lazy” and his Talking Heads classic “Once in a Lifetime.”

Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines who became notorious for the way she used her position to fund a lavish lifestyle, will be at the center of a new limited series that is being developed by producer Lisa Saltzman. “Chasing Imelda” is inspired by journalist Katherine Ellison’s biography, “Imelda: Steel Butterfly of the Philippines.” The announcement comes in a moment of, I guess, rediscovery for Imelda. After all, Marcos is the central figure in a new Broadway musical “Here Lies Love” from David Byrne and Fatboy Slim (there’s just something about all those shoes).
Ellison is a journalist, strategist and writer, whose examinations of the corruption of Imelda and her husband Ferdinand Marcos for The San Jose Mercury News won her a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1986. This limited series reveals the dark side of one of history’s most notorious figures and showcases...

Lea Salonga had strong words after unsettling video showing unauthorized fans just outside her dressing room seeking photos went viral. “That attitude of entitlement gets a f–k that s–t from me,” Salonga tweeted Sunday in response.
The legendary singer/actress, who plays Imelda Marcos in “Here Lies Love,” was filmed in her personal dressing room after the production.
In the video, Salonga is seen taking photos with authorized fans. But two Filipino fans — one male and one female — lingered outside her door and requested their own photos.
Lea Salonga was not wrong to insist on respecting her personal space in this instance. These “fans” are beyond entitled and rude. But my key takeaway here is there’s no one managing or securing their backstage area?pic.twitter.com/dRuJWY1HdX

David Byrne has reached an agreement with the American Federation of Musicians’ Local 802 over his upcoming Broadway staging of Here Lies Love, Variety reports. The show will begin previews on June 17th with 12 musicians after the union called for Byrne to utilize live music in the production.
“Broadway is a very special place with the best musicians and performances in the world, and we are glad this agreement honors that tradition,” Local 802 president and executive director Tina Gagliardi said in a statement. The union previously criticized Byrne for his plans to use pre-recorded music in the musical, noting that the move would violate a mandated contract clause requiring 19 musicians to be hired for all musicals staged on Broadway. Gagliardi called the backing track structure “an existential threat to Broadway” that threatened the livelihoods of working musicians.

A labor union representing Broadway musicians has expressed its opposition to David Byrne’s upcoming staging of Here Lies Love due to the show’s plans to stage the production with pre-recorded tracks instead of live music.
“A show with no live music and just pre-recorded tracks is absolutely an existential threat to Broadway — and is a cultural threat to musical theater worldwide,” Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians President and Executive Director Tino Gagliardi said in a statement. “For generations, audiences have experienced Broadway shows with live music performed by the best musicians in the world, and by using just pre-recorded tracks it not only cheapens the art it’s putting jobs and livelihoods at risk. Our musicians are heartbroken that David Byrne — a legend — is attempting this and we strongly hope he reconsiders.”

David Byrne knows where he’s going and he knows where he’s been, and the former Talking Heads band leader and near Egot winner is on his way to the Oscars again, 35 years after taking home the original score Academy Award for Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor (which he shared with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cong Su) with a song nomination for “This Is a Life” from A24’s 11x Oscar nominated Everything Everywhere All at Once which he co-wrote with the pic’s composers Son Lux and Mitski. To tell the story, the Broadway Theatre will be reconfigured from a traditional proscenium stage into a “dance club environment,” which will allow audience members to stand and move with the actors, according to the production.
The idea for the musical came out of a concept album recorded by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim and released in 2010. The show had its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Public Theater in 2013, followed by a return engagement there from 2014 to 2015, a run at London’s Royal National Theatre in 2014 and a run at Seattle Repertory Theatre in 2017.

Here Lies Love, the acclaimed “immersive disco musical” about Imelda Marcos from David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, will premiere on Broadway this summer, with Alex Timbers directing and Annie-b Parson choreographing.
Transforming the floor space of the Broadway Theatre into a dance club environment, Here Lies Love will begin previews on Saturday, June 17 ahead of an official opening night on Thursday, July 20.
Based on the rise and fall of Marcos and the People Power Revolution of the Philippines, Here Lies Love features music by Byrne and Fatboy Slim, based on a concept by Byrne, who also provides lyrics. Tom Gandey and J Pardo contribute additional music.
The result of a decade-long-plus collaboration between Byrne and Fatboy Slim, Here Lies Love began as a 2010 concept album, then made its world premiere as a stage musical Off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2013, receiving considerable critical acclaim and audience popularity. The show...

Considering that the recent elections in the Philippines ended up with Bongbong Marcos and Sara Duterte winning the presidency and vice presidency respectively, this 2003 documentary about Imelda Marcos and her rise to power on the side of Ferdinand, seems more relevant than ever. Ramona S. Diaz, who recently gave us the excellent “A Thousand Cuts”, is at the helm of another excellent film.

The documentary begins with Imelda talking to the camera, an aspect that continues throughout the movie, and actually mirrors her true character, as her tendency to hear herself talk was infamous and is actually documented in the film, by a Jesuit priest no less, who had to hear her for three hours before she got tired and put a VHS to play, of herself talking on video. At the same time, the fact that she is the center of a universe she created around herself,...

A joke went viral in the Philippines that has led locals to believe former president Ferdinand Marcos interacted with a young Michael Jordan that is being debunked by HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.
“It seems to have originated as a joke but has since been passed around completely seriously,” Oliver says while trying to keep a straight face in Sunday night’s episode.
The story claims the Marcos family was in Wilmington, Nc on December 24, 1969— when the NBA legend would’ve been around age 6—to celebrate the holidays. Marcos was walking in a local park when he came upon a skinny child begging for food so he offered him a box of bread known as Nutribun and said, “Bring this with you child, someday you will grow up to be someone important.”

Imelda Marcos, during her days as the First Lady of the Philippines, became known for her lavishness and detachment from her country’s social reality. Alex Westfall presents a 15-minute-short that tries to explain how a girl who grew up in Tacloban without a mother ended up being the “queen” of the country.
“The Rose of Manila” is screening at Nfmla Monthly Film Festival – InFocus: Asian Cinema
The film begins with an archival interview of hers that took place during 2003, where she presents herself, through Marcos’s opinion, as the mother of the nation. The movie then moves 51 years backwards, somewhere in the island of Leyte, where we are introduced to the young Imelda in a dark, almost ritualistic approach. The next sequences has her in the rather lighted environment she grew up in, showing her, in voyeuristic fashion, trying to cool herself and her pet turtle with a handheld fan,...

In Showtime’s new docuseries “Gossip” a recording of Donald Trump pretending to be his own publicist is played; a story about Tom Cruise’s front teeth falling out during a dinner with former New York Post editor-in-chief Col Allen is told; and 91-year-old Cindy Adams defends her past and present friendships with Roy Cohn, Imelda Marcos, John Gotti, Gen. Manuel Noriega and, of course, Trump.
But beyond salacious Page Six stories and Adams’ questionable friendships, “Gossip,” is at its core an examination of power and how Rupert Murdoch fundamentally shifted the foundation of the news industry via the New York Post and its tabloid journalism.
The four-part docuseries explores how New York City’s most prominent gossip columnists – Liz Smith, George Rush, Richard Johnson and Adams – built their careers and used their power.

Anyone who reads her work knows that Cindy Adams can’t be still.
In normal times, the columnist — now 91 and still publishing multiple times a week — goes out to do reporting for her column in the New York Post. The column is a strange mélange of quotes from celebrities, conservative political analysis, invective against foes real and perceived, anecdotes about the peculiarity of life in Manhattan, and aphorisms and puns. About the only consistent thing about her column day to day is the tone — choppy, clipped, and utterly direct, treating the reader as someone intimate enough with Adams that she can speak frankly, and in shorthand.
It’s fitting that “Gossip,” Showtime’s new documentary series on which Adams is the central figure, takes a similar attitude to its subjects. “Gossip” is, at once, a personal and professional biography of Adams, a look at the rise of Rupert Murdoch as a media mogul stateside,...

Natalie Mendoza, a star of the BBC One drama series Hotel Babylon and The Descent horror film franchise, has been cast in the lead role of Broadway’s Moulin Rouge! (Rudin had no involvement in Moulin Rouge!)
With the casting of Mendoza, announced today by producers Carmen Pavlovic and Bill Damaschke, the full Moulin Rouge! cast is in place for the resumption of performances on Friday, September 24, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Under the aegis of the dictatorial regime in the 1970s, the Ministry of Human Settlements introduced a shelter program that would fulfill basic housing needs. The housing project called the Bagong Lipunan (New Society) Improvement of Sites and Services (Bliss) was envisioned as a self-sustaining program that would help foster the development of its residents while serving as a model urban community. Former First Lady Imelda Marcos, who led the ministry in 1979, planned for the settlement to house 50 to 100 families in a two-and-a-half hectare area (Lico 2008). Despite the instability of the times, its offerings were promising for both low and middle-income families alike. The residents were to receive subsidies, livelihood opportunities and services, and the formation of a close-knit community was facilitated by inviting members to participate in group activities promoted by duly registered community associations. The physical dwellings were standard building types comprised of several floors, each building consisting of 16 to 32 units,...

American-made documentary “The Kingmaker” has been banned from screening to audiences in the South of Thailand.
The film, about the life of infamous political wife Imelda Marcos, was written and directed by Lauren Greenfield. It debuted at the Venice and Telluride festivals a year ago, before going on to a decent festival career with stops at the Mill Valley, London, Stockholm, El Gouna, Chicago and Hamptons events.
It has played for several weeks in specialized release in the North of Thailand and in Bangkok. But Thida Polpalitkarnpim, founder of the Documentary Club, was told by authorities that screenings in the South cannot go ahead.
The film chronicles Marcos’ extraordinary corruption, greed and brutality, and behind the scenes influence that helped her husband Ferdinand Marcos’ regime. It also tackles her desire to restore her family to past glory, notably through her son.

The Philippines, and its long tug of war between democracy and autocracy, is the subject of two timely documentaries.
In A Thousand Cuts, set for U.S. release later this summer, director Ramona Diaz examines the Philippines under President Rodrigo Duterte, who has unleashed a campaign of violence and murder on drug suspects and tightened the noose around press freedoms. Right now, every film festival shares the same ambition: Get smarter about how to connect with audiences online. In the coming weeks, Hot Docs, Human Rights Watch, and AFI Docs will present online lineups; at Doc NYC, where I’m the artistic director, we are busily adapting to new realities for our November festival.
We’ve also seen online festivals inspire pessimism from some sales agents and programmers — but we don’t have time for that kind of thinking. Many filmmakers can’t hold back their work until next year, when competition will only increase for premiere slots and buyer attention, and many festivals can’t wait because they will cease to exist without revenue. We all need to keep getting smarter, faster.
While we all want to get back into theaters, the public is swiftly adapting to watch online content non-stop. Everyone from health care workers to dancers are...

Copenhagen International Documentary Festival (Cph:dox) has sold 66,500 streams to its online festival, the organisation has revealed to Screen.
Using a modest multiplying factor of 1.7 (especially considering that families were in lockdown together), that means the festival’s online audience has numbered 113,000. The geographic split was 70% of audience in Copenhagen and 30% of audience elsewhere in Denmark.
This compares to last year’s record physical ticket sales of 114,000. Copenhagen Municipality has a population of 632,340.

Oscilloscope has swooped for U.S. rights to a feature documentary on mysterious fashion designer Martin Margiela from doc specialist Dogwoof.
The elusive Belgian designer, considered the “Banksy of fashion” because he never appears in public, is known for rising in the ranks from Jean Paul Gaultier’s assistant to creative director at Hermes and ultimately to an independent designer with a fashion house of his own.
In the film, Margiela unveils drawings, notes and personal items, providing a glimpse into his vision and career.
In addition to Oscilloscope, the Reiner Holzemer-directed “Martin Margiela: In His Own Worlds” has been sold into Non Stop (Scandinavia), Dalton (Benelux) and Hajunsa (South Korea) for theatrical and home entertainment. Previously announced sales include Uplink (Japan), Pioneer (Cis) and DDDream (China).
Elsewhere, the London-based distributor has also sold “The Queen of Versailles” director Lauren Greenfield’s feature doc “Kingmaker” into German-speaking Europe with...

Just because the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been quiet about its inner workings—a museum fund-raising announcement here, an Oscar press release there—doesn’t mean it’s been quiet inside. Every once in a while, rumblings from the Wilshire Blvd. headquarters are loud enough to be heard out here.
This week, the loudest grumbles came from within the documentary branch, where members and staff were churning around what is said to be an 11-page complaint filed by filmmaker Lauren Greenfield. According to people briefed on the complaint, it says, among other things, that prospects for her documentary feature The Kingmaker, about Imelda Marcos, were unfairly diminished by social media posts from fellow Academy members, including filmmaker Ramona Diaz, whose own Imelda won a Sundance award in 2004, and Roger Ross Williams, who recently directed The Apollo, and represents the doc branch on the Academy’s Board of Governors.
