The city of South Pasadena, Calif. has reached a settlement agreement in the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of actor Vanessa Marquez, who was shot and killed by police in her home in 2018.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Marquez’s mother, Delia McElfresh, and the city of South Pasadena agreed upon the amount of $450,000, “in order to save the parties the costs associated with protracted litigation,” South Pasadena Mayor Diana Mahmud told the Times. The majority of the cost of the settlement and litigation will come from South Pasadena’s risk pool. All of the suit’s claims — which included unlawful entry, excessive force, violation of due process and unreasonable detention — will also be dismissed with prejudice as part of the settlement.
Marquez, best known for her recurring role on the television show “ER,” was shot and killed during a wellness check after police believed she brandished a gun.

The family of “ER” actor Vanessa Marquez filed a federal suit Thursday alleging the officer-involved shooting of Marquez involved a civil rights violation.
The actor was killed in her home in 2018. Officers were called to the scene by paramedics and Marquez was having seizures when they arrived. Approximately 90 minutes into the situation, she aimed a Bb gun at the police, which ultimately resulted in the shooting, said Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza after the incident.
The suit, brought against the city of South Pasadena, Calif., the former chief of police and some officers involved, claims that police caused the confrontation by ignoring paramedics’ decision that Marquez had the right to decline transportation to a hospital.
A friend made the call for paramedics to check on Marquez, with the suit specifying that the request was only for “medical assistance,” not for an armed group of officers to respond to the call.

Each year the Academy Awards pays tribute to those actors and industryites who died during the preceding year with a heartfelt montage sequence. This year’s In Memoriam segment unspooled with John Williams’s theme from “Superman” played by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Gustavo Dudamel, over photos of actors, filmmakers and many others who died between March 2018 and February 2019. Although the montage usually features the most prominent names getting slightly longer clips at the end, this year’s segment didn’t follow that tradition.
Stanley Donen, the co-director of “Singin’ in the Rain” and director of “Two for the Road,” who died Saturday, was not included.
Those who were recognized included “Big” director Penny Marshall, “Deliverance” star Burt Reynolds and major filmmakers including Bernardo Bertolucci, Milos Forman, Nicolas Roeg, Neil Simon, Marvel legend Stan Lee and “Princess Bride” author William Goldman. Other prominent acting talents remembered in the montage were Albert Finney,...

Marquez, who played Ana in the Oscar-nominated film and had a role on early seasons of the medical drama ER, was fatally shot by a police officer in South Pasadena during a welfare check at her home on Aug. 30, 2018. Marquez was 49 when she died.
Edward James Olmos and Lou Diamond Phillips led the cast of the film, which was directed by Ramón Menéndez.
After Marquez was left out of the In Memoriam segments at the Emmy Awards in September and the SAG Awards last month, several actors from the film began petitioning the Academy to ask that she be honored with other industry insiders who passed away over the last year.

Vanessa Marquez, a series regular actress on NBC’s hit drama “ER” from 1994-1997, was shot and killed by a South Pasadena Pd officer during a welfare check early Thursday afternoon. She was 49.
During the welfare check at the 1100 Block of Fremont Avenue, Marquez was having seizures and possibly suffering from mental health issues, Lieutenant Joe Mendoza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau told TheWrap. After more than 90 minutes of officers trying to convince an uncooperative Marquez to seek care, Mendoza says the actress and South Pasadena resident pulled out a weapon and pointed it at police officers. Though it was later identified to be a Bb gun, Mendoza said it was a replica of a semi-automatic handgun, and police believed the weapon to be a real firearm.
An officer or officers shot Mendoza, who was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The only problem is that anyone with a bone to pick and not necessarily a legitimate case could come from virtually anywhere. Actor Edward James Olmos is leading a fundraising effort to help keep the real-life teacher he portrayed in 1988 film Stand & Deliver alive.
The actor and his former co-star Vanessa Marquez have learned of the plight of Los Angeles teacher Jaime Escalante, who is battling bladder cancer, and they're trying to raise $30,000 (£18,750) to pay his medical bills.
The beloved mathematics teacher, 79, has been given just months to live but Olmos is convinced that with the right care, he'll live longer.
He says, "The treatment he needs has depleted all the funds his family can raise. The family did not want to ask for help, but we took it upon ourselves to get the word out to all the country (America) and around the world to make his final days as comfortable as possible - and maybe even give him the chance to beat the cancer."
Escalante hit the headlines in the late 1960s when he encouraged inner-city kids to master calculus and turned California's Garfield High into one of America's top maths schools.
