Tony Sirico, the actor known for playing mobster Peter Paul “Paulie Walnuts” Gualtieri on “The Sopranos,” died Friday, Variety confirmed with his manager. He was 79.
Sirico’s Paulie Walnuts, a bombastic and ferociously funny foot soldier to James Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano with one-liners like no one else, was a “Sopranos” scene-stealer from the start. Sirico balanced Paulie’s menace with his deadpan humor, and his penchant for malapropisms, once calling Sun Tzu “Sun Tuh-Zoo,” later referring to the philosopher as the “Chinese Prince Matchabelli.” Sirico appeared on all six seasons of “The Sopranos,” after he initially auditioned for the role of Uncle Junior. Dominic Chianese ultimately landed that part.
Born Gennaro Anthony Sirico Jr. on July 24, 1942 to an Italian family in New York City, Sirico spent much of his early life getting into trouble with the law, and has been associated with the real-life Colombo crime family. He was...

Often dismissed for their old-fashioned ways, classic films should be applauded for those very qualities. For better—and sometimes for a lot worse—movies operate as de facto documentaries of their generation, and none more so than the string of depression-era comedies produced under the most un-comical circumstances. Those two-reelers featured bankable stars at center stage but lingering on the sidelines were the dime a dozen extras who came to California looking for work and found it in, of all places, Hollywood. Brutalized by their circumstances, these migrants would not have been out of place in a Walker Evans photograph—instead those careworn faces would be documented by the likes of Mack Sennett and Hal Roach. One of One Life To Live‘s most popular characters, Todd Manning, will be back, at least for a while. The three had been the subject of legal wrangling between Prospect Park and ABC as Prospect Park made it clear it wanted the actors back on Oltl,...

Pamela Guest on Julia RobertsIn 1985 or '86, I was hired to cast "Blood Red," an independent film starring Eric Roberts and directed by Peter Masterson, thanks to my mentor and friend Ellen Chenoweth. I had to go to New York to cast, and because Pete had connections at the Actors Studio, we held our auditions there. In Eric's contract was a clause that we had to either cast or audition his younger sister for a part in the film—I can't remember which. She'd been in New York a short time, and Eric wanted to help her get a start. The producer asked me to meet her, read her, and decide whether including her in the cast would ruin the movie. I spoke to her manager, Bob McGowan, about setting up a time, and he convinced me to just meet her that night. I agreed to a quick meet-and-greet at...

Actress Teri Polo is facing a lengthy battle with U.S. revenue chiefs - she owes hundreds of thousands in unpaid taxes.
The Meet the Parents star owes $433,736 (£290,000) in delinquent state and federal taxes, according to official records.
Authorities at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) filed a demand for $91,748 (£61,000) in her home state of Delaware last year and another $114,840 (£76,500) on 7 August, citing outstanding income taxes from 2005-2007.
And officials in California are chasing her for money as well, producing a $227,144 (£151,400) lien last year.
The star maintains she fell behind with payments after putting her career aside to raise two children and struggling through a costly divorce in 2003.
She will begin making payments in September and will recoup some of the money she owes when she earns a "couple of million" to reprise her role as Ben Stiller's wife in the upcoming 2011 Little Fockers movie, the third in the comedy series, according to her manager Bob McGowan.
He says, "The bottom line is she does owe the money. But she does have a deal with the IRS and the state of California."...
