Standing in the basement of the Harrah’s Cherokee Center in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, Billy F. Gibbons is recalling the moment he received his first guitar. He was only 13.
“It was Christmas Day,” the 73-year-old Zz Top frontman tells Rolling Stone. “[All these years later], there’s so many different ways to remain creative and the expressiveness seems to remain as a challenge — it’s exciting.”

Throughout his television career, Nathan Fielder has built two separate but overlapping images of himself. The first, his on-screen persona, is that of a stone-faced comedian who constantly places himself and others in uncomfortable situations, flubbing something as basic as a high-five or a polite joke, sometimes chastising a subject over a minor misstep. The second, as a philosopher of modern life, is that of a reality TV genius who uses the medium to comment on the nature of media consumption, what it means to “represent reality” in such shows, and the ethics of putting real people and their troubles in front of an audience.
The experimental HBO series The Rehearsal provided plenty of fuel for debates about whether or not Fielder was exploiting his subjects, regardless of their TV-ready antics and their signing release forms. Of course, such debates were at the heart of the series itself, as Fielder...

Plot: A genre-bending drama series that explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring on their new HGTV show.
Review: As I write this review, I am still unsure how to process The Curse. I am a fan of everyone involved in this project, including A24 and their continuous streak of financing the strangest projects that no one else would produce. Based on the trailer, I expected The Curse to be a satire of reality DIY shows that have grown in popularity over the last twenty years. I also expected the series to blend Nathan Fielder’s signature deadpan, semi-documentary projects like Nathan For You and How To with John Wilson. Instead, The Curse is a surreal and bizarre show that defies categorization and combines elements of multiple genres, including psychological horror, to generate a narrative that defies categorization.

The Last Waltz Tour, a live celebration of The Band’s 1976 farewell concert, will return to the road this fall. The all-star tour first debuted in 2017 with Warren Haynes, Don Was, and Jamey Johnson atop the bill. All three of those artists return this time to re-create key moments from The Band’s San Francisco concert, which was filmed for Martin Scorsese’s 1978 movie — a.k.a. the greatest concert film of all time.

One day in the late Nineties, Dave Lombardo, the metal drumming powerhouse best known for bringing a tornado-like fury to Slayer’s early thrash masterpieces, was driving from San Francisco to his home in Los Angeles. On the way, he threw on a recording of an unusual gig he’d just taken part in: a performance of a so-called game piece by John Zorn, in which the category-defying composer assembled a group of improvisers and staged a spontaneous sonic happening according to a series of rules, cards, and gestures.

Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe and dub pioneer Lee “Scratch” Perry have joined forces for “Lions,” a new single they contributed to art collective/supergroup Saudade.
The track opens with a peaceful interlude of Perry speaking, as Blythe takes over on vocals. “Honey dripping through the ceiling/On the shifting blue below,” he sings. “Their beauty stings in floating dreams/That let the poison flow.” He uses his heavy-metal vocals to scream through the chorus: “We’ve been pushed to this/We kill with a kiss.”

Attendees of the 39th annual Montreal International Jazz Festival likely all had a familiar refrain in mind: the heat is on. The fest, which runs June 28 to July 7, faced summer temperatures well into the 90s this week, but jazz fanatics, party people, families and tourists alike are braving the weather to enjoy a wide range of musical entertainment and outdoor spectacles.
High profile performers like Ry Cooder, Seal, Snarky Puppy and saxophone sensation Kamasi Washington brought their big stage shows to appreciative audiences, along with veteran jazz stalwarts like Archie Shepp and guitarist Al Di Meola. Performing American rockers like George Thorogood, Ben Harper and the jam-friendly Bela Fleck and the Flecktones were all honored with great hospitality and presented with official festival awards.
Singer/guitarist Ry Cooder appeared at the Théâtre Maisonneuve on Friday night, showcasing his unique spin on American roots music and playing the blues with style and grace.

New York’s Hudson River valley has a long history as a haven for artists either fleeing the exhausting grind of New York City or seeking to the area’s natural beauty. It’s where Bob Dylan retreated for an extended retreat following his (possibly exaggerated) motorcycle crash in 1966, it’s where Van Morrison conceived of Moondance, and it’s currently home to — among others — jazz musicians Jack DeJohnette (drums), John Scofield (guitar), John Medeski (keyboards, of Medeski, Martin and Wood) and Larry Grenadier (bass), who formed the newly-organized collective Hudson. People is pleased to premiere their version of Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay,...

Okay, it's time for me to stop trying to listen to more 2016 albums and just wrap up this list. In the past I would split my jazz list into a new releases part dedicated to current recordings and a historical part combining first releases of archival material with reissues. This year I'm skipping reissues, partly because some projects were so gargantuan that little guys like me weren't serviced with them, partly because the vinyl renaissance means everything is being reissued at once, and partly because so much stuff is just rehashing the same material in new packaging, with or without a gimmick or a little additional material added. So first releases of archival material are lumped in here. Maybe that's not entirely fair to the current guys, but on the other hand I don't include many archival items on my list.

Another year, another move further away from caring about pop. Whether that's pop's fault or mine, I'm not sure. But there was still plenty of great new music released in 2015, and here, according to my idiosyncratic tastes, are the best albums, or at least my favorites.
1. Wire: Wire (Pink Flag)
This is said to be the first time that Bruce Gilbert's replacement, guitarist Matthew Simms, was heavily involved in the creation of a Wire album, and the result is...the closest Wire has ever come to sounding like a Colin Newman album. I exaggerate for effect, but only slightly: most everything thrums along smoothly and motorik-ly, he takes all the lead vocals (though Graham Lewis supposedly wrote many of the lyrics), and there are none of the post-punkier outbursts of the group's previous two reunion albums, though near the end of Wire, the one-two punch of "Split Your Ends" and "Octopus" come close.

My alienation from current pop is almost complete; the only 2013 Top 40 material I enjoyed enough to play repeatedly was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, from an album released in 2012. So I am officially a cranky old fart. But there are more and more of us, and maybe fellow COFs will find this list useful. By the way, crossing that border of alienation made me think more than ever that saying my lists are of the "best" albums is nearly absurd, hence the new headline.
1. Wire: Change Becomes Us (Pink Flag)
This is my favorite Wire of this century thanks to more emphasis on Colin Newman's brooding. When allied to their chugging motorik beats, it's irresistible to me. There are still some uptempo burners that recall their beginnings in punk, and some more whimsical though still musically solid songs, but it's Newman's dark musings that made me play this repeatedly.

Chicago – I can still remember when I first heard the band Morphine. It was the title track from their stellar 1993 album, “Cure For Pain,” which also serves as the title for a strong new rock doc about this underrated and underappreciated trio that’s now playing On Demand. The movie has some rough edges in terms of production and its subject’s notorious privacy makes him a difficult centerpiece but if the greatest accomplishment of “Cure For Pain: The Mark Sandman Story” is merely that it reminds viewers of the pure genius of Morphine then it’s done some good.
A two-string bass, a baritone saxophone, and a drum set. That shouldn’t be a band. But with the amazing songwriting of Mark Sandman, it became a very successful one under the name Morphine. 1992’s “Good” was a strong debut but it was 1993’s “Cure For Pain” that really...

Think of Sonic Youth. When most, and I imagine you’re no different, think of Sonic Youth they think of noise rock’s power couple. Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, would be the most often name checked and revered persons that come to mind, indie icons as they are. Sonic Youth’s own Lennon and McCartney, with more sexual tension. Actually, sexual release and fulfilment I’d speculate given that they got married and had a daughter. Which is a darn sight more than Lennon and McCartney managed with their working relationship. If only though.
Anyhow, yes, it’s alternative’s own Mr and Mrs Right (though now in line for a divorce, as any review of this album seems adverse to not mentioning or anything in relation to Sonic Youth, I’m no different it seems, whatever) or Lennon/McCartney that come to mind when musing on Sonic Youth,...

The jazz-funk trio, Medeski Martin & Wood have been together for over 20 years. To celebrate the career milestone, the group — made up of John Medeski on keyboards, Billy Martin on drums and Chris Wood on bass — has decided this would be a good year to work harder than ever.

Photograph courtesy of Gatling Pictures.Featuring interviews with Ben Harper, John Medeski, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Mike Watt (The Stooges), Les Claypool (Primus), and Seth Mnookin (a Vanity Fair contributor), Cure for Pain: The Mark Sandman Story tracks the life and career of Morphine front man Mark Sandman. Morphine, whose members achieved the status of cult heroes during the band’s 10 years of existence, formed in Boston in 1989. Known for their distinctly woozy sound, classified by critics as “low rock” (but described by Sandman as “fuck rock”), the group abandoned traditional rock instrumentation in favor of slide bass, multiple saxophones, and drums. The music stopped, however, when Sandman died of a heart attack onstage during a show in Italy in 1999. His last words were: “Thanks, Palestrina. It’s a beautiful night. It’s great to be here and I want to dedicate a super-sexy song to all of you.

Previously known as Sandman: At Your Service, the upcoming documentary about the life of iconic bassist Mark Sandman and his trio Morphine is finally complete and priming itself for a run on the festival circuit. And with things now wrapped up the film has been rechristened as Cure For Pain: The Mark Sandman Story - a far superior title, I think you'll agree - and released a new trailer.
Cure For Pain examines the life and work of Mark Sandman, deceased frontman of Boston "low rock" band Morphine. From his Newton, Mass., roots to his travels across America and around the globe, Sandman left an indelible imprint as one of the most distinctive musicians of his generation. Along with revisiting the "unique and sultry sound" of his music, Cure For Pain explores the meaning of family through this critically praised and personally conflicted singer, songwriter and innovative instrumentalist.

Synopsis
For Ron Hogan, life is fine… not great, not good, just… fine, and on the verge of retiring any sort of dream he’s harbored of a life less ordinary. Pushing thirty and working a thankless office job, internet dating is one more routine in Ron Hogan’s well-ordered life. God knows his lonely roommate and lonelier co-workers have tried, but not even a dart to the back of the head can shake him out of his funk. Until he meets Stacy, a fellow working stiff who disarms him by speaking the language of his loneliest moments. Featuring a score by acclaimed jazz composer John Medeski, Audrey the Trainwreck is Frank V. Ross’s 5th feature film, an exploration of what might happen if one manÕs silent desperation got a little bit louder.

SXSW 2010 – Day Four
Hurry up and wait … for MacGruber starring Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer and Ryan Phillippe.
Today was the random one you get at every festival. You just don’t know what you’re going to see. Some early screenings on Friday suddenly left me with only one thought – get MacGruber.
Complete Coverage of SXSW 2010
I went to the Fast Pass express lane at 8:45 a.m. to wait in line, so I could then wait in a shorter line. It opened at 10 and I was able to get my pass no problem.
Then it was off to see Audrey the Trainwreck.

During the week or so leading up to the start of SXSW 2010, I.ll be providing a glimpse into some of the films I am looking forward to at the festival. SXSW will feature many great films, many more than I can cover, ranging from narrative fiction to documentary, comedy to horror, foreign to animation, independent to studio films.
