Deer Tick have announced their new album, Emotional Contracts, out June 16th as their debut on Ato Records. They’ve also expanded their 2023 tour (grab tickets here) and shared the lead single, “Forgiving Ties,” alongside album track “The Real Thing.”
Emotional Contracts was produced by Dave Fridmann, who is best known for his work with The Flaming Lips, Spoon, and Sleater-Kinney. The 10-track LP includes a feature from Steve Berlin of Los Lobos and background vocals from Courtney Marie Andrews, Vanessa Carlton, Kam Franklin, Angela Miller, and Sheree Smith.
In a statement, vocalist/guitarist John McCauley described letting loose during the recording process. “This time we wanted to see what it would feel like to let go a bit,” he said. “We figured that the songs were strong enough to stand on their own two feet, so whatever we put them through would just make them stronger and take us in some new direction.

Tennessee-based band Cordovas have announced plans for their new album Destiny Hotel, which follows the group’s 2018 Ato Records debut, That Santa Fe Channel. Set for release via Ato on October 16th, the album’s easygoing lead single “High Feeling” is out now.
Infused with the same sun-kissed energy that powers the Allman Brothers Band’s “Blue Sky,” “High Feeling” is as unhurried and amiable as it gets, featuring perky splashes of piano and bright Hammond B3 organ. “You give me that high kind of feeling/I don’t want to come down,...

Angie blew the judges away on the April 24 episode of ‘American Idol.’ Now she reveals that her confidence is through the roof and that the finale is her destiny! Read on to see what she says!
Angie Miller may have seemed a little bashful at the beginning of this season of American Idol, but now she’s totally confident and believes that the Idol title is hers to lose.
Angie Miller: ‘I’m Here To Be In The Finale’
“I’m really proud of myself,” Angie said after the Idol Top 4 performances on April 24. “I feel like I was able to show the judges that I’ve learned and I’ve grown,” she said. “I’m here to be in the finale.”
Angie has plenty reason to be so self-assured. Her piano performance of Jessie J’s “Who You Are” earned a standing ovation from all of the judges.

Tennessee native Janelle Arthur may be the latest American Idol (TV) contestant to be eliminated, but she's far from over. The 23-year-old country girl has struck a chord with fans and fellow artists alike, all of whom grew to love her more each week on Fox's hit show. Finishing in a respectable fifth place, Janelle now looks ahead to her future; one that promises to be bright. The producers-that-be are already buzzing about her in Nashville, and with a solid endorsement from all four Idol judges, the girl has good reason to be optimistic. Janelle sat down with journalists following her departure last week in order to answer some questions about her Idol experience. In this revealing new interview, the singer talks about her friendship with fellow contestants, her desire to revive "old country" and the gracious support she received from her own idol, Dolly Parton. Here's what she had to say.

How do you solve a problem like Lazaro (pictured, right)? The ice cream scooper with an extreme stutter, 21, really just doesn’t know any of the words to any of the songs! Somehow he got through Stevie Wonder’s “Once in My Life” with no tears-inducing hiccups for his tepid Motown Week solo (full recap here) — perhaps he’d heard it before, or listened to it thousands of times over the weekend. But his subsequent trio with Burnell Taylor (left) and Devin Velez on “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)” was a complete disaster. Lazaro looked like...

There've been complaints that last night's American Idol, themed around the hits and performances of past Idol winners, was old-fashioned and schmaltzy. Hey, morons: That's why I watchAmerican Idol. I want ancient, Wayne Newton-y performances from Mormon teenagers in pain. I want the new Rosemary Clooney to woo me in a collared denim dress that her great-grandmother weaved. I want singers who pick songs by Kenny Rogers or Alannah Myles to feel "naughty." Bring me the home-schooled!
I loved last night's episode, even when truly awful songs like Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" threatened to curbstomp us with hopelessness. For me, ranking the top 10 was a cinch -- though apparently I disagree with most of you about how interesting Angela Miller is. Guys, her emotions range from "happy" to "happy, but quiet sometimes." Come on.
One last note before I write another 200 words about Lazaro Arbos that amount to "Good try,...

When fans of American Idol found out that three new judges were joining Randy Jackson for season 12, there was all sorts of speculation that Mimi would be diva-licious, Keith Urban would provide legitimacy and Nicki Minaj would just…be there.
As it turns out, Nicki Minaj is probably the breakout star (along with Angela Miller, Candice Glover and Kree Harrison) of American Idol this year. We’ve compiled our top ten favorite reasons why we love to watch Nicki Minaj hold court on American Idol.

Recent episodes of American Idol have featured countless “rawwwwwr talent”s from a lovesick Keith Urban, brutally honest missives from Señora Ladybug Nicki Minaj, surprisingly zesty complete sentences from Randy Jackson, and unbridled self-centered rambling from Mariah Carey. Whose specialty do You value most? Vote below….

The competition is getting more and more fierce with each week that passes, and last night (March 7) “American Idol” feted their Season 12 Top 10 contestants at The Grove.
Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, and Randy Jackson all showed up at the West Hollywood shindig and posed for fans and press before heading inside.
Meanwhile, the hottest five male vocalists this time around include Lazaro Arbos, Curtis Finch Jr, Paul Jolley, Burnell Taylor, and Devin Velez.
As for the ladies, Janelle Arthur, Candice Glover, Kree Harrison, Amber Holcomb, and Angela Miller are all hoping to become the next American Idol.
Of the remaining contestants, Randy Jackson told press that fans of the show made the right call. “I think America definitely did [select the best singers].” Urban added, “I feel really good about the top ten. Well, that was the weirdest possible way to introduce season 12's finalists to America, wouldn't you say? To recap, Ryan Seacrest sat the 20 remaining hopefuls in what looked like a cramped classroom (very Up the Down Staircase) and led each surviving finalist through a long corridor and to the stage for a victory performance. In case that wasn't bizarre enough, Ryan sometimes gave the performers little pep talks before they hit the stage. And we all know what a sympathetic character Seacrest is.
"You did it. All the hard work paid off," Seacrest muttered to Candice Glover like a scripted high-school guidance counselor. So, so weird.
Here's what's important. The ten finalists (chosen by home viewer votes) were announced, and now it's our job to rank them in two ways: 1) by merit, based solely on who deserves to be the next American Idol most; 2) by likeliness to win, based solely...

How do you take the task of announcing the names of American Idol‘s Season 12 finalists and stretch it out over a 90-minute telecast? Well, you can start with a super-awkward framework for the episode that requires Ryan Seacrest to dash back and forth from the stage to a tiny holding room, retrieving finalists one at a time and leaving the unfortunate castoffs to stew in their own anxiety and terror.
The good news, however, is that Nigel Lythgoe & Co. introduced the idea of a victory song for each singer before he or she decamped to the Idol Couches of Safety (Tm). Okay,...

It's time to whittle down the Top 20 men and women to the Top 10 finalists on "American Idol." If we had our say, it would be Angela Miller, Candice Glover, Kree Harrison, Amber Holcomb, Janelle Arthur, Elijah Liu, Curtis Finch Jr., Nick Boddington, Devin Velez and Burnell Taylor.
If we didn't have to have even gender picks, we would substitute in Aubrey Cleland and Breanna Steer for Elijah and Devin.
After a lot of filler and a commercial and a video recap of last night, we finally get to some results. The first person into the Top 10 is Paul Jolley. Huh. Did not expect that. Oh, this is why the show is 90 minutes -- each person is performing. Oh, dear. Let's just say his "Alone" is ... he's no Carrie Underwood.
The next guy to advance is Burnell Taylor, which is correct. Well done, American public. His "Ready for Love" is nice,...

Ten more dames. Ten more billiards lounge renditions of songs that your great-grandmother can safely die to. And about four or five that ruled. Let's rank 'em!
10. Zoanette Johnson, Tina Tuner's "What's Love Got to Do With It?"
Well, here's the good news: Now Lil Rounds can claim her rendition of "What's Love Got to Do With It?" from season eight isn't the single worst version in Idol history. Zoanette is truly a mesmerizing, popcorn-worthy spectacle deserving of P.T. Barnum's time, but you knew she'd fall apart the minute actual singing was required of her. Mariah can claim that her take on "The Circle of Life" worked because of "her backstory" (uh, in Liberia? That's why Zoanette's a natural at crooning about lion birth?), but it was really thanks to the instrumentation's campy grandeur, which tonally matched Zoanette's Wendy Williams-meets-Pagliacci hissy-fit theater. For the entire last month, the judges had their say about the remaining top 20 contestants left standing in the Cirque de Soleil theater in Las Vegas. Nicki got a little frisky on the March 5 episode of ‘American Idol,’ calling one contestant her wife and telling another she was a fan of her boobs!
American Idol has hit the live show phase, so it’s up to You to vote your favorites through! Just 5 of the 10 remaining girls will make it through to the next round after fighting for a spot in the final. Judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson can only watch and listen — it’s not up to them anymore!

Zoanette Johnson — Keith said, “I do love the way you perform.” Nicki said, “You know I love you and I always tell you the truth…that wasn’t it.” Randy agreed, saying, “that was a mess.”
Breanna Steer – Keith said she has “tremendous control.” Nicki said she picked the wrong song and it sounded like she was straining.

It's time for the "American Idol" Top 10 women (and men tomorrow night). We say it most years, but we'll say it again -- it's a real shame that the Top 10 finalists have to be five from each gender, because this year, we can think of at least six women who should advance and there might even be more depending on how tonight goes.
1. Zoanette Johnson, "What's Love Got to Do With It," Tina Turner
Thank goodness she is performing first, let's get this ridiculousness out of the way right at the start. And then she starts and it turns out she has no idea what the words are. If you vote for her, you are dead to me, readers. Moving on.

Angela Miller - Top 10 Girls - American Idol 12 by IdolxMuzic
Angela Miller got back behind the piano on "American Idol" Tuesday night (March 5), taking on "Never Gone" by last year's "Idol" finalist Colton Dixon. We aren't sure it was her best song choice, but she sang the heck out of it -- and the judges definitely agreed.
"That was beautiful. When you play the piano, that's when I hear you the clearest and truest," says Keith Urban. Nicki Minaj adds, "The trumpets should sound when you walk in the room, little girl ... can I just get your album?"
Randy says it was like he was at her show, while Mariah praised her song choice. We definitely found her to be one of the best of the night. Do you expect Angela to advance, "Idol" fans? Does she have your vote?...
Angela Miller got back behind the piano on "American Idol" Tuesday night (March 5), taking on "Never Gone" by last year's "Idol" finalist Colton Dixon. We aren't sure it was her best song choice, but she sang the heck out of it -- and the judges definitely agreed.

I was with Nicki Minaj all the way last night – there was no one else in Burnell’s ‘lane’ on the Feb. 28th episode of ‘American Idol.’ And that lane should lead right to the final.
Burnell Taylor – you were magical on American Idol Feb. 25th as you impressively sang your way into the Final 20.
When you started your version of John Legend‘s “This Time,” it was as if time stood still – you were mesmerizing.
The heartfelt tune could be your own personal anthem – that’s the way you sang it.
You fully embraced it’s poignant message, making it clear through your voice and your gestures , how much it resonated for you personally.
“This time I want it all, this time I want it all… this time I’ll take the chance, this time I’ll be your man, I can be all you need,” you sang.

It's the final night of Sudden Death on American Idol. The guys in the competition so far haven't been spectacular. The remaining 10 will sing for the judges and then the judges, perhaps with the help of our pal Jimmy Iovine, will send half of them home.
Five will be left standing (because really, those stools are uncomfortable) and they'll join last week's winners in rounding out the top of this season's male contestants.
By the end of tonight, we'll have this season's Top 20 American Idol contestants and America will begin voting. Let's get to it...
Mathenee Treco, originally from Jamaica, is a choreographer. He knew he wanted to be a performer in middle school. Tonight he takes on The King singing Elvis' "A Little Less Conversation." He jerked around like he was rapping, but he was singing a crazy arrangement of the song and it was bizarre. Keith advised him...

I hated the way "American Idol" handled Hollywood Week this year, with the pointless gender splitting and subsequent elongation of an already dull slog. But I've liked the Sudden Death approach to the Top 40. Let America actually see some full performances before they get to vote. Yes, it allows the judges to put an additional early imprint on contestants who are favorites due to talent -- Angela Miller, Curtis Finch Jr. etc -- and also contestants who are favorites due to narrative or personality -- Charlie Askew, Zoanette Johnson, etc. But I think it may make the electorate a bit...

Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban all made a mistake by putting Zoanette Johnson through to the top 20 on ‘American Idol.’ Find out why I think she should have been eliminated on Feb. 27.
Zoanette Johnson was named as one of the Top 20 contestants on season 12 of American Idol on Feb. 27. After a rousing rendition of Elton John’s ”Circle Of Life,” which brought Nicki Minaj to tears, Zoanette was pushed through to the next round of the compeition. Sadly, other season favorites went home in her place.
I’d like to describe Zoanette’s performance as both crazy and awful. Sure, she has a decent voice, but her flamboy-ish antics should not be what drives her in a singing competition.
Let’s not forget that Jennifer Hudson slayed the same song during season 3, and her performance puts Zoanette’s to shame. In fact, if you re-watch Jennifer’s performance,...

Ten more girls faced sudden-death elimination in Las Vegas last night as American Idol culled its top 40 down to a lean 20.
The first half of the night was filled with solid if not particularly memorable performances by talented singers with bright futures ahead of them. Randy Jackson described the evening's performances as a "mixed bag" verging on "sleepy" while resident optimist Keith Urban applauded the evening's "diversity." Perhaps the biggest surprise was the elimination of Cristabel Clack. The happily married worship leader belted out Alicia Keys' "No One" so...

It's time for the second half of the "American Idol" Top 20 women. Last week, there were a handful of killer performances -- can this week live up?
Once again, we've previously seen about half of the women performing. It's a good thing the public isn't voting yet, half of them wouldn't stand a chance.
1. Melinda Ademi, "Nobody's Perfect," Jessie J
This is the same song Angela Miller did last week, but it's barely recognizable this go-round. The verse is way too low, her voice is inaudible in parts and muddy when you can hear it. Not a great key for her. The chorus gets better, but this still isn't showing off her voice at all and it's all very lackluster.
Keith Urban is strangely complimentary. We found that to be a pretty big dud. Nicki points out how it's hard not to compare her to Angela from last week, which is true.

How else to explain Zoanette Johnson being named by the show’s rebooted judges’ panel as one of the 10 most promising unsigned female singers in the country? Yes, Zoanette Johnson, the same chick whose tattered, Season 12 audition cover of “The Star Spangled Banner” caused Keith Urban to literally fall out of his chair — and was punctuated by an alarming booty drop.

Country superstar Keith Urban is a busy man these days, and he wouldn't have it any other way. Between his concert tours, numerous public appearances, the judging gig on American Idol (TV), and playing dad to two daughters with wife Nicole Kidman, one has to wonder how he juggles it all. The answer? Good balance. His impact as a new judge on American Idol (TV) has been a positive one. Each week, the four-time Grammy winner provides insightful, knowledgeable, and empathetic feedback for Idol contestants who strive for vocal perfection in order to advance into the final Top Ten. His smooth, calm nature is sometimes in stark contrast to his female counterparts, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, who have been known at times to engage in a competition of their own. To his credit, Keith has navigated these unchartered waters skillfully, dodging the effects of Cat Scratch Fever and stabilizing the panel.

"I don't know where I am right now ... I don't know what's going on," bemoaned "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson on Thursday's show. For once, I agreed with R-dawg.The "sudden death" round -- meant to cut 10 semi-finalists to 5 -- was one of the oddest nights of television in recent history. Among the "guys" performing included a cross-dresser and a man-child. On top of it all, the best *performance* (note, I didn't say vocal) of the night didn't even make it through.Check it out below and the five contestants that did advance.Did not advance. JDAThe flamboyant luxurious French cosmetics salesperson delivered the most memorable audition of the night. God, I love this part of American Idol. I love spending two hours on a weeknight exalting young chanteuses like mall-brand Aphrodites and sentencing losers to an eternity in Jimmy Iovine's jean-jacket dungeon. That's quality time with the TV for me.
We saw ten ladies trill for the attention of the increasingly articulate judges on Wednesday, and five of them were booted before the night was over. So satisfying! Take your Charlotte Russe stylings and head back to Branson, losers. You can pick up that extra shift at Dave & Buster's after all.
Now, some general advice for the competing ten women we saw on Wednesday: Matter more. I'm blown away by anybody who seeks a career in entertainment and expects to be applauded for sheer technical skill. You also need to be special, and being special has to matter to you. Have you heard of Madonna? She mattered (and...

There’s no reason to choose any other contestants for the top 20, we already have our winner — Angela Miller! Find out why I think she’ll win this season of ‘American Idol.’
I’m willing to make a Simon Cowell-type prediction and name Angela Miller as the winner of American Idol season 12. Sure, we’re not even down to the top 20 yet, but on the Feb. 20 episode, this girl proved that she’s flawless!
Angela followed up her amazing solo performance during Hollywood week with a rendition of Jessie J’s “Nobody’s Perfect.” Not only did she sing the song with perfection, but she used the stage like a veteran, and wore a sexy black front-button romper — she looked just like Taylor Swift!

5 girls have been cut as contestants were challenged to a sudden death round where they had to sing for survival in front of the judges and a live studio audience in Las Vegas!

Angela Miller - Vegas Singoff - American Ido 12 by IdolxMuzic
Angela Miller really blew everyone away during "American Idol" Hollywood Week with her original song "You Set Me Free." Could she live up to that performance during the Top 20?
The answer is -- almost. Her rendition of Jessie J's "Nobody's Perfect" was very strong and she definitely deserved to advance, but it wasn't quite as stirring as her own piece from last week.
Nicki Minaj gave her some great advice when she said, "Don't overdo it. You're already a top contender in this competition. Don't force anything." Keith Urban praised her talent, "You have a big, big gift that doesn't require any compensating."
What did you think, "Idol" fans?...

Kentucky high school junior Jenny Beth Willis, whose rendition of a Trisha Yearwood song earned mixed reviews from the judges, was the first up. Although Keith Urban appreciated her "effortless confidence," Nicki Minaj said her performance...

American Idol threw yet another new twist at its 40 remaining contestants: a sudden-death round. So, this is new for "American Idol" -- live audience shows, but America doesn't vote. Ten ladies are performing and five have to go home, then next week 10 more perform and five more go home. It's the same for the guys, leaving us with 10 women and 10 men by the end of next week.
Ryan introduces the 20 women and it's fairly obvious the ones we're supposed to know and like already, because about half of them are complete unknowns. But since we aren't voting yet, we suppose it doesn't matter.
1. Jenny Beth Willis, "Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love," Trisha Yearwood
So, Jenny Beth is dressed like a can-can dancer goes Grand Ol' Opry, it's a little terrifying. Vocally, she has a nice tone, but this song is getting away from her a little bit -- she's missing notes and is flat at times, plus she seems a little stiff.

In an attempt to freshen things up this season, American Idol has introduced a series of changes to its format. But how original are these changes?
First there were the nominations, where Randy Jackson hand delivered invitations to Idol hopefuls. Kind of like The Voice. Then they separated the boys and girls for Hollywood Week and pre-arranged the groups.
Tonight, Idol takes a page from The X Factor's audition process with its first-ever Sudden Death Semifinals.
The first 10 semifinalist girls will sing in front of the judges and a live studio audience. At the end of the night, only half of them will remain standing. Who will make the cut? Let's find out now...
In the sudden death round, contestants can choose any song they want to sing from any genre. In the event that the judges are split on whether contestants should stay or go, Jimmy Iovine will be the tie-breaker.

A few of the details might’ve varied, but tonight’s installment of American Idol was, at its coal-black, mercenary heart, a less dusty reenactment of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.
Oh, sure, Ryan Seacrest went with his standard, “This…is American Idol!” intro (as opposed to the more ominous “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, dyin’ time’s here“). And no, there weren’t any feral, bloodthirsty ragamuffins in the front row (just some smiling or occasional booing family members of the contestants). But there was indeed a chiseled Australian dude (sporting better highlights, a more exacting ear, and a...

"American Idol" is about to start its Las Vegas rounds, whittling the Top 40 down to the Top 20 over the next two weeks. Judge Keith Urban says it's too soon to name any frontrunners, but that the audience is really responding to some contestants.
"I still think it's too soon to tell [who the frontrunners are], only because it's extraordinary what can happen from week to week, positive and minus," says Urban. "I've watched people emerge unexpectedly ... it can go the other way too, where they sing and we're like, 'Hmm, didn't quite get there tonight.' It's far too soon to get any sort of frontrunner ideas."
"But I will say," he adds. "Certainly the audience reaction last night to Angela Miller and a couple other girls was pretty obvious."
Speaking of Angela Miller, she really blew the doors off Hollywood Week with her original piece "You Set Me Free." Urban praises her gumption to choose an original song.

American Idol wants a female winner for Season 12 — or at least that was the loud and clear message of Ryan Seacrest’s voiceovers during the ladies-only portion of Hollywood Week. Still, with the pimping of Angela Miller, Candice Glover and Janelle Arthur starting so early in the season, could the strategy backfire and give rise to another dudely successor to Phillip Phillips, Scotty McCreery and Lee DeWyze?
On this week’s Idology, my cohost Melinda Doolittle and I discuss this conundrum for executive producer Nigel Lythgoe and his cohorts, while also dissecting some peculiar behavior by the Season 12 judges during the women’s group rounds.

Are we locked in? Ready? American Idol's twelfth season is about to launch into its most awesome (and stressful, if you're me) section -- the Top 40 shakedown and the mega blitz of eliminations that we, the mean home viewers, get to decide. It's do or die for your weird personal favorites: That chick with the dreadlocks and beads who sings Donny Hathaway? She might be deported back to Birkenstock Island. That closeted homosexual with the Manilow confidence? Randy Jackson might decapitate him. Ahhh! Gay carnage.
Now that the winning 40 guys and girls of Season 12 have been announced, let's take a look back at the auditions we liked most. I've ranked them because I'm compulsive about this sort of thing.

Yes, yes, I hear you -- shut up, Louis, about your affection for the effete Southern balladeer who refuses to sing anything but pathetic country music of the 21st century.

It was the final day of Hollywood Week and there were 47 women angling for a spot in the top 20. In order to move from Hollywood to Las Vegas, the women had to sing for their lives (or at least for that part of their lives they wanted to spend on reality television). Contestants were given the choice of singing a song from a list of Idol-approved numbers or performing a royalty-free original song. Opting for the latter was 18-year-old Angela Miller, who easily earned herself a spot in the...

The "American Idol" producers Really want a girl to win this season, telling viewers over and over that Season 12 has the best female contestants ever. And they may have found her in Angela Miller. The 18-year-old wowed Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban with her original song during the solo round. She tops our list of the cant-miss performances from Hollywood Week.1. Angela MillerThe judges have all but anointed Angela as "The One," which they called Season 10's runner-up Lauren Alaina. Angela is even more poised than Lauren, writes her own song and plays the piano. If anyone can go all the way, it's her. This is one of the best Hollywood Week performances in the show's history. A star is born:2. Candice Glover and Janelle ArthurTwo other contestants that have been getting the big push are soulful Candice and country songbird Janelle. Both auditioned before,...

The ladies had one last chance to shine before American Idol made its most brutal cut yet. And a fair number of them fully took advantage! Keith Urban was practically in tears watching Angela Miller belt out an original song called "You Set Me Free"—and he was first to give her a standing ovation. "Wow! If that was recorded right there, I would play that in my car. That's just a beautiful song," he raved. So, in the course of a minute, Angela went from meh to wow. Who else followed suit? Candice Glover, Janelle Arthur, Shubha Vedula, Juliana Chahayed and the jazzier-than-ever Zoanette Johnson, who accompanied herself on the drums, were among the...
