Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy is one of those beloved book franchises that should have gotten a TV series adaptation at least five years ago. Set in a world in which two distinct races of vampires—the Moroi and the Strigoi—exist, the six-book series centers the best friendship between Moroi princess Lissa and half-vampire bodyguard Rose.
While the series was made into a pretty good movie starring Zoey Deutch back in 2014, it was one of those adaptations that, while fun, didn’t actually do a good job adapting its source material. Now that Peacock has announced a series adaptation from Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec and promising “the elegance of aristocratic romance” combined with “the supernatural thrills of the vampire genre,” the Vampire Academy fanbase might finally get the adaptation they’ve long been asking for. Today, we got our first insight into what the Peacock series will actually look like,...

Julie Plec's latest project about the undead has set its cast.
The series is described as "a story of romance, friendship, death, sex, and scandal."
Vampire Academy is based on a series of young adult paranormal romance novels by international bestselling author Richelle Mead.
In a world of privilege and glamour, two young women’s friendship transcends their strikingly different classes as they prepare to complete their education and enter royal vampire society.
This serialized and sexy drama combines the elegance of aristocratic romance and the supernatural thrills of the vampire genre.
"St. Vladmir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school — it’s a hidden place where vampire royals are educated and half-human teens train to protect them from the savage ‘Strigoi’ vampires who would like to see them destroyed," reads the logline.

Shipping fictional characters is nothing new, but now the latest wave of relationship obsession appears to be the pairing of Star Wars‘ Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. Followers of ‘Skysolo’ are adamant that the saga’s original pair of cute dumb guys were completely into each other, and that’s now been confirmed. Sort of.
The ship has been sailing for quite some time, but was ignited in an explosion of notoriety after a tweet by a Twitter user with the unambiguous name of ‘Kayla, leader of the skysolo revolution’ went viral. In it, a Tumblr screencap quotes Mark Hamill, in which he states that during the scene after Luke’s rescue from Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back, Harrison Ford improvised a kiss instead of delivering his scripted line.
Just found out Harrison ford kissed mark hamill in one of the deleted scenes they really screamed skysolo rights! pic.

Vivien Leigh would’ve celebrated her 105th birthday on November 5, 2018. The two-time Oscar inner made only a handful of films before her untimely death in 1967 at the age of 53. Yet several of those titles remain classics. In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 10 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in British India, Leigh appeared in a number of roles on both the stage and screen in England, including a production of “Hamlet” opposite her husband, Laurence Olivier.
She came to international attention after landing the coveted role of Scarlet O’Hara in David O. Selznick’s massive adaptation of Margaret Mitchell‘s bestseller “Gone with the Wind” (1939). Leigh was far from the first choice to embody the headstrong Southern belle who pines after a married man (Leslie Howard) while wedding another (Clark Gable) against the backdrop of the Civil War. In a sense, Arabesque (1966) is a sort of warmed-over rehash of Donen's earlier Charade (1963), which was a really nifty mock-Hitchcockian comedy thriller with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. The later film stars Gregory Peck, who's no Grant, and Sophia Loren, who isn't Hepburn but is Loren—which ain't nothing.Donen was reputedly highly unhappy with the script, despite being the movie's producer, and his cinematographer Christopher Challis records him saying that their only hope was to present the story in as stylish and eccentric a manner as possible: this, for the most part, they do. (A pretty-well identical tale is told of Sidney J. Furie and The Ipcress File, and the result is similar in each case: a pop-art expressionist fairyland London in which everyone is or might be a spy or double or treble agent.)The opening scene, in which George Coulouris is murdered at the optician with poisoned eyedrops,...

(See previous post: “Gay Pride Movie Series Comes to a Close: From Heterosexual Angst to Indonesian Coup.”) Ken Russell's Valentino (1977) is notable for starring ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev as silent era icon Rudolph Valentino, whose sexual orientation, despite countless gay rumors, seems to have been, according to the available evidence, heterosexual. (Valentino's supposed affair with fellow “Latin Lover” Ramon Novarro has no basis in reality.) The female cast is also impressive: Veteran Leslie Caron (Lili, Gigi) as stage and screen star Alla Nazimova, ex-The Mamas & the Papas singer Michelle Phillips as Valentino wife and Nazimova protégée Natacha Rambova, Felicity Kendal as screenwriter/producer June Mathis (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse), and Carol Kane – lately of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame. Bob Fosse's Cabaret (1972) is notable as one of the greatest musicals ever made. As a 1930s Cabaret presenter – and the Spirit of Germany – Joel Grey was the year's Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner. Liza Minnelli...

Vivien Leigh ca. late 1940s. Vivien Leigh movies: now controversial 'Gone with the Wind,' little-seen '21 Days Together' on TCM Vivien Leigh is Turner Classic Movies' star today, Aug. 18, '15, as TCM's “Summer Under the Stars” series continues. Mostly a stage actress, Leigh was seen in only 19 films – in about 15 of which as a leading lady or star – in a movie career spanning three decades. Good for the relatively few who saw her on stage; bad for all those who have access to only a few performances of one of the most remarkable acting talents of the 20th century. This evening, TCM is showing three Vivien Leigh movies: Gone with the Wind (1939), 21 Days Together (1940), and A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Marc Allégret: From André Gide lover to Simone Simon mentor (photo: Marc Allégret) (See previous post: "Simone Simon Remembered: Sex Kitten and Femme Fatale.") Simone Simon became a film star following the international critical and financial success of the 1934 romantic drama Lac aux Dames, directed by her self-appointed mentor – and alleged lover – Marc Allégret.[1] The son of an evangelical missionary, Marc Allégret (born on December 22, 1900, in Basel, Switzerland) was to have become a lawyer. At age 16, his life took a different path as a result of his romantic involvement – and elopement to London – with his mentor and later "adoptive uncle" André Gide (1947 Nobel Prize winner in Literature), more than 30 years his senior and married to Madeleine Rondeaux for more than two decades. In various forms – including a threesome with painter Théo Van Rysselberghe's daughter Elisabeth – the Allégret-Gide relationship remained steady until the late '20s and their trip to...

She won Oscars for her Scarlett O'Hara and Blanche DuBois, yet Vivien Leigh – born 100 years ago this month – was always subject to Hollywood's impossible demands on its female stars
Every great Hollywood star is both an actor and the embodiment of a myth. Film transforms them, turning their selves, their presence, their talents, into an individual archetypal narrative, one seen both in their movies but also in the public knowledge of their private lives: wounded Monroe; malleable Audrey Hepburn; James Stewart, the irascible, increasingly neurotic all-American guy. Vivien Leigh is one of Britain's few genuine women "movie stars"; her myth is memorable and dark, her life a rise and fall story, centred on the consequences of what was then called her "manic depression" – around her vulnerability, her promiscuity, her ageing. Her films themselves similarly want to tell us stories about suffering and resilience, about surviving and about being punished for doing so.

‘Caper’ movies are a sub-genre of the crime film that in the past 50 years has created some highly entertaining, memorable pieces of cinema. Each of the classics of the sub-genre seems to follow a simple set of just three rules:
The ensemble cast, led by a strong leading actor, play a group of down-on-their-luck men (they are either criminals, ex-cons, reluctant soldiers, or unemployed) who band together to carry out a clever and audacious heist. The audience throughout cheers for the ‘criminals’ because we know they are not Really ‘bad guys’ and, until the very final moments, we hope that they will get away with the crime (any maybe afterwards). The script is as clever as the cinematic crime itself and has a strong element of black – and usually quite socially subversive – humor.
****
The top five are probably The League of Gentlemen (1960), Ocean’s Eleven (1960), The Italian Job (1969), Three Kings...

The fine folks at the MGM Limited Edition DVD-r dove deep into their vaults to present a groovy sixties ghoulfest on DVD for all you fear fans. Doctor Blood’S Coffin was a staple of late night TV and horror hosts for several decades ( Chicago’s Svengoolie featured it 1998 ). It’s bright color photography made it a valuable asset to stations wanting a break from the black and white classics. Of course Coffin may owe its existence to the success of Hammer Films’ color fright fests of the late 1950′s. After the box office numbers generated by these new takes on Frankenstein and Dracula, many other British studios wanted a piece of the growing thriller audience. Caralan Productions even went as far as hiring the beautiful ( and buxom ) Hazel Court ( Peter Cushing’s doomed love from Hammer’s hit The Curse Of Frankenstein ) as the leading lady. Perhaps due to budgetary constraints,...

Mod DVDs are a boon to genre movie fans. Studios are releasing movies that wouldn't generate enough profits to make a wide release feasible, thus allowing fans to purchase films that might have remained in a vault forever. The cost is a bit of an issue (you can't wait for these titles to end up in a Walmart dump bin sale), but at least one can buy a decent quality DVD without resorting to bootleg copies.
That said, I doubt many horror fans were clamoring for Doctor Blood's Coffin, a recent addition to the MGM Limited Edition Collection. While the film does feature the lovely Hazel Court, its plodding story and lack of monster action dooms this 1961 British horror film to being little more than a decent time-waster you'd catch on television.

I'm still rubbing my eyes in disbelief as I write this one. One of the most obscure little flicks ever made, Doctor Blood's Coffin, is getting ready to hit DVD via MGM/Fox's Manufacturing on Demand program; and as a result we're as giddy as schoolgirls around the DC offices!
The flick, directed by Sidney Furie and starring Kieron Moore, Hazel Court, and Ian Hunter, focuses on what happens when a disbarred doctor starts performing grafting experiments on some unfortunate and terrified villagers.

Keira Knightley is the top contender to star in the latest film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s "Anna Karenina" for Working Title reports The Daily Mail.
Considered the "greatest novel ever written" in various polls over the years, the eight-part novel deals with a 19th century Russian woman trapped in a loveless marriage who becomes a social outcast when she has an affair with the aristocrat Count Vronsky.
"Atonement" and "Pride and Prejudice" director Joe Wright is helming the film from a script by Tom Stoppard. Though having discussed the film, no deals with Knightley have been made and the project is still in early stages with Stoppard’s screenplay due in some time before Christmas.
Working Title's Tim Bevan says the script is one of several for Wright to consider as his next project with the decision likely to be made early next year.
