Last month, AMC announced that the eighth season of Fear the Walking Dead, which is set to begin airing on May 14th, will be the final season. Now cinematographer David Morrison has taken to Instagram to mark the fact that filming is underway on the series finale. Morrison said, “Been looking forward to this for a while. Years in the making. Let’s do this!” The series finale is being directed by Michael E. Satrazemis, a franchise regular who has directed seventeen episodes of The Walking Dead, twenty episodes of Fear the Walking Dead, and three episodes of Tales of the Walking Dead.
The Walking Dead wrapped up its eleven season run on AMC last year, so it seems fitting that Fear the Walking Dead, its first companion series, is following its example and wrapping up as well. Especially since there are a bunch of new spin-offs to look forward...

The holidays are winding down and that means we at Ioncinema.com are gearing up for our annual pilgrimage to Park City where an A-list of documentaries is now set to premiere. Earlier this month Tabitha Jackson and the Sundance doc programming team let the cats out of the bag, unsurprisingly announcing much anticipated Us Doc Competition titles such as the Ross Brothers’ Western, Louie Psihoyos’ Racing Extinction, Marc Silver’s 3 1/2 Minutes and Lyric Cabral and David Felix Sutcliffe’s (T)Error, along with some surprises like Bryan Carberry and Clay Tweel’s bizarro Kickstarted doc Finders Keepers (see trailer below). Having been produced by the fine folks behind The King of Kong and Undefeated, the film bears all the markings of its well regarded pedigree, yet appears to be of even odder ilk, following the story that unfolded when a severed human foot was discovered in a grill bought at a North Carolina auction.

Turkey or no turkey, these next couple of days lucky filmmakers who’ve been selected to screen as part of the Sundance Film Festival will get the invitation notice straight from John Cooper and the Park City programming team, and thus, those that we’re betting have made the cut have also inched up the list a bit. One of those that seem an obvious choice to premiere at the fest is director Steve Hoover and producer Danny Yourd’s Crocodile Gennadiy. Following up their Grand Jury Prize winning Blood Brother with incredible turnaround time, our new most anticipated film tracks the delicate operations of Gennadiy Mokhnenko, a Ukrainian activist, orphanage manager and savior of countless children whose addict parents favor injected cold medicine and alcohol over them. Part heartwrenching domestic drama, part sleuth thriller, the film looks to use the Ukrainian uprising as a backdrop to highlight its protagonist...

Yesterday I stumbled on the following short film from Ridley Scott titled "Boy and Bicycle" of which he directed in 1962 while a student at the Royal College of Art in London. Shot over the course of six weeks, for ?65 (approx. $108 today) on 16mm and featuring his brother, the late Tony Scott, in the lead role, the short follows a young teen as he skips school. The film was shot in various locations in Hartlepool, North East England. The short would eventually be finished in 1965 when Scott secured financing from the British Film Institute and would then include theme music by James Bond composer John Barry. The short immediately caught my eye and after searching the Internet for commentary from others, most of which feel they see imagery they will later recognize in Scott's Alien, Blade Runner and Black Rain, I think the more obvious discussion points are visual comparisons to...

Hilary Brougher made a splash at the fest with her sophomore Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award winning drama Stephanie Daley (Sundance ’06) but it’s been nada since this minor stroke of genius. After some early casting hiccups, Brougher’s adaptation of Jane Mendelsohn’s 2000 teen novel of the same name found Sophie Curtis, Kelly Reilly and Graham Phillips toplining. Production took place during the summer, with post production beginning in August, which means with some overtime work, Innocence – a Killer Films’ production could be ready for a showcase. Brougher reteams with cinematographer David Rush Morrison and editor Keith Reamer and with Production Designer Susan Block (The Believer, Grace Is Gone) also contributes.

As Roland Emmerich'S disaster movie 2012 erupts at the global box office, American scientists have assured people that the world is not coming to an end in that year.
The film is inspired by a date in the Mayan calendar - equivalent to December 21, 2012 in modern reckoning - that marks the end of a cycle and is often wrongly interpreted as the date of doomsday.
The marketing for the movie includes a spoof website run by the fictitious Institute for Human Continuity. It asks visitors to enter a 'survival lottery' which will decide a limited number to be rescued from global destruction.
But many people believe the website's claims are real. As a result, Nasa has stepped in to dispel rumours that Earth really is heading for apocalypse.
The National Aeronautical and Space Agency has answered a series of key questions on its website to allay fears which have been heightened by the new movie.

Disaster movie 2012 inspired panic in the States with Nasa having to reassure Americans that the world wasn't about to end. Is movie viral marketing getting too clever for its own good?
When Columbia Pictures launched a marketing campaign for 2012 – the latest disaster movie from serial Earth molester Roland Emmerich, where the planet, played by America, is set for impending doom – they didn't do it by halves.
First, there was a teaser trailer showing a tsunami crashing over the Himalayas. The Earth was going to end in 2012, it said, and the world's governments aren't doing enough to prepare us. Search "2012", it said, for "the truth" (the "truth" turned out to be over 1,000 real websites and 175 real books obsessed with 2012 as the end of time).
Then, there was a fake website – the "Institute for Human Continuity" – which consisted of a screen stating that for 25 years they'd been assessing threats to the continuation of mankind,...

Well it's not actually 2012 the movie that's got Nasa worried. It's how it's being promoted. The studio has pulled out all the stops for the viral marketing campaign, and a lot of the promotions look a little too much like real news. And of course the whole idea for the movie came from a supposed Mayan doomsday prediction that some people have apparently been taking just a little too seriously.
The movie's interlinked network of realistic-looking websites and blogs — not to mention TV commercials — has been raising the hackles of prominent science bloggers for a while. And Nasa scientist David Morrison, whose online column "Ask an Astrobiologist" has been deluged with questions about doom in 2012, has decided to fight back with a point-by-point rebuttal. He patiently explains that, despite the cascade of apocalyptic imagery director Roland Emmerich is preparing unleash upon us, there is in fact no scientific evidence that...

Cue collective sighs of relief.

Take That Roland Emmerich! The problem with these end-of-the-world movies, like 2012, is that when they come out people sometimes freak because they actually believe the world is coming to an end. The marketing strategy for the upcoming Roland Emmerich film doesn't help either, since it seems the studio wants people to believe the 2012 Mayan prophecy -- so much so that they've gone and created a whole slew of fake websites and Facebook pages tied to the film and tied to the Mayan legend. Of course, this sort of fluff may help the film's box office take when it hits theaters, but it certainly doesn't help the folks at Nasa who've been fielding thousands of emails from people who, thanks to the movie and its marketing plan, think the world is ending in 2012.

Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski is developing Oblivion, based on his own concept, as a feature for Radical Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Kosinski has signed to direct the action feature and will produce along with Radical principal Barry Levine, filmmaker David Fincher and Anonymous Content's David Morrison.
The story centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.
Kosinski began Oblivion when he moved to Los Angeles four years ago, coming up with the concept as something to kick-start a feature directing career. "I was looking to make a science fiction film that I could do on a budget," he said of the initial concept.

Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski is filling up his dance card after 2010 with the announcement that he's developing his own original science fiction/action movie called Oblivion. In a story published in today's Hollywood Reporter, the story comes out that when Kosinski first moved to L.A. four years ago he hatched the idea of Oblivion as a way he could kick-start his directing career.
"I was looking to make a science fiction film that I could do on a budget," Kosinski said in the pages of the Reporter. "It's grown since then, but it's intended to be a very spare science fiction film, with a small cast but big ideas and big landscapes."
Eventually he met up with Radical Pictures and found out that they had a comic book line. Kosinski then started developing Oblivion as a novel with 40 painted images interspersed within its pages. He's still planning on...

Joseph Kosinski, director of the ridiculously anticipated (and totally awesome looking) Tron Legacy, is already sinking his claws into his next project. Radical Pictures teams up with him to form the upcoming feature called Oblivion, which also is being developed as a graphic novel of sorts.

Joseph Kosinski, director of the Tron Legacy, is all set to take us to a whole other realm of existence known as Oblivion. Don't be expecting any glowing suits or light-cycles though ... this world is darker. A whole lot darker.

Oblivion also will become an illustrated novel, Radical Publishing's first venture beyond comic books, done in a format featuring 40 fully painted landscape images that will accompany the prose.
