Hotline TNT have shared their latest single, “Out of Town.” Take a listen below.
Characterized by noisy, lo-fi production and a clear, melodic vocal line, “Out of Town” displays the high energy and lyrical expression that Hotline TNT have been honing-in on. The single follows previous releases, “Protocol” and “I Thought You’d Change” — the former of which got an honorable mention from Consequence’s Song of the Week roundup — which all arrive ahead of the band’s sophomore album, Cartwheel, due on November 3rd via Third Man Records. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Speaking about “Out of Town,” frontman Will Anderson explained that he was inspired by Minnesota acts like The Replacements. “These days most people wouldn’t have the foolishness to start a song by singing the words ‘baby girl,’” Anderson said in a statement. “But I wanted to channel my Minnesotan roots and try it out, Paul Westerberg style.

Glenn “Spot” Lockett, the trailblazing punk producer behind Sst Records and artistic statements by the likes of Hüsker Dü and Black Flag, has died at 72. The influential engineer had been battling fibrosis before he suffered a stroke several months earlier and ultimately passed away on Saturday at a healthcare facility in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
Former Sst Records co-owner Joe Carducci broke the news of Lockett’s death in a statement via Facebook, sharing that “his nurse told me he woke up alright but later showed no pulse and several attempts to revive him failed.” He noted the producer’s preferred name spelling “in all caps with a dot in the middle of the O” and called him “an architect of the natural approach to recording a band in the punk era.”

Hüsker Dü bassist Greg Norton was meant to head out on the road in late June for his first tour with UltraBomb – the supergroup he formed with The Mahones’ Finny McConnell and UK Subs’s Jamie Oliver – before a prostate cancer diagnosis halted the scheduled shows. Now, Oliver and other friends of the musician have launched a GoFundMe to raise money for his medical expenses.

When Lollapalooza revealed this week that Metallica will headline the festival this summer, the announcement reminded some fans of the drama that resulted when the Bay Area bangers first headlined there in 1996. At the time, Lolla was still the premiere showcase for so-called “alternative” bands; top-billed acts in its first five years had included Jane’s Addiction, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice in Chains, and the Smashing Pumpkins.
Metallica, on the other hand, represented the mainstream — their mega-selling Black Album still dominated rock radio with singles like “Enter Sandman...

Bob Mould has surprise-released The Ocean, a new EP containing solo acoustic renditions of three songs. Two come from his recent past — “The Ocean” and “Forecast of Rain” both featured on his 2020 album Blue Hearts — and one from his Hüsker Dü days, “Divide and Conquer” from 1985’s Flip Your Wig. Mould recorded the songs at his San Francisco home studio, Granary Music, for NPR’s World Café.
Mould is also releasing a new video for “Forecast of Rain,” which he filmed at Stoughton, Wisconsin last October on a solo tour.

Richard Thompson has been one of rock’s MVPs since the mid-Sixties. He was a founding member of Fairport Convention — the band that invented the merger of rock and British folk — and his subsequent, musically timeless albums with his ex-wife Linda have long been revered: Their 1982 Shoot Out the Lights made Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. He’s also earned the respect of many of his fellow musicians; his songs have been covered by Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant, Bonnie Raitt, Dinosaur Jr., Bob Mould, and the Pointer Sisters,...

Thirty years ago, Bob Mould released an album titled Black Sheets of Rain, a turn of phrase that could have doubled as his outlook at the time and for many of the years that followed. But he seemed to soften up last year when he put out Sunshine Rock, a cheery, decidedly anti-sardonic offering of hope with schmaltzy strings on several songs. It even sported a jaunty, upbeat cover of Shocking Blue’s lost Sixties nugget, “Send Me a Postcard.” But on his latest LP. the sparkle has faded.

Bob Mould has shared a new song, “Siberian Butterfly,” from his next album, Blue Hearts, out September 25th via Merge Records.
“Siberian Butterfly” is a blast of classic alt-rock, and, in a statement, Mould explained that the song began with him parsing the notion of “collectors” — “people with excessive means who gather the works of creative folk for their ego-driven portfolio” — before it transformed into something more personal.
“As I kept writing, the narrative shifted toward themes of change, growth and freedom,” he said. “These motifs are central to how we become our true selves.

Bob Mould has has released a seething new song, “Forecast of Rain,” set to appear on his upcoming album, Blue Hearts, out September 25th via Merge Records.

The recent announcement of the upcoming Mötley Crüe/Poison/Def Leppard tour inspired pangs of hair-metal nostalgia among a certain generation. Hüsker Dü began making records in the Reagan era, and their hardcore-punk-bad-trip-psychedelia — exemplified in a white-knuckled cover of The Byrds’ “Eight Miles High” — was a perfect reflection of Wtf rage at America’s right-wing hijacking. So it’s welcome and fitting to hear new music from ex-frontman Bob Mould during America’s current cultural crisis. What may surprise some, though, is how violently happy Mould can sound on Sunshine Rock. “Look above you, I will love you/In the sunshine” he hollers on the title track, savoring the feel of...

Beirut music sounds like the fuzzy memory of a wedding involving distant relatives, where you were swept up in folk dances and traditional drinking games, and which left you, through your hangover haze, convinced that these kin live richer, more soulful lives than your own — and if you could just hold on to something of the experience, it might, y’know, change you, make you better, less anxious, happier. It’s tremendously beautiful music, and profoundly sad, but also full of hope, because sad beauty can do that.

While it’s true that the days of minutes-long intros with original songs and catchy melodies might be in the past, there’s no denying that shows are still finding memorable (and in a few cases, iconic) ways to open each episode.

Logline: One woman, One man, a lot of weed, a little crying, and no sexual attraction whatsoever. Love is so gay.
Elevator Pitch:
Inspired by creator Alicia J. Rose’s real-life relationships with her own “gusbands” (a.k.a: gay best friends), “The Benefits of Gusbandry” follows serial relationship-killer Jackie Rosenblum and charming yet single River Manning as they navigate the modern world and find a new kind of significant otherness that unfolds over a seven-episode first season that covers dating, babies, parents and a few pot cookies, earning recognition from Best of Portland (Winner,...

Ryan Adams' self-title album is out tomorrow. But today, this little infomercial is the star. Garry Shandling, Jeff Garlin, Don Was and Bob Mould co-star in this truly bizarre piece of internet ephemera, which may withstand the passage of time due to its use of parakeets and the skittish secretary trope. Single "Gimme Something Good" also has its moment to shine, if we can call it that. "Ryan Adams" is out on the singer-songwriter's own Paxam label, I highly recommend the aforementioned song, along with "Wrecking Ball" and "Trouble." Guests like Johnny Depp, Adams' wife Mandy Moore and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench lend their talents to the set. Here's a great profile of Adams via Buzzfeed. Read Melinda Newman's review of "Ryan Adams" here.

Buzzfeed declares that Faking It is “changing the nature of queer representation” as it avoids assigning a sexuality to its two lead characters , even as the sexual tension builds between them.
Cougar Town alum Brian Van Holt has joined the cast of Syfy’s upcoming mini-series Ascension, according to EW. He’ll play the ship’s captain, who I’m sure is also the ship’s Penny Can champion.

How did an inappropriate reference to Kelis‘ “Milkshake” make it into the Scripps Spelling Bee? The event hires comedy writers to keep things lively by writing jokes and pop culture references for the clues. Multiple possibilities are written and, while the “Milkshake” reference was rejected, it ended in the announcers’ cards by mistake.
I need to start stocking up on rage in case this Walking Dead spoiler turns out to be true. I’m positive I can...

Elsinore is an indie-pop quartet out of Illinois, and although we haven’t been treated to new music from the group since 2010’s Yes Yes Yes, it seems the wait has been worth it. The band’s forthcoming album, Push/Pull was meticulously practiced and recorded, and was a year-and-a-half in the making before the work was finally complete. With the help of producer Beau Sorenson, known for his previous projects with Death Cab for Cutie and Bob Mould, Elsinore built on the strengths of Yes Yes Yes for a sound that’s fuller but still distinctly their sound. “Push/Pull was written...

Ah, Lgbt Pride – that sun-dappled, magical month when dance clubs grow wheels and rove about the city dropping go-go boys like dandruff, Lgbt-aligned politicians become local heroes, and rainbows make more touchdowns than Jerry Rice. (Yes, I had to look that up.)
As we take to the streets to celebrate the diversity, strength and impressive midriffs of our community, I wanted to take a moment to share some of the Lgbt entertainment that makes me proud to be gay. You know – the kind of show or artist or movie where, when it’s brought up in casual mixed conversation, you can’t Wait to tell everyone that there’s a gay person behind it.
It’s an odd list, and it’s probably one that no one other than me would come up with. But that’s what makes each of us a uniquely beautiful snowflake, right? I’d love to hear what talented artists,...

Last year was my first Fun Fun Fun Festival and it was, indeed, FunX3. It's an Austin-based variety festival for bands who are slightly left of center for most garden variety mainstream (despite the fact that Icona Pop blew up). There's the metal/hard rock/post-punk/hardcore stage, one for dance and hip-hop hybrids and one for That Time You Finally Saw Bob Mould. This year, the fest is already looking eclectic, with organizers announcing the first round of lineup additions. Ice-t is taking a break from "Svu" and reality TV to return to rapping on stage. Ice-t's been threatening to release an album...

In a letter published in a downstate Illinois newspaper, popular Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy wrote the "time is now" for marriage equality in the land of Lincoln.
Writing in the Belleville News-Democrat, Tweedy -- a Belleville, Ill. native now based in Chicago -- urged the Illinois state House of Representatives to approve same-sex marriage legislation:
By excluding same-sex couples from marriage, our state saddles them, their children and itself with second-class status. That is wrong, and it hurts Illinois families and businesses. … Nine other states have already extended the freedom to marry to gay and lesbian couples. I work and have friends in all those states, and I can say assuredly that it's time for Illinois to join them.
Tweedy has been outspoken about his support for marriage equality. Last year, he joined Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü) and Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) and other musicians in speaking out against...

Yesterday Rachel Maddow participated in a Reddit Q&A which means the internet could ask her whatever they wanted and she could decide what she wanted to answer. While there were a lot of nice things said about her and rude things asked of her, the MSNBC host did a wonderful job of answering some serious questions and some fun inquires from fans. Here are some of the things we enjoyed reading her answers to. (Questions and answers are all sic.)
Q: If you had to choose one story you've covered that you wish more people were aware of, what would it be?
It seems crazy that an ongoing war is an undercovered story, but I wish there was more debate about why and how and if we should still have 60,000 Americans in Afghanistan. It's not done, there are still real decisions to be made,...

Rachel Maddow, author and queen of MSNBC punditry, took to Reddit to do an Ama (“ask me anything”), joining Aziz Ansari and President Obama in the ranks of people who’ve jumped into the giant, crazy pool of Reddit in order to talk to Us, the American People about Congress, war, and the best rye whiskeys on the market.
Here’s what we learned:
She likes exclamation marks! Sometimes ironically! Maddow used the exclamatory clause no less than a dozen times in her answers — sometimes to, y’know, exclaim; sometimes to rejoin. For example: “And! But! And/But!”

For the first time in my life, I approached my end-of-the-year lists with trepidation, as 2012 had seemed disappointing, musically speaking. But when it came time to narrow my choices down, it turned out that there Had been plenty of good music, and I hadn't even reviewed it all here.

TV Guide has a look at the new Downton Abbey manservant, Alfred, along with word about Thomas's next storyline. I have to admit, I'm disappointed. At this point I want to see what happens to the schemer when he meets a good man who appeals to Thomas' best nature.
Following on his Hugo Award-winning episode, Neil Gaiman is writing another installment of Doctor Who. At the moment, it looks like the episode will air in the second half of the current season but it's still too early to be sure.
Armando Iannucci, creator of The Thick of It and Veep, says he's talking with HBO about a series set in the world of Silicon Valley workpalces.

Bob Mould spilled his guts in “See a Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody,” his autobiography released last year. He tackled some of the deep-seeded source of his “rage,” and the juicy stories behind fronting Husker Du, Sugar and starting his solo sets, all within the trappings of coming out of the closet in the early 1990s. Now, his new 2012 album “Silver Age” is all guts. The Merge release – out Sept. 4 -- is what Mould calls his “reaction” to his own autobiography, a spontaneous and carnal outpouring of power pop and ferocious rock tracks with the...

It might go without saying at this point that The A.V. Club is big on Bob Mould. The clip was filmed in San Francisco during Noise Pop and features Mould’s current band, including Superchunk’s Jon Wurster and Verbow's Jason ...

Today’s Must Read is a fantastic sneak peek inside the Film-Makers’ Coop archives on the Capital New York website. Learn about the more oddball artifacts it keeps, the efforts to preserve older films and more. The only thing I object to is Coop executive director M.M. Serra flatly stating that experimental film is not “entertainment.” Yeah, I understand the need to differentiate experimental film from mainstream film, but experimental film is Highly entertaining! It’s just “entertaining” in different ways than plot-driven film is. Watching an experimental film is not a downer of an intellectual experience. It’s fun! Can we all start saying this from now on: Experimental film is fun!Rick Trembles tackles Ridley Scott’s Prometheus for Motion Picture Purgatory. Bob Mould has been busy reviving Sugar's classic 1992 debut Copper Blue on the road lately with a great band that includes drummer Jon Wurster of Superchunk and bassist Jason Narducy of Telekinesis, and it sounds like old Bob Mould has been rubbing off on new Bob Mould. His new album, Silver Age, is described as "punishingly loud melodically sparkling pop/rock" in the vein that Mould has owned for most of his life. The record comes out Sept. 4 on Merge. Check out a tracklist below. Star Machine Silver Age The Descent Briefest Moment Steam Of Hercules ...
