The Batman stage show was thrown into chaos last week (ends17Jul11) when the superhero's famous car crashed on stage during rehearsals.
The story of the Caped Crusader has been brought to the stage for the first time in Batman Live, which opened in Britain this week (beg18Jul11) ahead of a planned global tour.
However, the production was jeopardised when the Batmobile - designed by Formula One car expert Professor Gordon Murray - smashed into part of the Gotham City set during a rehearsal just days before the show was due to open in Manchester, England on Tuesday.
No one was hurt in the accident, and quick-thinking producers were able to borrow a replacement car from an exhibition in the city, and the show went ahead as planned on Tuesday.
Set designer Es Devlin tells BBC News, "We hope that won't ever happen again. Luckily we had two (cars). It wasn't good. You couldn't have put it on stage. It (the car) literally came out, swizzled around and crashed into the Bank of Gotham. The Bank of Gotham took a bit of a hit but we patched it up and I don't think anyone would notice."
Batman Live, which features an array of aerial stunts and big screen effects, opened to mostly positive reviews, with many critics giving the stage show a favourable comparison to Broadway's troubled Spider-Man musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, which has been beset by problems.

Here are some photos and a video of the batmovile from the Batman Live World Arena Tour. The vehicle was desined by Gordon Murray who designs race cars. Here is a description from of the vehicle:
Murray designed the Formula One cars that won six world championships, then he went on to create the incredible McLaren F1 supercar for the road. So when he was given the task of creating the latest Batmobile, he came up with a design that projects Formula One design elements as they might exist in 15-20 years, including what he calls "breathable" carbon fiber.
I am guessint hat this is some ultralight carbon fiber for easy transport of the vehicle. The design really looks similar to an F1 supercar. It looks really cool, but I really love the look of Nolan's batmobile. Check out the images and vid below and share your thoughts:

The upcoming Batman Live world arena tour was previewed in West London earlier today. Digital Spy went down to witness the unveiling of the custom-built Batmobile - created by Formula 1 designer Professor Gordon Murray - and was also treated to the first glimpse of Batman himself in costume. With Christopher Nolan's gritty take on the Batman franchise reaching its conclusion next year in The Dark Knight Rises, it's refreshing to see Batman Live avoiding comparisons to Batman's darker big-screen adventures by focusing instead on the character's camp, spandex-ridden roots. Watch the Batman Live Batmobile video below: Batmobile designer Murray said at the unveiling: "It is indeed a pleasure to be here and it was an honour to have been invited to design the Batmobile for Batman Live. Batman is bursting out of comic books and the big screens and heading into big arenas! Er, we'd best let Louisa explain...
There's a time and a place for subtlety and understatement, but the Batman Live world arena tour ain't it. Promoted at Tuesday's European press launch as an unashamedly huge, acrobatic, pyrotechnic, all guns blazing, family extravaganza, Batman Live makes some big promises.
The good news is, it might just be able to keep them. Featuring stage design by Es Devlin, designer of the closing ceremony for the 2012 Olympic Games as well as arena tours for the likes of Lady Gaga, it's safe to say that spectacle will abound.
We were treated to two sneak glimpses of virtual set models at Tuesday's launch, both of which exhibited the scale and ambition of the project.
The first showed Gotham City at night, jutting out on a thrust stage far into the arena.

Fear that the upcoming Batman Live stage tour will mirror the disastrous Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark Broadway show was addressed today when the production unveiled the cast and costume in a media launch in London. At the very least, they're already doing three things right: the script is written by a comic book writer, it has no newly made-up villain, and Bono is nowhere near this thing.
Yes, as the producers keep stressing, this will not be a musical like Turn Off the Dark, despite being directed by Anthony Van Laast, who's famous for choreographing musicals like Mamma Mia!, Sister Act and Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. Not that I have anything against a Batman musical (Hey, The Brave and the Bold did it brilliantly), but it's probably better for this production to focus on stunts and awes rather than songs, and to draw as much distinction as possible...

My girlfriend bought me tickets for the opening night Newcastle performance of Batman Live in July for my birthday and from the looks of today’s media launch at the London O2 Arena for the £12 million spectacle, it’s going to be money well spent.
Well it got me excited at least. I’ve just shared the images with Simon who tells me that the designs of the characters are ‘from all other the place in DC Comics history’ suggesting that it’s a mix of Batman Returns (Danny Devito’s Penguin), Batman Forever’s Batman (though he looks like Michael Keaton), the modern day ‘Hush’ takes on Catwoman, The Riddler and Poision Ivy, a kind of Jack Nicholson-esque suited Joker and he couldn’t really pinpoint the others…. but said the whole thing ‘has a Joel Schmaucher feel.’
I said it’s a live-action cartoon by all accounts and aimed towards kids,...

The world's most efficient electric car isn't much to look at--yet. Designed by Gordon Murray (the design mind behind the tiny T25 city car) and Zytek Automotive, the T27 Ev will supposedly be incredibly efficient thanks to its low weight (1,653 lbs), "clean sheet design," and bank of lithium ion batteries that can deliver a 60- to 70-mile range.
The vehicle will be manufactured using Murray's iStream process, which uses computer designs and welding instead of stamped-together metal sheets. The process is so streamlined that iStream factories can be just a fifth of the size of normal plants. Overall, Murray believes that the process can lower the T27's life-cycle emissions by 67% compared to an average car and 27% compared to the closest Ev rival.
The T27 isn't quite ready to go to market, though--Murray still has to design a motor, gearbox, mounting system, and inverter for the three-seat vehicle. And of course,...
