On the surface, there’s very little about either Open Your Eyes or Vanilla Sky that screams Erotic Thriller. Both Alejandro Amenábar’s 1997 Spanish original and Cameron Crowe’s 2001 American remake are frequently classified as psychological thrillers, or even dramas, due to their interest in exploring the downward spiral of the main character.
And yet, upon closer examination, both films owe a heavy debt to the tropes of the Erotic Thriller.
As we’ve previously explored in this editorial series, Erotic Thrillers embody the characteristics of Film Noir, albeit with a more contemporary perspective when it comes to sex and violence. There’s often a healthy dose of voyeurism and fetishism, typically embodied in doubles of characters (usually women). And, naturally, sex and death become intertwined as the desires of characters tend to result in dangerous consequences.
Nearly all of these elements are present in Open Your Eyes and Vanilla Sky.

With A New Teaser Trailer, ‘Money Heist‘ Spinoff ‘Berlin’ Announces A Release Date.
Here’s all we know about the Money Heist spinoff’s release, cast, and narrative, with Pedro Alonso returning his role as Berlin.
Although Berlin was murdered at the end of Money Heist Part 2 (after being shot by police), Alonso continued to be a part of the program since the writers incorporated him in multiple flashbacks to explain other subplots.
It was an excellent strategy since it helped move the story ahead and enabled them to build up his spinoff by giving viewers a glimpse into Berlin’s background before he participated in the Royal Mint theft.
Viewers will finally learn how Andrés de Fonollosa became the legendary titular jewel thief now that he has his spinoff, Money Heist’s Berlin.
When will Berlin be released?
The Money Heist will be released in Berlin on December 29, 2023, and available exclusively on Netflix.

Caro’s debut feature was a film adaptation of I Don’t Know Whether to Slit My Wrists or Leave Them Long (No Sé Si Cortarme las Venas o Dejármelas Largas), which he initially wrote and directed for the theater. TV program “Insiders,” set up at Spain-based company iZen, has become Netflix’s first Spanish original reality show. The aim was to be innovative and, at the same time, recover the essence of old reality TV.
“Insiders” is produced by José Velasco, iZen president and founder, who years ago was behind the local version of “Big Brother,” where reality TV took off.
Velasco and Álvaro Díaz, entertainment director at Netflix Spain, talked about reality TV at last week’s Conecta Fiction & Entertainment industry meeting in Toledo.
In “Insiders,” hosted by “Money Heist” star Najwa Nimri, 12 contestants think they are in the final stage of a casting call for a reality show about which they had no details. But the reality show has in fact already begun, without their knowing it. The winner took home a €100,000 prize.
“Insiders’” Season 1 launched on Oct. 21; Season 2 premiered on May 19.

Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of 30 Coins, the Spanish mystery horror series that premiered on HBO Max in 2020 and was renewed for a second season in February. The eight-part Season 2 is now in production in Spain, Italy, the U.S., France and the UK, with a 2023 premiere date planned on HBO Max worldwide and on HBO in the U.S.
The series, which hails from Álex de la Iglesia who directs and co-writes with Jorge Guerricaechevarría, centers on Father Vergara, an exorcist, boxer and ex-convict, who is exiled by the church to a remote town in Spain. He becomes linked to a series of mysterious paranormal events in the village, and with Paco, the town’s naive mayor, and Elena, a restless veterinarian, they become caught up in a global conspiracy: a battle for control of the 30 silver coins paid to the apostle Judas Iscariot for the betrayal...

Ask Jose Velasco, 60, what he thinks about the Conecta Fiction Honorary award he’s receiving on Thursday June 23 and his first response is, “Why?”
The self-effacing founder and president of powerhouse content producer iZen Group says he is grateful to those who decided to give it to him, “rightly or not.” “I guess it’s because I’ve been in this business for 35 years and have done everything from fiction to reality to game shows,” he muses, adding: “But if they think this will make me retire, they’re mistaken.”
“I guess I am of the generation of people in Spain who were trying the shape the country’s television landscape,” he notes. Indeed, Velasco founded and ran one of the pioneering entertainment giants of Spain, Globomedia. He later established Zeppelin TV as well as Diagonal TV and Linze Producciones, all of which formed part of Endemol, then owned by Telefonica Media.

Appropriately enough given the show’s enigmatic nature, the slow drip of information about a second season of Spanish genre legend Alex de la Iglesia’s occult horror series “30 Coins” has, for the most part, been cryptic at best. That tradition continued Friday, after HBO Max confirmed the second season, when “Money Heist’s” Najwa Nimri, one of Spain’s biggest film and TV stars, teased her participation in the upcoming season.
Apart from the show’s three leads – Eduard Fernández as Father Vergara, Megan Montaner as veterinarian-turned-demon-hunter Elena and Miguel Ángel Silvestre as Mayor Paco – no other casting has yet been confirmed, but Nimri posted an Instagram story which included part of the Season 2 teaser and the phrase: “We start a new adventure,” while also tweeting #30Monedas – the show’s Spanish-language title.

Sandra Bullock is back on Netflix, and this time, it isn’t blindfolded in a post-apocalyptic horror (a la 2018’s “Bird Box”). Her latest feature flick on the streamer, “The Unforgivable,” directed by Nora Fingscheidt, debuted at No. 1 globally on Dec. 10 and generated 85.86 million hours of subscriber viewership. In the film, Bullock stars as Ruth Slater, a woman recently released from prison who re-enters a society that refuses to forgive her past or the murder she committed.
Fingscheidt joins a cohort of female directors and showrunners that dominated Netflix’s Top 10 lists for the week of Dec. 6-12, including Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Halle Berry (“Bruised”), Mary Lambert (“A Castle for Christmas”), Clare Knight (“Back to the Outback”), Maria Torres (“Anonymously Yours”), Mar Targarona (“Two”), Molly Smith Metzler (“Maid”) and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (“The Witcher”). Campion’s Western-drama — starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee — took the No.

For nearly 190 million total viewing hours last week, Netflix audiences were screaming the rallying cry “Bella Ciao” after the fifth and final installment of the Spanish drama series “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”) dropped Dec. 3 on the streamer.
Within two days, “Money Heist” stole the thunder of Netflix’s English language shows, rising to No. 1 on Netflix’s Global top 10 list with far more total viewing hours than the week’s top English-language show, “Lost in Space,” which logged 47.38 million hours for Season 3 during the week of Nov. 29. “Money Heist,” the twisty story of a bank robbery, features standout performances from Úrsula Corberó, Álvaro Morte, Itziar Ituño, Pedro Alonso and Najwa Nimri, among other international talent.
Other non-English shows that have proven their staying power in Netflix’s Global Top 10 include Korean dramas “Squid Game” (21.2 million hours) and “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” (11.56 million) which have held their ground on non-English language...

Money Heist may be ending at Netflix, but the franchise will live on.
In a surprising announcement, star Pedro Alonso has announced a spinoff based on the character of Berlin/Andrés de Fonollosa is in the works at Netflix.
Alonso broke the news at a fan event on Tuesday at the Palacio Vistalegre in Madrid.
“It is a memorable moment because it is the end of one cycle and the beginning of another,” Alonso said.
“Today I was talking to Jesús Colmenar and we were saying that now we walk into the unknown, open to whatever happens and without expectations," he said.
"I know that [the Money Heist writers] will give the series every possible twist and turn."
"The responsibility [of spinning off such a popular series] can be a burden and a prison. I hope we continue to have the courage to use this wonderful energy to risk everything again.”

Money Heist, otherwise known as La Casa De Papel, is coming to an end but Netflix is expanding the heist universe.
The streamer has ordered a spinoff of the hit Spanish drama series, centered around popular character Berlin, otherwise known as Andrés de Fonollosa, played by Pedro Alonso.
The show is set to launch in 2023.
The digital platform didn’t give out many details of the spinoff, but the Berlin character is the second-in-command of the Royal Mint of Spain heist and also planned the Bank of Spain heist, which he shared with The Professor and Palermo.
It comes as Money Heist is ending with its last five episodes dropping on December 3.
The series was created by Alex Pina and tells the story of the heists through the perspective of one of the robbers, Tokyo, played by Ursula Corbero. It also stars Álvaro Morte, Itziar Ituño, Miguel Herrán, Jaime Lorente,...

Where to Watch “Insiders”: Netflix
At one point in “Insiders,” there’s a montage of people being told they’re being put through into the next “round” of a reality show casting process. Nearly every one of them asks if they can give a hug or kiss to the producer giving them the good news. (They only get handshakes.) It’s a sustained burst of happiness and relief from a group of individuals who don’t even realize that the show they think they’re auditioning for is well under way.
That’s the main hook for “Insiders,” a series that puts a dozen people through the paces of a “training” period, ostensibly to see which of them is cut out for being on a show that none of them know will never actually come. Instead, the minimalist practice living space that they...

The end is near for Netflix's smash hit international series Money Heist.
As previously reported, the second half of the fifth -- and final -- season is set to launch around the world on Friday, December 3.
It will be a bittersweet conclusion, for sure, but after years of high-octane drama, it's time to give the surviving members of the team a much-needed rest.
Five episodes remain, and they mark the end of the heist, and after the way the first half of the season concluded, well, it's going to be a tough watch.
"The gang has been shut in the Bank of Spain for over 100 hours," reads the logline for Season 5.
"They have managed to rescue Lisbon, but their darkest moment is upon them after losing one of their own."
"The Professor has been captured by Sierra and, for the first time, doesn’t have an escape plan."

The following contains spoilers for Money Heist season 4.
If there’s one thing that can be said about Money Heist, it’s that it’s been a wild ride. Even the way the show got popular was crazy. The original Spanish series, La Casa de Papel (literally translated as “the house of paper”), was cancelled after one season. But when Netflix picked it up, the show blew up. It blew up like an exploding bank vault with a resounding boom that was heard all around the world. The show became the most watched non-English series on Netflix, not to mention a global symbol of resistance.
Calling the upcoming bulk of episodes the fifth season can be a bit confusing, as the show’s story structure is different from the traditional TV model. Money Heist masters the cliffhanger, and all the season divisions just intensify that. There have only been two...

If there’s one thing that Money Heist has mastered, it’s the cliffhanger. The cancelled Spanish series that was reborn on Netflix took the world by storm, sparking a global revolution that has so many nail-biting edge-of-your-seat twists and turns that it’s nearly impossible not to binge it all once you’re hooked. The show is a relentless rollercoaster ride and oh so addictive. You never know who is going to live and who is going to die. In fact, not even the actors don’t know.

Netflix released a trailer for the first five episodes of the final season of ‘La Casa de Papel,’ which stream on Sept. 3.
In this batch of episodes, which the streamer is calling “La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) Part 5, Volume 1,” the gang faces one of its darkest moments after losing one of their own. The Professor (Álvaro Morte) has been captured by inspector Sierra (Najwa Nimri) and, for the first time, doesn’t have an escape plan. However, that’s not the only problem because now the army is coming.
In the trailer, which you can watch below, Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) describes the 100 hours they have spent shut in the Bank of Spain as feeling like 100 years. Also, the Professor reveals the stormwater tank has been found and Colonel Tamayo (Fernando Cayo) assembles an army to go into the Bank of Spain.

Broken into two parts, “Money Heist” Part Five, Volume 1 will launch worldwide on Sept. 3, with Volume 2 landing three months later on Dec. 3. Each part will include five episodes, filling out a ten-hour arc to end the series’ story as told by its narrator and protagonist Tokyo.

There’s no shortage of intriguing and enigmatic characters on Netflix’s Money Heist (La Casa de Papel).
Money Heist Season 3 of the crime drama introduced fans to Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri), the lead police investigator in the Bank of Spain heist, and quite frankly, the most puzzling character to date.
Sierra is an exciting and worthy replacement for former police inspector Raquel Murillo aka Lisbon, who left her policing days behind to join the Professor’s merry band of robbers following their first heist at the Royal Mint.
With a lollipop in hand, Sierra is ready to stop the robbery of the bank in its tracks and finally bring the criminals to justice.
Her actions and decisions bring a new level of unpredictability to the series, which makes her a worthy opponent for the Professor. Raquel played by his rules, but Sierra has figured out his rules and kept up with them…...
