Films which centre around team sports have long been a staple of popular cinema. Often the sport in question is an integral part of the story being told, these films making good use of a sporting event as a way to actualise the drama. Escape to Victory is a strange and wonderful example of this, with its well known (and slightly ridiculous) football game which closes the film. Over the years we’ve seen films such as Raging Bull, The Color of Money and A League of Their Own all using the inherent passion and spectacle to their narrative advantage.
As can be seen in some of those examples already mentioned, real life has inspired many a sporting cinematic outing, with Fighting with My Family, the magnificent I, Tonya, Ron Howard’s Rush and Michael Mann’s Ali being fairly recent examples of this. We are fixated by the people behind the achievement,...

Om Puri and Linda Bassett in East Is East We've got a bit of a retro focus going on for this week's selection and if you're looking for more inspiration, you can catch the tale of a tiger or two in this week's Streaming Spotlight.
East Is East, 11.25pm, Film4, Monday, August 2
Ayub Khan-Din skilfully adapts his culture clash play for the big screen, while Damien O'Donnell directs with plenty of energy to tell this Seventies set story of a Pakistani migrant to the UK, George Khan (Om Puri), his British wife Ella (Linda Bassett) and their family. Khan has a grand plan for his kids that includes arranged marriages but they have other ideas with revolution on the horizon. The humour here skewers its targets but there is a nuance to the compromises that must be reached which displays a winning warmth for the push and pull of families.

Ayub Khan Din's award-winning East is East was first performed on the stage all the way back in 1996, becoming an acclaimed feature film three years later and even spawning a fine follow-up movie West is West.
It returns to London with a new cast as part of Jamie Lloyd's second Trafalgar Transformed series, with Ayub himself taking on the role of patriarch George 'Genghis' Khan. Its themes are as potent as ever, as wars in former colonies continue to bubble and Ukip weasels its way in to our leaders' debates.
Set in '70s Salford, first-generation immigrant George is married to white Englishwoman Ella (Jane Horrocks). He owns a chip shop run with the help of Ella's friend Auntie Annie (Sally Bankes). His son Nazir has flown the nest under a cloud, running off to be a hairdresser in Eccles.
Also at the shop are the six kids...

In 1999 Damien O'Donnell directed East is East, a hilarious tragic-comedy based on Ayub Khan-Din's play about the marriage between proud Lancastrian Ella (Linda Bassett) and proud Pakistani George (Om Puri) running a chip shop in 1972 Salford and coping with their increasingly estranged sons. It wasn't exactly subtle, but the deeply disappointing sequel, set largely in a village in 1976 Pakistan, where Om Puri takes his youngest son, the 15-year-old Sajid, is crude and sentimental. Bassett and Puri are as good as ever, and there's a truthful, deeply affecting scene in which Ella meets the wife whom George deserted 30 years earlier. But the film is broad, evasive and oppressively feelgood in tone, an affair over which veils should be drawn.

Irish writer and director Paul Fraser is comfortable working with non-actors and using improvisation to get great performances, thanks to his work as a writer with the likes of Shane Meadows and Damien O'Donnell. But when it came time to make his feature directing debut, Fraser gave himself the added challenge of directing three boys, all of them newcomers to the screen who didn't just shoot most of their scenes inside a cramped bread van, but had to act like brothers all the while. The wonderful thing about My Brothers isn't just that the family relationship worked, but is the linchpin of Fraser's tender and lovely film. Last week I talked to Fraser and his three lead actors-- Timmy Creed, Paul Courtney and T.J. Griffin-- and Fraser told me it was less important to find non-actors than simply actors who could be honest onscreen. "From my point of views,...

Variety reports that Edgardo Mortara, based on the true story of a Jewish boy kidnapped by the pope in the mid-19th century, has been shut down in pre-production because of financing problems. The $20 million film, which was slated to star Anthony Hopkins and Javier Bardem, was shut down after Germany's Senator Film backed out on its commitment to co-finance the picture. The producers and Miramax Films were unable to reach a new agreement for North American distribution rights, which Miramax was to take. The cast and crew, who are hoping for a speedy resolution of some kind, are still preparing locations in Rome and in a studio in Bucharest. Hopkins was to play Pope Pius IX, and Bardem the boy's father. Damien O'Donnell is attached to direct.
