Zátopek, David Ondricek’s biopic about multi-Olympic champion runner Emil Zátopek, become a box office champ in the Czech Republic when it released late last August and is also repping the country in the race for the International Feature Oscar.
The story sees Australian runner Ron Clarke (James Frecheville), after suffering a serious collapse during a major race, pay a visit to legendary Czech runner Zátopek (Vaclav Neuzil), who he believes might help him become a champion again. Over the course of Clarke’s visit, the film takes viewers back through the key moments in Zátopek’s life, including his tumultuous and passionate marriage to Olympic champion Dana Zátopková (Martha Issova).
Ondricek and his lead actors joined for Deadline’s Contenders Film: International awards-season event to discuss the genesis of the project and its resonance at home.

David Ondricek’s epic account of Olympic gold medalist and multiple record holder Emil Zatopek, who attained legendary status in the darkest days of the Czechoslovak communist regime, makes for a powerful opening film at this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
The director of “Whisper” and “In the Shadow,” who co-wrote the biopic with Alice Nellis and Jan P. Muchow, says the ambitious shoot, with detailed period depictions of five Olympic competitions for the star runner and the role of his gold medalist wife Dana, took 14 years to materialize and presented the challenge of capturing the gut-wrenching conflicts of a champion’s life under a system that forced upon him the role of socialist success symbol.
What was it about the life of Zatopek that drove your ideas while developing this story and how did you feel you finally found a way to crack the story?

The series is organized and curated by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, and will be running May 10 - June 3 at the Hammer Museum's Billy Wilder Theater. Closing the series is David Ondricek's brilliant neo-noir and Czech Oscar entry "In the Shadow," starring a top-notch Ivan Trojan as a detective in currency reform-era Prague investigating a mishandled burglary case. (Our Toh! review of the film is here; Ondricek was named by Variety as one of the directors to watch in 2013.) Both Jirasky and Ondricek will be in person at the fest. You can buy tickets via the UCLA Film & Television Archive site.

On the foreign side comes Australian Wayne Blair, director of the entertaining Cannes selection "The Sapphires," backed by the Weinstein Co.; David Ondricek, whose gorgeous noir "In the Shadow" is the Czech Republic's Oscar entry; and Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, the directing duo behind Norway's enjoyable high-seas adventure Oscar submission "Kon-Tiki" (our review is here). Update: The official list has been revealed and the total is a record 71 movies. I have updated the list directly below or you can check it out here. The original article follows. I have been tracking the Oscar Foreign Language submissions again this year, as I have for the past several years, and it looks like we finally have a full field as I expect we will be seeing an official press release from the Academy some time this week. This year we have five more submissions already over last year as the total has now reached 68 submissions compared to last year's 63. This, despite, Iran boycotting the Oscars this year due to the anti-Islam film Innocence of Muslims, which has sparked so much controversy as of late. To reach the total of 68 films I have just finished adding 16 more titles to the list from the following countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina,...

To siphon out front-runners is never easy in this category, though there are a few that stick out immediately.

Anurag Basu’s Barfi to compete with Michael Haneke’s “Amour” and Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta”
Anurag Basu’s “Barfi” might have lured the selectors at home but it’s unlikely to have an easy ride ahead. Basu will have to compete against the veterans like Michael Haneke who took home a second Palme d’Or at Cannes this year for his “Amour” (Official Austrian Entry). Closer home in Asia, Korean Master Kim Ki-duk will also pose an equal threat to the Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer Barfi. Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta” clinched the Golden Lion at Venice this year.
“Barfi” was declared official Oscar entry from India on Saturday night by the Film Federation of India. Other Indian films which were in race included Milan Luthria’s The Dirty Picture, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Paan Singh Tomar, Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani, Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur Parts I and II,...

Marrakech International Film Festival
MARRAKECH, Morocco -- Grandhotel is a quirky tale about a hotel in the Czech Republic where one does not see the guests at all but rather its staff. An apt movie that is sure to endear itself to a discerning festival crowd, but too experimental for others, Grandhotel is set in the northern city of Liberec and among the nearby Jizerske mountains.
Jaroslav Rudis, Pavel Jech's script focuses primarily on the hotel's handyman, Fleischman (Marek Taclik), who is also an amateur meteorologist desperate to get close to the skies. He is sewing a hot air balloon to take him up, up and away, but if he does not vanish into the clouds, it because the chambermaid, Ilja (Klara Issova), loves him and drags him down to terra firma. But she has a problem in her jealous boyfriend and arrogant waiter, Patka (Jaroslav Plesl).
Though Fleischman believes that a person belongs to the place he is born, he dreams of running away from European boredom. Among his co-workers are the sex-starved receptionist Jegr (Jaromir Dulava), clumsy hotel help Zuzana (Dita Zabranska) and bitter German World War II veteran Franz (Ladislav Mrkvicka). It is only when beautiful Ilja comes into Fleischman's life that things begin to brighten.
Director David Ondricek spins a yarn that is great to look at but lacks emotional punch. Often the characters appear distant from each other, and the chemistry between Fleischman and Ilja is not hot enough. Taclik is fussy, if that can be called somewhat appealing. Issova's eyes are mesmeric, even though she does not ooze enough sex, leaving one wondering what exactly caught Fleischman's eye. Richard Rericha's photography is wonderful, adding a warm glow to the images and the striking cloud movements. The film's sound design by Pavel Rejholec and music by Jan P. Muchow won the country's Oscar equivalent, the Czech Lion.

MOSCOW -- Organizers of the Cottbus festival, the world's leading festival of Eastern European film, said Thursday that the new wave of Czech films produced since the collapse of communism will be celebrated at this year's event. The Cottbus festival's 14th edition, to take place Nov. 2-6 at the town near Berlin, Germany, will feature a special focus called New Czech Cinema: The Velvet Generation, which will be a retrospective of films made in the Czech Republic since 1989. The new generation of Czech filmmakers -- which includes Oscar winner Jan Sverak (who selected and will present the retrospective), Petr Zelenka, Sasha Gedeon, Jan Hrebejk and David Ondricek -- were "particularly significant" to the transition of the film industry in Europe's postcommunist countries, festival director Roland Rust said.
