The Drama Desk Awards — commonly known as the theater world’s Golden Globes, though nominees are represented across all NYC productions in a season — are the last precursor to the Tony Awards (check EW.com tomorrow morning for a full list of those). And judging by the list below, it’s going to be quite a competitive year, with some pretty heavy-hitters mixed in with longshots, not to mention some major snubs (Alan Cumming, Cyndi Lauper, Fiona Shaw, Chaplin’s Rob McClure to name a few). The winners will be announced at NYC’s Town Hall on May 19. Below is...

The first entry in the fall season — Chaplin: the Musical, a biographical musical about cinema great Charlie Chaplin — has officially opened on Broadway, and the reviews are in. The New York Times, Variety Magazine and The New York Post all say basically the same thing: The show is trite and cliched, but when it gets things right, it really gets it right.
These reviews agree that the best part of the show is Rob McClure‘s leading performance. McClure is able to capture Chaplin’s physicality, particularly his trademark duck walk. Even if the show moves too fast for McClure to flesh Chaplin out fully, McClure comes across as entirely likeable. When this show premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in California, McClure was an unknown and is now likely to garner himself his first Tony nomination — he may even take home the prize.

Adele's "21" closes in on record sales of 10 million: "Combined, '21' has sold 9.5 million copies in 15 months, putting it just 500,000 copies shy of the magical 10 million-mark. That’s unheard of in today’s music business. To put that figure in perspective, consider that the most recent album to cross the 10 million sales threshold was Usher’s 'Confession,' which only broke that barrier this year. 'Confessions' was released eight years ago, in 2004! In fact, overall album sales for the first half of 2012 were down 3.2 percent, according to Nielsen Soundscan, as fans buy fewer and fewer albums — probably in favor of streaming and other forms of entertainment away from music." Reuters Tony-winning costume designer Martin Pakledinaz dies: "Two-time Tony Award winner Martin Pakledinaz, who designed hundreds of costumes for stars such as Sutton Foster and Patti LuPone, has died, his agent said Monday. The 2012 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning by Kristin Chenoweth and Jim Parsons, with the musicals leading the pack. "Once" -- adapted from the popular indie film -- came out on top with 11 nominations, The Gershwins' "Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It," both also musicals, trailed close behind with 10 a piece, and "Follies" and "Newsies" took a respectable eight each.
"Peter and the Starcatcher" picked up nine nominations, the most for a play, edging out this year's closest thing to a favorite, Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman," which gained seven. Philip Seymour Hoffman predictably earned a nod for his turn as Willy Loman in "Salesman," alongside fellow big names James Earl Jones ("The Best Man") and John Lithgow ("The Columnist"). Ricky Martin's divisive portrayal of Che in "Evita" got no love. "Evita," however, did snatch three nods, including one for best revival of a musical.

Here’s the easiest prediction we can make about this year’s Tony Awards, which will be presented June 12 at NYC’s Beacon Theatre: Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark will be a recurring punchline for returning host Neil Patrick Harris. New York, New York (X17online) - This year's Tony Award nominations are out, and Daniel Radcliffe, Robin Williams, James Earl Jones and Ben Stiller are absent from them. Musical The Book of Mormon swept the nominations with 14. Actors including Al Pacino, Vannessa Redgrave, Edie Falco and Frances McDormand all scored nominations, while Daniel Radcliffe, Ben Stiller and Robin Williams did not. Radcliffe won rave reviews for his performance in the revival of the Tony-winning play How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The production itself was nominated eight times this year. The Book of Mormon, written by the creators of South Park, won at the box office despite its lack of big-name actors in the cast. Williams, had he won a Tony, would have been the eleventh actor ever to win a Grammy, Tony, Emmy and Oscar. Alas, he was not nominated. Stiller was starring in The House of Blue Leaves.

Here’s the easiest prediction to make about this year’s Tony Awards, which will be presented June 13 at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall: Host Sean Hayes will almost certainly make some reference to the hullabaloo about being too gay to play a straight man in the musical Promises, Promises. (There’s talk that the show will open with a medley of “pop songs you might not know are on Broadway.

One has to hand it to the Tony nominators: They didn't follow conventional wisdom nor did they particularly pay heed to commercial considerations.
Indeed, some of the biggest noms went to shows that are either long gone ("Ragtime," "Finian's Rainbow," "In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play," "Time Stands Still") or lagging at the boxoffice ("Fela!" "Memphis," "Next Fall," "Million Dollar Quartet").
The biggest surprises Tuesday were the omissions.
"The Addams Family," the most successful new musical of the season, was thoroughly dissed, failing to get noms for best musical, for its stars Nathan Lane or Bebe Neuwirth, or even for its production design. And though it did get one for original score, that's not exactly a coup in a season in which only one other musical, "Memphis," even had one. The category had to be embarrassingly filled out with the forgettable music from "Enron" and Branford Marsalis' incidental music for "Fences.
