Politics in Argentina are volatile. The 20th century brought six coups and restrictions on democracy were not lifted until 1983. Daniela Goggi’s (“Abzurdah”) latest “The Rescue” (“El Rapto”) is set in this transitional period, where a hangover of deep corruption still remains.
It stars “Money Heist’s” Rodrigo de la Serna, hit Paramount+ Nov. 3 and now plays in main competition at the Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival.
Produced by Paramount Television International Studios, Rei Cine (“The Settlers”) and Infinity Hill, it shows Paramount’s continued global ambitions in Spanish-language originals.
“At our studio, we always seek to create high-quality content with great partners and remarkable talent, in front of and behind the camera, to create local stories with universal appeal that will cross borders and conquer global audiences,” said Dario Turovelzky, EVP Broadcast & Studios at Latam Paramount Global.
“‘El Rapto’ (‘The Rescue’) is an outstanding example of this ongoing creative pursuit.

Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks, led by CEO Guido Rud, has pounced on world sales rights to Lucia Puenzo’s “Los Impactados” on the eve of the American Film Market (AFM) where it will kick off sales.
Delving into the theme of rebirth in the face of profound trauma, “Los Impactados” follows Ada, portrayed by Mariana Di Girólamo (Pablo Larraín’s “Ema” ), whose unusual journey begins when she is struck by lightning, leading her on a fascinating transformation alongside a mysterious doctor, played by Germán Palacios, the lead from “El Último Hereje.” Along the way, she forms a bond with a group of fellow survivors who find themselves increasingly captivated by the power of electricity.
In an earlier interview with Variety, Puenzo, who co-wrote the screenplay with Lorena Ventimiglia, said she was intrigued by “the possibility that something as random as lightning could strike us with the force of a nuclear reactor,...

In cinematic terms, regime change lends itself to a full stop or climax. It’s often used by filmmakers as a conclusion. Revolution is typically portrayed as the final act that the struggle has been building toward, as the old ways are swept aside in favor of a new and presumably glorious future. Stickier and typically more difficult to dramatize is the long, slow “what now?,” where a country begins the process of building new systems.
“The Rescue,” from writer-director Daniela Goggi, is set during the 1980s, after the reintroduction of democracy to Argentina, following the collapse of the military junta which ruled the country with an iron first after the 1976 coup against Isabel Perón. In “The Rescue,” the old regime has notionally been dispersed, but in practice, rooting out corruption and renewing a governance culture rife with human rights abuses is very much an ongoing work in progress.

A.K. Tolstoy’s A Taste of Blood, not be confused with the recent Canadian cannibal film of the same name, or H.G. Lewis’s 1967 splatter epic, is a new vampire film based on an old story, Tolstoy’s 1839 short story “The Family Of The Vourdalak” to be exact. It’s been filmed a few times over the years, most notably as a segment of Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath starring Boris Karloff.
This version, shot in Argentina under the title Sangre Vurdalak was filmed by writer/director Santiago Fernández Calvete. His credits include The Second Death and Intimate Witness, as well as co-writing the recent release The Exorcism of God. Can his experience working in the genre make A Taste of Blood easy to swallow?

“Fever dream” has lately become an overused term in film marketing and criticism alike, often generically applied to anything faintly strange or surreal with fractured storytelling trickery and a lick of gauzy ambience. As a title for the latest feature from Peruvian director Claudia Llosa, it serves a similarly loose, woolly purpose, despite not being particularly apt: A psychological thriller in which two mothers fear their children’s souls have gone adrift, the film’s narrative unfolds less as fever dream than waking nightmare, though its hazy, sunstruck styling lends it a certain somnambulant quality.
As with Argentine writer Samanta Schweblin’s celebrated source novel — co-adapted by the author with Llosa — the film’s original Spanish title is rather more evocative. Translating as “The Rescue Distance,” referring to the protagonist’s constant mental calculations as to how long it would take her to reach her daughter in an emergency, it...

Written and directed by popular Argentine genre filmmaker Santiago Fernandez Calvete, “Vurdalak Blood,” based on Alexi Tolstoy’s short story “The Family of the Vourdalak,” is screening in works in progress version at this year’s Ventana Sur Blood Window genre sidebar.
“Vurdalak Blood” takes place in the uncertain hours after a vampire hunt when it’s unclear if the hunter has himself been turned into a creature of the night. Will his family find out in time, or will their sentiment make them easy prey for the novice nightwalker? Natalia, his teenage daughter, ends up proving that her father has become a vampire just when her brother is abandoning her to her fate and the night threatens to arrive.
Fernandez’s film is produced by Aramos Cine, headed by Roxana Ramos and co-produced with Córdoba-based Jaque Content. As a project it received two production awards, one from Incaa and...

Despondent and lashing out after the recent death of his mother, teenager Nahuel (Lautaro Bettoni) is sent to stay for a while with his estranged biological father, Ernesto (Germán Palacios), who lives and works as a hunting guide in the Patagonia Region with a whole new family. It’s here where the two men will get to know each other and hopefully find some common ground. By now you’re probably thinking that Hunting Season (Temporada de Caza) sounds awfully familiar, and you’re not wrong; father-and-son-bonding stories have been told in movies time and time again. But it’s the details that matter, and first-time filmmaker/writer Natalia Garagiola gets a lot of them right, starting with her picturesque setting. The gorgeously photographed Patagonian wilderness is the type of...

It is the first time the Paris-based auteur film specialist Pyramide has handled sales on a TV series.
