Singer Neha Kakkar has heaped praise on a 12-year-old ‘Superstar Singer 3’ contestant Atharv Bakshi on his rendition of the song ‘Teri Aankhon Ke Siwa’ from the film ‘Chirag’, saying he has a striking resemblance to Arijit Singh.
In the grand premiere, Atharv from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand captivated everyone with his performance on ‘Teri Aankhon Ke Siwa’ from the 1969 film ‘Chirag’, starring Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh.
The song is originally sung by Mohammed Rafi.
Talking about the performance, judge Neha said: “When you sing, it feels like the whole world stops to listen. Your voice brings a touch of magic in the air, making everything around us beautiful. It’s like witnessing a performance by a true music legend. The way you control your pauses with such clarity at such a young age is nothing short of extraordinary; it’s like watching something magical.”

Music composer Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame, has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, not only as a celebration of his musical prowess, but also in acknowledgment of his role in defining the golden era of Hindi film music.
The octogenarian learnt the basics of music from his father, the renowned trumpeteer of his time, Ramprasad ‘Babaji’ Sharma. He then aced the violin under the guidance of the Goan musician Anthony Gonsalves, whom he went on to immortalise in the song ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves’, which was picturised on Amitabh Bachchan (who also contributed to the vocals) in the 1977 film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’.
Pyarelal teamed up with Laxmikant Kudalkar and they worked in more than 750 Hindi films between 1963 to 1998. They collaborated with the biggest names of the industry, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra.

Merry Christmas
Starring Katrina Kaif, Vijay Sethupathi
Directed by Sriram Raghavan
Yadhoom is the home-made whiskey that Albert’s uncle, played by Tinu Anand , recommends as the spirit of the season: create your own yadhoom and have a good time in life.
This is what Sriram Raghavan does. His yadhoom may not match with yours. But heck, life is what you make of it. Merry Christmas is not a merry film. Come to think of it, it is not even Christmassy. Albert (Vijay Sethupathi) and Maria (Katrina Kaif) are two wistful souls who collide on Christmas eve in neon-lit Bombay (this is when Mumbai was Bombay) in the 1970s when , Rajesh Khanna, Shakti Samanta’s Aradhana and Kati Patang and R D Burman ruled the charts.

2023 is coming to an end, but what is it, even a life without any lows or a little bit of bickering? So even this year, there were a lot of celebrities who landed themselves in controversy by saying or doing the wrong things. Be it Asha Parekh calling out The Kashmir Files team, asking them how much they contributed to Kashmiris from the 400 crores they’ve made from the film, or be it Kangana Ranaut dropping her opinions about everything and anything.
Ameesha Patel grabbed headlines talking about her sour relationship with Gadar director Anil Sharma while she also confessed that Kareena Kapoor Khan was asked to leave Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.
Many of these controversies shocked the internet, while others were resolved over time. Some of these controversies seemed totally unnecessary, while others had an impact on fans,...

Tiger Vs Pathaan’s Dhaasu Reunion To Deepika Padukone’s Draupadi – Here’s Our Wishlist For Santa Claus On Bollywood’s Behalf ( Photo Credit – Instagram; IMDb )
It has been a Merry Christmas for the newly released films Dunki and Salaar at the box office, and while everyone had their Santa lists ready, even we had our wishlist ready on behalf of Bollywood. This list included the fate of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone, and others.
While we wished for big box office numbers, we also wished for better films. Overall, we wished for a better and bigger year for Cinema in 2024. But we went a little overboard with our list, and this was one greedy list we handed over to Santa Claus last night.
While we’ve asked a lot of things, we have been very specific in our demands – right from the golden number at the box...

New Delhi, Sep 26 (Ians) One of Hindi films’ most talented and versatile actresses – and still going strong, the exquisite and enchanting Waheeda Rehman, who caps a remarkable stint with the prestigious Dadasahab Phalke Award, carved out a niche with confident renditions of unconventional roles, including some very bold for the era – and could have spelled doom to her career.
Starting with Telugu and Tamil films in 1955 before switching over to Hindi cinema the following year, she did the usual roles expected of Hindi film actresses but also went on to play a prostitute, a gangster’s moll, a nautanki actress, a woman who walks out of a marriage without regrets, et al – but with such innate grace that she has always been a byword for refined sensibility.
Born in fairly comfortable circumstances – her father was a Deputy Commissioner – on February 3, 1939 in what was Chingalpet town of the Madras Presidency, Waheeda...

Revered Indian actor Waheeda Rehman has been accorded the Dadasaheb Phalke award, India’s highest film honor.
The award is given for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema and is named after Phalke, director of “Raja Harischandra” (1913), India’s first full-length feature, who is considered the father of Indian cinema.
Rehman, the 85-year-old grande dame of Indian cinema has worked with most of the legendary filmmakers of her country during her career and the roles she chose were in films that are considered classics in the annals of Indian cinema. She worked with Guru Dutt in “Pyaasa” (1957) and “Kaagaz Ke Phool” (1959), Satyajit Ray in “Abhijaan” (1962), Basu Bhattacharya in “Teesri Kasam” (1966) and Yash Chopra in “Kabhie Kabhie” (1976), among many other memorable roles.
But it is her role as Rosie in Vijay Anand’s “Guide” (1965) that Rehman remembers with the greatest fondness. “When I signed ‘Guide’ more than 50 years ago, my friends told...

Three-fourth of his 88-year-long life was spent in acting and of these, six and a half decades, over half, had Dev Anand playing the lead (romantic) role, even as his peers and even several of his leading ladies had moved on or out. In the process, Dev Anand ended up being paired against at least three generations of heroines, if not four, as he transitioned from his early days where his female co-lead was the bigger star to a time when most actresses were keen on working with him as he sauntered from success to success with that charming demeanour and the winning smile.
While most of his early heroines, say, Kamla Kotnis, who was cast against him in his debut “Hum Ek Hai” (1946), Kamini Kaushal, the heroine of his first hit “Ziddi” (1948), Khursheed Bano or Nimmi or Shakila will only be familiar to hardcore film buffs or movie historians,...

If India ever had a star, it was Dev Anand. He was the mould in which subsequent generations of stars were cast. Dev Anand was born Dharamdev on September 26, 1923, in the Shakargarh tehsil of Gurdaspur district of Punjab. His father Pishori Lal Anand was a successful advocate and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Dev, the third of four brothers, graduated with English Honours from Government College, Lahore. He moved over to Bombay to join his older brother Chetan, who was trying to get a break in films.
Both brothers got involved in the progressive Indian People’s Theatre Association (Ipta). Chetan made ‘Neecha Nagar’ in 1946 and went on to win the Grand Prix at the inaugural Cannes film festival.

Intrinsically talented, both, separately and jointly, gave a new direction to Hindi film music. But to achieve this, Asha Bhosle and Rahul Dev Burman had to surmount a major “hurdle” – creating a new identity distinct from their illustrious and established kin: elder sibling Lata Mangeshkar and father Sachin Dev Burman.
And both succeeded – with a combination of luck, support, their own undeniable virtuosity, and above all, their first joint effort.
AshaBhosle – who is still going strong at 90, having worked with four generations of music composers from O P Nayyar to A R Rehman – added a sensuous allure and element of forthrightness for the Hindi film heroine, without becoming risque or boisterous, even as Burman adroitly used pop and jazz to good effect in electrifying film music – bringing the age of Elvis Presley and the Beatles to India.

Actress Wamiqa Gabbi’s character in ‘Jubilee’ is a tribute to actresses from that golden era, like Madhubala, Nargis, and others.
Wamiqa said: “I play the role of Niloufer Qureshi, an aspiring actress through the 1940’s and 50’s. She is unapologetically ambitious and willing to go the lengths to make it big. My research was completely based on all the actresses from that era, like Madhubala, Nargis, Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rahman, Geeta Bali, Mumtaz, Mala Sinha.”
“I was extremely conscious of not imitating any of them but to create something of my own. This is my little homage to them to embrace their grace and perhaps try to recreate the memories of that elegant period of cinema.”
The series stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Aparshakti Khurana, Aditi Rao Hydari, Ram Kapoor in pivotal roles. The series is created and directed by Vikramaditya Motwane.

Holi has a special place among all Indian festivals given that it blurs differences and brings out the vibrant side of people. The festival is about colours clubbed with fun and masti, there’s no denying that good music is an integral part of the celebration.
Bollywood has many of them to offer to make your Holi celebrations more vibrant, colourful and unforgettable.
As the nation gets drenched in the colours of Holi, here are some of the songs that need to be on your Holi playlist to kick the Fomo:
1. ‘Rang Barse’: “Ah, I see you’re a man (or a woman) of culture as well,” is the reaction you will draw from your fellow Holi mates if you boost the speakers with this track. A classic, rather a timeless one that can instantly set the mood of the festival, ‘Rang Barse’, from the film ‘Silsila’ and sung...

Veteran actress Asha Parekh recalled getting infected with typhoid during the shoot of her films ‘Teesri Manzil’ and ‘Baharon Ke Sapne’. Despite her illness, she continued to shoot until one day she fainted on the sets.
Asha said: “I was shooting for two different movies at the same time, during those days, I used to shoot for ‘Teesri Manzil’ in the day-time, and at night, for ‘Baharon Ke Sapne’. Since I was working round the clock, I got infected with typhoid, however, I still insisted on doing the shoot because a grand set was created for the song.”
Asha started working at a very early age and legendary director Bimal Roy cast her in his film, ‘Maa’ at the age of 10. Though she got some recgnition as a child actor, establishing herself as an actress was not easy and she faced rejections before the 1959 film ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ with Shammi Kapoor.

When out at the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) naturally we gravitated towards new releases to get a sense for the contemporary landscape of the industry on the sub-continent, though while we were there we had our attentions diverted to the retrospective section showing old classics as the idea of sitting back and watching a classic Bollywood production felt a fitting way to spend our time in Goa.
At the Iffi, the retrospective shows off work of the latest recipient of the hugely prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award, working as something of a lifetime contribution to the industry, and this year it fell into the deserving lap of 80-year-old Asha Parekh. On the evening her film Kati Patang (1970) – which won her a Filmfare award for Best Actress, we had the immense pleasure of sitting down for a few moments, for a UK exclusive with the venerable actress, to talk about her latest honour,...

As the UK readies itself for a bitterly cold winter, we had the immense pleasure of being whisked away to the sub-continent, as a guest as the annual International Film of Festival of India to spend a week indulging and celebrating cinema that this film-crazy nation has to offer.
The 53rd edition, which took place in Goa, ran between the 20th to the 28th of November, and had an eclectic array of films, spotlighting Indian productions and filmmakers, as well a films from around the world, with a focus on French cinema, and Israeli content in particular – and what transpired was an impressive and compelling programme.
During our visit during the latter half of the festival, we saw a couple of contemporary productions, kicking things off with the visually striking period drama Qala, a Netflix production which has made its way to the streaming platform just this week. It’s...

Along with expressions and mannerisms, it is the voice that makes a successful actor. But there are times where the film may demand that the performer just use facial expressions and body language, without any words, to emote – and that can test their calibre. Blessed with a resounding baritone – and a fine singing voice too, Amitabh Bachchan was several times called to demonstrate his prowess in this respect – and never disappointed.
Manoj Kumar described his voice as “a mellow whisper, sounding like the murmurs of a thundery cloud” at their first meeting in September 1967, when Amitabh arrived in Bombay to try his luck in the film industry, the first film that he got – “Reshma aur Shera” (1971) had portrayed him as mute.
This, as per director and producer Sunil Dutt – who fulfilled his promise of giving him a break – and writer Ali Raza, was to evoke greater audience sympathy for him.

By numbers, her work in the Hindi film industry seems quite scanty — at 33 films in around a decade and a half. But the statistics fail to reveal that, save around five, all were box-office hits, and some of them broke new ground, making her one of the most popular and successful actresses of all times — and a fashion icon too.
Though she struck gold right from her debut as female lead, and went on to become an “in demand” actress for everything, from frothy romances to tear-jerkers, Sadhana is most remembered for her trademark hairstyle — the famous “Sadhana cut” of fringes or short bangs (itself inspired by the elfin and charming Audrey Hepburn) — and pioneering form-fitting kurtas and churidar pyjamas.
But in her comparatively limited outings, Sadhana, who was born on this day in 1941, showcased her acting prowess. She could essay roles of a rich heiress to a village belle...
