When we think of the greatest actors who opted to retire, there are really so few that ended on a high note. Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread is the first one that comes to mind, but who else would even be close? Unfortunately, it isn’t Gene Hackman, who left Hollywood after a 40+ year on the screen following 2004’s Welcome to Mooseport…which is just about the most embarrassing way to cap off such a legendary career. Then again, maybe it’s just the sort of movie that would make you want to retire.
By the time filming began on what would be his last movie, Gene Hackman was in his mid-70s and had seen enough in the business to know who was competent and, well, who would be directing Welcome to Mooseport. As co-star Maura Tierney remembered, Hackman and Donald Petrie did not get along at all when making the movie.

Donald Petrie's "Grumpy Old Men" was released in theaters on Christmas Day in 1993, serving as that year's "take your parents to see it" film. Prior to "Grumpy Old Men," the film's two stars, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, had appeared in five films together, including "The Fortune Cookie," Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple," "Kotch," "The Front Page," and "Buddy Buddy." The two were so well known for their chemistry, they were often considered one of comedy's great, prevailing duos. To this day, they are often mentioned together, and the two are buried not too far apart in the same cemetery in Westwood, CA.
While Lemmon and Matthau worked together regularly throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, there was a notable gap in their shared résumé. From 1981 until 1993, the pair did not work in tandem — even though they both appeared in Oliver Stone's 1991 film, "JFK," they had no scenes together.

Many rom-com fans can likely agree that How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days wouldn’t be the same without Kate Hudson’s “Benny boo-boo” lines or her cover of “You’re So Vain.” She and Matthew McConaughey had an electric chemistry that made the movie one of the most iconic romantic comedies to this day. How to Lose a Guy even led Hudson and McConaughey to co-star in another film, Fool’s Gold, a few years later.
And yet, the earliest plans for How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days didn’t include Hudson as the leading lady. Here’s who was the first choice to play Andie Anderson and how the part ended up going to Hudson. Plus, how Hudson helped seal the deal on McConaughey.

The premise was simple enough: A no-nonsense, non-conformist, feminine “guy’s girl” journalist sets out to make a man fall in love with her — all for the sake of a big break at work. When “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” hit theaters on February 7, 2003, the Kate Hudson- and Matthew McConaughey-starring romantic comedy ushered in a new generation of a revived rom-com sub-genre: quippy romances all about female journalists.
In the Donald Petrie film, Andie Anderson (Hudson) half-jokingly pitches the idea of using all the “what not to do” tips of Composure, the Cosmo-esque fastest growing women’s magazine she works at, to prove the opposite: being disinterested and not clingy works better to land a husband, or better yet, find true love. Kathryn Hahn is her unlucky-in-love coworker whose exploits inspire Andie’s approach to a new lifestyle feature article, while Bebe Neuwirth is her...

It’s officially been 20 years since Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey schemed each other into a romance in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. There have been mumblings of a modern remake, but what about a How to Lose a Guy sequel with the original cast? Here’s what the director and stars have said.

Kate Hudson has shared her thoughts on whether there will eventually be a follow-up film to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
The 2003 romcom stars Hudson and Matthew McConaughey as lovebirds who enter a relationship under false pretences.
Andie (Hudson) is a journalist writing an article on making a romantic interest disappear, while advertising executive Ben (McConaughey) dates her in order to help land a diamond campaign at work. However, sparks fly despite their professional agendas.
The Donald Petrie-directed film eventually made more than 105m (£85.8m) at the US box office and has since become a favourite of the romantic comedy genre.
To celebrate 20 years since its cinematic release, Hudson and some other cast and crew members gathered for a Vanity Fair feature to look back at its impact.

Breaking through at 50 miles per hour, Sandra Bullock hasn’t slowed down since “Speed.” Although the veteran performer’s first acting credit belongs to a minor part in the 1987 thriller “Hangmen” (which she’d follow up with a handful of straight-to-video releases and TV projects), Bullock didn’t become a household name among movie lovers until the mid ’90s.
After dazzling audiences and the box office as bus-jumping hero Annie Porter in the 1994 smash hit “Speed” opposite Keanu Reeves, Bullock was regularly cast in action-packed suspense flicks and lighter rom-com fare. She’d lead in both Jon Turteltaub’s charming romance “While You Were Sleeping” and Irwin Winkler’s cybercrime thriller “The Net” in 1995. The following year, she’d star in rom-com “Two If By Sea,” legal drama “A Time to Kill,” and historical novel adaption “In Love and War.” Of course, the future two-time Academy Award nominee (one time winner) was just getting started.

It's a tale as old as time: Lucky girl meets boy. Girl kisses boy. Boy accidentally steals girl's luck. So, that's not exactly a story as classic as, say Beauty and the Beast, but it does date back all the way to 2006 when Just My Luck was released. Fresh off of her breakout role in Mean Girls, an 18-year-old Lindsay Lohan starred as the most fortunate woman alive who loses her luck when she falls for Chris Pine at a masquerade ball. You know, as one does. The rom-com-gone-wrong was directed by Donald Petrie, who was coming off of a hot streak with How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Miss Congeniality. Quibi has set its latest two projects in development — a modern take on Paramount’s 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, from Paramount Television, and a vampire drama from writer Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys) and executive produced by David Katzenberg, from 20th Century Fox TV.
Written by Guy Branum (The Mindy Project), the reimagined How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days follows a glib young online columnist and an oversexed advertising executive who both need to prove, once and for all, that they’re capable of being monogamous. They soon discover, however, keeping a relationship is harder than Andie Anderson made it look.
The 2003 film directed by Donald Petrie, starred Kate Hudson as Anderson and Matthew McConaughey.
Further details on the series are yet to be announced.
Branum, creator and host of truTV’s Talk Show the Game Show, was a supervising producer for Comedy Central’s The Other Two.

Ann-Margret played the neighbor and Donald Petrie directed it. They haven’t gotten as far as figuring out who’ll play opposite Murphy, but I have heard Samuel L. Jackson’s name as an inspired idea. He and Story just wrapped Shaft.
Story will produce through his The Story Company banner, and The Story Company’s Sharla Sumpter Bridgett is also producing. Story has directed eight studio features and he became the first...

Classic tropes found in the romantic comedies of the 2000s resurface in the official trailer for Little Italy.
Donald Petrie, known for rom-com favorites Miss Congeniality (2000) and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), returns to the genre to direct Emma Roberts and Hayden Christensen, who star as love interests at the center of a family rivalry.
Roberts plays Nikki Angioli, a chef living abroad who begrudgingly returns home to deal with visa-related issues she must sort through to receive a promotion.
Nikki's native New York neighborhood is home to her large, meddling Italian family and their pizza business....

"Little Italy is not big enough for me and you!" Lionsgate has debuted the first official trailer for a cheesy romantic comedy titled Little Italy, the latest from veteran filmmaker Donald Petrie. This film has such a cheesy concept, the kind that makes you roll your eyes it's just so awful. Here's what Little Italy is about: a young couple must navigate a blossoming romance, amidst a war between their families' competing pizza restaurants. Emma Roberts and Hayden Christensen star, along with Alyssa Milano, Danny Aiello, and Andrea Martin. This definitely looks as terrible as it sounds, complete with cliche rain scenes, a cook off (of course), scooter riding, and more ridiculousness. Avoid this film at all costs. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Donald Petrie's Little Italy, direct from YouTube: A delicious new comedy topped ...

When they were crafting a screenplay for 2005’s franchise-rebooting Batman Begins, writer David S. Goyer and director Christopher Nolan drew heavily on such DC-published titles as Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One as well as Batman: The Long Halloween and “The Man Who Falls” from Secret Origins. But a new YouTube video suggests that maybe the blockbuster’s biggest inspiration was something else entirely, something completely outside of the canon: 1994’s Richie Rich, directed by journeyman Donald Petrie and starring Macaulay Culkin as an impossibly wealthy child.
The video, “24 Reasons Batman Begins & Richie Rich Are The Same Movie,” comes to us courtesy the YouTube channel Couch Tomato, which specializes in comparing films point by point and discussing their similarities and differences. Its series 24 Reasons is devoted to the former. “All movies are the same,” the channel claims, “so you can’t hate a movie for ...

From writing Beverly Hills Cop to directing Toy Soldiers and Dawn Patrol, we have a chat with writer/producer/director Daniel Petrie Jr.
Daniel Petrie Jr comes from a family with movies in its blood.
His father, Daniel Petrie Sr, directed films such as Resurrection, Cocoon: The Return and A Raisin In The Sun. His mother, Dorothea, produced movies, wrote novels and acted. And then his brother, Donald Petrie, directed Cocoon: The Return, Miss Congeniality and Grumpy Old Men.
Yet Daniel Petrie Jr is just as busy. His screenplays include Turner & Hooch and Beverly Hills Cop (for which he earned an Academy Award nomination), whilst his directorial debut was the much-loved (by us especially) Toy Soldiers.
As his new film as director, Dawn Patrol (starring Scott Eastwood) lands on DVD, he spared us some time for a chat about his career. Starting with what he's up to right now.

Donald Petrie, the director of romantic comedies like Miss Congeniality, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Just My Luck, will helm the live action movie adaptation of the young adult fantasy books, "Avalon: Web of Magic." Let’s face it. We can’t hide it. We all have those movies that we like that others would shun. These are guilty pleasures: the ones that aren’t that great but we love for some reason or another. Here are mine. Be sure to list yours in the comments, if you’d like.
Last Action Hero (1993)
Rotten Tomatoes: 38%
Actors: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Austin O’Brien, F. Murray Abraham, Art Carney, Charles Dance
Director: John McTiernan/Writers: Shane Black and David Arnott
Here’s the thing: I will defend this movie’s concept till Doomsday. A movie about a kid with a magic ticket that gets pulled into an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie? Genius concept. Yes, the kid is annoying. Yes, the movie doesn’t reach the heights of a McTiernan/Black team-up as well as one might think. It’s interesting to note that McTiernan isn’t working as much...

Kurt here with a new Cinema de Gym, the first to focus on a movie I never knew existed before my cardio session. Is everyone familiar with Opportunity Knocks? It's a 1990 comedy noteworthy for being the breakout film for SNL alum Dana Carvey. With his straw-blonde hair styled into what I remember to be an almost-mullet, Carvey plays Eddie Farrell, a California con man whose slovenly style (oversized shirts, khakis with sneakers) is used to convey an enviably carefree outlook (as opposed to Steve Carrells's version of the same style in this week's Crazy, Stupid, Love., which is used to convey unenviable cluelessness). I entered the movie just as it was starting (another first), and got to see the unremarkable opening credits blip onto the screen as Carvey strutted down the street in his lazy dude's attire. There was no telling why he was carrying a potted plant.

Most people know film know the name Wes Anderson. He's a brilliant director who has influenced scores of films since he Bottle Rocket. And yet, the average box-office take of his six films is $21 million. Kevin Smith is an even more popular director. The average box-office of his nine films is $20 million. Martin Scorsese's average is $39 million. Woody Allen's average is $13 million. Danny Boyle's is $30 million. The Coen Brothers average around $45 million. David Lynch: $12.3 million. David Mamet: $6 million.
And yet, if you are a film fan, those are all names that you know. You probably know them well. You've probably seen some or most of their films. And yet, you probably have no idea who Steve Carr is. In the last decade, Carr has made 6 films. The box-office average of those six films is $80 million, better than the average of either Tony or Ridley Scott.

The Amigos, New Mexico's traveling band of goodwill ambassadors, came to Los Angeles on Wednesday offering up silver roadrunners for guests' lapels and a good-natured warning to filmmaking rivals.
"We're No. 3 in the U.S. behind California and New York, but we're taking over," Gov. Bill Richardson said during a cocktail reception at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills.
He noted that the state has brought in $3 billion worth of economic activity from productions during the past seven years. Recent projects include the Coen brothers' "True Grit" remake, Marvel's "Thor," USA's "In Plain Sight," AMC's "Breaking Bad" and the new ABC series "Scoundrels."
Lisa Strout, director of the New Mexico Film Office in Santa Fe, said the Land of Enchantment's goal is to become a production "satellite" to Hollywood and an economic engine for the state. New Mexico adopted its film production tax credit in 2002.
