Sandor Stern’s ‘Pin’ is an unsung ‘80s classic that tells a traumatic tale of a broken family that turns an unhealthy coping mechanism into a totem of terror.
“Have you heard from Leon?”
“No.”
“I miss him a great deal.”
“So do I.”
Horror’s “evil doll” sub-genre has never been more popular, but it’s been a lively area of terror for many decades now. There’s an instantly identifiable selling point to one of these stories where a mundane toy suddenly becomes a terrifying artifact. One of the more obscure entries in the evil doll sub-genre is 1988’s Pin, a disturbing tale of repressed pain, codependent family dynamics, and displaced identity that bears more in common with Psycho than Child’s Play. Pin, while refusing to limit itself to just one type of horror, delivers a memorable meditation on trauma that makes an even greater impact 35 years later.

Let’s take a minute and give thanks for the Mad Scientist. Like any other cinematic profession, there can be good and evil examples of both; some want to heal the world, others want to crush it. The Brain (1988) gives us a villain squarely in the latter camp, and he’s not even the head baddie (see: title). A modern day love letter to the genre, The Brain is weird enough for a passé crowd yet conventional enough to work as a straight up monster movie.
Given a limited release in its homeland in November, the achingly Canadian film was released stateside on video in December. Some critics appreciated the good-natured update to the schlocky sci-fi fests of yore; others did not, and to them I say they can’t all be Invasion of the Body Snatchers, bunky.
But by gum they can be fun; even though the seams threaten to burst at every turn,...

When Alfred Hitchcock made Psycho he had a lot to answer for, creating a character in Norman Bates that is so easy to replicate, though hard to perfect. Pin is a film that bears similarities to Hitchcock’s masterpiece and has a character that could be said to be just as twisted as Norman.
Ursula and Leon are the children of a doctor who, to communicate issues to his children uses a medical mannequin know as Pin to teach them about health and body issues. As the children grow up Ursula understands that Pin is not real, but her father uses ventriloquism to bring the doll alive, but Leon clings on to the belief that Pin is his best friend. We have new images in from the Carrie remake, and also a poster is very similar to the first poster we added for the Screen Gems horror remake which opens November 8th. Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass films, Let Me In) and Julianne Moore star where Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie starred in the original 1976 film. This really does look like an eerie film, judging from the trailer. Also on board the cast are Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Gabrielle Wilde, Alex Russell, Michelle Nolden, Max Toppline and Cynthia Preston. Carrie is based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, and helmed by Kimberly Peirce from the script by Lawrence D. Cohen and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I do believe director Kimberly Peirce is going for a “bloody” + “teenage girl” motif in the promotional materials for her upcoming remake of Brian DePalma’s “Carrie”, based on the novel of the same name by prolific horror author Stephen King. Gee, I wonder what all the blood has to do with growing up as a teenage girl… Anyways, here’s a new poster for “Carrie” (above), which according to reports, has now been moved from its March 15th, 2013 opening to a much friendlier October 18th, 2013 spot. This is unconfirmed by the studio, and the poster even still mentions the March opening date. Though I suppose it makes sense to send a teen drama/horror movie away from the very, very dangerous Summer schedule, filled with big-budget comic book movies and kid-friendly actioners. Starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer,...

You probably know the plot of the movie by now, but in case you don’t: A sheltered high school girl unleashes her newly developed telekinetic powers after she is pushed too far by her peers. Starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Gabriella Wilde, Alex Russell, Max Topplin, Portia Doubleday, Cynthia Preston, Connor Price, and setting the town...

See Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, director Kimberley Peirce and producer Kevin Mischer at the panel for Sony's Carrie at the 2012 New York Comic Con. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa adpats the script from the eerie Stephen KIng novel of the same title. The film opens March 15th, 2013 with a cast also including Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Gabriella Wilde, Alex Russell, MaxTopplin, Cynthia Preston, Connor Price and Zoe Belkin. Exclusive: Actor-comedian Pauly Shore, who had a reality show, Paid Vacation With Pauly Show, on Cmt, is back on the cable channel with a telefilm. The latest entry in Cmt’s original movie franchise established a year ago, is Whiskey Business, starring the 1990s comedy star, which will premiere on March 25. The film, produced by Entertainment One, centers on self-proclaimed “Guido,” Nicky Ferelli, (Shore) who runs away from his mob-tied family when he is wrongly accused of murder, and ends up hiding out in a small southern town making a new and unusual variety of moonshine, while discovering that a country way of life could be the best thing that ever happened to him. “It’s heartfelt, and playing a likeable ‘Guido’ is a throwback to the old Pauly fans know from my earlier movies,” Shore said. Whiskey Business co-stars John Schneider and Tanya Tucker and also features Cynthia Preston,...
