“Outer Range,” TV’s craziest sci-fi Western, is finally coming back for Season 2. On Monday, on the two-year anniversary of the series premiere, Prime Video dropped a trailer for the new season, which arrives on May 16.
“Outer Range” stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, a Wyoming rancher who is having problems holding on to his land and his family. One day, he finds a mysterious hole on his property that might be some sort of portal through time. So now he has another, even bigger problem.
According to Amazon, Season 2 “propels its characters deeper into the void with profound and unforeseen circumstances that could shake the very foundations of time itself.” The trailer is packed with wild imagery, like Autumn (Imogen Poots) eating some black mineral dust and then her eyes turning the same color, and even wilder dialogue, like Royal Abbott musing about how it’s impossible to know...

This article contains some Good Grief spoilers.
For the entirety of Good Grief, I couldn’t look away from Dan Levy’s sweater: that excellent cable-knit style popularized in recent films like Knives Out, yet here in a lovely dove gray unlike the usual preppy cream. It was also radically different from the black-and-white jumpers he modeled as David Rose in the dramedy Schitt’s Creek, establishing that queer character’s distinctive fashion sense in a uniform that would recur even with his emotional development. Yet it feels like a costuming through-line to Levy’s next memorable character, widower Marcus, in his feature debut as a writer-director.
Here the sweater signifies the very human desperation to hold on to something of the past, even when it brings us pain. As Marc learns through his own figurative unraveling after a year of grief, a memento like that doesn’t have to be...

Sometimes a song and a piece of fiction become entwined forever, ensuring that fans cannot think about one without the other: think of "Reservoir Dogs" and "Stuck in the Middle With You," "Grosse Point Blank" and "Blister in the Sun," "Shaun of the Dead" and "Don't Stop Me Now." Then there's the Canadian comedy series "Schitt's Creek" and its connection to the late, great Tina Turner's "The Best." The 1989 song is a big, powerful pop-rock anthem that lets Turner really show off her vocal skills, but it also has some beautiful and deeply romantic lyrics. Written by Holly Knight and Mike Chapman, the song was first performed by Bonnie Tyler (best known for her rendition of "Total Eclipse of the Heart"), but Turner's version was the ultimate, and "Schitt's Creek" turned it into something even more special by making it the song that united two people in love.

Schitt’s Creek premiered in Canada in 2015. After it began streaming on Netflix, the series blew up — even earning Emmys for its last season. Speaking of that final outing, the show’s finale found itself with some detractors. Prime Video has ordered a second season of Outer Range, a neo-Western that stars Josh Brolin as a Wyoming rancher fighting for his land and family. Charles Murray, who has an overall deal with Amazon Studios, will take over for creator Brian Watkins as showrunner.
The eight-episode first season kicked off in April and followed the Abbotts as they coped with the disappearance of daughter-in-law Rebecca. They were pushed closer to the brink when the Tillersons, owners of the profit-driven neighboring ranch, made a play for their land. An untimely death in the community sets off a chain of tension-filled events, and seemingly small-town, soil-bound troubles come to a head with the arrival of a mysterious black void in the Abbotts’ west pasture.

Amazon Prime Video has renewed “Outer Range” for a second season. Charles Murray, who is under an overall deal at Amazon Studios, is joining the series as showrunner after Season 1 was showrun by creator Brian Watkins. Watkins will continue executive producing.

In Peacock’s The Resort, a cold case gives a disenchanted couple reason to hang on a while longer.
Cristin Milioti and William Jackson Harper star as Emma and Noah Reid, whose 10-year matrimony is in desperate need of a tuneup by the time their shuttle drops them off at Bahia del Paraiso. On their first night, Noah passes out on the couch and Emma heads to the pool, where she takes an online quiz to determine whether she should end the relationship. However, the last question — “When you think of your future, is your spouse in it?” — stops her dead in her tracks.

Mayor (Tracy Letts) and a new city councilman (Noah Reid) make small talk early in "The Minutes"
Even if you don't attend live-theater, you're probably fond of Tracy Letts. He pops up as recurring characters on acclaimed TV shows and is one of Hollywood's most reliable character actors in prestige flicks like Ford Vs Ferrari, The Big Short, Little Women, and Lady Bird (for which he should have been Oscar-nominated). His talents don't end there. Unfair as it may be, some people are great at everything. In addition to being a terrific actor, theatergoers know him as a prolific Tony and Pulitzer-winning playwright. His ninth original play, The Minutes, concludes its Broadway run this coming Sunday so you have...

At the request of company members of Broadway’s The Minutes, producers announced today that audiences will be required to continue masking through the play’s final performance on Sunday, July 24, nearly a month after Broadway at large will shift to a mask optional policy.
The Minutes, at the Studio 54 theater, becomes the second production – following American Buffalo – to extend the mask mandate through their closing nights. (American Buffalo at Circle in the Square closed July 10.)
According to recent reports, six of the 11 cast members of The Minutes were out sick with Covid in mid-June.
The mask optional policy was announced by The Broadway League, the trade organization representing theater owners and producers, earlier this month. The new policy allows individual productions to set their own protocols.
The mask debate comes as New York City’s Covid positivity rates have plateaued or even crept up in recent weeks, with daily...

“There’s something really magic that happens when you think you’re embarking on a risk, because it’s so unknown,” declares Imogen Poots (“The Father”) about portraying a character that subverts expectations on genre-bending drama like Amazon’s “Outer Range.” “I thought it was ambitious, the fusing of the Western genre with, you know people say sci-fi, but we’re sort of just the idea of the unknown,” she proclaims, adding for our recent webchat, “it was very unique, and it felt like something I hadn’t come across before and haven’t done yet.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“I loved the collaboration,” admits double Emmy nominee Lili Taylor about what she most valued about working on Amazon’s genre-bending drama “Outer Range.” “We were there for about eight months during Covid and it sort of felt like an outward bound; like a camp, so we were all bonded,” she proclaims, adding for our recent webchat, “and I loved the elements, I think the elements were a character in the show; the wind, the vistas, the heat.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“The ranch is like another character, so we really needed to lean in to the Western in that sense,” reveals Jennifer Getzinger about Amazon’s genre-bending “Outer Range.” “But then, of course, whenever we did go to the more sci-fi elements, that’s where we could use a different type of visual language,” she proclaims, adding for our recent Q&a on the show’s distinct look and feel, “we actually put a lot more movement in it, it was a lot more dreamy I would say, or something where you’re just not sure what’s real.” We talked with Getzinger as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022 Emmy Awards contenders. Remote production went to a whole new level during the pandemic, and “Outer Range” could serve as television’s Exhibit A. Several members of the show’s crafts team sat down with IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill to discuss the making of the visually complex series. The panel consisted of director Lawrence Trilling, production designer Tommaso Ortino, VFX supervisor Jason Piccioni, editor and producer Travis Baker, and composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans.
The thing is, some of them hadn’t met until today.
“Some of us are just meeting each other today or at the premiere,” Trilling said. “We missed the collegial warmth you can have while making a show.”
The television Western is currently having quite the renaissance thanks to “Yellowstone” and its massively popular prequel “1883,” but “Outer Range” has little more than setting in common with its fellow Westerns. In fact, it’s pretty safe to say...

Some of the biggest names in film, television and the Broadway stage won’t be making the coveted pilgrimage to Radio City Music Hall this June when the 75th annual Tony Awards are handed out, as such high-profile performers as Daniel Craig, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Katrina Lenk, Beanie Feldstein, Jane Lynch and Patrick J. Adams were not among the nominations announced Monday morning.
And at least as surprising as the snubs was the strong showing of Paradise Square, a musical that received fairly mixed reviews and has been struggling at the box office since opening April 3. With 34 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Monday morning. Among the most surprising 2022 Tony Awards nominations snubs was Katrina Lenk, who plays Bobbie in Marianne Elliott’s reimagining of the late Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” The production merited nine nominations, including Best Musical Revival, Best Director, Best Featured Actor (Matt Doyle), and Best Featured Actress. Lenk previously won a Tony Award for her performance in Best Musical-winner “The Band’s Visit.”

“Outer Range” has come to an end. And what an ending.
Episodes 7 and 8 of the Josh Brolin-led supernatural drama, now streaming on Prime Video, exposed old secrets, revealed new truths and unleashed many, many buffalo on an unsuspecting Wyoming town. It was an apt perfect payoff for what was already a masterclass in slow-burn mythology-building and deft character work, with stunning performances from Lili Taylor, Imogen Poots, Noah Reid and Will Patton (amongst many others). And typical to the show, it beautifully mixed everyday drama (who will be victorious at the rodeo?) with oversized mystical quandaries.
Given what unfolded over the last four episodes, we had to chat with creator and executive producer Brian Watkins about the spellbinding final stretch of episodes – and what’s in store for the future of “Outer Range.”
Major spoilers for “Outer Range” follow. If you haven’t finished the season, Do Not read on.

After a season of surreal musical moments, Noah Reid hit a high note with Williams’ classic “Save the Best for Last” in this week’s finale, when Billy Tillerson euphorically serenaded aspiring cult leader Autumn (Imogen Poots) in the lobby of a bank and vowed to protect her from her rival, gruff rancher Royal (Josh Brolin).

“There is something beautiful about playing what you don’t know,” explains Noah Reid. The actor is currently making his Broadway debut in “The Minutes,” a new play from Tracy Letts. The former “Schitt’s Creek” star plays Mr. Peel, a newcomer to a small city council who “wants to matter” according to Reid. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
In many ways, Mr. Peel serves as the conduit for the audience as the mysteries of the script unfold. As he chases down missing information from the previous week’s council meeting, he is “ping-ponged around” by the other veterans of the group. Thus, Peel and the audience are united in their lack of knowledge, and in the pursuit of answers. “I do feel connected to the audience,” he reveals, “when the play takes the turns that it takes, I’m taking that turn with them. We’re in the same boat.

In a Broadway season teeming with exciting plays, musicals, and revivals, a dramatization of a small city council meeting may sound dull. Perhaps in the hands of a lesser playwright than Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Letts, but his fictional Big Cherry bureaucracy at the center of “The Minutes” is anything but tame. The “August: Osage County” scribe re-teamed with director Anna D. Shapiro for this genre-defying political satire with a horrifying underbelly. The ensemble comprises both New York and Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre mainstays, featuring the likes of Blair Brown, Jessie Mueller, Austin Pendleton, and Letts himself, with Noah Reid making his Broadway debut. “The Minutes” opened at Studio 54 on April 17 for a limited engagement.

Tracy Letts’ The Minutes would be one of the most thrilling new plays on Broadway this season even if recent real-life events hadn’t made it seem as uncanny as it is funny and, ultimately, disarming. The Minutes – there are a brisk 90 of them in all – begins as one thing and ends up quite another, and every step along the way is so finely rendered that we’re too busy savoring the moment to see what’s waiting just ahead.
Featuring an impeccable cast headed by Noah Reid – the Schitt’s Creek star makes a wonderful Broadway debut here – The Minutes reunites playwright and cast member Letts with his August: Osage County director Anna D. Shapiro, and together they find once again the eccentric, perfect balance of laugh-out-loud humor, dark undercurrents and emotional violence that made the prize-winning August unforgettable.

For some TV viewers, the phrase “Josh Brolin in a sci-fi western” will be enough to lure them into “Outer Range,” Brian Watkins’ new drama built around that exact premise. For others who may need a bit more context and/or incentive, “Outer Range” will provide — up to a point.
Premiering with two episodes on April 15 on (Amazon) Prime Video, the series does indeed center on an especially broody Brolin as Royal Abbott, the gruff patriarch of a family ranch on a plot of Wyoming land with a gaping secret. More specifically, the western patch of the Abbotts’ ranch is home to a wide, black hole, the origins of which are unknown but which has a pulsing power clear to anyone who stumbles upon it. In the pilot, directed with a sense of creeping unease by Alonso Ruizpalaicos, the hole’s lingering presence looms large over most everything that happens outside of it.

It’s usually easy to ascertain what tone a show is planning to strike. Then there are shows like Amazon Prime Video’s “Outer Range” which already sells itself as a genre mash-up and yet still leaves audiences asking, “Wait, is it supposed to be funny?”
Created by Brian Watkins, “Outer Range” is best summed up as a series for those who have watched “Yellowstone” on Paramount+ and said, “It’s good, but I wish it had more of a ‘Lost’ vibe.” If you’re thinking that sounds weird, you’d be right. The actors, for the most part, try their hardest to strike at whatever they think their character arc is, with Josh Brolin being the standout, but it’s doubtful most will stick around to figure out what the hell this show actually is about.

“Outer Range,” the new Josh Brolin-led Western series from Prime Video, aims to twist the well-worn genre at its very roots. To showcase the land of the West in a never-before-seen fashion, the eight-episode series mixes in an element of the supernatural, with mind-bending results.
“It took a very simple, straight-forward genre and then it took extraordinary twists, whether it be metaphysical or whatever you want to call it,” Brolin told Variety at the show’s premiere at Hollywood’s Harmony Gold theater on Thursday night. “It’s uncertain because there are so many directions it can go, and a lot of them can feel really cliché. But I feel like we kept it grounded.”

"Something's happening here, something bigger than you or me. The world's been waiting for something like this..." Amazon has revealed the full-length official trailer for a mysterious new sci-fi thriller series titled Outer Range, premiering on Prime Video for streaming later in April. The series follows a rancher fighting for his land and family who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming's wilderness. All kinds of different people are interested - government, conspiracy theorists, and more. "A thrilling fable with hints of wry humor & supernatural mystery, Outer Range examines how we grapple with the unknown." It all comes to a head with the arrival of a mysterious black void in the Abbotts' west pasture. Josh Brolin stars as Royal, with a major ensemble cast including Lili Taylor, Tamara Podemski, Tom Pelphrey, Imogen Poots, Lewis Pullman, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Matthew Maher, and Will Patton. I love the look of this!
