After producing films like The Black Phone, The Invisible Man, and Jordan Peele’s Us, you’d think it would take a lot to scare Jason Blum. As it turns out, what frightens Blum is a megastar with a cult-like fan following. I’m talking about Pennsylvania-born entertainer Taylor Swift! The blonde bombshell’s Eras Tour film is shaking it off in theaters this October, and the Blumhouse founder’s latest fright fest, The Exorcist: Believer, is getting out of her way.
“The one thing that scares me to death is Taylor Swift,” Blum joked with Entertainment Weekly about competing with Swift’s concert film for box office supremacy. Initially, Blum wanted to unleash The Exorcist: Believer on October 13, a Friday well-suited for the spookiest month of the year. However, when fans began sharing the hashtag #Exorswift on Twitter, Blum considered a release date change for the latest chapter in the Exorcist saga.

Universal Pictures is going so hard with their marketing of the October 6th release of director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse Productions‘ The Exorcist: Believer, it almost seems like the saying “another day, another Exorcist promo” would be fitting. It makes sense, since Universal and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a new trilogy of Exorcist sequels that begins with Believer. Today they’ve unveiled a featurette that’s called “Legacy” and looks to let us know that the filmmakers were seeking to honor the 1973 classic The Exorcist with this new sequel. You can check it out in the embed above.

The Universal Pictures marketing machine is working at full power to make sure everyone’s aware that there’s a new Exorcist movie reaching theatres next month – which makes sense, since Universal and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a new trilogy of Exorcist sequels that are coming from director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse Productions (the same creative team that was behind the recent trilogy of Halloween sequels). The Exorcist: Believer is set to be released on October 6th, and the latest piece of promotion is a featurette that discusses spirituality and the father and daughter characters that are at the center of the film’s story. The scariest movie is back this Halloween season with a terrifying new chapter. Universal Pictures (distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery) has dropped two trailers for ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ and each one is more petrifying than the last. Directed by the maestro of the horror genre, David Gordon Green, the fans have gotten a glimpse into the world of ‘The Exorcist’ which is filled with spine-chilling visuals.
Academy award winning actress Ellen Burstyn is all set to reprise her role of Chris Macneil and dive into the world of the devil.
Together, Green and Burstyn imagined the journey that Chris MacNeil began after her daughter Regan’s brutal exorcism in 1973. Since the events of the first film, Chris has dedicated her life to helping others understand the phenomenon of possession – especially other parents who have gone through hardships of the unexplained.

It’s been 50 years since Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn (Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore) earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role as Chris MacNeil, mom of Regan (Linda Blair), in the original The Exorcist film. Burstyn hasn’t been involved in any of The Exorcist projects since portraying the terrified mother of a young girl possessed by a demon in the 1973 blockbuster horror movie. However, The Exorcist: Believer managed to lure her back, and in this behind-the-scenes video, Burstyn discusses her return.
The Exorcist: Believer opens in theaters on October 6, 2023.
In addition to Ellen Burstyn, the cast includes Oscar nominee Leslie Odom, Jr (One Night in Miami), Lidya Jewett (Good Girls), Olivia O’Neill, Emmy winner Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale), Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles, and two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz.
David Gordon Green directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Sattler, based on characters created by William Peter Blatty.

Back in December, director David Gordon Green’s sequel to the 1973 classic The Exorcist (watch it Here), which is scheduled to reach theatres on October 13th, had to put filming on hold and begin its holiday break early because lead actor Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton) was stricken with an illness. But filming was able to resume after the holidays – and now Deadline has reported that production has officially wrapped.
Deadline’s report also reveals that producer Stephanie Allain has joined the project as an executive producer. Coming to us from Blumhouse Productions and Morgan Creek Entertainment, the film is being produced by Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James Robinson. Green, Danny McBride, and Couper Samuelson serve as executive producers with Allain. Ryan Turek is overseeing the project for Blumhouse.
