In 2009, Fox created a "Simpsons" scavenger hunt to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of the series. It involved hiding Easter eggs and references to the animated sitcom in all of the network's prime-time programs, including "House," "Lie to Me," and "Glee." At the time, Fox's popular procedural "Bones" had been running for four years and was in the midst of its fifth season. As such, it too received the "Simpsons" scavenger hunt treatment, and might have been the show that most successfully paid tribute to Matt Groening's series.
Season 5, episode 7, entitled "The Dwarf in the Dirt," contained multiple nods to "The Simpsons," including a wrestler named Bumblebee Man and a scene at the Jeffersonian Institute that featured an x-ray of Homer Simpson's skull hanging in the background, revealing an alarmingly small brain. “This Is Spinal Tap” is tapping into its cult fandom with a theatrical re-release for its 41st anniversary.
The iconic mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap” will get a long-awaited sequel, titled “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” September 12, with the original cast reprising their respective roles. To refresh before the sequel, why not venture back in time (and theaters) with the beloved first film?
Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer comprise the fictional band that director Rob Reiner captures as character documentarian Martin “Marty” Dibergi. The concept for the film was co-created by all aforementioned stars; Reiner directs, with June Chadwick, Tony Hendra, and the late Bruno Kirby co-starring. Karen Murphy produces.
“This Is Spinal Tap” famously chronicled “England’s loudest and most punctual band on their disaster-filled U.S. tour.” That band, though, never existed. The 1984 film is now remastered and remixed for the re-release.

Get ready to smell the glove all over again. With a long-in-the-works sequel on the horizon, the original This Is Spinal Tap is rocking back into theaters for its 41st anniversary. A new trailer from Bleecker Street showcases the highlights (and lowlights) of the landmark mockumentary. The remastered film hits theaters on July 5 for a limited run until July 7, thanks to Fathom Entertainment.
The trailer hits the comedic highlights of the film, as represented by the litany of misfortunes that befall the hapless rockers on an American tour. That includes getting lost on their way to the stage, the band getting second billing to a puppet show, and, of course, the stage props for their progressive rock epic "Stonehenge" being built eighteen inches tall instead of eighteen feet, putting them at risk of being "crushed by a dwarf." It also spotlights some of the band's pitch-perfect parody discography, including "Heavy Duty" and "Big Bottom.

Commandos! Get ready for a new crisp 4K Blu-ray release of the under-appreciated Joe Dante film Small Soldiers. The 1998 movie can be seen as a spiritual successor of sorts to Dante’s Gremlins series — as little sentient beings run amok on an unsuspecting group of people in a small town and it takes a plucky young hero, with his own little ally, to try to contain and destroy them. Blu-ray.com has reported that Paramount Home Media Distribution is set to release this new 4K remaster alongside a limited edition Steelbook Blu-ray on July 22.
The movie includes an all-star cast with Kirsten Dunst, Gregory Smith, Jay Mohr, Phil Hartman, Kevin Dunn, David Cross and Denis Leary. Meanwhile, the voice cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Brown, George Kennedy, Frank Langella, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Shearer, Bruce Dern, Clint Walker, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Christina Ricci.

As hard as it may be to believe today, The Simpsons was considered quite edgy when it first premiered in 1989 — so much so that some schools famously banned students from wearing T-shirts that depicted Bart Simpson casually using the H-word or dropping bovine-based slang terms.
But while it may have rattled conservative viewers at the time, The Simpsons — specifically the character of Bart — was directly inspired by perhaps the squeaky-cleanest sitcom of all-time: Leave It to Beaver.
Apart from Ward and June Cleaver’s regrettably suggestive nickname for their youngest child, Leave It to Beaver was a family friendly, highly sanitized view of 1950s American life in the suburbs. The show had to battle tooth and nail with network censors just to show a toilet on screen. And it was only for a shot of an alligator in the bowl, it wasn’t like Wally dropped a deuce or anything.

There are enough stars that have cameoed in "The Simpsons" to cover the entire Springfield Walk of Fame and back again. Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, U2, and Daniel Radcliffe (who has voiced more than one character) are just some of the names that've shared the animated space with Homer (Dan Castellaneta) and the rest of that beloved family. Three names that you have never seen on the end credits, however, were three iconic action heroes that were scheduled to make an appearance but unfortunately never did: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Bruce Willis.
It turns out that the heroes who dominated the silver screen in the '80s and early '90s never swung by the home of 742 Evergreen Terrace, even after they were explicitly written into an episode. Season 5, episode 10 of "The Simpsons," entitled "$pringfield," saw Mr. Burns (Harry Shearer) open a casino, and Schwarzenegger, Stallone, and Willis agreed...

As a result, it’s getting a proper cinema release in US cinemas on the 12th September. With any luck, it’ll appear in our fleapits not too long after.
Update: It’s confirmed. The UK release is also the same day, and Sony Pictures has release rights over here.

Closed mouths don't get fed, especially in Hollywood. So, when an actor wants to be part of a dream project, they must let it be known. That's exactly what Kevin Bacon, who has no plans to slow down at 66, did after hearing Rob Reiner was making a sequel to This Is Spinal Tap. The 1984 mockumentary comedy, although it wasn't a hit at the box office, developed a cult following after its VHS release and is said to be one of the first movies to popularize the genre. It's about the ups and downs of an English rock band trying to get back on the charts in documentary style. Bacon is a fan of the classic movie, and was determined to play "one of the exploding drummers," but didn't get the part.
According to EW, Kevin Bacon appeared on The View to promote his Amazon Prime Video series The Bondsman. During his appearance,...

The core cast of "The Simpsons" includes Dan Castellaneta, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith (who gets the best episodes), Julie Kavner, Hank Azaria, Maggie Roswell, Pamela Hayden, Russi Taylor, and Harry Shearer. Marcia Wallace was also part of the cast until her death in 2013, playing Bart Simpson's cantankerous teacher Mrs. Krabappel. Albert Brooks frequently guest-starred in the show's early years. There was some controversy in recent years about how several Black characters on "The Simpsons" were played by white actors, so Kevin Michael Richardson now plays Dr. Hibbert (previously voiced by Shearer), and Alex Désert now plays Carl (previously voiced by Azaria).
Each member of the core cast, however, plays multiple roles throughout "The Simpsons," including single lines from background characters. The series premiere of St. Denis Medical, which launched on NBC last fall, employs a time-tested trick for getting the audience up to speed on a workplace show’s setting and cast: starting on someone’s first day. In this case, the newcomer is Matt, an ER nurse from Montana. While that description primes his colleagues to expect someone tough and rugged, Matt is played by Mekki Leeper, so he’s kind of short, definitely slight and very nervous.
Matt finds his new situation overwhelming partly because he’s working in a hospital ER, and partly because he grew up on an extremely strict religious compound, so he doesn’t have much practice interacting with secular strangers. This means he missed a lot of pop culture, but he is extremely conversant about the Bible! It also means that, even as a medical professional, he’s suspicious of organ donation; he...

Exclusive: Bleecker Street is teaming with Fathom Entertainment on the re-release of Rob Reiner’s big hair rock mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap which will play theaters nationwide July 5-7.
Created by Reiner, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, This Is Spinal Tap chronicles England’s loudest and most punctual band on their disaster-filled U.S. tour. The reissue is remastered, remixed, and in definitive 4k restoration.
All of this is ahead of Bleecker Street’s Sept. 12 release of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.
Box office domestic for This Is Spinal Tap was under $5M unadjusted for inflation per Box Office Mojo, however, this was a big 1980s video title for the Gen X bunch. In 2002, the movie was deemed “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress, and was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.

In a career on stage, screen and television that has endured for more than 50 years, writer, actor and comedian Martin Short got his start in a 1972 Canadian production of the stage musical "Godspell" in a cast that included Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Victor Garber, Dave Thomas and Gilda Radner, all of whom would work with Short on subsequent projects in the years to come.
Short's first exposure to American audiences was as a member of the Second City troupe in the sketch show, "Sctv Network 90," which aired on NBC from 1981-83 and earned Short his first Emmy for writing. There he created such signature Short characters as Ed Grimley and Jiminy Glick. He went on to be cast in Season 10 of "Saturday Night Live" (1985-86) along with Billy Crystal, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest. Short then began his starring roles in films with 1986's "¡Three Amigos!" alongside Steve Martin and...

"The Simpsons" debuted shortly before Christmas in 1989, which means anyone under the age of 35 has never known a world without it. "The Simpsons" wasn't just a hit, but a cultural fulcrum point. Matt Groening's cynical worldview, filtered through an animated takedown of traditional American sitcoms, came to define the prevailing attitudes of the nation in the 1990s. We were over-educated, embittered by the excesses of the Reagan years, and ready to see television mutate into something punky and deconstructionist. "The Simpsons" was at the heart of that.
And then, even as the 1990s ended, "The Simpsons" never dipped in quality, turning out a full decade of invaluable TV comedy. While public attitudes shifted in the early 2000s ("shock" humor and post-9/11 despair came to define the era), "The Simpsons" persisted. The makers of the show found they could simply keep on working for as long as audiences were interested.

Rob Reiner and the gang dropped a trailer earlier this week for Spinal Tap 2, a sequel to the influential mockumentary they made decades ago.
It’s a typical teaser trailer, not saying much of anything and trying to drum up excitement without killing the drummer. The dials on a guitar amp are slowly turned to 11 before the final control is cranked to the symbol for infinity. Cue the crunchy guitars of “Stonehenge” while the iconic prop is added to the Spinal Tap logo to form a Roman numeral II. We also get a new tagline: “The end continues.”
No new details about the sequel since Cracked shared some Reiner nuggets last fall, but MeTV reports a little-known fact about the original: Spinal Tap never would have been made without the moral (and financial) support of Reiner’s All in the Family boss, Norman Lear.
It’s not hard to understand...

This news goes to 11. The sequel to the masterpiece rock-doc parody film “This Is Spinal Tap” is set to hit theaters this fall. Bleecker Street has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” the film from director Rob Reiner that has Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer all reprising their roles as England’s loudest — and most punctual — rock band.
The film will get a wide release on September 12, and in anticipation of that, Bleecker Street is also re-releasing a newly-restored edition of the 1984 original film back in to theaters this summer. That new version will also hit digital and streaming platforms, making it the first time the film has been available digitally in years.

The long-awaited This Is Spinal Tap sequel is set to hit theaters this fall, and the metal greats are returning with a new set of amps that — believe it or not — go past 11.
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will be released on Sept. 12, with Rob Reiner’s new film securing distribution from Bleecker Street. The announcement today is accompanied by a short teaser, which doesn’t show much, except a hand — likely that of guitarist Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest) — plugging into an amp and adjusting the levels.
