The Recording Academy recognized many of the musicians and people who worked behind the scenes in the music industry who have died in the past year during the Grammy Awards on Sunday night. Tony Bennett, Sinead O’Connor, Clarence Avant, Jimmy Buffet, and Tina Turner were among those celebrated.

Grammys In Memoriam 2024: Fantasia, Annie Lennox, Stevie Wonder & More Touching Performances (Video)
Stevie Wonder opened the In Memoriam segment of the 66th Grammy Awards, giving tribute to Tony Bennett before performing alongside a recording of the man and showing those who we lost last year. Names like Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Buffett, and others appeared on the screen before Annie Lennox took the stage for a secondary performance. More names, such as Gary Rossington and Sinead O’Connor, appeared before Lennox called for peace around the world. After that, the carousel of names on faces began to cycle through, with names like Clarence Avant appearing. Lenny Kravitz then came to honor the pioneer as a music executive and the “Black Godfather” of entertainment. Another performance began, this time featuring Jon Batiste with a rendition of “Lean on Me.” DJ Mark and Gangsta Boo from Three 6 Mafia and Magoo were also mentioned. Finally, Oprah Winfrey came out to give a tribute to Tina Turner, following Mylie Cyrus‘ performance,...

Dolly Parton isn’t done rocking yet. After sharing her new album Rockstar last week, our November cover star has returned with two new bonus tracks: Her rendition of the Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise,” plus a new version of her classic “Jolene” featuring Måneskin.
The Måneskin-assisted version of “Jolene” is available exclusively with the digital download version of Rockstar on Parton’s website, though the country icon did share a preview of the duet on Instagram. It sounds like the new recording stays fairly faithful to the original, with Måneskin’s Damiano David taking on co-lead vocals with Parton.
“Jolene” appears on the deluxe edition of Rockstar, which also features guest features from Sting, Steve Perry, Joan Jett, Mick Fleetwood, Pat Benatar, Brandi Carlile, and many, many more. See a preview clip of Måneskin’s take on “Jolene” below.

Rockstar, the star-studded rock’n’roll album by our November cover star, Dolly Parton, has arrived. Stream it below.
Inspired by her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Rockstar is the 49th full-length release from Parton, and features a variety of new originals and classic rock covers, as well as a heap of guest appearances by artists like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Ringo Starr, Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Debbie Harry, Nikki Sixx, and many more.
Speaking with Paramore’s Hayley Williams for Consequence’s most recent cover story, Parton explained that when she found out she was voted into the Rock Hall, she “didn’t feel like [she’d] earned it.” To make up for that, she got into the studio and cut a proper rock album, without cutting any corners. “That was important to me: not to half-ass do a record that’s a country girl singing some rock,...

On Rockstar, which finally drops today, Dolly Parton challenged herself to get out of her comfort zone, focusing on singing rock & roll for the first time in her career. She wrote a few songs for the album, but the vast majority of the tracks are covers, including some surprising picks.
Her rendition of Prince and the Revolution’s “Purple Rain” leans deep into the gospel feel of the song, giving Parton space to vocalize all the melisma she can handle where Prince played guitar. It starts with church organ and a little Hendrixy guitar riffing,...

Dolly Parton is arguably the most beloved living American. How many people are alive today because Dolly told them to get the Covid vaccine back in early 2021? Of course, she’s a paragon of country music, but her reach goes far beyond Nashville, from the disco pop of her working-woman masterpiece “9 to 5” to the soft-rock bliss of her classic Kenny Rogers duet “Islands in the Stream.” And the crossover love has been reflected back; one of the most popular cover songs of all time is Whitney Houston’s...

If you thought the death of Gary Rossington, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s sole surviving original member, last Sunday would bring the Southern rock band’s 52-year career to a close, you only had to be at the Plant City Strawberry Festival in Florida Sunday night. Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage a week after their founding guitarist’s death at 71 to play all the hits, from “What’s Your Name” and “Gimme Three Steps” to the one-two show-closing punch of “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.”

Despite writing some of their generation’s biggest hits, Lynyrd Skynyrd never had a song reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Instead, the band that popularized southern rock plateaued at No. 8 after tragedy interrupted their climb up the charts. Yet, despite their struggles, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music represents a noteworthy evolution in the rock genre.
‘Sweet Home Alabama’ is the only Lynyrd Skynyrd to crack the Billboard Top 10
Released in 1974 on their second album, “Sweet Home Alabama” reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for 17 weeks. Despite none of them being from Alabama, it was the band’s most successful song.
Before his unexpected death on March 5, 2023, guitarist Gary Rossington spoke to Garden & Gun about how the band came up with the hit song.

Damon Albarn has recalled the first time he watched late singer Terry Hall perform, aged 14.
Hall, the frontman of legendary two tone band, The Specials, died last December aged 63, shortly after a cancer diagnosis.
Now Gorillaz and Blur frontman Albarn has called the singer “the coolest human being on earth”, while being interviewed on Radio X.
"I was a kid of 14," remembered Albarn on the first time he encountered Hall.
"I somehow managed to get to a filming of Top of the Pops, and I found myself standing underneath Terry Hall and thought, ‘This is the coolest human being on Earth.’"
The pair later worked together on the Gorillaz track “911”, and Hall’s solo tracks “Chasing a Rainbow” and “Room Full Of Nothing”.
"He was a lovely, beautiful, fun person, and I didn’t know he was so ill, so I never got a chance to say goodbye,” Albarn added of the late singer.

In the last few years, Cj Strock, a talent agent who worked with the later incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band, faced an unusual dilemma. As seen in catalog and merch sales, a market still existed for the Allmans, their quintessentially Southern rock & roll, and their improvisational live shows, but the band itself didn’t exist: They formally gave their last performances in 2014, and Gregg Allman died of liver cancer three years later.
With an eye toward introducing new fans to the band, Strock had an idea — essentially a new Allmans.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Gary Rossington is recovering after undergoing emergency heart surgery recently.
The band announced Rossington’s procedure following Lynyrd Skynyrd’s concert Friday at the North Dakota State Fair, where they performed without Rossington, the last surviving original member of the Southern rock greats. Rossington and the band returned to the road for the first time in 15 months in June, but the guitarist had been absent from recent shows.
