Brazil’s film industry hits Berlin with a new stride in its step, bringing 46 producers and 80-plus films and projects, according to promotional org Cinema do Brasil, led by chairman André Sturm and manager, Maria Marta.
It is also in the process of receiving part of Brazil’s Paulo Gustavo Law funding, which is pouring RS2.8 billion ($571.1 million) into Brazil’s audiovisual sector, from rich states such as São Paulo to small town video stores.
Meanwhile, Brazil’s box office is beginning to return to pre-covid levels, as regional industries fire up in its Northeast and South.
At Berlin, São Paulo City film-tv agency Spcine, which has worked closely with Cinema do Brasil in recent years, is participating in a slew of activities, including AfroBerlin, aimed at bolstering Brazilian-African cooperation, the EFM’s Co-Production Market and Toolbox, a program focusing on diversity and inclusion, says Luiz Toledo, Spcine director of investments and strategic partnerships.

In a breath-taking plot twist, the health of Brazil’s indie production sector of films and TV shows has turned from the worst crisis in 30 years to an unprecedented boom.
The growth is fuelled by commissions from streaming platforms such as Netflix, local Globoplay, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max, and most recently the “resurrection” of federal incentive body Fundo Setorial do Audiovisual (Fsa).
“We never produced so much in the history of Brazil,” helmer Paulo Sergio Almeida, head of film marketing and research firm Filme B, told Variety.
The scenario today is radically different from the one in 2019, when the National Cinema Agency (Ancine) virtually paralyzed funding for the Fsa, by far the main local incentive. The Federal Accounts Tribunal (Tcu) dictated the halt, due to alleged inadequacies in Ancine’s system of audit expenses of productions subsidized with Fsa coin.

Sony Pictures International Productions has picked up the German remake rights to two comedy titles from FilmSharks International subsidiary, The Remake Company: Argentine family comedy “Ten Days Without Mom” and Brazil’s risqué romp, “Upside Down.”
“High concept family-driven and erotic comedies are the hottest trending genres for holiday and summer releases in cinemas and on streaming platforms,” said FilmSharks’ Guido Rud who pointed out that the Spanish and Italian versions of “Ten Days Without Mom” were hits either in at the box office or online.
The Italian remake of ‘Ten Days…’ bowed in Italian cinema theaters at No. 1 and its sequel “10 Giorni Con Babbo Natale,” released over Christmas, is one of Amazon’s hottest 2021 titles in Italy, said Rud.

Madrid — In a sign of one direction Latin America’s film industry is going, building ever more significant production partnerships on banner art films around the region, premier Brazilian production house Gullane has boarded Benjamín Avila’s “The Cardinal.”
Already produced by Chile’s Storyboard Media and Argentina’s Magma Cine, “The Cardinal” has just been selected for San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum.
News of Gullane’s equity participation comes as it is finalizing Argentine financing on “Bachelor Party,” its latest big commercial play, distributed in Brazil and Latin America by Warner Bros.
Now packing three partners as multi-lateral production partnerships increasingly mark out the biggest movies from Latin America, “The Cardinal” will weigh in to San Sebastian as one of the highest-profile at the Forum.
Part of Argentine Avila’s lifelong concern for opposition to dictatorship and tyranny – both his parents were montoneros, who died fighting Argentina’s Junta,...

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Breaking Dawn Part 2 to become Brazil’s top-selling movie in 2012? Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, Breaking Dawn Part 2 is a major blockbuster worldwide, having grossed more than $600m in less than two weeks. Now, relatively speaking, among the world’s top film markets no country has embraced the Twilight movie franchise’s final installment as ardently as Brazil. (Photo: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.) Breaking Dawn Part 2 has already shattered Brazilian single-day and opening-weekend box-office records — in ticket sales. In other words, inflation and 3D/IMAX surcharges don’t play a role here. In Us dollars, Brazil — with $33.61m — is currently Breaking Dawn Part 2‘s third biggest international market, trailing only the United Kingdom ($43.25m) and Russia / Cis ($36.27m). By the end of its opening weekend, Breaking Dawn Part 2 was already the seventh highest-grossing 2012 release at the Brazilian box office.
