Sundance Now and AMC+ have released the official trailer for Black Snow, a new six-part series premiering on February 23, 2023. Described as part whodunit and part coming-of-age drama, Black Snow stars Travis Fimmel as a cold-case detective investigating a murder.
In addition to unveiling the official trailer, AMC+ and Sundance Now released a batch of photos ahead of the show’s two-episode premiere.
In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Fimmel described why Black Snow caught his interest.
“What intrigued me about him is that he’s a very flawed character. He’s got a lot of issues, childhood issues that he’s still dealing with, parental figures, and I think that’s the reason he became a cold-case detective,” said Fimmel. “There’s some stuff that unravels in the story that he went through that is very similar to the stuff that’s going on in the main storyline.

Review: Russell Crowe is a movie star. There is no question about the actor’s abilities on screen whether it be in marquee dramas like A Beautiful Mind, action epics like Gladiator, or period pieces like Cinderella Man. In recent years, Crowe has performed in projects that appeal to him ranging from pulpy flicks like Unhinged or superhero fare including Man of Steel and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Russell Crowe is telling the behind-the-scenes story about his new film.
The actor took over directing duties for “Poker Face” under the condition that he could do “whatever the f**k I want.”
“It tested my f***ing patience like you wouldn’t believe but art is never made in a perfect environment,” the 58-year-old told The Courier Mail.
Gary Fleder was originally slated to direct the film with a script by Stephen M. Coates, but has since been replaced by the actor.

When you hear the phrase “poker face,” you might get a certain pop song stuck in your head, or you might conjure up an image of stoicism, unreadability — the kind of expression that helps a gambler take home the pot.
Russell Crowe is adept at such masculine impassiveness. Even when bellowing about revenge as Javert in “Les Misérables” or coming undone in “A Beautiful Mind,” he has a solidness to him. Unfortunately, while solidity can be beneficial — as in dependable, trusty — it can also be boring. Such is the downfall of “Poker Face,” a new feature written and directed by, and starring, Crowe.
Crowe’s first screenplay, from a story by Stephen M. Coates, follows Jake Foley (Crowe), an Aussie rogue who, along with his best friend Andrew (played by RZA), leveraged his teenage poker skills into the first online poker enterprise. As a result, Jake is insanely wealthy. After...

One of Russell Crowe’s greatest strengths as a movie star is his ability to make it look easy. When he’s at his best, it often looks like he’s barely trying. Whether it be heroic vengeance (Gladiator), bold leadership (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World), unhinged––ahem––madness (Unhinged), or anything in between, he appears incredibly comfortable. When Crowe is in the director’s chair, he seems to be trying a bit too hard. At least so far. Poker Face––marking his first screenplay credit and second directorial feature following The Water Diviner in 2015––is a lot of things at once.
Crowe plays Jake Foley, a billionaire who got rich after he developed tech for early online poker that then got repurposed for military use. A sepia-toned flashback leads into an extended shamanic drug trip that seems to clarify a few moral quandaries for Jake,...

The title “Poker Face” suggests a droll, methodical cunning that unfortunately proves elusive everywhere else in Russell Crowe’s sophomore effort as writer-director. As handsomely produced as his first, 2014’s historical drama “The Water Diviner,” it offers an even more overstuffed narrative whose myriad elements barely have time to register before we arrive at a nearly 10-minute end credits crawl. This Australia-shot mix of intrigue, soap opera, thriller and tearjerker never quite gels, despite enough surface gloss and cast expertise to hold attention. Screen Media is releasing theatrically to a couple dozen U.S. screens this week and to digital formats on Nov. 22, with other territories following.
A prologue finds our protagonists as teenage besties in what looks like the late 1970s: five rural Aussie lads already obsessed with poker. After a swim in an idyllic quarry, they’re challenged to a game by a local bully, who naturally is enraged by his loss.

Scott Ryan in ‘Mr Inbetween.’
In the heart-wrenching climactic scene of the last episode of Mr Inbetween, Scott Ryan’s Ray Shoesmith carried out the mercy killing of his brother then torched the house.
So what is next for the troubled hit man and single father as Ryan maps out the third season of the FX/Fox Showcase drama laced with dark humour?
Without spoilers, the show’s star, creator and writer tells If: “Season three will probably be more like season one in tone; it won’t be as dark as season two. But there will also be room for some pretty dark stuff.”
Justin Rosniak as Ray’s gormless best friend Gary will be even more prominent in the new season. Also returning are Chika Yasumura as his daughter Brittany and, he hopes, Damon Herriman as his boss, nightclub owner Freddy.

‘Mr Inbetween’.
FX has renewed hitman comedy/drama Mr Inbetween for a third season, due to air locally on Foxtel’s Fox Showcase.
Created, written by and starring Scott Ryan, the Sydney-shot series follows charismatic yet volatile hitman Ray Shoesmith.
Ray “takes care of people” — collecting debts, relieving them of drugs and guns, and often taking care of them on a more permanent basis. Ray demands respect and does not tolerate it when someone disregards his very clear code of ethics.
Ryan won the Aacta Award for Best Lead Actor in a TV drama for his portrayal of Shoesmith last year. It’s a character he first introduced to the world via 2005 mockumentary The Magician.
Other members of the cast include Brooke Satchwell, Justin Rosniak, Chika Yasumura, Nicholas Cassim and Damon Herriman.
Both season one and two were directed by Nash Edgerton and produced by Michele Bennett for Jungle Entertainment,...

In its first season, the title of FX’s Mr. Inbetween suggested several things. The first was the niche its main character, Ray Shoesmith (played by the show’s creator, Scott Ryan), has carved out for himself providing violent, often lethal, solutions to other people’s problems. The second was the show’s careful perching on the line between drama and comedy, with each compact, under-30-minute episode mixing wry humor with much darker material. The third was the way that Ryan couldn’t seem to decide whether he was...

In the writer’s room that is Scott Ryan’s head, the marginalised and charmingly transgressive characters of Mr Inbetween have staged a coup. Unconcerned with character arcs or narrative demands, they flow with dark authenticity.
“I sit down and I just write a bunch of shit, I sit at the computer and stuff comes into my head. It’s like being a medium that channels spirits. I just channel down whatever it is up there,” explained Ryan the creator and star of the dramedy, the second season of which begins today on Foxtel, at a Q&a screening earlier this week.

When “Mr Inbetween” premiered a year ago this September, it was enveloped by the rather large shadow of another half-hour hitman series, “Barry.” Bill Hader’s first season had wrapped months prior to Scott Ryan’s FX debut, but it was in the middle of what proved to be a very successful Emmys run and comparisons between the two dark comedies were unavoidable. They still are, as “Barry” continues to dominate cultural conversation (on its way to another likely score at the Emmys) and “Mr Inbetween” hopes to find its own space within the ever-growing TV sphere.
To be clear, it deserves one. The sharply written and well-performed Australian series isn’t in “Barry’s” upper-echelon of comedy, but it’s smart, wickedly funny, and, in Season 2, purposeful. And much of its new direction can be found in the clear differences between this bald, mustachioed hitman (played by Ryan) and his tall,...

Scott Ryan as Ray Shoesmith.
Ben Oxenbould, Josh McConville, Rebecca Montalti and Rose Riley are the new faces in the second season of Mr Inbetween, the comedy/drama created by and starring Scott Ryan as criminal-for-hire Ray Shoesmith.
Directed by Nash Edgerton and produced by Blue-Tongue Films, Jungle Entertainment and Michele Bennett’s Pariah Productions, the new series premieres on Fox Showcase at 2 pm on Friday September 13, express from its Us debut on FX.
Shoesmith’s definition of “taking care of people” means collecting debts, relieving them of drugs and guns and often taking care of them on a more permanent basis.
In season two his work and personal life begin to collide and he finds himself struggling to keep both sides of his life from imploding.

It all stated with at Melbourne Film Festival that filmmaker/actor Nash Edgerton was attending. He caught Scott Ryan’s half hour mockumentary The Magician about a working-class hitman, Ray Shoesmith, with a sweet family side.
“I thought my brother (Joel) would get a kick out of it; my brother and I have a dark sense of humor,” said Edgerton who has frequently collaborated with his bro on such pics as Gringo, which he directed, and acting in Joel’s Blumhouse/Stx horror pic The Gift.
Ryan had originally shot The Magician as a feature, but had cut it down to 30 minutes. When Edgerton wanted to see more, Ryan handed him a copy of the entire film. With producer Michele Bennett’s help, the feature version of The Magician received a release, and soon after Ryan’s concept found its way to FX.

The series stars Scott Ryan as Ray Shoesmith, a father, ex-husband, boyfriend and best friend: tough roles to juggle in the modern age. Even harder when you’re a criminal for hire. The six-episode season, written by Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton, stars Ryan, Damon Herriman, Justin Rosniak, Brooke Satchwell, Jackson Tozer, Nicholas Cassim, Chika Yasumura and Matt Nable. The second season will debut in 2019, broadcasting day-and-date on FX and Foxtel.
The series was shot in Australia and produced by Blue-Tongue Films and Jungle Entertainment, in association with FX Productions, Screen Australia and Create Nsw. Ryan, Edgerton and Jason Burrows are executive producers and Michele Bennett is producer.
“It’s been fantastic to see ‘Mr. Inbetween’ embraced by fans and critics. The exciting, offbeat and fast moving first season is...

Scott Ryan in ‘Mr Inbetween’.
After directing, writing and starring as the lead in 2005 feature The Magician, Scott Ryan was still full of ideas about where to take his character, charismatic hitman Ray Shoesmith.
“Because of the low budget nature of the film, 80 per cent of the things I wanted to do I couldn’t do…. I had all these ideas, and I was like, ‘Oh, maybe a TV show’,” he said.
Together with the film’s producer, Blue-Tongue Films’ Nash Edgerton, Ryan worked for years to get a series up that was centred on Shoesmith. They came close several times, only to have it fall down at the last minute.
Ryan eventually gave up on the idea that they were ever going to succeed. However, Edgerton persisted.
“He was the first person to really get The Magician. He gets it, he really gets it, and that’s why he...

The chances of a second season of Mr Inbetween, the hitman comedy-action-drama created by and starring Scott Ryan, look better than good following the show’s Us premiere on the FX network last Tuesday.
The network, which has 90 million subscribers, uses three key criteria for deciding whether or not to renew a show: Critical acclaim/awards; audiences’ responses including social media; and executives’ belief in the series.
If Mr Inbetween ticks two of those three boxes, FX will almost certainly co-commission with Foxtel another series from Jungle Entertainment and Blue-Tongue Films.
Directed by Nash Edgerton and co-starring Brooke Satchwell, Edgerton’s daughter Chika Yasumura, Damon Herriman, Justin Rosniak and Matt Nable, it premieres on Fox Showcase on October 1 at 8.30 pm.

TV and film have long been fascinated with the inner lives of spies, assassins, and people who otherwise operate underground and out of sight. Untangling the possible motivations someone might have to live such a life, not to mention carry out startling and sometimes downright horrific acts, provides so much narrative catnip that hardly a month goes by without a new variation on the same theme. 2018’s TV has already had a couple sterling examples in HBO’s “Barry” and BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” both of which manage to depict the lives of assassins in ways we’ve never seen before — which is, after so many other attempts, a real feat.
So if you’re going to try your hand at a hitman story, it’s on you to come up with something more interesting than the many dozens we’ve seen before. “Mr Inbetween,” unfortunately, doesn’t.

“I wouldn’t say I enjoy hitting people,” Ray Shoesmith explains. “If I hit somebody, I generally got a pretty good reason.”
Ray, the main character of the Australian drama Mr Inbetween, which debuts Tuesday on FX (I’ve seen all six episodes) is many things: divorced father to elementary schooler Brit (Chika Yasumura), new boyfriend to Ally (Brooke Satchwell), friend to Gary (Justin Rosniak) and caretaker to his ill brother Bruce (Nicholas Cassim). Ray is also a killer for hire, continuing 2018 TV’s fascination with oddball assassins (see: HBO’s Barry,...
