Dalibor Matanic’s The High Sun wins hat trick at Cottbus.
Croatia was the big winner at the 25th edition of FilmFestival Cottbus (Nov 3-8) with Dalibor Matanić’s The High Sun taking home three awards, including the Main Prize and Fipresci Prize.
The €25,000 Main Prize was shared equally between Matanić and his producer Ankica Jurić Tilić for the Croatian-Slovenian-Serbian co-production which had its world premiere in San Sebastian in September.
The film’s actress Tihana Lazović was in Cottbus to accept the Main Prize on behalf of Matanić and Tilić, and subsequently picked up the €5,000 Special Prize for Best Actress for her portrayal of three women in three consecutive decades.
The High Sun premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard sidebar where it won the Jury Prize; international sales are handled by Cercamon World Sales for the film which is now Croatia’s submission for the Foreign-Language Film Oscar.

Other winners included Love Is All You Need, The Act of Killing, The Congress and The Broken Circle Breakdown.
Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty was the big winner at the 26th European Film Awards in Berlin, picking up four of the silver statuettes for European Film, European Director, European Actor for Toni Servillo, and European Editor for Cristiano Travaglioli.
The Great Beauty is Italy’s Oscar entry this year and had won the EurAsia Grand Prix at Tallinn’s Black Nights Film Festival a matter of days before the awards ceremony in Berlin.
Sorrentino could not personally accept the two awards as he is serving on the jury at the Marrakech Film festival, but producer Nicola Giuliano brought members of the cast and crew on stage to receive the audience’s applause.

The Fantasia Film Festival is taking place from July 18th to August 6th in Montreal and will feature over 100 films from around the world. We gave you a look at the initial lineup last month and now have an additional list of Fantasia 2013 films that will be screening, including Curse of Chucky, You’re Next, and Frankenstein’s Army:
Horror Is Child’S Play – Don Mancini’S Curse Of Chucky (World Premiere)
A rarity among genre franchises, the Child’S Play series (begun in 1988) has retained the sure-handed guidance of original screenwriter/creator Don Mancini throughout killer doll Chucky’s decades’-long reign of horror. Mancini, who will be hosting our “scar-studded” world premiere, graduated to the director’s chair with 2004’s Seed Of Chucky, after having co-written or written every entry in the series. The Bradford International Film Festival is typically an underground-friendly fest. This year appears to be no exception with two very special experimental film retrospectives, as well as a few modern underground-type flicks.
The 19th annual Biff will roll on April 11-21 at several locations around Bradford and Leeds in England, including the National Media Museum, Hebden Bridge Picture House, Hyde Park Picture House and other venues.
Biff is hosting a tribute to Stan Brakhage this year by screening the prolific filmmaker’s magnum opus, Dog Star Man, as well as a selection of his short films, from 1963′s legendary Mothlight to 1994′s Black Ice. There’s also going to be an epic-sized tribute/retrospective of experimental films from Austria, a country with a proud avant-garde filmmaking tradition that’s typically overlooked.

The Oscar season is almost upon us, and the submissions list is in for the Best Foreign Language Film category, featuring a record 71 entries, including the first submission from Kenya.
Last year, Iran’s Asghar Farhadi came away with the top prize for his acclaimed film, A Separation, and the year before, it was Denmark’s Susanne Bier with her In a Better World.
This year, there are already a handful of strong contenders amongst the pack, most notably Michael Haneke’s Amour, for Austria, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes; Olivier Nakache’s and Éric Toledano’s The Intouchables, for France, which has been breaking records at the global box office; Pablo Larráin’s No, for Chile, which also came away from Cannes with an award in hand; Kim Ki-duk’s Pieta, for South Korea, which took four awards at Venice, including (controversially) the Golden Lion; and...

The Intouchables
A record 71 countries, including first-time entrant Kenya, have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 85th Academy Awards®. In May, Michael Haneke.s Amour (Love) won the Palme d.Or at the 65th Cannes Film Festival and was shown this past weekend at the 50th New York Film Festival. However the film I was happiest to see make the list below is from France – The Intouchables from directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano. Check out our review Here.
In the Academy’s rules, only one picture will be accepted from each country. Plus the Academy Statuette (Oscar) will be awarded to the motion picture and accepted by the director on behalf of the picture.s creative talents. Ultimately five foreign language motion pictures are nominated for this award.

Update: The official list has been revealed and the total is a record 71 movies. I have updated the list directly below or you can check it out here. The original article follows. I have been tracking the Oscar Foreign Language submissions again this year, as I have for the past several years, and it looks like we finally have a full field as I expect we will be seeing an official press release from the Academy some time this week. This year we have five more submissions already over last year as the total has now reached 68 submissions compared to last year's 63. This, despite, Iran boycotting the Oscars this year due to the anti-Islam film Innocence of Muslims, which has sparked so much controversy as of late. To reach the total of 68 films I have just finished adding 16 more titles to the list from the following countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina,...

It wouldn’t be a proper festival if there wasn't at least one film that I just didn’t enjoy. In truth, that’s partially why festivals are always so exciting: There’s an element of surprise inherent to each screening. Unfortunately, Vegetarian Cannibal is one of the bad surprises of Fantastic Fest. From the reactions of everyone in the theater (including one man who fell asleep), I’m guessing this wasn’t a positive experience for most. While I enjoy challenging films with difficult subject matter, I don’t enjoy boring ones, and Vegetarian Cannibal is really only challenging because of how much I wanted to leave my seat.
Vegetarian Cannibal does have an interesting premise, but unfortunately it just does not follow through. In Croatia, Dr. Danko Babic (Rene Bitorajac), a gynecologist hired to perform illegal abortions for prostitutes in the mafia,...

Anurag Basu’s Barfi to compete with Michael Haneke’s “Amour” and Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta”
Anurag Basu’s “Barfi” might have lured the selectors at home but it’s unlikely to have an easy ride ahead. Basu will have to compete against the veterans like Michael Haneke who took home a second Palme d’Or at Cannes this year for his “Amour” (Official Austrian Entry). Closer home in Asia, Korean Master Kim Ki-duk will also pose an equal threat to the Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer Barfi. Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta” clinched the Golden Lion at Venice this year.
“Barfi” was declared official Oscar entry from India on Saturday night by the Film Federation of India. Other Indian films which were in race included Milan Luthria’s The Dirty Picture, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Paan Singh Tomar, Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani, Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur Parts I and II,...

Wow! I literally just jumped up for joy hearing this final wave. I think that this might be my favorite selection of films since I have been attending. Films like American Mary, Antiviral, Berberian Sound Studio, the remake of Who Can Kill A Child? – Come Out and Play and the World Premiere of the sequel to The Collector! These films plus a few others just caps off what I’m sure will be my favorite Fantastic Fest yet!
Also, for those keeping score, Michael picked 7 movies that are definitely showing while I picked 6. However, this could change once the secret screenings show. Again, Fantastic Fest starts next Thursday and we plan to have reviews, interviews and possibly video & audio blogs. Anyway, here’s the announcement:

Laced with explicit sex, late term abortions and animal violence Branko Schmidt's new Croatian effort Vegetarian Cannibal may very well be this year's A Serbian Film in terms of its willingness to push hot button topics to the extreme in the name of social commentary. Cineuropa describes the story like this:Dr Danko Babić (Rene Bitorajac) is a successful gynecologist in his mid-30s. Although clearly an expert in his field, he is an unscrupulously ambitious and utterly despicable person. Babić's best friend is chief police inspector Ilija (Leon Lučev), with whom he takes part in sport-betting scams, and who leads him to 'controversial businessman' Jedinko (Emir Hadžihafizbegović). Jedinko deals in hard drugs and high-end prostitution (naturally, with police support), and needs a gynecologist to take...

ROME -- Branko Schmidt's The Melon Route (Put Lubenica), a Croatian drama about a people smuggler who protects the sole survivor of an accident for which he was responsible, was the top film at the first Drake International Film Festival, taking home the award for best film plus the best actress award.
The festival, held near Naples in the city of Caserta, began June 23 and concluded Saturday.
John DeBellis was selected as best director for his work on The Last Request, a comedy about a son who leaves seminary to carry out his father's last request to have the family name carried on. The DIFF Future Award went to the New Zealand horror spoof Black Sheep, a comedy about a genetic experiment that turns sheep into bloodthirsty killers -- set in a country with more sheep than people.
Mei Sun, who played the sole survivor of the smuggling accident in Route, won the prize for actress, while the actor nod was given to Punk Love star Robert Blanche.

ROME -- Ryan Eslinger's "When a Man Falls in the Forest", a Golden Bear nominee at this year's Berlinale, and "Numb" from Harris Goldberg are among the dozen films that will appear in competition at the first Drake International Film Festival, set for June 23-30 near Naples.
The lineup was announced amid controversy over the leadership of the new festival, which will be held in the sprawling Reggia di Caserta, a World Heritage Site since 1996. Several of the event's top officials were replaced in recent weeks, with some complaining loudly in the Italian press.
But organizers promise the festival will be a hit.
With a screening schedule that focuses on new filmmakers and innovative technologies, Drake's competition lineup also includes Robbie Moffat-directed action flick "Axe Raiders", "Johnny 316" from Erick Ifergan, Andrew Black-helmed comedy "Moving McAllister" and "The Last Request" from John DeBellis and starring Danny Aiello.
Other competition titles include Nick Lyon's gritty rape and murder mystery "Punk Love"; "Gumiho Gajok" (The Fox Family) from South Korea's Hyung-gon Lee; "The Heart of the Earth", a romance from Antonio Cuadri; Brett Leonard's action fantasy "Highlander: The Source"; "The Melon Route" from Croatia's Branko Schmidt; and Augustin Diaz Yanes' Viggo Mortensen starrer "Alatriste", winner of three Goya Awards earlier this year.
