With "Avengers: Endgame" behind us and Chris Evans having retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe until further notice, we can all agree that "Captain America: The First Avenger" is the best Steve Rogers solo film, right? From its character work to its action sequences and a rousing score by the legendary Alan Silvestri, director Joe Johnston's WWII adventure is a top-tier MCU movie. While it may lack the visceral melees that the Russo Brothers brought to its sequels, "The First Avenger" delivers more than enough whiz-bang thrills and Brooklyn attitude to make up the difference (that and its politics are much less confused than those of "The Winter Soldier").
Johnston's superhero picture also boasts what is still one of the McU's most distinguished casts, pairing Evans with Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, and Dominic Cooper. Even Natalie Dormer, David Bradley,...

This article contains speculation that could lead to spoilers for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the wider MCU.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier dropped a new trailer during the Super Bowl with some tantalizing new hints at the world Sam and Bucky are fighting in. And while we still don’t have a total grasp of the full scope of the story or what our heroes are up against in this post-Captain America world, we got glimpses of new characters, a new (possible) hate group, and a good look at a classic villain’s iconic ski mask.
But who the hell are all these people? Well, we know some for sure, and we have some interesting ideas on the others.
Here’s that trailer if you haven’t seen it yet.
Now, let’s break down who The Falcon and The Winter Soldier villains might be…

The season opener of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s final run teased a major connection to a cornerstone of the McU, with Hydra shown to get hold of a bunch of vials filled with a mysterious green fluid. Fans wondered whether these could be an early form of the super-soldier serum that would go on to create Captain America. In the second episode of season 7, this theory was confirmed, with new information revealed about how the serum came about.
The team have traveled back to 1930s New York in a bid to stop the alien Chronicoms from altering Earth’s history and preventing S.H.I.E.L.D. from forming. Their first gambit is to prevent the creation of the super-soldier serum because without that, there’s no Red Skull or Cap and the changes to the timeline would be astronomical. Without the rise of both the S.S.R.

To kill or not to kill the father of the future leader of Hydra before he creates the aforementioned leader, that is the question.
The team was split on whether or not to get rid of Freddy Malick as to prevent Hydra, and therefore S.H.I.E.L.D., from being formed on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 Episode 2.
Both sides of the argument made valid points, but we have all consumed enough media to know that messing with the past can lead to dire consequences. Thankfully, they managed to escape 1931 partly unscathed.
I say partly because they managed to leave Enoch behind in 1931 while the rest of the team jetted off to another time period.
The consequences of this action are unknown, but given the lax nature of the last scene between Enoch and Ernest Koenig in the speakeasy, it might be safe to say that the timeline is safe,...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been off doing its own thing for the past few seasons, displaying little interest in tying into the wider McU. However, the show’s seventh and final run seems to be bucking this trend. The time travel-centric storyline means the resurrected Coulson and the gang are dabbling in established history, with the season opener already introducing a major MacGuffin that could have direct connections to Captain America.
In “The New Deal,” the team arrive in 1931 New York in order to stop the alien Chronicoms from preventing the foundation of S.H.I.E.L.D. They initially believe their enemies are targeting future President – and founder of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s precursor, the Ssr – Franklin D. Roosevelt. However, they’re mistaken, as the Chronicoms are really after Wilfred Malick, the father of future Hydra leader Gideon Malick. Without Hydra, we learn, S.H.

This article contains spoilers for the Agents of Shield season 7 premiere.
There were plenty of surprises in the Agents of Shield season 7 premiere, but none were as unexpected as the true target of the Chronicom infiltration into 1931. While the team assumed the sentient robots were after New York governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who would eventually establish the Strategic Scientific Reserve as a precursor to Shield, they were actually after a lowly bartender named Freddy. Learning that his last name is “Malick” tells us that he’s the father of former World Security Council member and season 3 villain, Gideon Malick, but even with those powerful connections how could he be the thread that unravels it all?
Coulson quickly realizes that the idea is to remove Shield’s greatest enemy to prevent its need to be founded in the first place, but he also knows the old Hydra saying: take out one...

Red Skull‘s return in Avengers: Infinity War was a massive surprise for fans, as he hadn’t appeared in the McU for seven years since his debut in Captain America: The First Avenger. His second comeback in Endgame, meanwhile, was less unexpected, but still welcome. Now that he’s a recurring presence in the franchise though, folks want to see him get back to his old villainous ways. His old enemy Steve Rogers might’ve retired, but there is another Sentinel of Liberty left for him to face.
On that note, We Got This Covered has heard that Red Skull will re-emerge at some point in the future of the McU and, when he does, he’ll this time do battle with Sam Wilson’s second Captain America. Our sources – the same ones who told us about the Guardians appearing for a cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder and...

Red Skull returned after seven years in Avengers: Infinity War, and then again in Avengers: Endgame. Marvel fans are calling for the former Hydra leader to show up once more, then, seeing as it feels like he’s now a regular recurring character in the franchise. One place that seems like it could be a natural fit for him is Disney Plus’ upcoming The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Steve Rogers may be retired, but why not pit Johann Schmidt against the next Captain America, Sam Wilson?
The Red Skull himself, Ross Marquand, has been asked about this possibility in a new interview, but his lips are sealed. While speaking to Point Blank Live, the Walking Dead actor was questioned over whether the villain is in the TV show. His only response was “I don’t know about that,” which he said with a big laugh.

Seven years after his apparent death in Captain America: The First Avenger, Red Skull made a surprise return in Avengers: Infinity War and then again in Avengers: Endgame. In these pair of cameos, we learned that the former Hydra leader had been enslaved into guarding over the Soul Stone on Vormir. However, with the gem claimed by Thanos/Hawkeye, Johann Schmidt has now been released from his servitude and is free to roam the Marvel universe.
So, will we see him again in the McU? Actor Ross Marquand, who took over the role from Hugo Weaving, certainly hopes so. While speaking to ComicBook.com, the Walking Dead star was asked if he thinks Red Skull could turn up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. “Oh, I have no idea. Last year’s Avengers: Infinity War featured a surprise comeback for Red Skull of Captain America: The First Avenger fame, and while his appearance didn’t amount to much more than a fan-pleasing cameo, it seems the door is now wide open for Johann Schmidt to reassert himself as one of the McU’s main villains.
In fact, according to sources close to We Got This Covered – the same ones who told us Taskmaster will be the villain in Black Widow and the Real Mandarin will be the villain in Shang-Chi, both of which were correct – Marvel now hopes for Red Skull to face off against Sam Wilson, most likely in the currently unannounced Captain America 4. And though the details of Marvel’s intentions remain unclear, this clash would certainly make a lot of sense from a character perspective.
After all, Sam officially inherited the mantle of Captain America in this year’s Avengers: Endgame.

The Red Skull first appeared in the pages of the Captain America comic books all the way back in 1941, and has shown some incredible staying power to remain one of Marvel’s most enduring and iconic villains ever since. As such, the character was an obvious choice to play the antagonist when Cap finally came to the big screen in The First Avenger, with Hugo Weaving still managing to chew the scenery even under heavy prosthetics.
To the surprise of many fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Red Skull reappeared in both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame as well, acting as the gatekeeper of the Soul Stone on Vormir, although this time played by The Walking Dead’s Ross Marquand after Weaving declined the opportunity to reprise the role. Today at Comic-Con, Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed a load of interesting details about their massive Marvel movie during a panel titled, funnily enough, “Writing Avengers: Endgame.” The most fascinating things we learned came from the ideas they had in early drafts that never made it into the finished product. Like, for instance, how Red Skull could have helped Captain America save the day.
Yup, you read that right. Markus revealed that, prior to work on the Endgame script, Marvel developed a “manifesto” which collated all the loose ends that had developed in the McU over the years that could be cleared up via time travel.
The writer explained:
“We wrote a big document that was everything you could possibly do in these movies. In there, is the Red Skull is clearly alive… He’s awesome! Let’s find a way to use him. Let’s tie this whole thing together…...

Given that there’s already so much to address in Avengers: Endgame, there are many important moments in the narrative that aren’t just brushed over but are also completely absent. Of course, the biggest is Captain America’s mission to go back in time and replace the six Infinity Stones to their proper points in the timeline. We imagine this would be a pretty tough job for just one hero to complete, especially when it took 10 of them to grab the Stones in the first place.
As such, it would’ve been nice to get at least a glimpse of how Cap handled the whole thing when he traveled back to the past and most importantly, fans have been wondering what would’ve happened when Steve Rogers returned the Soul Stone to Vormir. This must’ve meant that he came face-to-skull with his old foe Red Skull, right?

At least, not at that moment. You see, at the end of the film, Cap goes back in time to return all the Infinity Stones to where they belong, so as not to mess up the other timeline. The return of Red Skull in Avengers: Infinity War was the kind of fan-pleasing twist that you’d normally expect to be reserved for the most out-there of forum theories, but now that Johann Schmidt has joined the likes of Thanos and Loki as one of the rare McU villains to last beyond a single movie, the question is raised of whether this comeback might continue in next year’s Avengers 4.
Of course, seeing how actor Ross Marquand managed to keep a secret as big as his role in the Russo Brothers’ last film under wraps, it only figures that he’d have the restraint to keep mum about any future McU appearances, or lack thereof. And so when The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman asked the star in a recent episode of Talking Dead whether he’d be in the Infinity War sequel, Marquand was careful to give the writer nothing.

Marvel Studios packed an overwhelming number of familiar faces into this year’s Avengers: Infinity War, and perhaps none were more surprising to see than Captain America’s old foe Red Skull.
Since we last saw this figure at the climax of The First Avenger, the villain has undergone quite a few physical changes. For one thing, he’s looking a lot less like Hugo Weaving and a lot more like Ross Marquand, but more importantly, Johann Schmidt has taken on a newly spectral form that was almost reminiscent of another famed Marvel character whose skull is on full display: Ghost Rider.
That’s the comparison which this recently shared concept art has earned, and it’s not hard to see why, with the character’s head even displaying that fiery orange glow that we’ve come to associate with the antihero.

Red Skull made his shocking first appearance in the McU since 2011 in Avengers: Infinity War, with it being revealed that he’d been transported to the planet Vormir by the Space Stone at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger. In the 80 years since, he’s remained there, acting as the Soul Stone’s guardian. The former Hydra leader even describes himself as being cursed to serve this higher power that he’s doomed never to possess.
Due to his grim reaper-like appearance in Infinity War, fans immediately saw the comparisons between Johann Schmidt and Mistress Death, who featured in the original Infinity Gauntlet comic book storyline but was left out of the movie adaptation in order to simplify things. While this was no doubt at least partly the intention, there is another character from the Marvel universe that Red Skull’s role in the film resembles much more closely.

One of the most shocking moments in Avengers: Infinity War was the unexpected return of Red Skull, last seen back in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Fans had been calling for the Hydra leader to make another appearance ever since his open-ended exit from that film made it look like he’d been teleported into space rather than disintegrated, and late last month, they finally got their wish.
What folks didn’t expect, though, was for him to be revealed as the guardian of the Soul Stone. When Thanos and Gamora travel to Vormir in search of the elusive Infinity Stone, we learn that Johann Schmidt has been isolated on the planet since he held the Space Stone in his hand at the end of The First Avenger. As such, he didn’t wear his old Nazi uniform in his Infinity War appearance and instead donned a grim reaper-like shrouded cloak.
