Though it never charted above No. 72, Korn’s self-titled 1994 debut has had unparalleled influence over the last two decades of American heavy music: the rise of nu-metal’s whomping pain-stomp, the road to platinum genre-smashers like Linkin Park and Slipknot, the popularity of the 7-string guitar, the emergence of superstar producer Ross Robinson and his method-acting-style techniques and even the mosh-centric rhythms of stadium dubstep artists like avowed Korn fan Skrillex.

Britney Spears in the fourth "Hold It Against Me" teaser
Photo: Jive
Last week, Britney Spears sent fans into a tizzy when she began rolling out all-too-brief teaser clips for her upcoming "Hold It Against Me" video, which premieres February 17 at 9:56 p.m. on MTV. And while the snippets are certainly tantalizing — Britney onstage! Britney with some shirtless dudes! — they're also rather brilliant: the truest example to date of Britney and her team harnessing the promotional power of social media and riding it for all it's worth.
Though promo stunts have become rather commonplace in recent years — it seems like every new album comes pre-loaded with some sort of viral campaign or marketing tie-in — the good ones (like Spears') manage to rise above the clutter. In honor of Britney, here's a look back at some of the most...

The 2010 Lollapalooza festival is about to begin in Grant Park in the heart of downtown Chicago. Once things get started with These United States (who have the honor of playing the first set of this year's festival), the music won't stop until Soundgarden and Arcade Fire both wave goodnight following their festival-closing sets on Sunday (August 8). Along the way, there will be huge performances care of Lady Gaga, Green Day, Phoenix, the Strokes, the Black Keys, Erykah Badu and dozens of others, and MTV News will be delivering the goods on every last note.
Ever since the first Lollapalooza way back in 1991 (which Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell put together as a farewell tour for his seminal band), the festival has morphed and evolved along with the popular tastes of the day. There has rarely been a better barometer of what's going on in the rock universe than the Lollapalooza lineup,...

With the 2010 edition of Lollapalooza set to kick off Friday, MTV News decided to dive deep into our archives and dig up the greatest/ weirdest/ scariest/ downright rocking-est moments in the fest's rather epic history. We're calling it "Lollapalooza Lookback," and we think it's a pretty fitting tribute to the granddaddy of American music festivals. We've already tackled Pearl Jam's 1992 afternoon set, Nine Inch Nails' stage-trashing heroics from 1991 and Ice Cube's "buck wild" goals in '92; now, we're fast-forwarding to 1997, a time when nobody seemed to know what was happening with music — not even Korn, who inexplicably found themselves on the main stage.

The temperature outside was 90 degrees (with 80 percent humidity) on Wednesday at the Pnc Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey, but the heat didn't stop more than 15,000 fans from coming out to support some of the biggest names in heavy metal music. And just the event name alone — the Rockstar Mayhem Festival — pretty much summed up the Jersey tour stop.
Opening act His Name Was Yesterday set the energy level at "high" early in the afternoon, before the festival launched into the more melodic side of the lineup, featuring the likes of 3 Inches of Blood and newcomers In This Moment, a band fronted by a female (not a common sight in metal), who jumped over to the soundboard and had...
