The irrepressible Robin Williams is Joey, a trash-talking Cadillac salesman with three women on the line, who becomes an involuntary hero when Tim Robbins smashes his motorcycle into the car showroom and threatens to kill everybody. Roger Donaldson’s crisis-farce black comedy is still funny — and my favorite Robin Williams feature.

17 years ago, The Blair Witch Project burst into theaters on a massive wave of hype and made instant stars out of its directors, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, and its trio of lead actors: Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, who made the cover of Newsweek magazine that same August. It was an unprecedented success that paved the way for the "found footage" genre that would explode over the subsequent decade, with films like Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield successfully exploiting the format's potential. None of these, though, would haunt viewers in quite the same way as Blair Witch, whose grainy, pre-smartphone aesthetic and terrifying denouement would stick with us long after the film's pop-cultural moment had passed. Of the film's three lead actors, Leonard has undoubtedly enjoyed the greatest run of Hollywood success post-Blair Witch, though it's worth noting that his career didn't really begin to heat...

Screen Masculinity
For almost a year, Graffiti with Punctuation editor Blake Howard and I have been discussing doing a series of essays about a topic of mutual interest - portrayals of masculinity on screen. The aim is to explore our favorite elements of the topic, to get quite personal and to come up with something hopefully compelling.
We've now begun that journey over the next few months starting with the first piece by Blake. It took him to some challenging places, but the result is intimate, passionate, complex and ultimately wonderful and sets a tone for promising reading to come. I urge you to check out the piece in our features section, or by clicking here and to leave feedback on it if possible.

Actor plans big-screen version of Summer Crossing, Capote's 'inspired' early work about young debutante in 1945 New York
Scarlett Johansson will become the latest Hollywood star to make the leap to director with an adaptation of Truman Capote's posthumously discovered debut novel, Summer Crossing.
The project will see Johansson make her directing debut with the story of a 17-year-old Protestant debutante who embarks on an affair with a Jewish parking-lot attendant while her family vacations in Paris during the summer of 1945. It is currently being touted to potential investors at the Cannes film festival.
"Several years ago I began working alongside the Capote estate and writer Tristine Skyler to adapt Summer Crossing, an inspired early work of Truman's which has long captured my heart," said Johansson in a statement. "Being able to bring this story to the screen as my full-length directorial debut is a life dream and deep privilege.

Hilary Brougher made a splash at the fest with her sophomore Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award winning drama Stephanie Daley (Sundance ’06) but it’s been nada since this minor stroke of genius. After some early casting hiccups, Brougher’s adaptation of Jane Mendelsohn’s 2000 teen novel of the same name found Sophie Curtis, Kelly Reilly and Graham Phillips toplining. Production took place during the summer, with post production beginning in August, which means with some overtime work, Innocence – a Killer Films’ production could be ready for a showcase. Brougher reteams with cinematographer David Rush Morrison and editor Keith Reamer and with Production Designer Susan Block (The Believer, Grace Is Gone) also contributes.

Scarlett Johansson is fully focused on her directorial debut after spending five years developing the project in secret.
The actress is stepping behind the camera for a movie adaptation of Truman Capote's Summer Crossing, which was thought to be lost for more than 50 years but was eventually published in 2005.
Johansson has teamed up with screenwriter Tristine Skyler for the project, but has no plans to star in the film about a teenage girl living in New York after World War II.

Scarlett Johansson veered into directing in 2009 with These Vagabond Shoes, a short black and white film that starred Kevin Bacon as a man in search of a hot dog. The short was intended, by Johansson, to be part of the New York, I Love You omnibus film, but ended up being cut. (Producers said the short was cut because it was in black and white, while the rest of the film was in color, and didn't feature an "interpersonal relationship" as did the other tales.) Now Johansson is going to direct a feature based on a Truman Capote story. The film will be Summer Crossing, an adaptation of the once-lost first novella by Truman Capote. Tristine Skyler, a screenwriter and playwright, is scripting. The plot goes like so: "Set in New York during the summer of 1945, this is the story of a young carefree socialite, Grady, who must make serious...

Once she has finished buying a Zoo and assembling the Avengers, Scarlett Johansson plans to make her directorial debut from a lost Truman Capote novella that only just resurfaced. Capote wrote .Summer Crossing. in the 1940s, but ignored it and left it to only be unearthed and published in 2005. It retells an oft-told story of a teenage girl . in this case, Grady McNeil -- discovering her sexual independence as she fights to break free from her stifling New York family. Capote set his story against the backdrop of a nation emerging from the horrors of World War II, but stands apart from the pack for its bleak, depressing ending (no spoilers here). Variety says Oscar winner Barry Spikings (The Deer Hunter) will produce Johansson.s film, which New York playwright Tristine Skyler will adapt from Capote.s retrieved novel. There.s no timetable in the trade story, and Johansson.s...

Just in time for a mild controversy over women’s presence behind the camera, Variety reports that Scarlett Johansson will make her directing debut with Summer Crossing, an adaptation of a once-lost Truman Capote novel. The Deer Hunter producer Barry Spikings will get behind the Tristine Skyler-scripted project, along with the Truman Capote Literary Trust; no studio is currently attached.
Capote‘s novel, the first of his career, centered on Grady McNeil, “an 18-year-old girl breaking free of her rich, smothering, family to discover her own identity and sexuality” in a post-World War II New York City. Part of her discovery comes by “intensifying an affair with and quickly marrying a parking lot attendant from a dysfunctional Brooklyn Jewish family,” a decision that leads to her pregnancy.
From that summary, I’m not getting the impression that the story will demand the utmost directorial ability or control — if only...

She can act. She can record a rather strange album of Tom Waits covers. And now, she can direct, too.

"Summer Crossing" is based on a lost novella by Truman Capote ("In Cold Blood") set in post-wwii New York that centers on an 18-year-old girl breaking free of her rich smothering family to discover her own identity and sexuality.
What, doesn't she want to make a movie about the romantic pratfalls of twentysomething slackers like every other first-time director under the age of 30?

Catherine Hardwicke, the director previously responsible for adapting Twilight and the Red Riding Hood fairytale for cinema audiences, appears to have taken a hiatus from supernatural teen romances; with the news that she is to adapt Martha O’Connor’s 2006 “The Bitch Posse” demonstrating a greater grounding in reality.
The novel, which follows a trio of high school friends into adulthood, jumping as it does between two different timelines, chronicles the breakdown of friendship that leaves one character in a mental institution, another a promiscuous writer and the third navigating a loveless marriage.
With a script by Tristine Skyler, and entering production under Miranda Bailey and Matthew Leutwyler’s Ambush Entertainment (Super) banner, The Bitch Posse certainly boasts enough angst to keep the Lords of Dogtown director busy.
Deadline had this one first.

After the overwrought supernatural love triangles of both Twilight and Red Riding Hood, it sounds like Catherine Hardwicke is looking to ease back into the sort of territory she covered so well with Thirteen, agreeing a deal to direct The Bitch Posse.Actress-writer Tristine Skyler has adapted Martha O’Connor’s 2006 novel, which appears to blend the time-jumping memory tales of Now and Then with the pitch-black portrayal of women seen in Heathers. The "Bitch Posse" of the title is a group of three friends, Cherry, Amy and Rennie, who come from difficult homes but bond over their shared problems. But instead of forming a self-help group, they turn their frustrations against their fellow classmates, causing trouble until something tears their friendship apart. And the ramifications push on into their adult lives, with one entering a mental institution, another trapped in a loveless marriage and the third former friend as...

Catherine Hardwicke's next directorial projects after "Twilight" continue to get highlights. After tackling "Red Riding Hood", she is now on board "The Bitch Posse" which is a movie based on Martha O'Connor novel and which script is penned by actress slash scribe Tristine Skyler.
The novel which was published in 2006 follows the story of three friends, Cherry, Amy and Rennie, high school seniors who come from troubled homes and form a dangerous alliance called the Bitch Posse. Something occurs that rips apart the friendship and haunts them into adulthood. One of them ends up in a mental institution, one is a promiscuous failed writer and the other is having trouble in her marriage.
The book's style is to switch between high school years and adulthood. "After pages of vodka, cocaine, 'f**king' and 'cutting' (in both past and present narratives), the friends' terrible secret finally comes to light," says...

Catherine Hardwicke's next film will be the film version of Martha O'Connor's novel The Bitch Posse.
According to Deadline, Tristine Skyler wrote the script and it will be co-produced by Virginia Madsen, who originally optioned the book. Skyler is that blond chick who was in Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows! She's also appeared on TV in the series Angel and was in that really weird slasher film starring Dawson from Dawson's Creek called Final Draft. She's also a writer, and aside from The Bitch Posse, she's penning the heavy script for The Bell Jar adaptation due in 2012 from director Nicole Kassell. No. Shit.
So, The Bitch Posse is about three high school friends, Cherry, Amy and Rennie, who call themselves The Bitch Posse. These are troubled girls, however: outlaws, rebels, outcasts. And something horrible happens to them, causing their adulthoods to be fucked up royally forever.

Catherine Hardwicke will forever be known as the director of Twilight, but she has been and hopefully will again be more than that. (Even Red Riding Hood, which was more like Twilight than not, was at least much weirder one than I expected.) She's now set to direct an adaptation of The Bitch Posse, a 2006 novel by Martha O'Connor that tells of a set of three friends who bonded in high school, then live through an event that shatters their friendship. The story also follows the three women in their 30s, flipping back and forth between the high school years and decades later when their shared secret has helped corrupt each of the three lives. Tristine Skyler scripted the film, which sounds as if it is very much in the wheelhouse of the woman who directed Thirteen. What interests me more here is that Virginia Madsen and her business partner...

Even though The Eagle didn’t perform as well as anyone involved would have liked, Kevin Macdonald should have a good 2011. He has the Bob Marley documentary Marley coming up, as well as the YouTube-based documentary Life in a Day, the latter of which played at Sundance this year to strong reviews. Now, Variety says that the Scottish filmmaker is attached to direct How I Live Now, which is based off the novel of the same name by Meg Rosoff.
The story is described as following a “15-year-old girl from New York” who goes to England for a summer, staying “with cousins she has never met.” She eventually falls in love with her cousin, but their relationship “is affected by the outbreak of a fictionalized war, which separates the whole family.”
The movie is set to be adapted by Tony Grisoni (the Red Riding trilogy) and Jeremy Brock, who wrote the aforementioned Eagle for Macdonald.
