Batman is a character that has been repeatedly cast in R-rated DC properties, which favor the dark and sinister nature of the character and his rogue’s gallery. Even when an R-rating is not sought for the project, it is mostly aimed at older children.

The first look of Batman: Caped Crusader is here and it is nothing like Bruce Timm’s previous animated versions of the Dark Knight. In the new animated series, Timm did one thing that he aspired to do with the original Batman: The Animated Series. He is setting the upcoming show in the 1940s, the period when Bob Kane and Bill Finger first designed their DC superhero.

The ’40s setting will not be the only radical change in Bruce Timm’s new project as the first look also provides glimpses of Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Clayface. The series will be released on Amazon Prime Video after HBO Max dropped the project after its announcement.

Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are two names that defined the Dcau since Batman: The Animated Series was launched back in 1992. They voiced the hero-villain duo of Batman and Joker that became the standard for the rest of the adaptations. Since Batman: Tas, the two went on to lend their voice to these characters for various other projects.

Henry Cavill leaving franchises midway is not something new. The English actor had already left many fans teary eyed when he left the role of Superman in the DC Extended Universe. And a report suggests that the show is all set to come to an end after Season 5. And Freya Allen couldn’t be more relieved.

‘Batman: Caped Crusader,’ initially announced as an HBO Max series in 2021, found a home on Amazon Prime Video after HBO passed on the project.
Scheduled for release later this year, the creators, Timm and character designer James Tucker, emphasized in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview that their top priority was to avoid replicating ‘Batman: The Animated Series’. To achieve this, they opted to make the new show a true period piece set in the 1940s, departing from the anachronistic mix of technologies seen in B:tas.
One of the biggest surprises for the fans was that in this show, Harley Quinn will be portrayed as Asian American which stirred polarizing reactions from the fandom. Bruce Timm, who originally co-created the character in the first place commented on their different take on Harley. They wanted to reverse everything from her behavior to her costume:

Set to come out later this year, the creators, Timm and character designer James Tucker, stressed in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview that their main goal was not to copy ‘Batman: The Animated Series’.
To do this, they chose to make the new show a real period piece set in the 1940s, moving away from the mix of old and new technologies seen in ‘B:tas’.

Up until 2023, The Witcher was one of the best book-based storylines ever transformed into a live-action series, and one of the biggest reasons behind its tremendous success was Henry Cavill’s effortless performance as the Geralt of Rivia. But then Cavill was replaced, with Liam Hemsworth becoming the new protagonist of the lore — though not without earning much backlash from fans.

After originally being developed for the HBO Max streaming service, Batman: Caped Crusader found a new home on Prime Video early last year, and we finally have a first look at the highly-anticipated animated series.
Bat-fans have been anxiously awaiting a teaser for the show, and while we may have to wait a little longer, EW has now debuted a batch of images spotlighting the Dark Knight and some very different takes on several of his villains.
While speaking to the site, Bruce Timm and character designer James Tucker noted that they decided to make the new show a '40s-set period piece in an effort to set it apart from the original '90s Batman: The Animated Series.
“James and I are both really big fans of movies from that era, so we decided to really lean into that in terms of the clothes, the cars, the architecture, and the level of technology,...

As wonderful as X-Men ’97 has been, even the most devoted Marvel Zombie has to admit that the gold standard of superhero animation remains Batman: The Animated Series. Created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, the show told some of the all-time greatest stories about the Dark Knight, and even launched an ongoing universe with Justice League, Batman Beyond, and Static Shock.
So when Warner Bros. announced Batman: Caped Crusader from Timm, fans took notice, especially with J.J. Abrams and The Batman director Matt Reeves on board as producers. Despite a near disaster when Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav declined to distribute the completed series, as is his wont, the show found a home on Amazon Prime Video.

It's been a long time coming but we've finally got our first real look at "Batman: Caped Crusader." The upcoming animated series from "Batman: The Animated Series" co-creator Bruce Timm and producers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves has encountered a few setbacks on its journey to release, but is now set to debut on August 1, 2024, on Amazon's Prime Video.
Details about "Batman: Caped Crusader" were first revealed at DC FanDome back in 2021, where we were promised a show that would tell a whole new story rather than continuing where "Btas" left off. Timm also characterized the show as "more 'Batman: [The] Animated Series' than 'Batman: [The] Animated Series,'" revealing that "Caped Crusader" would return to the "original principles" of the '90s show but would have no limitations in terms of "adult content," "violence," and "adult themes." During its 1992 to 1995, "Btas" had to carefully navigate the Fox censors, who...

Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series, which kickstarted the DC Animated Universe (Dcau) is regarded as the best adaptation of the Caped Crusader by many. Besides the plot, one of the primary reasons for its popularity was the iconic voice castings. The late Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman and Joker have left an indelible mark on the viewers’ minds.
Kevin Conroy’s Batman and Mark Hamill’s Joker
While Conroy is often hailed as the best Batman ever, Mark Hamill’s performance is considered even more praiseworthy than the critically acclaimed live-action works. However, the Star Wars star was not the first choice to play a Dcau role. It was only for voice director Andrea Romano, that Hamill could give us the legendary Joker performance.

Although there has been a plethora of onscreen adaptations of the Batman mythos, to many, the 1992 series still remains the definitive version of the character and his rouges’ gallery. While most of it had to do with Bruce Timm and Paul Dini’s brilliance, one cannot undermine the contribution of the amazing voice cast, which involved the likes of Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Arleen Sorkin, etc.
For that, we have Andrea Romano to thank, who served as casting and voice director on the acclaimed show. However, getting the tone of the show right took Romano a while, as this was unlike anything she had been part of before.

Despite the mysticism of voice-over acting and the mysterious voices behind the animated parts, there remains a strong attraction to the medium of animation for actors who strive for real creative potential beyond the allure of recognition and glamor. Kevin Conroy stands out, among the millions of other faceless heroes, as one of the most respected and famous voice actors whose contribution to the DC comics lore has made him synonymous with Batman.

The Killing Joke is one of those films that would have been a challenge to adapt. Despite the film being adapted into an animated feature, there was a lot of backlash about how the story was treated. Regardless, Bruce Timm had certain reservations about the adaptation from the beginning of production.

Timm revealed to Empire what his idea for the film was, and that pretty early on in the project, there was one aspect of the film that was set in stone from the very beginning. The film made a lot of changes from the source material, but this bit was to be kept as is, Bruce Timm revealed.

After delivering the definitive Batman with Batman: The Animated Series, Bruce Timm joined forces with Alan Burnett to give the other member of the World’s Finest a similar treatment. Voiced by Tim Daly, Superman: The Animated Series made its debut in 1996, and is often considered the definitive onscreen portrayal of the character, only next to Christopher Reeve.
But despite its success, Daly wasn’t brought back to voice Clark Kent in Justice League Unlimited, and The Sopranos star had a pretty good idea about why it was the case.

In 2016 Bruce Timm reunited with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill to adapt Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s acclaimed 1989 graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke. Following the comic’s nature, the animated film earned an R-rating upon its release, as Timm wanted to stay truthful to the source material, and Tkj became the first rated R DC Universe Original Animated release.
But reflecting on the film’s adult rating, the Batman: The Animated Series creator clarified it wasn’t the start of a trend of more rated-r animated DC releases moving forward.

Fans love a good violent Batman movie once in a while, but when a promising animated film gets censored after it proved to be the perfect avenue to channel the grim and grotesque nature of the franchise, it surely was a massive disappointment for the audience.
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker almost gave fans what they wished for, but after a tragic shooting accident that happened in 1999 at the Columbine High School, the media’s portrayal of violence was put in question. This forced Warner Bros to distribute a censored version, while the original cut was released later in 2002.

The DC Animated Universe had a host of versions of Batman strewn across the timeline, but one DC film portrayed the character a little differently than what is usually the tone that is taken for him. Bruce Timm talked to ScienceFiction.com about how he saw Batman, and how one particular film approached the character differently.

Gotham by Gaslight is a film that is different than other Batman films, given that the story is set in an Elseworlds, which means it might not necessarily be part of the main Dcau continuity. Written by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, Gotham by Gaslight is considered to be the first DC Elseworlds story, which was lauded following its alternate take on the Batman mythos. Set in the Victorian era, the story follows Batman’s quest to apprehend Jack the Ripper, based on the infamous real-life serial killer, and the story was finally adapted into an animated feature in 2018.
However, the animated feature didn’t see Kevin Conroy return to voice the caped crusader, and per Bruce Timm, it was due to marketing reasons.

Batman Beyond remains one of the greatest versions of the Dark Knight, following Terry McGinnis in the city of Neo Gotham, as he is mentored by Bruce Wayne in a cyberpunk setting. Batman as a character has some amazing storylines that would make perfect sense to be adapted into an animated film. Initially, Bruce Timm thought that there was no way it was possible to adapt Batman: Under the Hood, an arc in the comics that served as the sequel to Death in the Family, which infamously killed off Jason Todd, who was serving Batman as his Robin after Dick Grayson’s departure.
Death in the Family
Bruce Timm, speaking to Animation World Network, talked about how he and Alan Burnett first came across the comic with the intention of adapting it. The problem started when the duo realized the amount of work it would take to just set up the story, and the various characters that were making an appearance as the narrative unfolded.
However, the pitch for the film was what ended up convincing the duo to go ahead with it.

Anyone who knows anything about the DC’s Dark Knight will probably tell you that Batman is more authentic to the personality of the character than Bruce Wayne. While they might appear to be one and the same person, Batman has repeatedly said that Bruce Wayne is the performance he puts up for society, while Batman is the persona that he identifies with as his authentic self.

While Christopher Nolan is seen as the forerunner of original ideas in Hollywood with films such as Tenet and Inception, the filmmaker once redefined the superhero genre with his The Dark Knight trilogy. The films saw Christian Bale as Batman and depicted a realistic version of Gotham and the Caped Crusader, and dealt with philosophical and real-world issues such as the nature of violence and the right to privacy.
While The Dark Knight trilogy is often placed among the greatest superhero films ever made, Nolan reportedly also had a hand in making one of the most underrated animated Batman movies. According to Bruce Timm, Nolan was deeply involved in the making of Batman: Gotham Knight, which was set between the events of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Batman is a versatile character. He has worn the faces of saviors and destroyers, been the Dark Knight in caped armor, the financial support of the Justice League, and occasionally, even a father figure. Despite this, there is one thing that has stayed constant through most of his versions; the bat does not kill.
Batman: The Animated Series starred Kevin Conroy
Kevin Conroy, who played the character for almost three decades, understood this fact about the character perfectly. He maintained a sort of consistency throughout all of the versions he played, and it seemed to be quite intentional. Specifically talking about the ‘no killing’ rule, it would seem that the voice actor upheld it almost as strictly as the Caped Crusader himself.
So much so, that he was upset with one of the most controversial decisions taken in the Snyderverse; Ben Affleck’s Batman killing people.

Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series was one of the defining shows based on the character that has a long-lasting legacy. The show starred Kevin Conroy as the Caped Crusader and was the beginning of the Dcau.

Not to be confused with Matt Reeves’ The Batman, The Batman Animated Series was a fun reimagining of Batman and its coterie of supervillains, which scored well critically throughout its run. One thing that fans found odd about the show was the introduction of Batgirl as Bruce’s first sidekick, but the writers can’t be blamed for this decision.
