The 5th Annual Key West Film Festival has announced its official 2016 lineup, including the opening night film, “20th Century Women,” directed by Mike Mills and starring Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup. As part of the festival’s signature Critics Focus program, MTV’s Chief Film Critic Amy Nicholson will present and lead a conversation around the film, alongside David Fear, Senior Film/TV Editor of Rolling Stone.
Director of Programming Michael Tuckman said of Nicholson’s pick, “I could not be more thrilled with Amy Nicholson’s choice of ’20th Century Women’ to kick off our 5th Anniversary edition of festival. Annette Bening’s performance is Oscar-deserving and the rich depth of the balance of the leading cast is Altman-esque in its quality. Amy’s discussion after the film will bring a cunning critic’s eye to this fabulous film for audiences.”

Mani Ratnam's 1988 melodrama Tamil melodrama Agni Natchathiram is now being remade into Hindi by one of his most ardent disciples Bejoy Nambiar. Nambiar has been closely associated with Mani Ratnam and has assisted him on several of his films. When Bejoy made his directorial debut with Shaitaan, Mani Ratnam went out of his way to support his protege. It therefore comes as no surprise to know that Bejoy will now remake a Mani Ratnam film. However the fact that Agni Natchathiram has already been re-made into Hindi does make Bejoy's aspirations somewhat redundant. Mani's film was remade in 1992 as Vansh with Siddharth Ray and Sudesh Berry cast as two warring step brothers. The film directed by action director Pappu Varma was a stunted stilted stiff and vapid remake of Mani's film. It bombed. Bejoy's film will star Harshvardhan Rane and Vicky Kaushal as the step brothers. When I asked...

Before every film in Bollywood, there comes a disclaimer stating 'No animals were harmed during the shooting of the film'. In all possibilities, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming magnum opus Bajirao Mastaani won't be having the same before the start of the film.
The reason? Well, even though it was unintentional, a mare passed away during the shoot of the film. As per news reports, the deceased mare was unwell and undergoing medical treatment when it passed away by colliding with a horse amidst of a shoot. Speaking about the death of the mare, its owner Pappu Varma said that the mare died a natural death by falling sick. He added that the production unit was really taking utmost care of the animals. The unit even had cancelled their half day's shoot after the mare's death.

If you thought Revenge was going to take things slow following the death of Malcolm Black, you clearly don’t know this show very well. Sunday’s episode — the last new hour until March 8, if you can believe it — reminded us just how chaotic life in the Hamptons can be, even without a psychotic killer on the loose.
Let’s start with Nolan and Louise’s wedding reception, an appropriately over-the-top affair which was nearly derailed when Emily used an ancient Japanese trick (or whatever) to help Louise remember she did kill her father, just as “Penelope Dreadful” revealed in last week’s episode.

A most unwelcome face from Klaus’ past returns to New Orleans to raise a little (more) hell.
Terror, thy name is Papa Tunde! The Big Easy’s new big bad reared his not-so-ugly head on the Jan. 28 episode of The Originals, and no vampire was safe from his sacrificial wrath — least of all Rebekah (Claire Holt), who temporarily had her powers sucked out by the well-dressed warlock.
But wait, did I refer to Papa Tunde as the new big bad? What I meant to say was that Papa Tunde, with his ability to suck out vampires’ powers, was merely a pawn in Celeste’s (Shannon Kane) ultimate plot to claim New Orleans for herself. The final scene of the episode found her slitting P.T.’s throat, absorbing the powers of all the fallen supernatural creatures.
In other words, everybody’s screwed. Like, even more so than we already thought.

First of all, that headline totally rhymes. Also, I’m ready to declare this the best episode of season three — if not the series to date.
Good news: Pope and Associates finally secured a new client on the Oct. 17 episode of Scandal. Bad news: Their client, Mary Nesbitt, strapped a bomb to her chest and held a room full of people hostage at the White House — including Olivia (Kerry Washington), who was accused of being a “terrorist.”
All Mary wanted was to prove that her slain son, a suspected terrorist killed by the FBI, was actually innocent; and when no one would give her the time of day, she resorted to Plan Bomb. Through a series of favors — thank you, David (Joshua Malina)! — the truth was revealed to Liv, even if it wasn’t what she wanted to hear.

Photo: Columbia Pictures The Smurfs is one of the safest, non-offending children's films I have seen in a long, long time. It hardly evokes a reaction due to the fact it doesn't even try to evoke a reaction. Outside of a couple of funny one-liners, a bit of fun had with Hank Azaria as Gargamel and the annoying "la, la, la, la, la, la" of the little CG Smurfs, there's nothing to takeaway.
Utilizing the narrative last used by Disney's Enchanted, we begin in a land of fantastical beings. In this case we meet the three-apples-high Smurfs as they go about their daily lives, hidden in the forest from the evil wizard Gargamel who wants to capture them and extract their "Smurf essence" (yeah, this film is rife with innuendo) and become the most powerful wizard in all the land. Problem for Gargamel is he can't find their mushroom village.

I think Grouchy says it best during goodbyes with his human counterparts in The Smurfs. “I hated it so much … less than expected.” He then caps it off with, “but I did hate it”, sentiments I assumed I’d share before sitting down at my screening and was surprised to find absent. It actually isn’t that bad—but I didn’t love it.
Director Raja Gosnell is no stranger to live action/animation hybrids having helmed two Scooby Doos and a Beverly Hills Chihuahua. His decision to take on such projects may be questionable, even as he laughs himself to the bank, but I guess there is something to the gimmick being in the hands of someone who appears to believe in it. Kids love seeing their beloved characters brought to life—although I will state the obvious on wondering how much anyone under the age of twenty knows about the Smurfs; hell,...

You know a day is off to quite a cute/interesting start when you hop in the car and think to yourself "I'm going to be surrounded by all things Smurfs for most of the day." That's how one morning started for me as I sped down a wretched Los Angeles freeway over to the friendly-looking Sony Pictures Animation headquarters. The minute you stepped on their lot you were practically surrounded by Smurfs in the forms of balloons, little cardboard cut outs and tiny figurines who were happily eyeing you as you swooped in to grab the magical elixir of the caffeine gods, better known as coffee.Next thing you know, a large group of now-awake reporters were brought into a screening room. Producer Jordan Kerner went to the front of the room, explaining in detail about how they carefully put together "The Smurfs" movie in honor of its creator Peyo.

Ranbir Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan have a new hobby in common – both stars are learning to play the guitar!
While Shah Rukh is reported to have become enamoured with the instrument while on holiday in Spain, Ranbir has been taking guitar lessons to help with his role in Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film Rockstar. While Srk’s newfound passion for the guitar appears to be at this stage just a new interest, maybe he too can incorporate his hobby into a future film role just like Ranbir.
