The Flash arrived on the CW as an antidote to the heavy, bleak world of Arrow. Our Scarlet Speedster was going to be a bright, upbeat superhero series and it was—at first. With each successive season, it grew bleaker and more chaotic as an overstuffed cast all demanded screentime and the writing staff never seemed to grasp that there were other villains than those connected to the Speed Force.
The 2022-23 television season brought us The Flash’s ninth and final season, providing a chance to give closure to the core characters. Tomorrow, Warner Home Entertainment releases The Flash: The Complete Ninth and Final Season.
Across the truncated season, everyone had a moment to shine, get their due, take a bow and move aside so the Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Nora West Allen (Candice Patton) center got to have the last word as they finally welcomed Nora to the preset.

The Flash begins its final run of episodes with an hour that will delight longtime Arrowverse fans—and sets up a dramatic new possibility for the series’ endgame. “It’s My Party and I’ll Die If I Want To” may be most memorable for the fact that it brings back former Arrow stars Stephen Amell and David Ramsey—as well as The Flash favorite Keiynan Lonsdale—but it’s the show’s massive change to the very fabric of the Arrowverse as it has been understood since the events of the 2020 mega-crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths that may be the most impactful.
It’s hard to imagine an episode where Barry Allen’s death (however brief it might be) is only the third most interesting thing that happens during it, but here we are. Not only does Sendhil Ramamurthy’s villainous Bloodwork attempt...

As The Flash hit the midpoint of its final season, a visit from Nia Nal aka Dreamer brought much drama, but also some updates on Supergirl and a few of her superfriends.
For starters — and as set up during Ryan Wilder aka Batwoman’s recent visit to Central City — Nia (played by Supergirl‘s Nicole Maines) showing up unannounced at Central City Citizen Media to ask Iris for help wasn’t entirely random. Because apparently, Iris took Ryan up on her offer and recently — albeit off-screen, grrr — joined Ryan, Nia, Kara Danvers/Supergirl and her sister Alex/Sentinel for mimosa brunch.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Flash Season 9, Episode 5 “The Mask of the Red Death, Part 2.” So if you haven’t watched, hop on a cosmic treadmill and fix your timeline!] Red Death? More like Read for Filth. After weeks of attempting to eradicate Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) for crimes he allegedly committed in her alternate timeline, the red-suited, revenge-driven doppelgänger of Batwoman‘s Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie) took her final bow on the Wednesday, March 8 episode of The Flash. Picking up on the heels of last week’s Part 1, the hour saw the villainess felled not by our boy Barry, or even the rogue Rogues he’d amassed as allies, but the actual Ryan herself, in full Batwoman glory. And it was glorious. Dropping out of the sky through a cloud of smoke, cape flapping behind her, Ryan got a well-deserved hero’s entrance and got in some solid shade while battling her lookalike. “Girl, you’...

This Tuesday night, The Flash — and with eight final episodes to spare — at long last delivered on a key part of #WestAllen’s destiny, with the reveal that Iris is pregnant.
Oh, Baby!
Fans probably envisioned the lonnnnng-awaited pregnancy news being delivered a bit (Ok, a lot) differently. Like, Iris finds out on her own, then shares it with the hubs. Instead, the big moment arrived during a Team Flash & Family get-together at Joe and Cecile’s house, after Red Death had been bested and locked up at Argus. (More on that in a sec.)

The Flash Season 9 Episode 5
As the final season of The Flash barrels toward its endgame, the stakes keep getting higher. “The Mask of the Red Death, Pt. 2” not only sees Barry and Team Flash finally bring the villainous Red Death to justice, but also reveals Iris is pregnant, sees Chester and Allegra finally admit that they’re crazy about one another, and features Khione displaying some sort of strange new healing abilities that save a badly injured Mark Blaine. While these are all the sort of big narrative events that the show normally saves for a season finale, it’s the surprise return of Batwoman heroine Ryan Wilder that likely packs the biggest emotional punch.
With much of The CW Arrowverse wrapping up alongside The Flash’s final season, the fact that the show is managing to include characters from across this superhero universe is incredibly satisfying.

News of Batwoman‘s cancellation after three seasons had barely set in when that Arrowverse series’ star, Javicia Leslie, received an unexpected invitation from The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace.
“Eric first called me when the show was cancelled, and he gave me his thoughts on that,” Leslie tells TVLine with a chuckle. “Afterwards, he said, ‘Don’t you worry, I’ve got something planned for you,’ and I said, ‘Ok.’ And then maybe a month-and-a-half later, in June or July, he calls me and tells me about Red Death.

The Flash Season 9 Episode 4
The Flash continues to raise the stakes in its final season, revealing the true identity of the villainous Red Death, putting both Barry and Iris in mortal danger, and unleashing a deranged Ryan Wilder from another timeline on Central City after Team Flash thwarts her efforts to build a cosmic treadmill to send herself home.
Played by Batwoman’s Javicia Leslie, who gets to be both cunning and crazy by turns this week as a Batwoman who was raised by the Waynes and developed a dangerous obsession with her enemies’ technology and a bone-deep hatred of her world’s Flash, Red Death may be a speedster, but she’s certainly not like any villain Team Flash has seen before.

Even the most diehard Flash fan has to admit that evil speedsters are a dime a dozen. For every Barry Allen or Wally West who enters the Speed Force, there’s a Reverse Flash or Black Flash, who use their superspeed to do horrendous harm to reality. So it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to learn that in the 9th and final season of The Flash on The CW, Barry will be facing off against yet another evil speedster: the Red Death.
Say what you will about the saturation of speedsters in the world of The Flash, the origin of the Red Death in more recent DC comics does set the character apart, as does the actor playing Red Death for The CW version: Javicia Leslie, who most recently portrayed the title character on Batwoman. This makes A Lot of sense.

Javicia Leslie, who played the titular role on The CW‘s Batwoman, is returning to the Arrowverse for the ninth and final season of The Flash. As first reported by Entertainment Weekly, Leslie will appear in the upcoming season, though it’s not yet known who she will be playing nor if her part is a guest-starring role or a series-regular. Filming for the final season began in September 2022 and is set to conclude in March 2023. Leslie portrayed Ryan Wilder (aka Batwoman) on The CW’s Batwoman, a role she took over from Ruby Rose in Season 2. However, the series was suddenly canceled after three seasons back in April, a move that came as a shock to fans and critics who had praised the series for being the first network TV show with an LGBTQ superhero lead. “I was taught that words have power and we speak our life into existence,...

From the outset, the CW’s Batwoman series was one of the better offerings, thanks to a strong visual sensibility and a winning performance from Rachel Skarsten as the damaged Alice. And like every other Arrowverse show, it threatened to suffer from character bloat by the end of its second season. Thankfully, supernumerary characters and plot points were jettisoned and Javicia Leslie, as Ryan Wilder, made Batwoman her own character after Ruby Rose’s departure.
Season three, therefore, offered a lot of promise and across thirteen episodes we saw the show flirt with good, solid storytelling, too often succumbing to mind-numbing plot holes and illogic. It suffered from being hampered by the idiotic notion that Circe could waltz into the Batcave and make off with Batman’s greatest rogue weapons, all neatly fitting into a duffel bag.

Batman once said, "A hero can be anyone." And that's certainly a sentiment The CW has taken to heart. Back in July 2020, the network made history by casting Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, making her the first Black actress to suit up as Batwoman. (The 34-year-old stepped into the titular role after Ruby Rose exited the show that same year.) And, the trailblazing moments didn't stop there. Two years later, in collaboration with Ava DuVernay, they brought another Black female superhero into the fold: 17-year-old Kaci Walfall, who stars as the lead character in Naomi. So yeah, on screen they're kicking ass. And off it, they're doing the same, serving as role models to...

Naomi is the latest entry in The CW’s slate of shows based on DC Comics’ characters. Written and executive produced by Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship, and adapted from the comic book of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell for the Wonder Comics imprint, the show follows the journey of a cool, confident, comic book–loving teenager as she pursues her hidden destiny.
Naomi looks at superheroes from the perspective of the small town folks who read about it in the news. Naomi runs a Superman fan site. He is fiction in her world… until he’s not. When she misses a Superman sighting—or what everyone assumes is a “stunt”—in her small town of Port Oswego, she jumps at the opportunity to investigate the appearance. The more she looks into the stunt, the closer she gets to learning the truth about herself.

This may explain why The Flash‘s Barry Allen didn’t receive the warmest of welcomes upon super-speeding to the year 2031.
When last we tuned in, a desperate Barry had time-traveled forward 10 years to get clues about how he will one day do Earth dirty. His first stop, though, was a doozy, crashing a swanky soiree attended by Supergirl‘s Alex Danvers, Batwoman‘s Ryan Wilder and more of the Arrowverse’s finest — and where Eobard Thawne (played by former series regular Tom Cavanagh) was doting on Iris!

Now that Gotham City embraces its new Batwoman, the caped crusader is about to be awash in familiar foes—or at least versions of them. Season 2’s finale saw Batman’s collection of villain artifacts floating down the river: the Mad Hatter’s chapeau, the Penguin’s umbrella and a sprig of Poison Ivy’s plants. They won’t remain unclaimed for long. “We call them Bat trophies,” says Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries. “In the first few episodes, they start washing up on shore and we see a derivative of our old-school Bat villains take possession of them.” Leslie’s Ryan Wilder and ops pro Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson) have equally tricky family matters to handle. Riverdale vet Robin Givens is set to join as Ryan’s birth mom, tech mogul Jada Jet, and Luke discovers a mysterious link between his late father and the supersuit he’s been sporting...

Azie Tesfai plays a pivotal part on-screen on Supergirl, but the star entered the writers' room this season to co-write Supergirl Season 6 Episode 12, airing Tuesday at 9/8c on The CW.
The highly anticipated installment focuses on Kelly as she realizes that no one is helping the people of color harmed when the Ormfell building explodes.
With many in the community injured and resources scarce, Kelly sets out to even the odds and restore justice to the fallen community.
In her journey to the writers' room, Tesfai was able to take some time away from filming.
"I did the writers' room for a month, all day, every day, which was incredible," Azie explained to TV Fanatic, dishing that she got to see first-hand how storylines are formed.
"Jay and I went off to write episode 12," but the journey begun in the writers' room, with the star saying that it became really personal for her.

Batwoman‘s second season had a lot of ground to cover following the departure of Ruby Rose as Kate Kane post-Season 1. Let’s recap! Season 2 introduced Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie) as the new titular hero with Ryan finding the Batsuit among the wreckage of Kate Kane’s crashed plane. From there, she decides to use the suit to get justice for her adoptive mother’s death. Mary and Luke let Ryan keep the suit warm and keep the city safe while they wait for Kate to return, eventually growing into a tight team of their own.
Season 2 had to ask the question: what happened to Kate Kane? And devoted much of its top half exploring the answer. Kate was presumed dead after the plane crash, then thought to be Safiyah’s captive, then presumed dead again, until it was ultimately revealed that she was brainwashed by Roman Sionis to believe she was his late daughter,...

Exclusive: Another new character is heading to Gotham for the third season of Batwoman. Nick Creegan has been cast as a new series regular opposite Javicia Leslie in the CW drama series.
Creegan will play Marquis Jet. A sexy playboy who grew up in a lavish lifestyle, Marquis is too charming for his own good and wields his power with a ne’er do well attitude. He views life as one big joke and that sense of recklessness has a tendency to clash horribly with his no-nonsense mother Jada Jet. When he meets Ryan (Leslie), he sees in her a like-minded young go-getter who like him is just waiting for the right opportunity to make his mark on Gotham.
He joins recently announced new series regular Victoria Cartagena as Renee Montoya.

Exclusive: DC hero Renee Montoya is coming to the rescue in Gotham City. Victoria Cartagena has joined the upcoming third season of Batwoman as a new series regular, portraying Renee in the CW drama.
Cartagena’s Montoya is a former Gcpd officer who left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside the department. She now runs the “freaks division,” which hasn’t seen a lot of action… until now. Righteous and pragmatic, and LGBTQ+, she’s a woman with a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary.
Cartagena previously played Renee Montoya on Fox’s Gotham, though the universes are not connected.

Robin Givens is making a beeline for Gotham City!
Deadline reports that the Riverdale and Ambitions actress has joined the cast of Batwoman Season 3.
Givens has been added to the cast Jada Jet, the powerful CEO of Jet Industries.
Jet is described as a “passionate and hard-working woman” who has “worked her way through life’s ups and downs to climb her way to the top, all while being extremely protective of her impetuous son."
"A woman with a deep past that forced her to give up her first-born child, Jada is a woman with a good heart, but will do whatever it takes to protect her family.”
With that character breakdown, it's easy to assume that Jada Jet could be the mother of Ryan Wilder, the titular superhero played by Javicia Leslie.

A new Batwoman picked up the cape and cowl in Season 2 of The CW series “Batwoman.” The show shifted its narrative focus to Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie), an ex-convict who takes over the Batwoman mantle from Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) as a way to protect Gotham City and avenge her mother’s death.
With that change came a new opportunity for the show itself and especially costume designer Maya Mani. As the longtime Arrowverse fixture tells Gold Derby during the Meet the Experts: Costume Design panel, creating a new Batwoman costume with the show’s in star in mind was paramount to the process. This Batwoman article contains spoilers through Season 2, Episode 12.
This season of Batwoman started out by asking the question: what happened to Kate Kane? And the latest episode, “Initiate Self Destruct,” finally gives us some answers. After traveling to Coryana to save Kate, and discovering Safiyah lied about her being there, Jacob, Batwoman, and Alice leave the island empty handed. They return to the news that body parts positively identified as belonging to Kate Kane washed up on shore, confirming definitively that she’s dead. Later we see a woman in a cell, fully wrapped in bandages, wearing Kate Kane’s signature necklace. Kate is alive… but she doesn’t know she’s Kate. Roman Sionis (aka Black Mask) tasked Enigma with suppressing all of Kate’s memories, and making her believe she is Circe Sionis, his deceased daughter. This is the Kate we meet in this episode, hidden behind a wooden mask.
