John Carpenter's 1978 film "Halloween" begins with a prologue in 1963 wherein a six-year-old Michael Myers (Will Sandin), with no discernible motivation, takes a knife from his family kitchen, brings it upstairs, and slays his big sister Judith (Sandy Johnson). Michael was immediately taken to a mental asylum where he didn't speak a word for 15 years. His psychiatrist Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasance) tried to reach through to Michael, aiming to discern why he might have killed his sister, but ultimately found that Michael was merely, irretrievably evil. Naturally, in 1978, Michael escaped the asylum and returned to his childhood home in Haddonfield, Illinois.
There is a notable scene wherein Dr. Loomis visits the grave of Judith Myers in 1978, only to find that the tombstone had been dug up out of the ground and stolen. The tombstone will reappear late in the film when Michael, now wearing a mask and committing multiple murders,...

While the new Halloween ignores the plots of the many sequels that followed John Carpenter’s 1978 original, it doesn’t spurn the movies themselves. The film is crammed with loving homages to the franchise — even the Michael Myers-less Halloween III: Season of the Witch gets a brief shout-out. The latest Halloween installment establishes its fondness for its predecessors in the opening credits, which pay tribute to Carpenter’s progenitor with a slow push-in to a rotting pumpkin that magically restores itself to health as the camera creeps closer. Though the sequel’s production budget was a reported $10 million, only a few […]...

Audiences may not realize it, but Rough House Pictures has been a pivotal force in American filmmaking over the past decade.
People know Danny McBride as the snarky, self-aggrandizing star of HBO’s “Eastbound and Down” and “Vice Principals,” shows he created with fellow North Carolina School of the Arts alumni Jody Hill and David Gordon Green. But while McBride’s is the most public face, all three men have become influential figures in the film industry.
Green and McBride are writing the Blumhouse reboot of “Halloween,” while Hill is finishing his third film, a comedy starring Josh Brolin. Green has oscillated from the quiet, Southern gothic tales of “George Washington” and “All the Real Girls” to boisterous comedies like “Pineapple Express.” Hill’s debut, “Foot Fist Way,” got the attention of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, who launched Hill’s TV career and gave him the momentum to direct his first studio film,...

Here’s your first look at the brand new trailer for director David Gordon Green’s Our Brand Is Crisis, starring Oscar winners Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) and Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade).
The film will debut this coming weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival and then in theaters on October 30th.
In the film, a Bolivian presidential candidate failing badly in the polls enlists the firepower of an elite American management team, led by the deeply damaged but still brilliant strategist “Calamity” Jane Bodine (Bullock). In self-imposed retirement following a scandal that earned her nickname and rocked her to her core, Jane is coaxed back into the game for the chance to beat her professional nemesis, the loathsome Pat Candy (Thornton), now coaching the opposition.
But as Candy zeroes in on every vulnerability – both on and off the campaign trail – Jane is plunged into a personal crisis...

Filming is underway in New Orleans on director David Gordon Green’s (“Pineapple Express,” “George Washington”) feature adaptation of the critically acclaimed 2005 documentary Our Brand Is Crisis, starring Oscar winners Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side”) and Billy Bob Thornton (“Sling Blade”).
When a group of American consultants accept the challenge of getting an unpopular Bolivian president re-elected, they realize they need help. Tracking down retired maverick political consultant Jane Bodine (Bullock) to her cabin in the woods, they persuade her to lead the team—a decision they quickly come to regret, as “Calamity” Jane begins to live up to her nickname, unleashing her very own brand of chaos on the campaign.
Just as all seems lost, the loathsome Pat Candy (Thornton), Jane’s worst enemy, arrives in town to work for the opposition. Suddenly things become personal and as the battle begins the consultants get to see Jane the legend in action.

With the only piece of news coming from a June trade mention, we fathom that before David Gordon Green climbed onto his currently filming Joe and that he closed the books on Prince Avalanche – but not unlike his mentor Terrence Malick, he could have easily decided to put this indie comedy aside and get right to work on his latest project. Featuring Sundance vets Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch, what we do know is that Dgg collaborated once again with Producer Lisa Muskat, Composer David Wingo, Production Designer Richard A. Wright and true partner in crime Cinematographer Tim Orr. We guess he might want to premiere a smaller project at the same lieu he showed off All the Real Girls (Sundance ’03), Snow Angels (Sundance ’07) and numerous projects wearing the producer’s hat (more recently Craig Zobel’s Compliance).

The Hunger Games / Orphan‘s Isabelle Fuhrman to star in Suspiria. In David Gordon Green‘s remake of the Dario Argento horror classic, Fuhrman will play the old Jessica Harper role: an American student who discovers that her European boarding school is a coven of witches. Joining Fuhrman are Isabelle Huppert, Janet McTeer, Michael Nyqvist, and Antje Traue. According to Screen International, Wild Bunch is currently selling distribution rights at the Cannes Film Festival, which kicked off this evening. Also attached to Suspiria are costume designer Milena Canonero (Marie Antoinette, Carnage) and a couple of Green collaborators: production designer Richard A. Wright (The Sitter, Undertow) and cinematographer Tim Orr (Pineapple Express, Your Highness). David Gordon Green penned the screenplay with Christof Gebert, a sound mixer in several of Green’s films. Pure speculation: I’m assuming Isabelle Huppert will have the old Alida Valli role. If so, that’s brilliant casting,...

Hot on the heels of the announcement that spooky Isabelle Fuhrman will headline David Gordon Green's long-discussed-but-now-actually-happening "Suspiria" remake, comes word that several more actors have joined the cast. In a piece about French production company Wild Bunch's Cannes slate, ScreenDaily reports that international treasure Isabelle Huppert has joined the cast of "Suspiria" alongside Janet McTeer, Michael Nyqvist and Antje Traue. This cast is already scary good.
"Suspiria" is, of course, the remake of Dario Argento's immortal, crayon-colored 1977 horror film about a girl (fleeting cult icon Jessica Harper) who goes away to a ballet school that she slowly discovers is run by a coven of evil witches. Since "Black Swan" er, "borrowed" so much of "Suspiria's" plot, the new version will simply be about (according to the ScreenDaily report) "an American student who stumbles on a coven of witches while studying in Europe." Sounds reasonable to us.

"The Sitter" hits theaters today, featuring Jonah Hill as an inept, aimless slacker who agrees to babysit a neighbor's kids only to end up having a wild night involving high-speed car chases, an insane drug dealer, and more explosions than a Michael Bay film.
"Pineapple Express" and "Your Highness" director David Gordon Green was the man behind the camera for "The Sitter," and he recently explained to IFC why the film is yet another ode to '80s cinema, and why he considers it a "family movie" despite its "R" rating.
IFC: When we were talking about the trailer for "The Sitter," you mentioned that it was the product of your love for 1980s comedies. What was it about those films that you tried to capture with "The Sitter"?
David Gordon Green: I like movies about guys who have poor decision-making skills. Movies like that provide a lot of comic opportunity.

With the great evangelist in his twilight, his children are jostling over his image and the family name. In this week's Newsweek, Lisa Miller reports on the younger Grahams' politics, infighting-and efforts to protect their father from the press.
Billy Graham was upstairs, napping. In the kitchen of the mountaintop home where he and his wife, Ruth, raised their five children, the table was set for lunch. Except for a flickering candle on that table and the exuberant pacing of two large dogs named China and Lars, the house was still, as empty as a museum after hours. The walls-witness to so many squabbles and pranks, prayers and hymns, private conversations with would-be presidents, rock stars, and prizefighters-did not speak.

A floorboard creaked above me. May I see him? I asked. May I say hello?
No, said his son Franklin.

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog reports that John Hlavin (who worked on FX's The Shield ) has been hired to write the script for Underworld 4 for Screen Gems/Lakeshore Entertainment. Here are the facts we know - Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films in the vampire-vs.-werewolf saga, is producing with Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg and Richard Wright of Lakeshore. No director is attached as of yet. Kate Beckinsale, who starred in the first two movies, has not cut a deal to return to the series. However, she did say "I think if they came up with an amazing script I wouldn't be adverse to it," in our previous news story here . No word on if Rhona Mitra, who fronted the third film, a prequel will return either. While details are being kept...

Fox Searchlight has provided Film School Rejects with an exclusive look behind the scenes of their upcoming release Gentlemen Broncos, from Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess. As you might recall, we covered this film as part of Fantastic Fest '09, where it made it's North American premiere. In the film, Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) plays Roland Chevalier, a once-famous sci-fi writer who pilfers a story from a budding home-schooled kid named Benjamin (Michael Angarano) and passes it off as his own. Sam Rockwell stars as Bronco, the central character in Benjamin's story. In the design of the film -- which fits perfectly with previous Jared Hess works in that it is super-kitschy and very middle America weird -- production designer Richard Wright had to capture the home of Benjamin and his eccentric clothing designer mother (played by Jennifer Coolidge) with a bunch of very odd little touches. One of these touches is a cloth Jesus...

In the world of comics, a few superstar creators have made names for themselves on both Marvel and DC Comics titles. Artist Jim Lee launched "X-Men" and went on to do a classic run on "Batman." John Byrne defined "Fantastic Four" for years before redefining "Superman" in the 1980s.
Now, some of the biggest names in film are getting the chance to do the same with Marvel and DC's biggest characters, and big-name actors like Ryan Reynolds and Natalie Portman are getting the chance to define both publishers' characters for filmgoers.

- It took a gestation period of sorts for Magnolia Pictures to pick up the North American rights - but after Sundance and the recently wrapped up South by Southwest Film Festival, Craig Zobel's The Great World of Sound will now be shown in movie theatres sprinkled a little everywhere. Written by George Smith and Zobel, this follows two Southerners who unwittingly become part of a record industry scam operation. The feature combines narrative filmmaking with lead actors Patrick Healy and Kene Holliday and documentary-style "auditions" from aspiring performers unaware at the time that they were part of a film. The first-time feature director got some mentoring from one of my favorite directors around in David Gordon Green. Richard A. Wright and Melissa Palmer also produced. THR reports that indie film fans can expect an early fall release. Next question. Who will buy Dgg’s Snow Angels? ...
