Director Benjamin Millepied’s “Carmen,” a musical starring Paul Mescal, will have its West Coast premiere March 25 at the 2023 Sonoma International Film Festival (Siff).
Another debut set to take place during the five-day festival is the world premiere of “Jules,” with director Marc Turtletaub and stars Ben Kingsley and Jane Curtin planning to make an appearance for the occasion. The screening will kick off the opening night of the festival on March 22.
Capping off the event are closing night films “The Eight Mountains,” which received a grand jury prize after its Cannes premiere, and Stephen Williams’ “Chevalier.”
Including the seven U.S. premieres slated for the festival, this year’s lineup features 110 films representative of 32 countries. In total, 38 narrative features, 20 documentary features and 52 short films were selected by the festival curators.

WildAid announced it raised $2.5 million at its annual fundraising gala, “An Evening in China,” on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel.
Sponsored by Bently Heritage Estate Distillery, the gala is the organization’s largest fundraising event. WildAid, the global nonprofit organization leading the fight to end the illegal wildlife trade, announced today that it will honor actresses Bryce Dallas Howard and Danai Gurira as this year’s Wildlife Champions at its annual fundraising gala on Nov. 10 at the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel.

The showdown to who will be the next Top Chef begins tonight – the penultimate episode of season 10 has the two finalists, Brooke and Sheldon, facing off against the latest Last Chance Kitchen winner. But will it be Kristen or fan-favorite Lizzie? Whereas Dominic Mercurio expressed his respect by listening to offered advice, Art Institute of California senior graduate Dana Shaw caught my attention for his intelligent and respectful profiles of Bay Area creative personalities, including tattoo artist George Campise, artist Greg Gossel, animator Len Lye, sculptor Aj Fosik, and chefs Laurence Jossel, Tanya Holland and Martin Yan (projects available for viewing on Shaw's website). His intuitive sense of the value of artistry's social weave and his ability to spotlight the creativity of others as a form of creative self-expression spoke to me as a film journalist who consciously situates his own voice through and within the voices of others.
