The 2001 series "Star Trek: Enterprise" takes place about a century before the events of the original "Star Trek," and a lot of the technologies Trekkies took for granted hadn't been invented yet. Transporters, for instance, weren't yet safe for human use. Starships didn't have shields and instead were equipped with specialized hull plating that needed to be polarized to deflect phase cannon blasts. Instead of tractor beams, the Enterprise had grappling hooks. And, because Earth hadn't yet encountered too many alien species, there wasn't yet a workable universal translator.
That's where Ensign Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) came in. Ensign Sato was a language wunderkind whose ear for language and knack for syntax proved invaluable for making first contact with alien species. She was, however, only 22 years old when she joined the crew of the Enterprise and, like the rest of the crew, had no deep space experience. Ensign Sato was...

Since its debut in 1966, Star Trek has boldly gone to nearly every cultural aspect of modern life. The franchise has included 13 feature films with various crews, numerous board and video games, hundreds of action figures, commemorative plates — you name it, and there’s probably a version with a Starfleet logo on it.
But despite all this exploration into other media and fields, Star Trek remains best on television. And after a long drought, the franchise is finally thriving again in its original medium, despite the bumbling of its parent company Paramount. Even with Picard done and Discovery entering its fifth and final season, multiple series are still in production, including the acclaimed Strange New Worlds.
But as the greatest Trek theme song reminds us, it’s been a long road getting from there to here. The Original Series was canceled after a budget-strapped third season in 1969 and only built its following in syndication.

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

This post contains minor spoilers for The Flash movie.
Everyone talks about Batman, Spider-Man, and the X-Men when talking about the great rogues galleries in superhero comics. But the Flash belongs up there with the rest of them. Even before writer Geoff Johns made the Rogues into a sympathetic team of lovable losers during his early 2000s run, Captain Cold, the Pied Piper, and the Weather Wizard were among the most interesting baddies that cape comics had to offer.
So with Barry Allen set to make his big-screen solo (not really solo) movie debut in this year’s The Flash, fans were a little surprised to hear rumors that Dark Flash would be the primary villain, alongside Man of Steel bad guy General Zod. But thanks to a merchandising leak (via The Direct), we now have confirmation that Barry will indeed be fighting a much more intense version of himself in the Dark Flash.

Each "Star Trek" show is, despite its tendency to focus on starship and space station captains, an ensemble drama. Each series (the first two seasons of "Picard" notwithstanding) is about the workplace dynamic on board a space vessel, with characters of different backgrounds and personalities working together to solve crises. The characters may occasionally butt heads, but "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry (in)famously discouraged that sort of conflict, preferring to depict a future where everyone got along, or at least treated each other with professional respect.
The group dynamic of "Star Trek," however, occasionally led to a perhaps-unconscious reliance on certain archetypes. Each Trek show, for the most part, features Stalwart Captain, Approachable Guy, Sensitive Soul, Culture Shock Alien, The Muscle, The Broody Outsider, Impatient Weirdo, Nerdy Tech-Head, and Inexperienced Noob. These broad "types" could alternately be combined into a single character or spread among many, but one can...

There is an irony to working on an ensemble series like "Star Trek," to be sure. On the one hand, every member of the crew is vital, and watching people work together -- solving problems, and generally being resourceful and intelligent -- is the central appeal of the show. But, because each show focuses on the crew of a ship or space station, responsibilities will have to be delegated, and those with bigger, more dramatic, more commanding jobs are ultimately going to command the most screen time. The captains on "Star Trek" shows tend to be their focus, with...

Last weekend, the Television Academy presented their Governor’s Award to CBS for all of Star Trek‘s achievements over the last 52 years, commending it as a “visionary science-fiction television franchise and its legacy of boldly propelling science, society, and culture where no one has gone before.” It’s a richly deserved accolade, too, as the show has repeatedly broken new ground in what can be done on television, has impacted upon the lives of millions of people worldwide and continues to paint a positive utopia to which we can aspire.
Accepting the award were William Shatner and Star Trek: Discovery lead Sonequa Martin-Green, though there were many representatives from across the various Star Trek series in attendance as well. In fact, they all gathered for a few photos that are basically a Trekkie’s wet dream.

It was only appropriate that Billy Nye say a few words before the Governors Award presentation for Star Trek at the Creative Arts Emmys. After being introduced by Hayma Washington, Nye said of Star Trek: “It may have started off as an entertainment series but it changed the world — and I feel that it changed the world for the better.”
The monolithic sci-fi franchise, as Nye put it, looked at how takes a look at the universe and beyond in “perfect and imperfect harmony.” He also says that it embraces all categories in tonight’s ceremony. Following a reel of footage featuring all Star Trek series, he brought out a massive crowd of members of the cast and crew from the six Star Trek TV series from the original series to Star Trek: Discovery.

A thorough new leak claims to reveal a ream of major spoilers for the upcoming fifth season of The Flash. As the source is the notoriously unreliable 4Chan, we’re not sure if we can believe it, but a lot of the info shared here does sound plausible and we wouldn’t be surprised if at least some of it was on the money.
With that in mind, you might want to look away now to avoid some big surprises for the season ahead. Otherwise, check out the full leak below, but again, be warned that it’s packed with spoilers.

Dozens Of ‘Star Trek’ Actors Converge For Snoop Dogg’s Parody Pic ‘Unbelievable’ – Watch The Trailer
It’s a Trekkie delight. No idea why so many Star Trek actors thought this was a great idea, but they did. Snoop Dogg seems to be the furthest thing away from sci-fi as you can get, but he’s one of the stars Unbelievable, a parody film that uses a puppet for James T. Kirk. Watch the trailer for below.
The original score was written/composed by Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated Gerald Fried — the last living composer from the original Star Trek series.
Snoop Dogg executive produced the film from writer-director Steven Fawcette that also stars Nichelle Nichols (who also co-produced), Angelique Fawcette (also a producer), Michael Madsen and Robert Davi. [Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Star Trek: Discovery’s” episode “Vaulting Ambition.”]
“All Hail her most Imperial Majesty, Mother of the Fatherland, Overlord of Vulcan, Dominus of Qo’noS, Regina Andor. All Hail Philippa Georgiou Augustus Iaponius Centarius.”
In the Mirror Universe, Philippa Georgiou is Emperor of the Terrans, a leader who is as ruthless as she is stylish. This is reflected in her pompous but very descriptive string of titles, as well as her full tongue-twister name. But what does it all mean? Because of course, her name is not a random assemblage of words. Within those syllables lie clues to her past.

What the hell happened at the end of The Flash season 3 finale? Major spoilers ahead...
Warning: contains spoilers.
See related Bayonetta Xbox 360 review
Well, I have to hand it to the DC TV superhero universe. They sure do have some movement on their curve. Between the Supergirl season 2 finale and The Flash's Finish Line the CW has left us with two surprisingly ambiguous endings. But the ambiguity surrounding that Supergirl finale had more to do with other characters and the potential villain for next year. The Flash gave us something a little more immediately pressing... namely, the actual fate of our hero.
There are three massive questions to be answered here. I kind of have an idea of what's going on. Mostly.
Is Barry Allen dead?
What? No! Of course not. Don't you worry about a thing.

Followers of this column are about to do a double take. They will question my sanity, my constitution, and whether I’m now a pod-person. But, heed my words, for they are true.
I traveled a long and hard road from my suburban home 45 minutes north to a different suburb so that I could make a transaction I’d honestly figured I wouldn’t make for years to come. Desperate times calls for desperate measures. In this episode of The Flash, "Enter Zoom," Barry and the gang have no other option than to ask for help from Linda Park, Barry's ex-love interest and a Dr. Light look-alike. She's not an experienced member of the team, but it is the closest thing they have to a chance at catching Zoom.
While Caitlin, Cisco and an Mia Jay aren't too keen on the idea of Barry confronting Zoom, Iris is supportive. Surprisingly, she's the one to enlist the help of Linda while Barry gets Dr. Light on board.

The first clip has been released from tomorrow night’s episode of The Flash, and it features the Scarlet Speedster battling it out with Dr. Light. Of course, the twist here is that this isn’t the Earth-2 Dr. Light; it’s her doppelgänger, Linda Park – Barry Allen’s ex-girlfriend – disguised as the villain in order to fool Zoom into arriving on Earth-1 so Team Flash can attempt to trap him.

Two more names have joined the cast of The CW's "The Flash" for its upcoming second season. First up, newcomer Violett Beane has been cast as Jesse Quick, a new ally for Barry who also has super-speed powers.
In the series, she plays a brilliant, quirky college student who gets caught up in Barry Allen's (Grant Gustin) battle with Season 2's antagonist Zoom who has yet to be cast.
Also joining the cast is another villain with Demore Barnes set to play Tokamak. In the show he's a charming, but cocky scientist. When Caitlin recruits him to join the team at S.T.A.R. Labs, Hewitt jumps at the opportunity and hopes to fulfil his destiny as a powerful meta-human.
Actress Malese Jow is also slated to return as Linda Park, Iris West's colleague and Barry's past love interest, who puts both of them in unexpected danger. Also out...

As The CW’s popular small screen take on DC’s Scarlet Speedster, The Flash, gears up for its second season in less than two months, the network has released this brand new poster (which can be seen above), giving us a look at Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) doing what comes naturally while showing off his updated (well, it has a white chest emblem this time) costume.
The events of the season 1 finale opened the door (literally) for plenty of new characters and plot developments. As we race towards the advent of a Multiverse, Barry and his pals are going to have to deal with new villains such as Zoom, Tokamak, and Atom Smasher; and the arrival of new allies with speed-powers like Jay Garrick, Wally West and Jesse Quick. Plus, Mr. Allen’s love life is about to get even more complicated as old flame Linda Park is also set to return.
