Given their close-knit relationship as global entertainment industries, gaming and the movies have long had a symbiotic connection. Movie tie-in games, for instance, have been a popular feature in gaming for decades, with numerous short-form releases over the years attempting to distil linear, cinematic storylines into interactive ones — albeit with varying success.
A Brief History of Gaming and the Movies
Of course, it’s not been uncommon over the years for studios to churn out poor quality movie-tie in titles that barely represent the characters and narratives we’ve fallen for on the big screen. However, there have been some outright successes and unexpected releases in alternative gaming genres.
In addition to being video game franchises, movies have even inspired online casino games and plenty of other activities throughout the iGaming sector. IP such as King Kong, Jurassic Park and even The Lord of The Rings have all been transformed...

This holiday season’s release of Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is cause for celebration amongst slasher fans. It’s been a hot minute since mainstream horror audiences have been able to watch a wide-release slasher that feels gruesomely throwback *and* is based on a wholly original concept. Thanksgiving is a contemporary reinterpretation of cheesy 80s midnighters about masked killers and juicy, rubbery effects that hoists holiday horror back into the limelight. It’s also fair to speculate how Thanksgiving signals a possible shift in overall genre trends, but labeling Thanksgiving as the rebirth of the slasher subgenre is a bit misleading. Roth’s ooey-gooey ode to holiday horror with all the trimmings certainly sticks out in today’s horror landscape, but that’s only on surface-level evaluations.
Heck, it wasn’t even the only holiday-themed slasher in theaters this season.

They say that on quiet nights you can hear the chants coming from small Norwegian villages, "More 'Troll,' more 'Troll,' More 'Troll!'" Indeed, fans of the Norwegian straight-to-Netflix creature feature "Troll" have been famished for more troll-on-human violence since the film's release in 2022.
Directed by Roar Uthaug, the accomplished filmmaker behind high-intensity spectacles such as "The Wave" and 2018's "Tomb Raider" reboot, "Troll" was something of a surprise hit on the streaming platform. Back in December of 2022, "Troll" scored the second spot on Netflix's coveted Top 10 Most Watched list, right behind the smash hit series "Wednesday." For a foreign film dropped on the platform with little to no marketing, that's majorly impressive. Even moreso: "Troll" went on to become Netflix's most-watched non-English film of all time.

Will there be Troll 2 or Not? Let’s find out the details of the Netflix movie. It is basically Norwegian movie that got released in December 2022 and received quite positive reviews from the views as well as the critics.
And probably this positive response is the reason behind the fans speculating about Troll 2 and eagerly waiting for it. But wait what if you haven’t seen the first part of this movie you need not to worry because we are here to brief you about the basic story line of the first part of the movie.
So the story continues and is based on a folk tale where people believe that trolls used to rule the region before the Christians got rid of every one of them, except for one. That troll has been awakened in the Norwegian high mountains and has come down to seek its home.

Having seen success with last year's rocky adventure Troll, Roar Uthaug, the director of The Wave, is ready to bring the world another instalment. Netflix has ordered a sequel to Troll.
The original film chronicled the aftermath of an explosion in the Norwegian mountains, which awakens an ancient troll. The story revolves around a fearless paleontologist who embarks on a journey to stop the troll from wreaking deadly havoc.
Troll quickly became Netflix's most popular non-English film of all time, with a record-breaking 103,000,000 views in its first 91 days.
"Making Troll was a lifelong dream come true, and the reception our Norwegian movie has received around the world has been unbelievable," says Uthaug. No plot details have been revealed for the movie, other than it will explore similar fairytale territory.

Directed by Roar Uthaug, the Norwegian creature feature Troll was released through the Netflix streaming service last December – and it performed so well for the streamer, Variety reports that Netflix has now ordered a sequel! Troll 2 will see Uthaug reteaming with writer Espen Aukan and producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud of Motion Blur.
We don’t have any plot information for Troll 2 just yet, but Troll had the following synopsis: Deep inside the mountain of Dovre, something gigantic awakens after being trapped for a thousand years. Destroying everything in its path, the creature is fast approaching the capital of Norway. But how do you stop something you thought only existed in Norwegian folklore?
It’s interesting to note that, while several of Uthaug’s movies have received sequels, he hasn’t directed any of them. The Cold Prey follow-ups, the sequel to his fantasy film Magic Silver,...

Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander is finally ready to share her thoughts about Lara Croft’s future and the disappointment of watching plans for another chance to play the character go up in smoke. MGM sold the rights to the Tomb Raider franchise to Amazon Prime Video last summer, effectively killing Vikander’s chance to star in a sequel to her 2018 reboot. Rather than make a sequel to Roar Uthaug’s film, Prime Video is teaming up with writer and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star Phoebe Waller-Bridge for a TV series. Amazon wants to turn Tomb Raider into an expansive franchise. While plans for the television reboot remain a mystery, Vikander is not involved.
Speaking with Variety, Vikander told the outlet she’s grateful for the chance to have played such an iconic character and would not rule out returning if asked.

Gathering at Netflix’s Amsterdam office on Monday, multiple creatives spoke about how working with the streaming giant has allowed them to tell stories authentically and give their voices reach around the world.
Mandla Walter Dube from South Africa (Jiva!, Silverton Siege), Belgian-Dutch writer/producer Nico Moolenaar (Undercover, Ferry), Norwegian director Roar Uthaug (Troll), Jordanian director Tima Shomali (Al Rawabi School for Girls) and German writer Katharina Eyssen (The Empress) shared their experiences in an event set up for reporters.
Shomali said creating for Netflix was about “freedom” to “tell stories that I believe in and that I want to be heard.” She added: “I always call Netflix the global village of the world where all the countries meet” and creatives get a chance to be seen.
Meanwhile, Dube said the streaming company opened opportunities to storytellers. “I always tell my students: don’t go to Hollywood anymore. Let Hollywood come to you,...

The program featured over 60 on-stage speakers and was dominated by the presence of Netflix, which celebrated its 10th year in the Nordic region late last year.
“We had a great year,” Jenny Stjernströmer Björk, VP of Nordic Content at Netflix, said when asked about the streamer’s 2022 Nordic efforts on stage at the Grand Theater in Göteborg.
Björk went on to list what she described as some of the streamer’s most successful Nordic content, including the Swedish series Snabba Cash. The experienced exec also cited the Spotify origins series The Playlist, and Roar Uthaug’s folklore thriller Troll, which Björk said became the most popular non-English language film on Netflix in less than two weeks of its release.

Troll opens with a young girl and her father rock climbing in the reputed home of Norway’s trolls. When the girl professes her disbelief her father tells her to look with her heart not with her eyes and sure enough, faces become visible in the rock formations.
Twenty years later Nora is now a palaeontologist and has just made an important find. Before she can even celebrate a military helicopter arrives with orders to take her to Oslo on a matter of national security. Workers excavating a tunnel through one of those mountains have woken something up. Something big, and not very friendly. It’s a troll and not the kind that follows you around Facebook commenting “Libtard!” on everything you post.

Netflix’s Norwegian Kaiju feature, Troll, might draw easy comparisons to 2010’s Trollhunter for its Scandinavian roots and mythology, but it opts to adhere closer to Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse in plotting. While light on narrative, it’s when Cold Prey director Roar Uthaug embraces its monster that Troll reveals its magic.
A prologue sees a father tell his young daughter, Nora, of legendary trolls turned to stone, their bodies forming the mountainous peaks they look upon in awe. Twenty years later, Nora (Ine Marie Wilmann) outgrew her belief in magic and turned instead to science, now working as a paleontologist. While that means she’s been estranged from her folklorist father for years, it makes her well-suited to aid the government when an unknown destructive force of nature awakens.
Troll. (L to R) Mads Sjøgård Pettersen as Captain Kris, Kim S. Falck-Jørgensen as Andreas Isaksen, Ine Marie Wilmann as Nora.

Troll is a Norwegian-American action-fantasy movie directed by Roar Uthaug starring Ine Marie Wilmann and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen.
By the way, it has more references to Jurassic Park than it does to (due to the obvious similarities) the giant in Tokio. An adventure of the sort that entertains, and does not seek to provide more than that.
If you thought that trolls were just cute, almost harmless people leaving malicious comments on the internet, you were wrong.
Is it Godzilla? King Kong? There is a new guy in town: Troll!
Troll (2022) Premise
A paleontologist must assist in subduing and capturing a gigantic creature that has awoken in the mountain range of Dovre. This creature is running amok, destroying everything in its path, and is headed towards Oslo, the capital city of Norway. Was there some truth to Norwegian folklore, after all?
Movie Review
This is an entertaining number, but not a blockbuster.

The winter holidays are rapidly bearing down upon us, so what better way to get into the festive spirit than by streaming, er, Denis Villeneuve's dramatic thriller "Prisoners"? Luckily, for those who are not in the mood to watch Hugh Jackman brutalize Paul Dano for two-and-a-half hours, there are plenty of alternate options to choose from on Netflix this December.
In keeping with tradition, the final month of 2022 will see an eclectic mix of genre films and TV series make their way onto the streamer, along with more than a few awards season hopefuls. The latter group's ranks include a new screen take on D.H. Lawrence's classic erotic novel "Lady Chatterley's Lover" and a movie adaptation of "Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical." Then there are the latest films from multi-hyphenates Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Noah Baumbach ("White Noise"), on top of a pair of much-buzzed-about director-driven features that we will get to later.

A new kaiju movie is coming to Netflix from Norway, and it looks like a blast. Today we have a trailer for "Troll," and we're not talking about the oh-so-delightful denizens of social media who will argue with and threaten you over even simple statements such as, "I like cheese." No, these are the trolls of folktales and legends, and they're much bigger than you might expect from the beginning of this trailer.
"Troll" comes to us from director Roar Uthaug (who also has a story by credit for the film). He's responsible for "The Wave" and 2018's "Tomb Raider" starring Alicia Vikander and Dominic West. The script was written by Espen Aukan ("Baby Boom").
When I say this is a kaiju movie, it's because this troll is huge, but also because the human characters discover a giant footprint, leading the dismissive officials to ask if this is King Kong.

The characters in the Norwegian slasher franchise Cold Prey may be accustomed to harsh and wintry climates, but they’re not prepared for a pickaxe-wielding killer with almost superhuman stamina. The first stab in this successful trilogy made its way into theaters in 2006, on a Friday the 13th, no less. Five characters go on a ski trip in Jotunheimen, and when someone gets injured, they find shelter at the abandoned ski lodge on the mountain. As they wait for help to come, the group slowly realizes the place isn’t so empty after all. A serial killer inhabits the old hotel with a long and dark history. This ruthless and stoic assailant, referred to as the Mountain Man, then proceeds to butcher his unwelcome guests.

MGM no longer holds rights to produce the Tomb Raider film franchise, which has spawned three movies with the most recent in 2018 starring Alicia Vikander. The actress is no longer attached to a planned sequel, and Graham King’s Gk Films is now shopping rights and seeking a new lead, Deadline has confirmed.

Lara Croft has hit a snag ahead of the “Tomb Raider” sequel.
Alicia Vikander, who starred as the video-game heroine in the revival 2018 film, told Entertainment Weekly that a follow-up is “in somebody else’s hands” after the Amazon buyout of MGM for 8.5 billion in March 2022. A sequel to “Tomb Raider” was previously announced with “Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Tyler attached to write and direct.
“With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it’s kind of politics,” Vikander explained. “I think Misha and I have been ready, so it’s kind of in somebody else’s hands, to be honest.”
While Vikander “can’t really say” much about Green’s update on Croft, the film will no doubt pick up after the events of the 2018 film helmed by Roar Uthaug and detailing Croft’s origin story inspired by her father (Dominic West) and his quest for an ancient Japanese statue.

Norwegian disaster movies The Wave and The Quake marked out an interesting middle ground in the genre. They eschewed the tiny, insular, approach of something like Right At Your Door, but didn’t quite have the budget to compete with the vast scale of the likes of Roland Emmerich’s CGI choked productions, but they turned their limitations very much to their advantage. Where Emmerich and others in Hollywood tend to favour spectacle over emotion, these films leaned in to character, and deployed their limited but high quality effects to make us feel the peril and therefore identify with the well drawn characters.
The Burning Sea, to my slight disappointment, doesn’t follow Kristoffer Joner’s character into yet another disaster, as if he were John McClane but it was nature, rather than terrorists, repeatedly trying to kill him. Instead, the film focuses on Sofia (Kristine Kujath Thorp), a robot...

Finland has responded to a spike in demand for its content with a slew of new series. As revealed by Laura Kuulasmaa, executive director at Audiovisual Producers Finland (Apfi), over 30 will be released this year alone, a 20% uptick on 2018.
“Compared to eight, ten years ago, when there were maybe only five scripted series per year, the increase has been huge,” she tells Variety ahead of French TV festival Series Mania’s “Focus on Finland” showcase.
The Film in Finland cash rebate has facilitated international investments and growth of the budgets, she notes.
Matti Paunio, head of production at the Finnish Film Foundation, adds:
“I think the biggest trend overall is the diversification of subjects and points of view. Scripts and series are more courageous, they take on different genres more often than ever. Production is booming, but apart from the quantity, we are also providing quality.”

MGM and Warner Bros. are moving forward with a sequel to director Roar Uthaug’s Tomb Raider and Alicia Vikander is set to reprise her role. The news comes from Deadline, who also reports that Amy Jump is writing the script and apparently Vikander likes what she is doing with her character.
Jump is best known for her work on the action film Free Fire, Kill List, A Field In England, Sightseers, and High-Rise. Yes, she works a lot with director Ben Wheatley.
There are no story details regarding the sequel, but I personally really enjoyed the first Tomb Raider movie that Vikander starred in. I thought it was an incredibly fun adventure film and I hoped that we would get to see a sequel, so that fact that it’s happening is great!
What are you thoughts on Vikander’s Tomb Raider franchise and the fact that it’s getting a sequel?...
