Warning: contains spoilers for the Shetland series eight finale.
When Di Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) was asked at the end of Shetland series eight when she’d be leaving the isles, she answered: “Actually, not for a while.” Having repaired her relationship with her estranged brother and dealt with some old demons, Ruth planned to stick around. Long enough it seems, to lead the cast of Shetland series nine and ten.
The BBC has commissioned two further series of the picturesque crime drama starring Jensen in the lead role of Di Calder. Filming on series nine begins in March 2024, with filming on series 10 to follow in 2025. Fans can expect the show to return to BBC One either in late 2024 or early 2025. We’ll keep you posted as more news arrives.

After Di Jimmy Perez deliberately sacrificed his career in the name of justice (if not the law) and went off to pastures new with nurse Meg at the end of series seven, Shetland now has a new sheriff in town. Sort of.
While DS Tosh performs the duties of acting Di at Lerwick Police Station, detective Ruth Calder has come up from London in search of a missing witness in a serious crime case. It just so happens that Calder is an old Shetlander who left the islands as a teenager and was glad to be rid of the place, where she’s confronted by some old ghosts.
Ugly Betty and Agatha Raisin’s Ashley Jensen plays Calder, along with a new guest cast of Scottish stars as well as Shetland’s returning favourites. The latter includes Alison O’Donnell as DS Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh, Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson,...

Flynn died on Saturday morning due to an unknown illness, his production company told The Irish Times in a statement. He was surrounded by his family, wife Juanita Wilson and children Alex and Anna.

Tosh, Sandy and Billy’s new guvnor has been confirmed by the BBC: Agatha Raisin star Ashley Jensen will head up the Shetland investigatory team as new character Di Ruth Calder in series eight of the Scottish crime drama. Calder is “a native Shetlander who returns to the isles after 20 years working for the Met in London.” She’s a fish out of water back in water then, and will presumably come with her own share of personal complications, grudges and history with the rest of the locals.
Jensen’s casting follows Douglas Henshall’s exit in the series seven finale, after the actor decided to leave the role of Di Jimmy Perez behind. Perez wasn’t – as some had predicted – blown up in an eco-terrorism plot, but allowed to walk away intact with love interest Meg on his arm. Shetland’s Series 7 return is a bittersweet one for fans of the Scottish BBC crime drama. The six-episode run will be actor Douglas Henshall’s last in the lead role of Di Jimmy Perez. Henshall’s departure though, doesn’t mean the end for Shetland, which has been renewed for an eighth series due to arrive in 2023. A new, as-yet-unannounced, lead actor will be joining the returning cast for that run.
Series 7, which starts on BBC One on Wednesday the 10th of August at 9pm, promises to tie up Perez’s loose ends and follow up on last series’ will-they-won’t-they frisson with Irish carer Meg. Before Perez says his final goodbye to the evidence board though, there’s a missing person case to solve, and a host of new characters to interrogate. Here’s who he’ll be meeting…

"It's a small town, Jean." Good Deed Entertainment has released the official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled Tell It to the Bees, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. Based on Fiona Shaw's novel of the same name, the lesbian love story is set in England in the 1950s. A doctor returns to her small town to take over her father's medical practice, and falls for a mother of a lonely young boy whom she befriends. Of course, the local townspeople don't accept them being together, and their romance causes an upheaval in the town. The title refers to the bees that the doctor keeps, and the young boy she befriends who she instructs to tell his secrets to the bees, as she once did. Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger star, with Emun Elliott, Steven Robertson, Lauren Lyle, Gregor Selkirk, and Katie Dickie. Take a look.

While you weren't looking, the latest chapter of the usually thrilling Syfy series, Channel Zero, has booked its return.
In an unusual move, Dream Door is considered the second half of Channel Zero Season 2 and will be airing all six of its episodes on succeeding days beginning October 26 through October 31.
Since the premiere of Channel Zero: Candle Cove, the series has done much to prove horror can be done well on network television. The key is short, focused seasons and an anthology format.
There needed to be a bump in the road eventually, and Dream Door doesn't live up to the others.
The Dream Door installment of Channel Zero is based upon a creepypasta short story titled "Hidden Door" by Charlotte Bywater.
From what I understand, there are liberties taken with all of the stories, so this review isn't a judgment on the original story that I haven't read. It's...

Three weeks into its latest run and, despite being filleted by critics for having its ratings trampled on by big rugby men, Doctor Who is ably demonstrating its power of enormous variety, jumping from a bonkers premiere to a bleak episode two, to - this week - a throughly traditional outing.
The 'base under siege' plot - our heroes and a motley crew trapped in an enclosed space - has been a Doctor Who staple for decades. One series, back in 1967, even replicated the formula for all but one story.
Since the show's resurgence, we've again seen countless examples of the type - 2005's 'Dalek', 2006's 'The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit', 2011's 'The Rebel Flesh / The Almost People', and more.
The latest script offering from Being Human creator Toby Whithouse, 'Under the Lake' also borrows the notion of an untranslatable language from 'The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit', while...

New pictures from 'Under the Lake' have been unveiled, giving us a closer look at the new episode from writer Toby Whithouse.
A classic 'base under siege' tale, 'Under the Lake' tasks the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) with protecting a terrified crew from a seemingly impossible threat.
What's behind these frightening events? And can the creatures haunting our heroes possibly be 100% genuine ghosts?
The Missing actor Arsher Ali, Grantchester's Morven Christie and Steven Robertson - late of Whithouse's Being Human - will all appear in the episode.
Under the Lake airs this Saturday (October 3) at 8.25pm on BBC One.
As is the tradition this year on Doctor Who, It's the first of a two-parter, with part two - 'Before the Flood' - following on October 10.

Being Human star Steven Robertson has promised that fans will be "blown away" by the final episodes.
Robertson - who also appears in BBC One's new drama Shetland - plays Mr Rook in the cult drama, which will come to an end next month.
"It's sad that there's only two episodes left to come out, but there's a lot in them!" the Scottish actor told Digital Spy. "There's some really interesting storylines with Rook still to come.
"I really enjoyed making episode five - the one up next. Emotionally, it's probably the toughest one for Rook."
Robertson added that episode six - the show's finale - boasts "three fantastic performances" from leads Damien Molony (Hal), Michael Socha (Tom) and Kate Bracken (Alex).
"I know for a fact that the people who have stuck with the show all this time are going to be blown away by the lead cast," he said.

Joe Utichi contributes to Deadline’s UK coverage. The current series of BBC Three hit Being Human, about a trio of supernatural roommates, will be its last. The characters will face the Devil himself in the program’s “apocalyptic end”, the BBC said. The show, which started airing its fifth series February 3, was created by Toby Whithouse and began life as a stand-alone pilot starring Andrea Riseborough, Russell Tovey and Guy Flanagan. Only Tovey carried over to the series, which has featured revolving main players like Lenora Crichlow, Aidan Turner and Sinead Keenan. Season 5′s cast of Michael Socha, Damien Molony, Kate Bracken and Steven Robertson will see the show out. A U.S. adaptation is currently airing an all-new third season on Syfy; the original has been a hit on BBC America since debuting in 2009.

By the end of Being Human’s transitional fourth season the last of the remaining original cast members had departed for pastures new. There was certainly a divide within the fan community over the future of their once beloved supernatural show, budget cuts at the BBC lead to a six episode order for the new series which returned to BBC Three Sunday night.
Our new trinity of housemates are having a tough time getting on, vampire Hal (Damien Molony) is trying to remain blood free but being tied to a chair in a messy house threatens to send him over the edge. Werewolf Tom (Michael Socha) is taking those all important steps to adulthood and new ghost on the scene Alex (Kate Bracken) is on the hunt to locate her body to pass over as quickly as possible.

In an old B&B in a sleepy seaside town, we join Annie (Lenora Crichlow) and her housemates Tom (Michael Socha) and Hal (Damien Molony). With a newborn baby to look after, it’s never been more difficult to live life under-the-radar as a ghost, a werewolf, and a vampire. There are also other vampires to deal with: lurking in every corner of society, waiting for the Old Ones, powerful older vampires, to arrive and take over the world with brutal force. Worse yet, there’s a malevolent ghost on the loose and someone’s seeking to expose the existence of werewolves – not to mention all the diapers that need changing.

Joyeux NOËL / Merry Christmas (2005) Direction and screenplay: Christian Carion Cast: Guillaume Canet, Daniel Brühl, Benno Fürmann, Diane Kruger, Alex Ferns, Gary Lewis, Dany Boon, Lucas Belvaux, Steven Robertson, Ian Richardson, Michel Serrault, Suzanne Flon Oscar Movies Recommended with Reservations Alex Ferns, Daniel Brühl, Guillaume Canet, Merry Christmas Inspired by an actual World War I ceasefire that took place around Christmastime 1914, director-screenwriter Christian Carion's Merry Christmas is a tad more conventional and old-fashioned than it should have been. The film even features a troop idiot akin to those of countless other war movies as (unfunny) comic relief. Compounding matters, most of the performances are disappointingly below par, the chief exceptions being Guillaume Canet's French officer and Steven Robertson as a low-key Scot whose very essence is destroyed by what he experiences in the trenches. Yet, despite its not inconsiderable flaws Merry Christmas is a mostly effective — and ever timely...

Graham Greene's Brighton Rock is a well-reviewed (going on my list) crime thriller about a young, handsome and charismatic lad who recklessly and ruthlessly attempts to climb quickly to the top of an organized crime group. IFC just picked up the U.S. distribution rights for the film, Rowan Joffe's (he wrote the screenplay for 28 Weeks Later) feature debut. Brighton Rock boasts a spectacular cast headed by scary/pretty boy Sam Riley (Control):
Riley strikes just the right note as would-be gangster Pinkie, who aims to seduce and marry young Rose (Andrea Riseborough Never Let Me Go), who found key evidence linking him to a murder. A stunningly gorgeous, ginger Helen Mirren stars as Ida, friend of the deceased and Rose's employer; Ida is onto Pinkie and determined to see him taken down. Rounding out the cast are John Hurt, Andy Serkis, Sean Harris and Steven Robertson.
