7 Pirate Games to Sink Your Sword Into if You Missed out on PlayStation’s Sea of Thieves Closed Beta
Sea of Thieves was a massive hit for Xbox. The title frequently received updates and new content, ensuring it stayed relevant in the grand scheme. A closed beta was also announced after it was confirmed to be coming to PlayStation.
However, as the name implies, not everyone can make it to the closed beta, and only a few can sail the high seas with the ship’s crew of their choice. But there are still other titles that should whet your appetite before the title’s full release on the PS5.

The history of gaming is often charted by citing milestone releases. We love them, you love them, and we’ve all talked about them. However, the cultural prevalence of those games means that they sometimes dominate the conversation in a way that leads to other games being lost in the shuffle. Not just lesser releases, mind you, but games that changed the industry in many ways.
Today, we’re going to look at a few of those games. While we sadly won’t be able to discuss all the games that deserve to be talked about in relation to this particular subject, we hope that shining a light on a few of these titles will reveal entirely new ways to look at the evolution of gaming.
Colossal Cave Adventure (1976/1977)
At the very least, Colossal Cave Adventure has to be considered the first adventure game. However, even that statement sells its accomplishments short.

It hardly seems real, but pirate action-adventure Skull and Bones is an actual finished game you can go buy and play right now, 11 years after Ubisoft first started production on the title and seven years since it was unveiled at a 2017 E3 presentation (remember those?). The open-world title you’ll get out of the box emphasizes naval battles, ship building, and exploration, but the game infamously changed shapes multiple times during its long, tortured development cycle, with false starts and delays turning it into one of the most troubled Aaa productions of the last decade.
Skull and Bones began life as an expansion for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag before Ubisoft turned the project into a full-blown Mmo spinoff called Black Flag Infinite to add a live service component on the ship combat mechanics fans loved from its predecessor. But those were just two iterations of the game.

In the modern video game industry, almost every developer and publisher has their eyes on starting a franchise from day one of development. Features get cut that would fit better in a sequel. Plot points are set up for a future game. If you can franchise something, you can make a lot more money.
But sometimes, those plans don’t quite work out. A game sells well, a sequel gets greenlit, and for whatever reason, it barely makes a dent in the gaming consciousness, or maybe it never even makes its way to the West. Some of these sequels were stumbling blocks in bigger franchises, or offshoots that got stuck on platforms with small userbases. And a few seemed poised for bigger things but never quite caught on. Regardless of the how or why, these are some of the most notable video game sequels you probably forgot existed.

After about four years of the Wii U, Nintendo fans everywhere were more than ready for its successor. While there were plenty of great games on the doomed platform, the Wii U just never caught fire with the public at large. Several years into the Switch’s lifespan, though, it’s clear that Nintendo has turned things around dramatically.
Instead of winding things down, the Switch shows no signs of slowing down, with plenty of excellent third-party games in its library, as well as more than a few innovative titles from the Big N as well. The platform has also been a great way to bring underrated Wii U gems to a broader audience of Switch adopters.
While the Switch’s run isn’t done yet, these are the very best games available for the portable-console hybrid (for now):

Microsoft’s continued efforts to deliver triple-a content for budget prices continues today with a new promotion and, as always, you only have a limited time to take advantage of this particular offer, which ends on July 26th. So you’ll definitely want to act fast.
In fact, if you’ve got some time to kill this weekend, there’s absolutely no reason not to download any of these three Xbox One titles, as they’re completely free throughout the three-day period and are all worth a look. Those currently subscribed to Microsoft’s Game Pass service will no doubt be familiar with how the system works, though the one key difference here, of course, is that they won’t remain available free of charge once the trial period ends.

“Death Stranding” swept the Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.) Awards, including winning the top prize of audio of the year. For the first time, the G.A.N.G. Awards were streamed live on Twitch.tv and featured a pre- and post-show on Wednesday night.
A genre-defying action experience by Kojima Productions, “Death Stranding” also won sound design of the year. Other winners of the evening included “Cordova’s Theme” from “Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order” for best original choral composition and “Call of Duty: Mobile” for best sound design in a casual/social game.
Said G.A.N.G. president Brian Schmidt: “In this our 18th year, we again recognize the highest achievements in game music, sound and dialogue. We are also excited to round out our indie categories with the new best dialogue for an indie game award, helping recognize the amazing work done by the smallest of teams.

Bearing in mind that some of my defining memories of childhood come from playing board games that predate even 8 Bit videogames, much of my fascination with ancient and fantastic worlds came from board games. The first time I saw Petra was probably in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but it wasn’t long after that when I found myself exploring suspiciously similar ruins in Tomb Raider, and even reconstructing the famous city in Sid Meier’s Civilization. Despite these appearances in more popular media, I’ve yet to see Petra appear in a board game at all. Passing Through Petra changes that by making the ancient city and its famously imposing entryway (a ravine known as The Siq) the absolute focal point of the gameplay.

On top of a slew of new announcements during the latest Nintendo Direct, we have the official announcement of Civilization VI arriving on the Switch. Come inside to check out the trailer and details!
Rejoice Civilization fans who want to take their societies on the go! Although the word leaked out last week, yesterday's Nintendo Direct confirmed that Firaxis and 2K are bringing Civilization VI to the Nintendo Switch. I've been dying for more strategy/sim games to come to the platform, and thankfully, they're starting to. Something as big as the Civilization franchise on the console gives me hope for even more to come.
I love these kinds of games, but with all the kids in the house (and a toddler), sitting down at the computer to strategize for a few hours is almost impossible. Doing it in quick 10-15 spurts, where I can put things into "sleep mode...

Olivia Munn awarded the golden buzzer on Tuesday’s episode of “America’s Got Talent” to a choir which performed the theme of “Civilization IV.”
The Swahili theme song, Baba Yetu, was composed by Christoper Tin for 2005’s “Civilization IV,” and was the first video game featured song to win a Grammy. On America’s Got Talent, the Angel City Chorale performed the song on Tuesday, and Munn surprised the choir and the audience by awarding the performance with the golden buzzer. When the golden buzzer is pressed by a judge, it means that the act will skip the rest of the audition process and skip to the live show in the program. Each judge is only allowed one golden buzzer selection per season.

2K and Firaxis Games today revealed that Tamar will lead Georgia in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Rise and Fall. Tamar is one of the nine new leaders coming in the expansion, which releases on February 8th 2018.
Tamar was a strong patron of the arts. She bolstered trade and commerce, and minted coins bearing her monogram and titles. Laws were codified. Churches and cathedrals were built. Georgian culture developed as a strong and lively blend of Byzantine Christianity and Persian-inspired ideas. She came to power in a divided kingdom, and left it larger, more powerful, and sure of its cultural identity. She is canonized as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox faith, and a national symbol for Georgians even today.

Sid Meier’s famous Civilization series is among the most revered video games of all time, having featured six core versions, a raft of expansions and several spin offs and sister series. The original Civilization is now over twenty years old, but perhaps the most impressive thing about it is the fact that the basic, turn based gameplay that made it so successful has never really changed. What began as a complex and strategic digital board game remains just that, even if new mechanics like culture, religion and complex combat are now presented with incredible visual fidelity.
Another way that players have been able to get their Civilization fix for many years is via one of several spin off board games, whether officially licensed as such or just clearly influenced by the video game. The subject of today’s review is Civilization: A New Dawn, the latest game to bear...

In the best deal the game has seen in a long time, Sid Meier's Civilization VI is down to $39.99. Launch reception of the game wasn't as high as Civ V, but still respectable, and the game recently deployed a bunch of Dlc and balance changes that by many accounts should improve the game for the better. That's usually true with most Civilization games, so jumping in now at half the price at launch is a win win. Check out the trailer below and continue on for the deal...read more on GameTyrant

Sid Meier's Civilization VI release is swiftly approaching and with it comes new information about early access to a certain Aztec army! Come inside for more information!
Montezuma I, born in 1398, was the fifth king of the city of Tenochtitlan and second emperor of the Aztecs. His 29-year reign was categorized by a major consolidation and expansion of the Aztec Empire, also known as the Triple Alliance, as well as enacting a new series of sumptuary laws – which aim to curb rampant consumption of goods and decadent lifestyles – that reinforced an already existing class system permeating every facet of Aztec life.
Montezuma I’s reign ended when he passed away from unknown causes in 1469 Ad. He was succeeded by his 19-year-old son Axayacatl, who later sired Montezuma II – the Aztec leader who managed to lose it all to Hernan Cortes and his group of conquistadors.

Over the last few weeks, 2K and Firaxis Games have slowly been revealing the many leaders who will take center stage in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. While historic figures such as Queen Victoria and Teddy Roosevelt have already been showcased, today they’ve announced that Cleopatra will be heading up the Egyptian empire.
As the leader of Egypt, Cleopatra will have a few resources at her disposal, making her a valuable ally should you choose to form an alliance with her. Most notably, her control over the Nile River not only grants her access to a nearby water source for use in growing crops and other resources, but provides her valuable trade routes that can be used to access nearby domains.
Aside from the resources her kingdom provides from a geographical standpoint, Cleopatra also has access to unique units. The Maryannu Chariot Archer is an elite unit in the...

Making and drawing comparisons between games is a double-edged sword when it comes to reviews, in my eye at least. On one hand, comparing and contrasting is one of the more effective tools that one can use to inform and get one’s point across, and when it comes to games, there are plenty of differences and similarities among titles which helps to facilitate this style of writing.
However, focusing one’s critique around comparing one game against another could backfire, alienating readers who don’t know much about either game. In essence, a lost in translation moment. Because of that, I try to shy away from making comparisons one after the other, because I can’t assume that my audience is as informed about a particular game or subject as required.
This time, I think that line of logic has to be abandoned.
There are probably a few exceptions,...

Civilization: Beyond Earth – Rising Tide is the long awaited expansion pack for Civilization: Beyond Earth - a spiritual successor to Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri - and there’s a particular reason why it’s been ‘long awaited.’ You see, Beyond Earth was first released to a positive but muted response for several reasons, most notably due to a lack of complexity and personality. As such, there is hope amongst fans that Rising Tide will help Beyond Earth fulfil its potential, much in the same way that Civilization V slowly evolved into a masterpiece only after the release of several expansions and updates.
Indeed, there is a lot of new stuff to be found in the Rising Tide expansion pack. There’s new aquatic gameplay, including ocean cities and sea monsters. There’s new units, such as the patrol boat and submarine. There’s even a new diplomacy system. The...

As the successor to the critically acclaimed Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri, Civilization: Beyond Earth was both a success and a frustration. Like its predecessor, Beyond Earth swapped ancient empires and historical, nuke-happy warmongers (we’re looking at you, Gandhi) for space colonies and alien worlds. The game received praise upon release, but some found it lacking depth and complexity, especially in comparison to Civilization V. Thankfully, Beyond Earth’s first expansion pack, Civilization: Beyond Earth – Rising Tide, promises to add a number of much-needed new features and layers of strategy into the game.
Obviously, the most important addition in Rising Tide is the inclusion of aquatic gameplay. When I first landed on my new world and established a colony for the glory of the Slavic Federation, the significance of the oceans were immediately apparent. The waters around my settlement were brimming with resources to claim and sea monsters to destroy,...

I’ll be the first to admit; when it comes to Sid Meier’s Civilization games (or any 4X game for that matter), I am far from what you would call “well versed.” While my Steam library is more than chalk-full of various strategy titles, the dedication and time committal which is inherent to the genre has been a deterrent, as I prefer to focus my time playing many different games rather than hunkering down and sinking dozens of hours into a select few.
When I heard about Sid Meier’s Starships, I was intrigued at the onset, as it was being touted as a more pared-back version of the flagship series; a design choice that is attractive to genre newcomers, such as myself.
Still, I was a bit confused when I actually got down to playing it. After a quick installation, I double-checked the system requirements (just to be...

Firaxis Games has revealed that their galactic conquest game, Sid Meier’s Starships will be arriving on March 12 for $14.99 on iPad, PC, and Mac.
The space bound Rts encourages player exploration by rewarding the brave and the bold with rewards to help them construct a powerful federation fleet and expand your galactic reach. Starships’ exploration elements can be further expanded by cross-connecting your game with your progress in Sid Meier’s Beyond Earth.
Precise details on how “cross-connectivity” will work between Starships and Beyond Earth have remained scarce, but a recent blog post from Firaxis Games’ community manager David Hinkle sheds light on how both teams are implementing the feature.
“This is our first experiment with this cross-game connectivity. We’re handling this through my2K. If you log into your my2K account within Starships or Beyond Earth, then we will be able to establish a connection between the two games.

Publisher Take-Two has announced via a fiscal report that Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V has now sold a staggering 45 million copies as of December 31, 2014.
Thanks in large part to the recent PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, this figure has set a whole new record for the studio’s monumental open-world franchise, and that’s all without taking the PC port into consideration, which is now due to launch on March 24 following a string of delays. According to Take-Two’s report, Grand Theft Auto V has already amassed close to 10 million sales on current-gen systems, and given the passionate modding community that have been waiting for the sequel with open arms, we can readily expect that lifetime sales will continue to climb at a steady rate.
Having launched across PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in September of 2013, Rockstar’s magnum opus continues to stay relevant thanks to the game’s ever-evolving GTA Online.

Publisher 2K and Firaxis Games have formally revealed Sid Meier’s Starships, an adventure-driven strategy title that takes place in the same universe as last year’s Beyond Earth.
It’s coming sooner than expected, too, with the developer confirming plans to release the space-set adveture in the early stages of 2015 across PC, Mac and iPad. Much like Beyond Earth, players will have the ability to build and command a fleet of starships, with the core story orbiting around the far-flung population of planet Earth, who reach out to the new civilization via a distress call.
In tandem with the announcement, Meier himself touched upon the inspirations behind the title, and how he hopes Starships can iterate on a lot of the foundations that were laid in last year’s space sim.

And while forty-eight hours isn’t nearly enough time to experience the full range of features within Civ 5, it’s still a nice incentive for the studio to offer to fans in the build-up to Thursday’s new release.

Firaxis Games has unveiled the latest clip for its upcoming turn-based strategy game, Civilization: Beyond Earth, which leaves behind our humble pale blue dot as humanity departs for the stars.
The latest entry into Sid Meier’s revered series has been described as the spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri, another title produced by Meier that hit PC all the way back in 1999. In fact, Beyond Earth marks the first time that the Civilisation IP has taken place in the future, which opens up a host of new gameplay opportunities as you seek out to divide and conquer the dark recesses of space.
From the above footage, we gather that humanity has caused (or, for you optimists out there) been subjected to a catastrophic event known as “The Great Mistake”, which forces mankind to venture out into the final frontier in search of a new home. A plot not too dissimilar...

Microsoft’s Games With Gold promotion continues this month with a pair of intriguing titles that might be slightly old, but are still worth checking out nonetheless.
As of yesterday, Xbox 360 owners can download Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution, a streamlined console version of the classic PC franchise, for free. Originally released in 2008, this instalment once again tasks gamers with expanding their civilization from simple origins in 4000 BC up until the space age and beyond, with victory being possible through a variety of means. Civilization Revolution may not be as deep as the more recent Civilization V, but it is a faithful port of the strategy series and has an impressive 84% score on Metacritic.
Just like every other month, the available title switches half-way through, this time with Dungeon Defenders taking over on March 16th. Part tower defense and part RPG, Dungeon Defenders is a co-op experience that was released...

Gran Turismo fans are some of the most passionate fans I can imagine a sports or racing game series having. That’s no slight, either – people get incredibly excited every time a new Gt finally becomes available, and a large part of the that has to do with the passion and life’s work of series creator Kazunori Yamauchi. Sony recognizes this, and to prove it they’ll be releasing a documentary about the man, titled Kaz: Pushing the Virtual Divide.
Now, I’m all for celebrating brilliant gaming minds, but isn’t it a little bit of a stretch to compare Kaz to Ferdinand Magellan, of all people? Apparently the trailer doesn’t think so. It got it’s point across — that Kaz is a driven visionary — but why not compare him to Miyamoto, or Sid Meier? Even an iconic film director would have made sense. But a guy who literally circumnavigated the earth?...

I'm standing on the deck of a double-masted sailing ship, spinning the wheel and ordering the crew to unfurl our full sails so we can race across the waves in search of loot, plunder, and booty. Nearby, two ships are engaged in a duel of cannon fire, and a bell rings overhead to warn me that another ship has turned to pursue us. I need to drop the ship's diving bell over the side of the ship near the wrecked hull of an unfortunate vessel so I can collect some of the rich stuff on the bottom of the ocean, but before I can do that, it'll be smoke and swordplay. Except I'm actually in a hotel suite in Seattle, while a member of Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag" team takes me through the paces, and tries to make sure that I don't run my ship aground on a...
