One of my favorite movies from SXSW Film Festival earlier this year was Slash/Back, a fantastically creative tale that follows a group of young girls who are tasked with saving their small community of Pangnirtung, Nunavut from tentacled aliens. The film, which could be compared to a mashup of Attack the Block and The Thing, not only showcases a group of fierce, feminist, Indigenous girls kicking alien ass, it left me with a smile on my face.
Written by Nyla Innuksuk, in her screenwriting debut, and Ryan Cavan (Sinister Switch), and directed by Innuksuk in her directorial debut, Slash/Back features wonderful performances by its young cast, which includes Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Vincent-Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth and Chelsea Prusky. Slash/Back was filmed on location in Pang and utilized a combination of practical effects and CGI to create the spectacular alien effects.

"What they don't know, is that we're the best hunters there is." Rlje Films + Shudder have revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Slash/Back, which first premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival. This radical little indie sci-fi is about a group of teenage Inuit girls from Pangnirtung, Nunavut (see Google Maps) - a town way, way up on the North East coast of Canada - closer to Greenland than anywhere else. When Maika and her ragtag friends discover an alien invasion in their tiny arctic hamlet, it's up to them to save the day. Utilizing their makeshift weapons and horror movie knowledge, the aliens realize you don't mess with girls from Pang. Starring Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Vincent-Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth, and Chelsea Prusky. It was co-written with Ryan Cavan with Nyla Innuksuk, making her feature screenwriting and directorial debut. It's landing in theaters in October! This is pretty...

A group of resourceful teenagers defend their island community in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, from body-possessing extraterrestrials in the official trailer for Slash/Back, coming to theaters, On Demand, and Digital on October 21st via Rlje Films before heading to Shudder later this year.
Directed by Nyla Innuksuk and written by Innuksuk and Ryan Cavan, Slash/Back stars Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Vincent-Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth, and Chelsea Prusky.
I had a chance to see Slash/Back through Popcorn Frights Film Festival this year, and it's an absolute blast with compelling characters and creepy extraterrestrial effects that pay homage to John Carpenter's The Thing.

Shot in and around the remote fishing village of Pangnirtung near the arctic circle, Nyla Innuksuk’s debut feature Slash/Back opens with a researcher taking permafrost samples discovering a smoking hole in the tundra. His research into it is cut short when a tentacle reaches out and attacks him. Stuck in a town so small and remote that even Walmart won’t open a store there, the girls “borrow” a boat and cruise out to a remote cabin to hang out. But when a strange-looking polar bear attacks Aju things take a turn for the worse.
It might not be The Thing, but body-jumping aliens are back in the frozen north. And it’s up to a group of Indigenous girls, Maika (Tasiana Shirley...

Rlje Films and Shudder have acquired Nyla Innuksuk’s “Slash/Back,” an alien invasion thriller that premiered to raves at this year’s SXSW.
The two companies are business units of AMC Networks. The film is expected to be released in theaters and on VOD/Digital before streaming on Shudder later this year. Shudder is focused on horror, thriller and supernatural content, so the appeal is obvious.
“Slash/Back” is the feature directorial debut of Innuksuk, who also co-wrote the film with Ryan Cavan (“The Secret Goat”). It stars a young cast that includes Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth and Chelsea Prusky.
“The brilliant effects, strong female leads and fun, adventurous story make this a film we know audiences are going to love,” said Mark Ward, chief acquisitions officer at Rlje Films.
Critics embraced the film after it debuted at SXSW, with Variety‘s Peter Debruge writing, “Indigenous director Nyla Innuksuk...
