[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Conners Season 7, Episode 10, “Smash and Grab and Happy Death Day .”] The Conners hit 100 episodes with its latest installment, “Smash and Grab and Happy Death Day,” but was there anything truly standout about the milestone entry? Usually, 100th episodes lean into a big event, but The Conners relies on emotions and sentimentality for its milestone. The installment is broken up into two prominent storylines, one focusing on a smash-and-grab robbery at Dan’s (John Goodman) hardware store where Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) is on-site to help detain one of the would-be robbers. Disney / Chris Willard Meanwhile, Becky (Lecy Goranson) juggles the topic of death with her daughter Beverly Rose (Charlotte Sanchez) as her sister Darlene (Sara Gilbert) offers a blunter perspective. In both these storylines, sentimental aspects of these characters’ lives play a role. Jackie ultimately lets the low-rate criminal go after the police are slow to respond to the smash-and-grab...

For any television series reaching its 100th episode, looking back is a given, but there aren’t many shows with a 35-year history like ABC’s “The Conners,” the sitcom following the blue-collar family with an affinity for getting knocked down by life’s struggles while making us laugh along the way. “It’s just lucky, I guess,” says John Goodman, who plays patriarch Dan Conner. “Now all of a sudden, it’s 100 episodes. I can’t believe how fast the time went by, but I guess that’s just because I’m getting old.”

The Conners is set to return for its sixth season on Wednesday, February 7, on ABC, and the show’s executive producers have dropped some teases about what fans can expect. First and foremost, Lecy Goranson‘s Becky will continue her newfound romance with FedEx pilot Tyler, played by Sean Astin, who will reprise his Season 5 role. “[Astin’s] in two of the first five episodes, and we’ve got plans for more of him,” executive producer Bruce Helford told TVLine. “It’s really nice because it’s the first time since Mark from the Roseanne days that we’ve really found someone where the chemistry is right for Lecy Goranson and for the Becky character.” These episodes will see Becky introduce Tyler to Dan (John Goodman), Jackie (Laurie Metcalf), Darlene (Sara Gilbert), and, eventually, her daughter, Beverly Rose (Charlotte Sanchez). “The Conners” sisters have a week they’d rather forget on the episode that airs Wednesday night, with Darlene’s attempt to spice up her and Ben’s sex life not going so well — badly, in fact — and Becky’s parenting misdeeds are questioned after Louise accidentally sends a rude message in the family text thread. And there is no bigger button to push than suggesting Becky is an incompetent mother.
“Becky is always doubting herself whether she’s spending enough time with Beverly Rose, whether she’s being a good mom,” Lecy Goranson tells TheWrap. “It’s a great point of insecurity for her. And I think part of her knows that she isn’t completely present because she’s [going to school and working], but I think she, in her mind, she’s doing all these things for her daughter. It’s just in the meanwhile, she feels like it’s not enough.

Recovering addict Becky picked up a new (and worrisome) vice during Wednesday’s episode of The Conners.

One year ago Darlene got down on one knee and proposed to Ben. Then he crushed her heart to dust by turning her down.
Since then, the two have been enemies, then frenemies, and just when we thought they might be able to peacefully coexist...
They decided to get married.
Of course, this being The Conners Season 4 Episode 20, there was no way this wedding would go off without a hitch, and if Aldo and Harris had to be sacrificed to give us drama, I'm not only willing to see it happen, but relieved.
Harris marrying Aldo would have been a mistake. Aldo is 20 years older than Harris, he's her intellectual inferior, and he comes with enough baggage to fill a semi. Harris is just starting out in life.
Do I believe she cares for Aldo? Yes, but I also think moving in with Aldo was more about her daddy issues...

Darlene puts it all on the line when she demands a raise on The Conners Season 4 Episode 17.
Is it worth the risk, or is there no other choice?
If Darlene wants that new home, then it appears her options are limited. Yes, she can pick up the mortgage and get the loan to cover the construction costs of the remodel, but she forgot to factor in the price of taxes and insurance.
It's a rookie mistake, and it has come back to bite her.
Nothing is ever easy for the Conners. Even with Ben selling her all of the construction materials at cost, Dan getting a retired, senior citizen crew to actually do the work on the house, and charging Becky rent, Darlene still can't make the bills on her current salary.
And I'm a little confused. Last we'd heard, the plan was to knock this house down and rebuild...

Would you live in a former funeral home?
That was the question Darlene and Becky had to answer on The Conners Season 4 Episode 16, and their decision wasn't what I expected.
Patton Oswalt returned as Don Blansky, which was a treat, but I wish they'd utilize him more. This visit felt much too brief, but my hope is that this real estate venture will have him in The Conners' orbit more often.
The old Victorian home was pretty amazing. Even more surprising was that it was something that Darlene could actually afford.
Becky was worried about the ghosts and possible spirits still lurking in the former funeral home but that didn't seem to be Darlene's primary concern.
Darlene: I don't believe in spirits lingering in a house.
Dan: Do you believe in adult children lingering in a house? Because that's what I'm trying to fix.

The title of The Conners Season 4 Episode 14 was suitable in so many ways as the entire family found themselves "Triggered" by a shooting at the local mall.
Yet, much like real life, every person involved reacted and coped in vastly different ways, and a tragic event that could have had the power to pull the family apart brought them back together in the end.
In the past, I've complained that The Conners hasn't been funny enough of late, but given the material, this installment was aptly more somber.
It's difficult to joke about watching a young person being shot and killed, no matter what the circumstances, although Dan made a point about having to find a way to keep going because life goes on.
Louise: We just watched a kid get shot yesterday.
Dan: You know, I saw the same thing myself, but I’ve still got to go to work today,...

Spoiler Alert: The following story reveals details of Wednesday’s episode of ABC’s The Conners.
The family and their neighbors in Lanford were forced to deal with tragedy in Wednesday night’s episode of ABC’s The Conners in a storyline that echoes the experiences of too many communities across the U.S.
In the episode, titled “Triggered,” when a shooting goes down at the local mall, the neighborhood is put on lockdown. Becky (Lecy Goranson) quickly realizes Emilio (Rene Rosado) and their daughter Beverly Rose (Charlotte Sanchez) were shopping there and is unable to reach them.
Each member of the Conner family reacts differently to the shooting. Aunt Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) goes into law enforcement mode, pulling from her experience as a police officer to keep everyone informed of how the tragedy is being handled.
During the panic, young Mary (Jayden Rey) took charge. She helped the family...

America’s gun violence epidemic hit close to home during Wednesday’s Conners.
Penned by series star Lecy Goranson, the dramatic episode saw Louise’s homecoming cut short by word that someone had been shot at Lanford Woods Mall, where Emilio had just taken Beverly Rose. Locked inside, a helpless Becky stood in frozen panic while the rest of the family was glued to the news.

After the high expectations that everyone had for Mark at that magnet school, it was no surprise that his re-entry into public school wasn't easy on The Conners Season 4 Episode 12.
But when Darlene found $500 in cash in Mark's room, she ended up with a whole new set of worries.
I couldn't really blame Darlene for jumping to the conclusion that Mark was dealing drugs. There are only so many ways for a kid to come up with that kind of cash.
And I appreciated that Darlene checked in with all of the adults in Mark's life, including Ben, before confronting her son. No matter the status of Ben and Darlene's relationship, Mark and Ben are still close, and that's not a bad thing.
But when the truth came out, it made a lot more sense. Mark isn't perfect, but having him turn to selling drugs to other kids would have...

It was the Darlene and Ben show once again on The Conners Season 4 Episode 9, and I'm so tired of watching these two bicker that it made me want to change the channel.
I know there was a time when I liked Ben and Darlene as a couple. I rooted for them. I wanted them to get married and have a child together.
Now, I'm just grateful that none of that ever occurred.
Watching these two fight, snipe, and verbally tear one another down isn't funny. It's sad, bordering on pathetic, and I wish it would end.
Darlene: I can honestly say that I hope you find somebody.
Ben: Well, thanks.
Darlene: Anything you want to say to me?
Ben: Oh, sure. Yes. I can honestly say that I don’t wish you on anybody.
Permalink: Oh, sure. Yes. I can honestly say that I don’t wish you on anybody.

It was Halloween in Lanford, but The Conners Season 4 Episode 5 didn't quite live up to the high standards I've come to expect from a Connor fright night.
I know they don't have to give us the entire family in costume every year, but that doesn't mean I don't hope for just that.
This year we only got Jackie as Peter Pan and Becky as Tinkerbell. I can't even count Aldo's kids because it seems that Melvin and Marvin are just usually creepy.
On the upside, Darlene continued to search for her path to enlightenment or happiness or just something that didn't make her generally miserable.
It's easy to say that she's unhappy because Ben dumped her, but the truth is Darlene was depressed long before that. Ben and Darlene weren't working, but whether she ends up back with Ben or not, and I'm not rooting for a reconciliation, Darlene needs...

Dan and Louise got married on The Conners Season 4 Episode 4, or at least I hope they did. Was Jackie's last-minute, quickie ceremony legal?
I guess we'll have to choose to believe.
But with everything that went wrong, it felt odd that not one family member mentioned Roseanne.
Don't get me wrong. I love Dan and Louise. They make a great couple, and I'm thrilled that they've gotten married.
But as the tornado bore down on Lanford, I half expected someone to call it the curse of Roseanne, but no one did.
To have none of Roseanne's children nor her sister mention her as Dan prepared to get married felt unauthentic.
Not that I wanted them to mention it to Dan because that would have been insensitive, but you'd think Jackie, Becky, Darlene, or DJ would wonder aloud what their late mother would have thought about this day or how they...

ABC’s “The Conners” isn’t really a sitcom. It’s more a “human comedy.” Just as “Roseanne”, created by star Roseanne Barr and Matt Williams, was praised for offering a realistic look at middle-class life while delivering the laughs, so too has the spinoff which is set to return to for its fourth season this fall.
This year, the sprawling Conner family living in the fictional Lanford, Illinois was hit hard by Covid-19. There was unemployment. Dan (John Goodman) nearly lost the family home. His girlfriend Louise (Katey Sagal) got the virus. Becky (Lecy Goranson) went off the wagon and into rehab where she had an emotional confrontation with her father Dan. Darlene (executive producer Sara Gilbert) and her boyfriend Ben (Jay R. Ferguson) went through some rough patches. Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) struggled to keep the restaurant Lunch Box afloat but found love with Louise’s brother Neville (Nat Faxon), the town’s vet.

If you didn't cry during The Conners Season 3 Episode 18, then you have no heart.
Yes, it was another highly emotional installment involving Becky's alcoholism, but this time we got some answers about how Mark died and how others in the family felt about him.
Especially Dan.
But let's backtrack a bit.
Becky was going through the motions at rehab and using her well-honed coping mechanism of sarcastic humor to get her through, and it was bugging the heck out of her roommate, Rachel.
Rachel: If you’re not going to do the work, why are you even here?
Becky: Because they told me that they’d teach me how to stop drinking, but I’ve been here for two weeks, and all I’ve gotten is a bunch of psychobabble about why I drink. I know why I drink. My husband died. That’s one of the best reasons to drink ever.

Guilt was the overwhelming theme on The Conners Season 3 Episode 17, and for better or worse, it's foreshadowing significant changes ahead.
It's funny how some people can enter your life and shift your perception of the world in completely unexpected ways. Molly Tilden did that for Darlene when they briefly reconnected.
And it seems that Jeff, Wellman Plastics' new employee, is doing the same.
Once again, Darlene tried to convey to Ben how much she needed to get away. Even if it wasn't a trip to Hawaii, she just needed a mini-vacation to recharge, and she wanted to take that with him.
But Ben either wasn't really hearing her or he or didn't want to. He's fixated on him and Darlene moving in together as the end game. Ben is focused on his own needs, and that's not necessarily wrong.

It was a dinner party done Conners' style when Darlene invited her boss to visit her at home on The Conners Season 3 Episode 4.
There were fish sticks made from unspecified seafood, Mark doing a double-take at the stranger who appeared to be his mother's friend -- probably because Darlene doesn't have friends -- and Becky being openly hostile to their guest.
Clearly, Robin didn't bring nearly enough wine to make this meal go smoothly.
Despite all of the tension at the table, Robin never got flustered or lost her cool, but perhaps sending Becky that write-up via email at the dinner table didn't show the best of manners.
Making the effort to approach Robin at work and invite her over for dinner shows how much this supervisor's position means to Darlene.
Darlene: What do you think they pay supervisors?
Becky: They drive cars that are painted all one color, so more than us.

For a brief but wonderful moment, there was joy on The Conners Season 3 Episode 3, pure, unadulterated joy.
And then, as has happened so many times before, it was replaced with soul crushing disappointment.
If Mark's emotional support chickens are working for him, then he needs to get several more for the rest of his family. They're going to need them to get through this.
How often have we witnessed Darlene so happy that she could barely contain herself? Those moments feel almost nonexistent. I'm not sure I can even recall one.
Which is probably why Darlene being thrilled to tell Becky that she was pregnant was so touching
Becky: It means a lot that you told me first.
Darlene: Well yeah, I wanted to show you that you’re not the only one who can have a risky, old lady pregnancy, and I’m going to have to have...

"Who's the mom? You're the mom," he says while grinning from ear to ear.
The news is also welcomed by Becky because they can raise their babies together.
We can go to Mommy and Me [classes] and we don't have to talk to any of the other mothers at all," Darlene tells her sister.

I hate it when The Connors leaves us with a distressing season finale.
Perhaps hate is too strong a word. This series does such an amazing job of letting us laugh at the hard times, but sometimes it's difficult when circumstances really make you want to cry or throw yourself down the escalator at the mall.
The one constant that this family has always been able to hold onto is their home. It has been the one thing they could all come back to even during their most desperate times.
So my heart hurt for Dan Conner during The Conners Season 2 Episode 20. Dan has worked hard all his life to provide a home for his family, one that they return to over and over again.
This family has suffered through so many difficult times for so long that I wondered if Ben had a point in this The Conners quote:

Harris Conner may have been dealt a tough blow but she's still got a lot of which she should be proud.
The teen pulled together her spiraling life, got a job, and came up with a plan to work towards her college degree.
Then the rug got pulled out from under her and, like many of the Conners who came before her, she moved back home.
It's interesting how during all of Harris' issues with her mom that she never once mentioned moving in with her Dad.
You'd think that since David had been out of the country for so many years of Harris and Marc's lives that the kids would want to spend more time with him or that they'd even discuss moving in with him, especially since Darlene had to move back home into a small house with too many people.
It's been so long since we've heard...

The last three installments of The Conners were exceptional.
From the hysterical football theme to the so-honest-it-was-funny live episode about politics to Ben and Darlene's discussion about starting a family that almost ended them as a couple, this show has frequently made me think, feel, and laugh out loud.
I suppose that's what made The Conners Season 2 Episode 14 so disappointing.
There wasn't much to laugh about and even the touchy-feely moments didn't quite hit the mark I've come to expect.
Take Jackie and the offer of a thrupple.
Jackie does need to put herself out there. She deserves to have a social life, even a love life.
But a relationship with another married couple? I know this was supposed to be humorous, but all it managed to do was make me cringe.
They’ve been married 30 years. They’re regular one person at a time people.
Jackie Permalink: They’ve been married 30 years.

Darlene, Darlene, Darlene...
That's the mantra that kept running through my head while watching The Conners Season 2 Episode 2.
