A music genre born in the barrios of Puerto Rico permeated into the mainstream and up the charts. Its story is told through Reggaeton: The Sound that Conquered the World, a new docuseries from Peacock. Executive producer and director Omar Acosta teamed up with Daddy Yankee to spotlight the cultural touchstones, evolution, and impact of Reggaeton. Daddy Yankee’s song Gasolina became a global phenomenon 20 years ago, solidifying him as the “King of Reggaeton.” Others who helped put the Latin, hip-hop, and Caribbean-infused sound on the map are also interviewed for the docuseries. Names like Bad Bunny, Feid, Ivy Queen, J. Balvin, Karol G, Myke Towers, Nicky Jam, Rauw Alejandro, Shaggy, Vico C. and more. Here Acosta provides insight on the making of the project and why it hits close to home. Bad Bunny performs onstage during the 2023 Grammy Awards (Kevin Winter/Staff) Reggaeton is often lumped together with other genres of music.

Unsurprisingly in a year in which she has dominated all other comers in recorded music and the live sphere, Taylor Swift emerged as the leading nominee for MTV’s Video Music Awards, collecting 10 nominations in the competition for the 2024 spacemen.
Post Malone followed close behind with nine nods, primarily for sharing Swift’s “Fortnight” nominations, as her featured guest on that hit.
Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem and Ariana Grande tied for third place among VMAs finalists, with six nominations each. Sza and Megan Thee Stallion both picked up five nominations.
Moving ahead in the contest with four nods each are Olivia Rodrigo, Teddy Swims and, making big inroads as a solo artist, Blackpink’s Lisa. Tied with three nominations apiece are Benson Boone, Anitta, Dua Lipa, Tyla, Bleachers and GloRilla.

Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 10, Rolling Stone is breaking down 16 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.
The academy has a tough decision that ultimately comes down to Karol G’s history-making accomplishments or Tainy’s sprawling production genius. Both artists are familiar to Grammy voters: Karol cinched her first nomination in 2022, for her album KG0516, while Tainy won last year thanks to his credits on the Bad Bunny blockbuster Un Verano Sin Ti.

Puerto Rican rapper Myke Towers is undeniably a product of the underground, even on his most chart-friendly projects. Since arriving in 2016 with his debut, El Final del Principio, his star has risen on the strength of his uncanny flow and cadence, sharp lyrics, and prolific work ethic on a series of releases that have seen him honor the barrios that raised him while attracting listeners worldwide. After moving seamlessly from rap en español to Latin pop, he had his biggest success yet with the Latin Grammy-nominated 2021 album Lyke Mike, which...

The “Bad Bunny is dating Kendall Jenner” rumors are taking over Kardashian Twitter — and a new verse from Benito is only making fans think the relationship is even more real. On Friday, urbano star Eladio Carrión released his album 3MEN2 Kbrn, including “Coco Chanel,” featuring a verse from Bad Bunny that fans think references the model.
Tucked within lyrics about luxury vehicles and eating pasta in Italy, Bad Bunny sneaks in a mention of how “Scorpios are dangerous.” Jenner is a Scorpio. But if that line was too broad, a few bars later,...

Thalia sure knows how to cheer a girl up. On Thursday, the beloved pop singer joined Kenia Os for “Para No Verte Más,” a reimagining of the ska track by La Mosca Tse-Tse that captures both ladies moving on from a man that’s worth leaving behind.
“It brings me joy to be able to bring one of my favorite songs to life, and even more so to be able to revive this classic for new generations at the hand of an artist like Kenia,” Thalia said.

Daddy Yankee knows what it takes for a Latin song to break the charts. And when Myke Towers showed him his new song “Ulala,” which dropped on Thanksgiving, Yankee understood its “global hit” potential.
While working with the same producers on their albums, Towers — who was featured on Legendaddy‘s “Pasatiempo” — decided to show the reggaetón legend his tropical-tinged pop song to see what he would think.
“[My producers] Play-n-Skillz were working on Daddy Yankee’s album at the same time as they were working on mine, so in one of these back-and-forth phone tags,...

When Farruko took the Casa BACARDÍ stage at the ninth annual Life Is Beautiful, the crowd connected their thumbs and forefingers en masse. Pulsing their heart-shaped hands in time with the Puerto Rican artist’s beloved brand of reggaeton, they responded to Farruko’s every prompt, echoing every word on cue. When the music ended, the audience sang the rapper off stage in hopes their display of devotion might extend his set. Despite their efforts, it was the fans populating the YouTube comments’ section that would have the last word...

Myke Towers raps with a natural ease — effortless, fluid, like he was born to do it. Except, when he was growing up in Puerto Rico, being a performer barely crossed his mind. “Music always spoke to me, but I swear to you, I never, ever, ever thought that I was going to be an artist,” he says on a recent phone call from his home on the island. “I thought maybe I’d work in the music industry somehow, but never as a singer or rapper.”

Brazilian pop sensation Anitta gave her first TV performance of her newest single, “Boys Don’t Cry,” Monday on The Tonight Show.
The new track — a dance punk-tinged affair which marks a pivot from Anitta’s reggaetón sound — draws inspiration from Anitta’s teenage admiration for bands like Panic! At The Disco.
“People used to think, ‘Oh, she shakes her ass, so she’s dumb,'” she told Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon. “And I wanted to show a different side — like, ‘Yeah, I shake my ass, but I can be smart.

Viewed through one lens, last night’s Latin Grammy Awards were full of unexpected awards and upsets. The 79-year-old Brazilian trailblazer Caetano Veloso and 24-year-old son Tom Veloso won over emerging stars like Rauw Alejandro and Camilo for Record of the Year; Panamanian salsero Rubén Blades beat out Bad Bunny, Natalia Lafourcade, and C. Tangana for Album of the Year; and the anthem “Patria Y Vida,” which soundtracked Cuban protests this summer, was chosen as Song of the Year over some of the biggest pop hits in recent months.

Puerto Rican rapper and singer Myke Towers hit the stage at the Latin Grammys with his high-energy song “Pin Pin” from his latest album Lyke Mike. During the performance, he brought an entire troupe of salsa dancers and a big brass band to back him while he spit his verses to the hard-hitting, bass-heavy track. Later, Jay Wheeler hopped onstage and joined Towers for a pitch-perfect rendition of their collaboration “La Curiosidad.”

Selena Gomez fully leaned into Spanish-language pop on Revelación, the lithe, seven-song EP that saw her team up with reggaeton stars like Rauw Alejandro and Myke Towers. She follows a similar, air-light sound on “999,” a new collaboration with Colombian singer-songwriter Camilo.
Gomez’s breathy vocals fit seamlessly with Camilo’s unique tenor that it’s almost hard to tell them apart at certain points in the song. Camilo wrote “999” and produced it alongside Edgar Barrera and A.C. The video, directed by Sophie Muller, plays into the easygoing...
