Kkr Vice Captain Nitish Rana(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Nitish Rana, the attacking left-handed batter and part-time off-spinner, is a key player for the Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) in the Ipl 2024. But there’s more to him than just his impressive cricket skills!
Nitish Rana’s journey from Mumbai to Kkr stardom
Nitish Rana started making his mark in the Ipl with the Mumbai Indians. However, it was after being bought by Kkr in the 2018 auction that his career truly took off. Kkr recognized his batting prowess and retained him in the 2022 Mega Auction for a cool 8 crore. He’s even been able to play international cricket, representing India in a single Odi and a couple of T20Is against Sri Lanka in 2021.
Leadership runs in Rana’s blood (sort of!). When Shreyas Iyer was unavailable due to his injury in Ipl 2023, Rana stepped up and donned the captain’s hat for Kkr.

Kannan Iyer‘s sophomore, Ae Watan Mere Watan, currently streaming on Prime Video, narrates the tale of a courageous young girl in pre-independent India when the British government controlled all the newspapers and private radio stations. It was done with the sole intention of manipulating the perceptions of the Indians to suit their cruel and deceptive agenda. Most of the freedom fighters and political leaders were in jail. Those who were not arrested went underground. The situation was both intimidating and dangerous, and the government has partially curbed the freedom movement. In response to this despot approach, the protagonist and her friends embark on a bold endeavor. They aim to inspire and unite fellow Indians in their struggle against the empire and liberate the nation from the fetters of slavery. While the premise holds promise, the film serves as another example where a potential concept doesn’t always ensure an equally engaging output.

Sara Ali Khan-starrer Ae Watan Mere Watan is trending at number 1 on Amazon Prime(Photo Credit –YouTube)
Ae Watan Mere Watan, a fresh take on India’s fight for independence, has become a runaway hit on Amazon Prime Video India, soaring to the coveted number one spot. This historical thriller sheds light on a fascinating, yet often overlooked, aspect of the freedom struggle – the power of underground radio stations.
Sara Ali Khan takes centre stage, portraying a fictional character inspired by the courageous Usha Mehta. During the critical Quit India Movement of 1942, Mehta defied British rule by establishing a clandestine radio station. Through this potent platform, she broadcasted messages of hope and resistance, becoming a major threat to the British Raj.

Ae Watan Mere Watan
It is strange, but director Kannan Iyer has directed just one other film in his entire career. Ek Thi Dayan in 2013 featured Konkona Sen Sharma as a, ha ha, witch. Which, if you think about it, is just the antithesis of what Sara Ali Khan plays in Iyer’s second film.
Ae Watan Mere Watan warmly embraces all the shining trophy-like atrophied tropes of desh-bhakti films, and yet succeeds in being a trifle removed from its flag-waving origins.
Sara Ali Khan, so far known for making faces on camera, withdraws into a quietly assured space to play Usha Mehta, a fierce nationalist who combated colonialism in her own way by manning an underground radio station propagating the views and ideology of Mahatma Gandhi while he, the Mahatma, was jailed.
Uniquely, the character Usha Mehta’s fight for freedom is in-sync with the actress’ flight into freedom.

Devan’s directorial debut, Valatty, revolves around Tomy, a golden retriever with a golden heart and a lens through which he saw the word differently. His owner, Roy (Vijay Babu), loved him more than anything in the world and was looking for a suitable companion for his furry friend to breed with. Roy would die before he would make Tomy cross with dogs from lousy households. While Roy was searching the city to find a perfect partner for Tomy, he saw Amalu, a cocker spaniel that belonged to his neighbor, Saraswati (Mahima Nambiar). From the moment Tomy laid his eyes on Amalu, he lost his heart to her and began seeking excuses just to see her. Since Tomy was the coolest dog in society, he tried impressing Amalu with the tricks Roy taught him. Amalu also reciprocated his advances and fell for Tomy.

Pallekele, Sep 2 (Ians) Hardik Pandya made 87 while Ishan Kishan slammed 82 in a vital 138-run partnership for the fifth wicket in a remarkable recovery act to help India overcome a top-order collapse and make 266 in 48.5 overs against Pakistan in their first match of Asia Cup at Pallekele on Saturday.
But as soon as the mid-innings break began, persistent rain, which had caused interruptions twice during India’s innings, came back with greater force, forcing the ground to be fully covered.
With an inspection at 9 pm local time and cut-off time at 10:27 pm, the inevitable happened when handshakes happened all around, implying that the match was called off as rain had the final say.
As a result, Pakistan, the top-ranked Odi side, has qualified for the Super Four stage of the competition, making the India-Nepal match at the same venue on Monday a must-win for Rohit Sharma & Co to enter the next phase of the competition.

Pallekele, Sep 2 (Ians) All-rounder Hardik Pandya made 87 while Ishan Kishan slammed 82 as the duo helped India overcome a top-order collapse and make 266 in 48.5 overs against Pakistan in their first match of Asia Cup here on Saturday.
Under challenging conditions, India were reduced to 66/4, before Kishan and Pandya stepped up in a pressure situation to stitch an important 138-run partnership. While Kishan mixed sensibility with aggression, Pandya was calmness personified and upped the ante after the wicketkeeper-batter fell.
For Pakistan, pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf were amongst the wicket-takers, even though their spinners and fielders weren’t up to the mark. Just when it felt the game would drift away from Pakistan, the pacers triggered another collapse as India went from 239-5 to 266 all out.

Pallekele (Sri Lanka), Sept 1 (Ians) In the cool and serene surroundings of Sri Lanka, fans from around the world will witness another chapter being added to the India-Pakistan rivalry when the two neighbours clash in a Group A match of the Asia Cup at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
In India’s opening match of the Asia Cup, they will be without wicketkeeper-batter K.L. Rahul due to a niggle unrelated to his right thigh injury, which has kept him out of action after May 1 this year. Though they have a like-to-like reserve player in Sanju Samson, it seems that Ishan Kishan could bat in the middle-order to fill in for Rahul’s absence.
Though Kishan hit three consecutive fifties in ODIs against West Indies in July, the top three of Shubman Gill, captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been set for a long time. Especially with...

New Delhi, Aug 29 (Ians) Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra feels Virat Kohli should bat at No.3 in the Asia Cup and World Cup 2023.
In the last few years, the Indian Men’s Cricket Team has suffered a lot at the No.4 position, but with Shreyas Iyer and Kl Rahul back in the team, the shoes are filled now.
In his latest episode of Aakashvani on Jio Cinema, Chopra stated that Virat’s numbers at the No.3 position are brilliant. “There are two parameters to judge this. First, Virat Kohli’s success at No. 4 is good, but at No. 3 it’s exceptional. A significant sample size reinforces this and his peak equals India’s best.
“Hopes rest on his tournament performance – if he does well, India benefits; otherwise, a middle-order gap looms. Kohli’s effectiveness shines at No. 3, tackling new balls and closing games. Retaining this is vital,” he added.

New Delhi, Aug 23 (Ians) Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar spoke about the flexibility of the Indian line-up, saying that the whole debate will be around how India’s No. 4, 5 and 6 in batting lineup would look ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup.
Right-handed middle-order batters K L Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been selected in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, happening from August 30 to September 17, after recovering in time from a right thigh and back injury respectively.
The availability of Iyer and Rahul, who also has a niggle to deal with which is unrelated to his original injury, had been India’s huge concerns. Mumbai, Aug 21 (Ians) The return of Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna has bolstered the Indian fast bowling attack and gives it a healthy look but the problems in the spin department are worrisome, according to former India pacer Karsan Ghavri. Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna have made a successful return from long injury layoffs in the ongoing T20I series against Ireland, which has also earned them a call-up for the Asia Cup to be held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

New Delhi, Aug 21 (Ians) To bring in more flexibility in the squad ahead of the Men’s Odi World Cup, India skipper Rohit Sharma said he wants to ensure players in the side are fine with batting anywhere if the need arises, especially in the middle-order, though they have been given specific roles in the line-up.

New Delhi, Aug 21 (Ians) Right-handed batter K.L. Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been selected in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, happening from August 30 to September 17, after recovering in time from a right thigh and back injury respectively.
In a press conference held in New Delhi on Monday, India’s chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar announced the 17-member Asia Cup squad, handing young middle-order left-handed batter Tilak Varma a maiden Odi call-up. Varma has so far been capped in T20Is but is yet to make his Odi debut.
Rahul has been out of action since injuring his right thigh during his team Lucknow Super Giants’ match in Ipl 2023 against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 1, when he was chasing the ball to stop a boundary in the second over.
It was later revealed on May 5 that Rahul has suffered a significant tear to a tendon in the right thigh and underwent surgery.

Mumbai, Aug 10 (Ians) Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has expressed concerns over unresolved issues with the No.4 spot in ODIs, stating that “after Yuvraj Singh, nobody has come and settled in”.
With less than two months to go before the Cricket World Cup, the no.4 position is a hot topic for debate and the reason is the growing list of injuries.
Due to the players getting injured, the Men In Blue have struggled to find the right fit throughout the year and are now left with no choice but to try different players.India have played 11 players at the No.4 position in ODIs since the end of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, with only Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant batting over 10 times.
However, Pant won’t be able to make it to the World Cup team this year considering his injuries after his car crash, while Iyer is yet to return after a back injury.

New Delhi, Aug 6 (Ians) With the 2023 Men’s Odi World Cup now only two months away, it is time for the teams to fine tune their combinations and see who are their best eleven players and four back-ups ready to participate in the competition from October 5 to November 19.
For India, it is the same route too – fine tune combinations and see every game as a chance to find their strongest playing eleven for the mega event at home. Their recent 2-1 series win over the West Indies was important in seeing what the contenders for numbers four and five had to show.
But the first two games of the series in Barbados showed that there was confusion in India’s way of experimenting with the batting order. Apart from Ishan Kishan smashing a hat-trick of fifties as an opener, which could point towards him being a back-up opening option.

New Delhi, Aug 3 (Ians) Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that one major difference in the build-up of the 2023 Men’s Odi World Cup as compared to the preparation undertaken by the 2011 tournament-winning team, has been the significantly lesser time of playing matches as a cohesive unit.
After the end of 2007 Odi World Cup and before the start of the 2011 edition, India had played 118 ODIs. With the 2023 World Cup being just over two months away, India have played just 57 matches after the end of the 2019 edition in England. Moreover, India has played 42 ODIs since the start of 2021, with 44 players being tried out, highlighting that a settled combination hasn’t been achieved yet.

London, June 10 (Ians) Australia great Ricky Ponting feels that Ajinkya Rahane, who made a remarkable return to red ball cricket with his gutsy knock during the ongoing Icc World Test Championship final, can grasp the opportunity to prolong his Test career for a couple more years.
Rahane ended a 17-month exile when he was recalled to India’s XI for the one-off Test at The Oval on the back of an impressive domestic season and an excellent Indian Premier League campaign with the Chennai Super Kings that netted 326 runs. He was perhaps also fortuitous that injuries to fellow batters Kl Rahul and Shreyas Iyer during the lead-up ensured he was an automatic choice.
The stylish No.5 took his chance with both hands to top-score with 89 during India’s first innings in London and Ponting thinks the 35-year-old showed enough to ensure he wins selection for upcoming series in the Caribbean...

New Delhi, May 24 (Ians) Skipper Rohit Sharma has praised the character shown by individuals in India’s journey to the Icc World Test Championship 2023 final but feels that the job is not done yet and they have to get the best result in the summit clash against Australia.
India will take Australia on at The Oval in the final of the 2021-2023 cycle of the World Test Championship at The Oval, London from June 7 to 11.
“After the World Test Championship [2021 Final] in Southampton, we quickly had to regroup and get ready for the next cycle. I thought in that cycle we played some really, really tough cricket. Visakhapatnam, March 19 (Ians) India captain Rohit Sharma admitted that his players did not apply themselves well during the first innings of the second Odi against Australia, where they were bowled out for a paltry 117 in just 26 overs. He added that the nature of the pitch wasn’t the one where teams would get out for that score.
Left-arm fast-bowler Mitchell Starc emerged as the main architect in Australia bundling out India for their fourth-lowest total at home, claiming his ninth five-wicket haul in Odi cricket. Then, openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh slammed rollicking fifties to chase down the total in 11 overs, giving India their heaviest defeat in terms of balls left (234 balls).

Mumbai, March 16 (Ians) Hardik Pandya, India’s stand-in captain for the first Odi against Australia to be held on Friday, backed the bowlers in the series to do very well in the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.

Mumbai, March 15 (Ians) T. Dilip, India’s fielding coach, on Wednesday confirmed that middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer is ruled out of the upcoming three-match Odi series against Australia, starting here on Friday.
“Injuries are a part and parcel of the game. We have the best medical facilities and they are well-equipped… We are in coordination (with Nca). Regarding Shreyas, he’s ruled out of this series. (We will provide) further updates as and when we know it,” said Dilip in the pre-series press conference.
Iyer had suffered the recurrence of a lower-back injury during the fourth Test against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium and did not bat in India’s first innings score of 571.
During day four’s play on Sunday, the Bcci said Iyer had gone for scans after the right-handed batter complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play and the medical team was monitoring him.

New Delhi, March 14 (Ians) India batter Shreyas Iyer is in doubt for the upcoming three-match Odi series against Australia starting March 17 due to the recurrence of his back injury.
After having spent nearly two full days on the field, Iyer complained of swelling in his lower back during the Ahmedabad Test and didn’t come to bat in the fourth and final Test against Australia. He is currently under the supervision of Bcci’s medical team at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he will be assessed, an ESPNcricinfo report said.
The report further said that the right-handed batter flew out of Ahmedabad even before the Test ended to seek a prognosis of his condition and is certain to miss at least the first Odi.
Notably, India skipper Rohit Sharma after the end of the Ahmedabad Test had said that Iyer ‘does not seem to be doing that well’.
“Poor guy.

Ahead of the start of day five’s play on Monday, the Bcci said in a statement, “Shreyas Iyer will take no further part in this Test. A specialist opinion will be sought.”
Earlier, during day four’s play on Sunday, Iyer did not come out to bat, with the Bcci saying that he had gone for scans after the right-handed batter complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play and the medical team monitoring him.
With Iyer being unavailable to bat, India finished on 571 in 178.5 overs with a lead of 91 runs over Australia. Talismanic batter Virat Kohli scored a magnificent 186, while Shubman Gill played a sparkling knock of...

Ahmedabad, March 12 (Ians) Talismanic batter Virat Kohli showed impeccable grit, discipline and concentration to make a magnificent 186 as India took a 91-run lead over Australia after being bowled out for 571 in their first innings during the fourth Test at Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
At stumps, Australia reached 3/0 in six overs of their second innings and trail India by 88 runs with just one day left in the match. Travis Head making all the runs, as he and makeshift opener Matthew Kuhnemann, negotiated the tricky six overs from Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami.
If Shubman Gill was the talk of the town with his sparkling 128 on Saturday, it was Kohli’s turn to be in the spotlight on Sunday to break his drought of Test century which lasted 1025 days through his determined 364-ball stay at the crease, hitting 15 boundaries and enthralling a sizeable Sunday crowd.

3rd Test, Day 2: Nathan Lyon takes eight-fer as India bowled out for 163, set Australia target of 76
Indore, March 2 (Ians) Premier off-spinner Nathan Lyon took his second eight-wicket haul in Test cricket to bowl out India for 169 in their second innings at the close of day two’s play in third Test at the Holkar Stadium on Thursday.
For India, top-order batter Cheteshwar Pujara stood tall with a valiant 59 off 142 balls, through his precise footwork on a difficult pitch to bat. But rest of the batters, barring Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin to some extent, couldn’t step up, giving a target of 76 for Australia to make the series scoreline 2-1, as Lyon finished with 8/64.
The final session began with Pujara and Iyer taking a four and six off an erring Matthew Kuhnemann. Iyer, who lowered his stance, got back-to-back fours off Nathan Lyon through lucky outside edges.
Iyer’s aggression paid off when he pulled off Kuhnemann for four and six respectively. But his knock ended...

New Delhi, Feb 19 (Ians) The national selectors on Sunday retained under-fire opener K.L Rahul for the third and fourth Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series while also retaining middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who was included for the Delhi Test after recovering from an injury, and Jaydev Unadkat, who was released ahead of the second Test to play for Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy final,
The decision to retain Rahul was not surprising after skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid expressed their support for the opener.
Since January 2022, Rahul has just one fifty-plus score while his last Test hundred came in December 2021 against South Africa. In the Delhi Test against Australia, Rahul was dismissed for 17 in the first innings and made just one in the chase of 115, coming after making a laborious 20 in Nagpur.

Ashwin set up the collapse to pick 3/59, before Jadeja ran through the Australian batting line-up as Australia crashed to 113 all out, after starting the day from 61/1 and being 86/2 at one stage, in their second innings. The Australian batting implosion gave India a target of 115, which they completed in 28.4 overs.
Rohit Sharma began the chase by driving wide of mid-on for a boundary off Matthew Kuhnemann in the opening over. But in the next over, he lost his opening partner Kl Rahul in an unlucky fashion. Rahul flicked well to the right of short leg off Nathan Lyon, but the ball lobbed up in the air after hitting the top of forward short leg’s pad and the keeper took an easy catch.
Rohit showed exquisite timing in whipping an overpitched delivery off Kuhnemann between deep mid-wicket and long-on. Post lunch, India began with an attacking intent, as Cheteshwar Pujara danced...

The win also means India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy too, with two matches still left.
Post lunch, resuming from 14/1, India began with an attacking intent. Cheteshwar Pujara danced down the pitch to whip Matthew Kuhnemann through mid-wicket for four. New Delhi, Jan 31 (Ians) After testing his match-fitness with a successful return to action in the Ranji Trophy, star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is set to join the India squad in Nagpur this week, ahead of the first Test against Australia, which begins on February 9.
Jadeja played for Saurashtra in their final group-stage match against Tamil Nadu last week in Chennai and bowled 41.1 overs and bagged a seven-for in the second innings. Since undergoing surgery in his right knee in September, it was his first match.
The 34-year old all-rounder, who was selected in India’s Test squad subject to clearing fitness tests, said after that performance that he was hopeful and “good to go” for the Australia series.
To monitor Jadeja’s fitness closely, one of the Bcci’s physios travelled with him. The cricketer is now back at the Nca to complete his final round of fitness tests, an ESPNcricinfo report said.

Mumbai, Jan 17 (Ians) Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match Odi series against New Zealand due to a back injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) announced on Tuesday.
“He will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (Nca) for further assessment and management,” it said in a statement.
Rajat Patidar, who is yet to make his debut, has been named as Iyer’s replacement in the Odi squad for the series.
Iyer played in all the matches in the recently-concluded series against Sri Lanka, scoring 28, 28 and 38 batting at No. 4. He is India’s second-highest run-scorer in ODIs since 2022, after Shubman Gill, scoring 818 at an average of 51.12.
The 28-year-old also played a starring role in India’s Test series win over Bangladesh in December last year, scoring 87 and 29* at Mirpur to help India win the deciding game.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 15 (Ians) India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer believes one has to look at scoring runs on every ball while going out to bat in the ODIs.
Iyer has been a key figure in India’s middle-order for ODIs in 2022, making 724 runs at an average of 55.69 in 15 innings.
In ODIs against Sri Lanka, Iyer has two scores of 28. But his ability to rotate the strike and bat well against spin in the middle overs is something which will come handy on Indian pitches when the 2023 Odi World Cup will be held in the country in October and November.
“I do look at scoring runs on every ball when I go out to bat. I see to it that momentum is on my side. My approach is to chase balls. In ODIs if you get to a start, you have to see to it that you maintain the rhythm and not complicate things,...
