Legendary Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and playwright David Mamet said that his children aren’t nepo babies and that they have achieved their success due to their talent. His daughter Zosia Mamet is best known for starring on “Girls” alongside news anchor Brian Williams’ daughter Allison Williams, Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke’s daughter Jemima Kirke and creator Lena Dunham, daughter of a pair of New York City artists.
Promoting his memoir “Everywhere an Oink Oink” over the weekend at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, David conceded that his daughters — including Zosia’s sister Clara Mamet — learned from spending time on set with their father, according to the L.A. Times. He noted that he felt gratified by that.
Speaking particularly of the successful Zosia, Mamet argued that his daughters haven’t benefited from any form of privilege. “They earned it by merit,” he said.

Power-pop fans were dealt a devastating blow Monday night when word came down that Raspberries frontman Eric Carmen died over the weekend at age 74. “Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep,” his wife, Amy Carmen, wrote to fans. “It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy.”
The tributes that followed focused on his signature solo hits “All by Myself,” “Hungry Eyes,” and “Make Me Lose Control,” but his greatest contributions came during his recording career in the Raspberries,...

Lola Kirke dropped by CBS Saturday Morning’s Saturday Sessions to perform three tracks from the actress/singer’s upcoming EP Country Curious.
For the mini-set, Kirke — who has previously appeared in films like Gone Girl, Lost Girls, and Mistress America — delivered her 2023 singles “All My Exes Live in L.A.” — a play on the George Strait classic “All My Ex’s Live in Texas” — and “He Says Y’all” along with “My House,” presumably from the to-be-released EP produced by Elle King.

When she was an infant, Lola Kirke had a nurse who would sing Patsy Cline’s “Crazy” to her as a soothing gesture. She would later encounter the song in a new way in Jumpin’ Jim’s Ukulele Country music book, which she received as a teenager learning to play the ukulele.
“It was my first instrument, because I’m a white girl who grew up in the mid-2000s — we all got ukuleles,” Kirke jokes during a Zoom call with Rolling Stone. The singer-actress, who’s starred in Mozart...

It’s been three decades since Ringo Starr founded his All Starr supergroup and took the stage with some of rock and roll’s biggest luminaries, creating an exceptional legacy of performances of some of the greatest hits of all time culled from Starr’s extraordinary catalog as a solo artist and as Beatle, as well as the All Starr Band members’ substantive songbook.
In celebration of this milestone, and just in time for the holiday season, a new limited-edition retrospective hardcover book titled “Ringo Rocks: 30 Years Of The All Starrs,” will be sold online exclusively beginning Wednesday, December 16 at juliensauctions.com.
This not to be missed commemorative photo memoir features some never-before-seen photos of the All Starr Band’s 30 record-setting years in the spotlight and life on the road, compiled by Henry Diltz and Jill Jarrett (who have followed Ringo Starr’s All Starr career since 1989), as well as...

Ringo Starr is turning 80 on July 7th and he plans on celebrating with a virtual charity concert featuring Paul McCartney, Sheryl Crow, Gary Clark Jr., Sheila E, and Ben Harper. “I love birthdays,” Starr recently told Rolling Stone. “This year is going to be a little different. There’s no big get-together; there’s no brunch for 100. But we’re putting this show together — an hour of music and chat. It’s quite a big birthday.”

Brian Howe, who was Bad Company’s lead singer for eight years and sang on a mid-’80s Ted Nugent’s album, died Wednesday of a heart attack while en route to a hospital near his home in Lake Placid, Fl. He was 66.
England native Howe took over for original Bad Company vocalist Paul Rodgers in 1986 and remained with the band for eight years. Recruited by Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke on a recommendation by Foreigner’s Mick Jones, Howe sang on and toured behind four of the band’s studio albums — three of which went gold — and its 1993 live disc. During his tenure, the group racked up eight top 10 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, including the No. 1 hits “Holy Water” (1990) and “How About That” (1992) — the latter topping that chart for six weeks.
Before joining the British hard rock band, Howe sang lead on Nugent’s 1984 album Penetrator.

When you ask what are some of the most notable names in comics today there is a very strong chance that both Brian K. Vaughn (Y: The Last Man, Saga, Runaways) and Marcos Martin (Batgirl: Year One, Doctor Strange: The Oath, Breach) will both come up. It is that fact that makes what they are doing with The Private Eye so intriguing. Not only is it an independent book released solely online, but also it has been released through a DRM-Free pay what you want format. All that is well and good but at the end of the day what really matters is the quality of the book, and of course Vaughn and Martin do not disappoint.

Guys, we need to talk about Girls.
Ever since the HBO comedy premiered April 15, 2012, there’s been controversy following in its footsteps — and I’m a little sick of it.
Yes, the series is loved by most critics. The first season won rave reviews and nabbed Girls two Golden Globes, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, just a week ago.
But thanks to the Internet, viewers and some critics have nitpicked — at times reasonably, but mostly not — at several issues surrounding Girls.
The most minor quibble I’ve heard is that the New York-based characters, led by Hannah Horvath (creator, writer, director and producer Lena Dunham), are unlikable. As Pajiba’s Dustin Rowles notes, “If you dip into the comments section of Girls reviews on any given site, one refrain echoes throughout: The characters are entitled and unlikable. Why should I watch a...

The capital has been the home of some of the biggest names and films in the industry over the past ten days, and with the festival finally coming to a close tomorrow, the results are in for the official competition categories.
Sir David Hare, Tom Hiddleston, David Yates, Sebastian Faulks, Olivia Colman, Kazuo Ishiguru, and many more prominent names presided over the various Juries, and with so much talent this year, I don’t envy what must have been very difficult decisions.
Also being honoured this year are Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter, both of whom have been presented with the BFI Fellowship, the highest honour from the film institute. The former brought his latest feature, Frankenweenie, to the festival for its opening night, whilst the latter stars in Mike Newell’s Great Expectations, bookending the festival nicely as the Closing Night Film.

I've been wanting to watch Girls since before its premiere, somewhat because of the hype and somewhat because the show seems like it would hit close to my upper-middle class NYC home—not a requirement for me to like a narrative-based product, but an encouragement. Alas, I have neither HBO nor a TV to play it on, and I can't watch Ology's screener, because my laptop doesn't like CDs, something I thought at first was a DVD permissions problem but turns out to be hardware-related.
Do you care about any of this? I sure hope not. But for some reason Josh Wilk thinks we should really care about his personal relationship to Girls. Josh has two daughters, 7 and 4, which gives him something in common with about 2 billion people on earth, but he also has a Girls screener, which those other 2 billion daughter-havers do not, and what he projects into the...

Jemima Kirke, one of the stars of HBO’s hit series “Girls,” is pregnant with her second child. The 27-year-old actress and painter confirmed the news to a New York Daily News reporter on Wednesday night at an after-party for the New York premiere of Woody Allen’s “To Rome, With Love.”
A reporter approached Kirke -- and her visibly pregnant belly -- at the party and congratulated her on her pregnancy. According to the Daily News, she responded: "Thank you," … before saying she was contemplating "stealing that woman's pasta" as the food glided by.

"Girls" star Jemima Kirke, who plays free-spirited Jessa on the controversial HBO comedy, confirmed she is pregnant with her second child.
The British-born actress and her husband, attorney Michael Mosberg, have a 20-month-old daughter, Rafaella, who was born just before the "Girls" pilot was shot. Filming is currently under way for the sophomore season.
Maybe the level-headed Kirke isn't that different from her bohemian character after all: Jessa shocked her friends -- played by creator Lena Dunham, Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet -- with a surprise wedding in Sunday's season finale.
Like her costars (the daughters of Brian Williams and David Mamet), Kirke has a famous father: Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke.

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

Jemima Kirke plays the free-spirited Jessa on the HBO comedy "Girls," but she says she's nothing like her character.
"This is an impression for me, in many ways," she told HuffPost TV. "I know acting is not impersonating, but I'm good with impressions. I can do impressions of people I know, and people I've been, and roles that I've acted before."
To that end, Kirke hasn't played many roles before. Besides lending her voice to the 2005 short film "Smile for the Camera," Kirke's only other onscreen appearance was in "Tiny Furniture," Lena Dunham's 2010 breakout indie movie. Dunham and Kirke have been friends since high school, and Kirke even inked one of Dunham's many tattoos.
Kirke -- daughter of Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke -- sat down with HuffPost to discuss the polarizing new series, why collaborating is important to her, and just how surprised she was at some of Jessa's more shocking moments.

Get ready for television's radically new view of the secret lives of "Girls."
It comes from Lena Dunham, a young writer-director-actress whose unique creative voice has made marks at the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Music and Media Festival in Austin, Texas. After big receptions there for her films "Creative Nonfiction" and "Tiny Furniture," she returned last month to unveil her newest project: the often stunningly frank HBO series "Girls," which premieres Sunday, April 15.
With filmmaker Judd Apatow ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin") as an executive producer, the serio-comic show revolves around several 20-something New Yorkers struggling to balance their careers and love lives ... and, frequently, their friendships with one another. If that sounds like a younger "Sex and the City," Dunham purposely sets her edgier "Girls" apart by referencing the earlier series in the first episode.
"I'd heard that writers and independent filmmakers could make a living writing or directing for TV,...

Lena Dunham is understandably emotional about her return to SXSW.
The young actress-writer-director earned big acclaim -- plus the award for Best Narrative Feature -- when she debuted her 2010 coming-of-age film "Tiny Furniture" at the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference in Austin, Texas. She's back there this week to unveil the first three episodes of her similarly themed, seriocomic HBO series "Girls," which premieres Sunday, April 15.
"It's so exciting," Dunham tells Zap2it. "I got here last night (Sunday, March 11), and I was totally overwhelmed, in a good way. I cried for 15 minutes, which was partially exhaustion from staying up too late writing the night before, but also the genuine feeling that this place is hugely meaningful for me.
"To come back here with this new project is massive," adds Dunham, "There's also the bittersweet feeling that the last few times I've been here, it's been seven girls staying in a room together,...

When Kinect launched in November of 2010, it would be fair to say that the line up consisted of very few meaningful titles. Kinect Adventures, Kinect Joyride, Kinect Sports, Sonic Free Riders – these were all Kinect tech demos masquerading as mini game collections. Indeed, the ball smashing game from Kinect Adventures was used to demonstrate Kinect over and over in the weeks preceding its launch.
One of the more notable launch titles was Kinectimals. Admitedly, it too was made up of a number of mini games, but the thread binding them together was stronger than pretty much every other launch title. What’s more, the game’s presentation and charm was such that it was one of the few Kinect launch titles that actually made you optimistic for the platform’s future.
Flash forward to the end of 2011, just over a year after Kinect’s arrival, and the line up hasn’t improved much.

Sega is staging a very unorthodox winter event to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th birthday and the upcoming release of Sonic Generations. Instead of your typical launch party, Sega will be partnering with Asa Entertainment to create the first Sonic Generations of Skate competition. Sonic may not be an skater by nature, but he has shown his deft in ice skating in several Winter Olympic video games that pit Sonic characters versus Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. This competition focuses on skateboarding, a talent Sonic showed off last year during the launch of Microsoft’s Kinect in Sonic Free Riders. On Saturday, October 22, Sonic and skateboarding fans will descend on Venice Beach, California (on the basketball courts near Muscle Beach), the iconic location where performance skateboarding planted it roots. Twelve of skateboarding’s most elite athletes, including Andy Macdonald, Lincoln Ueda, Pierre Luc Gagnon, Steve Caballero and Tony Hawk will compete for a cash.

In Part One of our interview, the beloved Bradford Anderson spoke about his exciting new role as "Achilles" on the indie soap The Further Adventures Of Cupid And Eros, as well as "Spinelli's" new book coming out this April. In Part Two he discusses the Spinelli/Maxie phenomenon, handling his sudden rise to fame, as well as the messages he delivered at his high school when he returned. How does he keep his "small town" identity in check in a big city? Find out below!
We Love Soaps TV: Damian Spinelli was originally written to be on for a short term. We have talked in previous interviews about his appeal to viewers as an outsider. But what do you think made his pairing with Maxie so popular?
Bradford Anderson: I think it was just about opposites-attract. One of the things that makes Spinelli useful in Port Charles is how he affects other people.

Every year, video game developers and the gamers who love their creations flock to Los Angeles for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, otherwise known as E3, a showcase of the hottest new titles and trends for the upcoming year. The industry's biggest studios, designers and publishers all compete for the precious hands-on time that generates the hype so crucial to making their games a success.
Throughout the three-day extravaganza, the expo floor's an intense cacophony of music, game sounds and occasionally frantic yelling. And on top of all of that, the platform holders -- the companies who makes the PC and console hardware those games run on -- offer arguments as to why a PC, Wii, Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 is superior to its competitors.
Ever since video gaming became a pop culture phenomenon in the 1980s, gamers have been pushing buttons and moving controllers to battle giant monsters or explore alien landscapes.

Rumor has it that there will be a Sonic title developed for compatibility with Project Natal.
Sonic Free Riders will be a racing game (to be released through Xbox Live Arcade) and supposed to feature full motion compatibility, a la Natal, where gamers can control the in-game characters with the recognition of body movement.
Similar to Mario Kart, players can acquire weapons and attack other racers, but all with motion control – i.e. simply motion towards your opponents to attack them, and reach in the direction of the weapons to equip.
Sounds like it could be fun, if all the details are true. It’s good to see that some of the Natal titles might be available via Xbla.
We can expect to get the official details during Microsoft’s E3 Project Natal event on Sunday, June 13th. A half dozen of our writers will be at E3, so you...

If you never managed to catch Andy Barker, P.I. when it originally aired two years ago, try not to beat yourself up. Though the show had an impressive cast, led by Andy Richter as a Cpa-turned-private-investigator, and including Harve Presnell, Tony Hale, Marshall Manesh, and Clea Lewis. It was also created by Conan O'Brien and Jonathan Groff. But it only lasted six episodes, and didn't seem to get much push from NBC. Watching it on the newly released DVD, Andy Barker, P.I.: The Complete Series, it's hard not to feel the show could have had legs if given the chance.
All's well that ends well, though, and Richter is happier than ever, paired again with Conan O'Brien on The Tonight Show, getting to do what he calls a "silly little comedy show" without dealing with the backwards world of the sitcom. I spoke with Richter earlier this week...

There used to be a lot of TV shows on overnight that were worth watching. I don't mean repeats of sitcoms or dramas that usually air earlier, but original programming geared towards the night owl. There aren't many shows like that anymore, but there's one on Fox News (yes, Fox News) at 3 Am and it's well worth catching (if you're worried about staying up that late, well, that's why God put DVRs on this Earth).
If I had to describe Red Eye it would be like this: it's a mix of Politically Incorrect and The McLaughlin Group, only for people who are up late at night drinking or eating too much junk food, with a host who comes at things from a conservative viewpoint but it's not really a political show. They go more for the jokes than they stress any ideology, and it's actually really funny. Like The Daily Show or The Colbert Report,...

For some reason I thought that Henry Gibson was a lot older than 73, but the character actor with the huge resume passed away from cancer at that age yesterday in Malibu.
One of the more famous TV credits on that resume was Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, the influential 60s comedy show that no one under 30 has ever seen. He also appeared in shows like Bewitched, The Beverly Hillbillies, Deep Space Nine, Coach, MacGyver, Evening Shade, Sisters, Newhart, Magnum, P.I., and Simon and Simon.
More recently, TV fans know him from his many appearances as a judge on Boston Legal and his voice work on King of the Hill (he played Bob Jenkins). He was also in several movies, including Magnolia (he played Thurston Howell???), The Nutty Professor, Nashville, The Blues Brothers, Wedding Crashers, and a ton of others.Continue reading Laugh-In's Henry Gibson dead at 73
