Lil Nas X is treating his latest single “J Christ” as a new beginning, a clean slate as he launches into his first album since his debut record Montero nearly three years ago. “The old has passed away; behold, the new has come,” reads a Bible verse that appears at the end of the newly-released video. After he’s survived a treacherous storm, he begins steering his ark towards calmer waters. The rapper even dedicated the record to “the man who had the greatest comeback of all time.” But comebacks...

There’s no doubting that the budgets and ambitions of music videos have dwindled since the glory days of MTV. We live in the age of TikTok-targeted ephemera. Yet miraculously, 2023 gave a much-needed shot of cinematic life to the form.
The best videos of the year emphasized meticulous technique over virality, offering intimate, impressionistic portraits of their respective artists’ interior lives and thoughts. Lana Del Rey and Lucy Dacus subverted Old Hollywood tropes, with a meta riff on studio system-era glamor and a lesbian tweaking of Wizard of Oz, respectively.
Others went bigger. Troye Sivan brought back the sheen and unabashed sexuality of Y2K pop princesses with a drag transformation that represents the performance of his career to date. Doja Cat took a maximalist approach to portraying the simultaneous highs and horrors of stardom, while Olivia Rodrigo constructed an elaborate, blood-splattered supernatural story to rival The Lost Boys.

Britney Spears made her long-awaited musical comeback in the summer of 2022 with a collaboration with none other than Elton John. The two artists joined forces for a new version of "Tiny Dancer," and the infectious single, called "Hold Me Closer," was released on Aug. 26.
The project was incredibly meaningful for both Spears and her fans, as the singer hadn't released new music since 2016's "Glory." She'd also been released her 13-year conservatorship a year prior and was finally free to create the music she wanted.
In her memoir "The Woman in Me," which was released on Oct. 24, Spears recounts how happy she was to have the ability to collaborate with John. "I was honored. Like me, Elton John has been through so much, so publicly," she wrote. "It's given him incredible compassion. What a beautiful man on all levels. Harry Styles marks the near-end of his extensive, multi-year touring in support of 2022’s Harry’s House with a brand new video. “Daylight” is the fifth and, very likely final, music video from the pop megastar’s third album.
In the credits for the video, it is noted that “Daylight” was “made with love by a creative team from Ukraine.” The Tanu Muino-helmed visual sees Styles joining a circus and exploring all it has to offer, from standing in front of a knife-thrower’s target or getting blown out...

Harry Styles has shared the official music video for his song “Daylight,” off his 2022 album Harry’s House. Watch the video below.
Styles made no official announcement about the video leading up to its premiere, but fans who found the preview page before it went live were greeted with a message saying, “It’s just a video, just for you.” In the credits for the video, it’s explained that it was “made with love by a creative team from Ukraine.”
Last year, Styles shared an unofficial music video for “Daylight” that was made with James Corden for the latter’s show. The two hit the streets of Brooklyn and managed to complete the shoot in under three hours for less than $300. The official version, of course, seems to have taken a bit more time, with a bit larger of a budget, but now fans can step into the world...

After seemingly denouncing the pop-leaning Planet Her and Hot Pink, Doja Cat has joked about dropping a rock/spoken-word album and, alternately, vowed to lean more heavily into hip-hop and rap. She delivers on the latter promise with “Attention,” the first single from her forthcoming, as-yet-untitled fourth studio album.
Doja recently told Rolling Stone that the new album is influenced by ’90s hip-hop in particular. And, indeed, the hypnotic “Attention” opens with the sounds of a gentle harp and the distant, ominous howls of a wolf before a crisp breakbeat straight out of 1995 kicks in, as the rapper-singer waxes sensual about how “it” is “hungry” and seeks “affection.”
Throughout, Doja claps back at her critics over her appearance and social media presence. She drops an in-character reference to the comparisons she’s received to Nicki Minaj, but her flow here nods more to Lauryn Hill.

Doja Cat has dropped the new single “Attention,” a hopeful little taste of what her as-yet-unannounced fourth album might sound like.
Built around a funky, mid-tempo beat with swirling harps galore, the track shows off Doja’s newer, rawer direction. In May, the 27-year-old claimed that her previous two albums were “cash-grabs,” tweeting: “I realized I hadn’t done anything personal and that I was cranking out digestible pop hits for children on Twitter to get into fights about.” Focusing more on rap verses than sugary pop hooks, “Attention” builds on the same theme, with lyrics like “You follow me, but you don’t really care about the music” to boot.
The accompanying music video is a change of pace for Doja too — whereas the videos for Planet Her’s singles played upon her knack for sexual playfulness, the video for “Attention” offers stark images like Doja covered head-to-toe in...

It’s one of the most emotionally powerful songs he’s ever done. He sings about facing up to personal transitions, with the chorus “In this world it’s just us/You know it’s not the same as it was.”
It’s a daring change-up for Styles, unlike anything he’s done before musically.

Lizzo just confirmed her goddess status in her brand-new music video for "Rumors". Just four days after posting a FaceTime call between her and Cardi B to announce their first-ever collaboration on Instagram, the duo dropped their masterpiece of a video on Friday, Aug. 13.

Staying on theme, Lizzo is decked out like an ancient Greek goddess, complete with a toga-inspired dress, embellished gold nail guards, and plenty of 24-karat jewels.
Halfway through the video, we get our first look at Cardi B, who sits on her throne wearing body jewelry and a custom gold breast plate designed by artist Misha Japanwala (the rapper worked with her longtime stylist Kollin Carter). The video ends with Lizzo...

Exclusive: WME has signed Tanu Muino, the Cuban Ukrainian director coming off of helming Lil Nas X’s music video for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” the second single from his forthcoming studio album that gave the rapper his second Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 after the monster hit “Old Town Road.”
With the signing, WME will build out Muino’s business across TV, film, documentary, fashion and branding.
The vibrant, VFX-heavy “Montero” video, which got a sneak peek with a Super Bowl ad this year, puts a queer spin on the story of original sin with its visual Bible and mythology references, spurring dialogue around the oppression faced by Lgtbq+ youth. The video generated about 3 million tweets within three days of its release.
Muino’s credits as a music video director include Cardi B’s hit “Up,” and she has also worked with the likes of Katy Perry and Rosalía.

Grammy-nominated Spanish superstar Rosalía dropped a surprise new single on Thursday, titled “Juro Que,” or “I Swear That.”
After she chopped and screwed flamenco traditions with the 2018 avant-pop masterpiece El Mal Querer — and made a brief foray into reggaeton in 2019, followed by a striking cameo in Travis Scott’s “Highest In the Room” — she bounds back to her classical training in “Juro Que.” Circled by acoustic guitars and fluttering palmas, Rosalía sings theatrically from the perspective of a woman whose boyfriend is to serve 400 days in prison.
