When Jason Parham found out that “Insecure” executive producer Prentice Penny was on board to adapt his “Wired” article about Black Twitter, he had a pinch-me moment. “Is this a joke?” Parham recalled thinking, laughing at a table along with Penny ahead of the “Black Twitter: A People’s History” premiere at SXSW in March.
“Being a writer is very solitary process,” Parham said, comparing it to a television writers room or production team. He was nervous at first — he serves as executive producer on he series — but describes working with Penny as “pure collaboration from the very beginning.”
“We just vibed,” said showrunner Joie Jacoby.
“I just finished ‘Insecure’ and I really wanted a break from doing scripted television,” Penny said. “I didn’t want the next thing I did to be compared to that … I wanted a fresh creative challenge.”

What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

The Walking Dead maker Skybound Entertainment is pushing into the unscripted game.
The firm has hired ex-Catalina Content exec Brent Jacoby to head up the new division, which will tap into pre-existing Skybound IP such as AMC smash The Walking Dead and Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible.
Jacoby will be focused on quickly expanding the global unscripted TV slate, although Skybound didn’t delve any deeper into his strategy. He joins at the same time as former MGM TV VP Chris Goble, who takes up the newly-created SVP of Television role. Both will report to TV President Glenn Geller.
Jacoby joins from Sky Studios-backed Catalina where he developed the likes of The Mighty Underdogs for Discovery+. Prior to that, he led the development team for ITV America’s Outpost Entertainment, working for the likes of Discovery, A&e, Food Network and Science Channel including History’s Knife or Death.

If you think about it, there’s no better place to premiere “Black Twitter: A People’s History” than at South by Southwest.
The three-part Hulu and Onyx docuseries based on Jason Parham’s similarly titled “Wired” story exists at the perfect intersection of entertainment, internet, and culture — just like SXSW itself.
“When I read the article, it was not only was only something that I love, that I participated in, but I saw the power of it,” director Prentice Penny told IndieWire during the conference. “It was sort of feeling like the way my mother talks about the Civil Rights Movement. That’s what I felt like was happening on Black Twitter.”
Along with being an active platform-formerly-known-as-Twitter user, Penny (whose profile welcomes users with the subhed “Fux Yo Blue Check”) was itching to do something different after “Insecure” — something that scared him.

I would compare Chappelle’s Home Team—Donnell Rawlings: A New Day with the usual lavish Bengali wedding food menu. The flatbread and a vegetarian side dish, in the beginning, are as good as they can be most of the time, but never really the show stoppers. Things only start to heat up with the entry of something like a fish fry. And then the magic happens—with all the mutton, chicken, and fish items around. The magic for which you basically attend weddings. No matter how amazing the dessert section in the end is, you still miss the meat and potatoes. I understand the analogy might seem crass to some of you, and my sincere apologies to the vegetarians (and the vegans), but this is the most fitting one. I could find to describe my feelings about the new Netflix special.

After surprising and captivating the audience on the Nashville stop of “The Revolutions Live Tour” with a performance of “Scars” with surprise guest, Chris Daughtry, rock legends Papa Roach have shared the brand new live version of their hit single. This track is out now and streaming here.
“Scars (feat Chris Daughtry) (Live)” is not only a fresh take on one of the band’s biggest hits, but it also serves as the latest release on the band’s latest EP “Leave A Light On (Talk Away The Dark)”. The iconic song’s message of the complexity of emotional pain, the challenges often inherent in communicating one’s feelings, and the necessary bravery in being vulnerable rings just as true today as it did when released in 2004.
The track saw its debut performed live preceded by an emotional PSA delivered by front man Jacoby Shaddix, who pledged a donation to...

Partway through Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover, the new Frontline documentary from filmmakers James Jacoby and Anya Bourg (Amazon Empire: The Rise and Reign of Jeff Bezos), former Twitter employee Yoel Roth states, “No one should have that kind of power. But that power exists.”
Roth’s statement comes in response to Jacoby questioning Twitter’s 2021 decision to suspend the account of then-President Donald Trump after several of Trump’s tweets were flagged for inciting violence during the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. According to the documentary, it also served as catalyst for Elon Musk’s decision to purchase the far-reaching social platform and remake it in his own image.

In many respects, even attempting to write this piece is foolhardy. Articles like this are usually the space to explore an ending that alters a franchise's trajectory, a climactic twist, or something ambiguous that makes you choose what you believed happened. These can all be explained through logic and rationality, and often times, the creators of these works themselves will do interviews about how they see their endings. Storytelling in a visual medium — especially with mainstream Hollywood storytelling — tends to be rather blunt in its desire to impart some sort of message or arrive at a conclusion that satisfies the dramatic and emotional elements of the story.

Yo ho, ho! But where is the rum? And come to think of it, where is Johnny Depp? Despite some serious calls for Johnny Depp to reprise the beloved – and often sloshed – Captain Jack Sparrow for another Pirates of the Caribbean movie, some are casting their doubts on that ever happening.
Vince Lozano, who played Jacoby in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl – and got an ax to the back courtesy of Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner – told MovieWeb that he supports the idea of bringing back Johnny Depp for one more big screen and high seas Pirates outing but isn’t so sure it will ever actually come to fruition. “I think he deserves another shot as Jack, but I don’t think it’s going to happen, I’m hearing a lot of stories out there. “I’m not exaggerating when I say that I grew up on Neil Diamond,” reveals Will Swenson. “He’s my Dad’s favorite singer of all time. So it was just fed to us with our breakfast, practically.” It’s appropriate then, that the Tony-nominated actor is bringing the iconic musician to life in the new bio-musical “A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical.” The actor was even able to enlist the help of Diamond himself in order to bring the true essence of the star to his physical and vocal transformation. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Part of Swenson’s job is adopting Diamond’s signature look and stage presence. He admits that there is an enormous change in him when he gears up in the flamboyant, sequined costumes and flowing hair. Upon completing duties as a debut screenwriter, Friedrich Dürrenmatt celebrated a job well done by promptly rewriting the whole thing. The Swiss playwright and novelist had bent to studio demands and relinquished control of his script, It Happened in Broad Daylight, to Hans Jacoby, a veteran Hollywood writer who knew what studios wanted and gave it to them. Dürrenmatt collaborated with Jacoby and turned in a by-the-numbers detective story where clues lead to the perp and justice was served. But he didn’t believe in it. He had come from the traditions of Brecht’s epic theater and German philosophy, neither of which promise happy endings. So he rewrote his screenplay into a short novel, The Pledge, the new opening of which introduces a crime writer who’s instantly berated for his predictable, unrealistic garbage. Now the characters reenact It Happened in Broad Daylight‘s story only to discover even...

The Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates again on Wednesday, continuing its year-long push to curb inflation. But that balance is more elusive than ever given the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank and subsequent meltdowns tied to the new rate environment.
James Jacoby, a correspondent with Frontline, spent years reporting on the Fed’s mysterious ways for an installment of the PBS series, Age of Easy Money. The documentary, which premiered last week and is available to stream for free on the Frontline YouTube channel, details the long series of decisions from the 2000s to today that kept interest rates artificially low. The challenge now: Trying to get companies of all stripes to forego one of the foundational elements that helped them grow.
“Silicon Valley is going through a correction right now, in large part because easy money is over,” Jacoby told Deadline in an interview.

They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. That certainly seems to be the case with Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix’s 18-year-old son Jagger, who joined the band onstage for a performance of the song “Dead Cell.”
The appearance took place during the band’s February 22nd show at Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The concert was part of Papa Roach’s “Rockzilla” tour, which also features co-headliners Falling in Reverse, as well as Hollywood Undead and Escape the Fate.
The band took to Instagram to post footage of Jagger’s appearance, billing it as the result of Jacoby losing a bet with his son. The clip shows Jagger delivering a high-energy rendition of “Dead Cell” alongside his dad.
Papa Roach are touring behind their 11th studio album, Ego Trip, which arrived in April of 2022. Pick up tickets to their upcoming shows here.

Various sets of cameras, far different from the national-news ones obsessed only with Black homicide rates, have been rolling in Chicago over the last few years. Prominent efforts include “16 Shots” (2019), about the police murder of Laquan McDonald, and the NatGeo documentary miniseries “City So Real” (2020), which exposed the widespread opposition to Mayor Rahm Emanuel that contrasted with his esteemed national image. These, however, are far from the only attempts to put a present-day spotlight on the race and class issues still at play in the inner workings of one of the nation’s most iconic and notorious cities.
Just as “Unapologetic” (2020) put a lens on the rarely covered Movement for Black Lives in Chicago, protesting institutional complicity in racialized state violence with a focus on two female queer activists at the forefront, Chicago native Kevin Shaw’s “Let the Little Light Shine” amplifies another footnoted protest in the city.
