September. Labor Day, come and gone. Fall… theoretically. Back to school, back to theaters. That’s right: despite Hollywood’s ongoing labor shutdown, new product continues to leech out from the national Don’t-Miss Indies reserves, spilling its way onto screens in art houses cinemas worldwide. And yeah, a piping hot pumpkin-spice latte probably sounds like the last thing you want to consume after a long, hot day on the picket line. But you gotta admit: it’s nice to have the option.

Releases keep coming but talent is not comfortable promoting films, even indies, even if productions have waivers or don’t need them. Where that’s leading isn’t clear. “Who’s going to take the plunge first? We’ll see. The festivals will be the big test,” said one independent distribution exec.
From a moderate release like Jules, in nearly 800 theaters, to Sundance-premiering The Pod Generation, starring Emilia Clarke and Chiwetel Ejiofor on 100 screens, to French film Between Two Worlds with Juliette Binoche, opening on two screens this weekend, stars were not comfortable stepping out amid strikes. The WGA and AMPTP resume bargaining today for the first time in over three months. SAG-AFTRA remains in a standoff with studios over deteriorating pay and working conditions for its members.

Director Daphné Baiwir examines not the literary work of prolific author Stephen King but the vast body of ongoing adaptations of King’s work, beginning with 1976’s Carrie, in the documentary King on Screen. With over 80 films and TV series and counting, adapting his work by over 50 directors, the horror author remains one of the most adapted in the world. King on Screen assembles talking heads to examine what it is about his literary work that translates to the screen so well and why his audience remains captive decades later. However, the documentary’s feature format struggles to encapsulate its subject’s overwhelming scope.
Baiwir begins her examination with an extended opening sequence that sees her traversing a fictional realm packed with King references. She drives through a forest, emulating the opening of The Shining, until she arrives at a shop named after the short story “In the Tall Grass.

While at the 2022 Fantastic Fest last month, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with documentarian Daphné Baiwir about her newest project, King on Screen, which explores the lasting impact of Stephen King’s literary work on the world of cinema. During our discussion, Baiwir chatted about how she approached such an enormous topic, like all of the Stephen King adaptations that we’ve been enjoying for nearly 50 years now, how the project evolved based on her interviews, creating her King-centric opening and closing scenes in King on Screen, and more.
I'm somebody who absolutely loves Stephen King adaptations so this was right up my alley. I'm curious, for you, what was the impetus behind you wanting to set out to do this documentary and explore what King's works mean to the world of cinema?
Daphné Baiwir: So actually, I really wanted to make a documentary about Stephen King, but...

The art of adapting books for the screen is a challenging one and we have seen time and time again that it’s impossible to make everybody happy, but some authors seem particularly well suited to having their work turned into films. Perhaps the most successful of all is Stephen King, who has had over 80 feature films and several TV series based on his books. The constitutes something of a phenomenon, and as such it’s curious how little it has been addressed. With her new documentary King On Screen, part of the 2022 Fantastic Fest line-up, Daphné Baiwir aims to set that right. This is a film which is likely to have considerable fan appeal, as well as providing an introduction to both films and books for the curious.

The art of adapting books for the screen is a challenging one and we have seen time and time again that it’s impossible to make everybody happy, but some authors seem particularly well suited to having their work turned into films. There have been more than 80 films made based on Stephen King books, plus numerous small screen adaptations. They’re so varied in content and tone that you might not realise how many you’ve seen, and their appeal extends far beyond horror fans. Indeed, director Daphné Baiwir contends here, it’s really quite misleading to call King a horror author. His interests range far wider than that. What he does really well is to write characters, which is a lot of what makes these adaptations appealing.
Many people, she observes, find their way to King’s books through the films rather than the other way round. They can be roughly divided into two groups: the horror fans excited by the likes of Carrie, It and The Mist, and the others drawn to the likes of Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption. in between, perhaps, there is Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining,...

Brian de Palma got the ball rolling with his big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Carrie… and since then, over fifty filmmakers have taken the helm of more than eighty King film and TV adaptations. The many adaptations of King’s work are the focus of the upcoming documentary King on Screen, directed by Daphné Baiwir (The Rebellious Olivia De Havilland). King-approved, King on Screen will premiere at Fantastic Fest next month, and Deadline reports that Yellow Veil Pictures has picked up the world sales rights.

Few other authors have had as many of their works adapted to film and televison like Stephen King has. With so many adaptations out there documenting it all must have been a monumental feat in itself. Belgian actress and filmmaker Daphné Baiwir’s feature documentary King on Screen took a stab at it and the audience at Fantastic Fest will be the first to let us know if they succeeded. The folks at Yellow Veil Pictures are confident that Baiwir has done right by King with the documentary. Yes, it was approved by King themselves, but if Yellow Veil Pictures think it's good enough to pick the world sales rights for it? Well. That's good enough for us! The announcement follows. Inception (12A)
(Christopher Nolan, 2010, Us) Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard. 148 mins
Nolan pushes the mega-budget cerebral action thriller to its limits here, and possibly beyond, with a multilayered onslaught that could leave you exhilarated, exhausted, or possibly in need of a new brain. The fiendishly complex plot imagines a world where corporate spies can raid your dreams to steal, or plant, ideas. Thus, DiCaprio assembles his team and orchestrates a risky psychic heist involving dreams within dreams within dreams; something like Ocean's Eleven meets Synecdoche, New York, multiplied by James Bond. Even if it follows the logic of the Hollywood blockbuster more than an actual dream, this boldly goes where no blockbuster has gone before. And there's nothing your brain can do to stop it.
Bluebeard (15)
(Catherine Breillat, 2009, Fra) Lola Créton, Daphné Baiwir, Dominique Thomas. 80 mins

Catherine Breillat’s films bring with them an unshakeable sense of dread, a ticking timebomb sensation that erupts in quiet devastation—hold the wide-scale destruction. The French button-pusher, operating with over 30 years of filmmaking experience, seems to relish in punishing a viewer’s comfort level. The most scathing example is her 2001 shocker Fat Girl, a meditative study of an insecure teenager’s grappling with sensuality that takes a hard, visceral left-turn in its final section. Breillat’s latest picture, Bluebeard (Barbe Bleue), doesn’t hit with as strong a late-game blow as Fat Girl, but it certainly earns intelligent discussion once the credits roll. Breillat, who also wrote the script, turns her lifelong fascination with Charles Perrault’s same-named fairy tale into a nightmare fable remix. While not as universally known as other entries into the 17th century author’s oeuvre, including “Cinderella” and “Sleeping Beauty,” “Bluebeard” is coated in malice,...

With its embrace of genre and slick production values, "Chloe" represents director Atom Egoyan ("The Sweet Hereafter") and screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson's ("Secretary" and "Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus") most mainstream efforts to date. Cue the "not there's anything wrong with that." In fact, in many ways this chilly romantic thriller does provide a welcome break from Wilson's standard envelope-pushing head-scratchers. The problem is that her queasy sexual politics remain front and center.
"Chloe" is based upon the 2003 French film "Nathalie...," and its premise is pretty much the stuff of which French films are made. When music professor David Stewart (Liam Neeson) misses the surprise birthday thrown by his wife, gynecologist Catherine (Julianne Moore), she hires Chloe (Amanda Seyfried), a hotel prostitute, to test his fidelity. Naturally, she finds out more than she really wants to know, and develops a mutual obsession with Chloe that escalates into...

Bluebeard (Barbe Bleue)
Directed by: Catherine Breillat
Cast: Lola Créton, Daphné Baiwir, Dominique Thomas
Running Time: 1 hr 20 min
Rating: unrated
Complete Coverage – 33rd Portland International Film Festival
Plot: Two little girls read the horrifying fairytale “Bluebeard” while hidden away in an attic, framing the story that’s being lived by two sisters in 18th century France.
Who’S It For? Do you like seeing fairytales re-imagined, like the films In the Company of Wolves and Freeway? Then this should be right up your alley.
Overall
Breillat’s 1999 film Romance traumatized me in a good way; I loved it, but it was a horrible spectacle to sit through. If I had this as a DVD from Netflix it would have taken me forever to watch it, but as I had to write a review I didn’t have the same luxury of procrastination. Turns out I didn’t need...

Also having it's world premier is Mitchell Lichtenstein's (Teeth) newest film Happy Tears which sounds nothing it's predecessor (a genre piece) as it's a family drama.
